TOURISM IS growing at record speed and fas-

ter than other economic sectors in Finland. The Helsinki-Vantaa Airport's position as a traffic hub between Europe and Asia is one of the reasons of this growth. Kuopio has excellent flight and other travel connections and you can experience the wonderful Finnish winter nature in just a few days with the reliable local partners. FINLAND'S TOURISM has also generated con-

siderable interest internationally. Both the British Financial Times and the Lonely Planet, which publishes travel guides, listed Finland as one of the 2017’s most exciting travel destinations. The smoke sauna at the Rauhalahti Spa Hotel, Kuopio’s market square and unique cuisine are some of the things in Kuopio that have received international recognition.

Welcome

to a genuine winter city THE KUOPIO region is an excellent choice to travel

to in the winter since you can enjoy an inspirational and wide range of events and experiences that will surely become fond memories! The Finnish nature is marvellous in winter. In Kuopio, you can explore nature in so many different ways that everyone can find something enjoyable. LAKE KALLAVESI, which surrounds Kuopio,

freezes over during the winter and snow covers the lake like a bright white blanket. The frozen lake turns into an activity centre where you can, for example, ski, skate, walk with snowshoes or go ice fishing. And, if you’re brave enough, you can even swim in the icy lake. YOU CAN enjoy the snowy winter scenery alone

if you want to focus on your own thoughts and be at peace. But there are also many activities suitable for groups for those who want to do something together with others. These include the international Finland Ice Marathon, the atmospheric moonlit skating and recreational skating paths.

A BREATH of fresh winter air is good for one’s appetite. The local restaurants are at your service during the winter, offering traditional Finnish and Savo dishes along with seasonal dishes and delicacies from around the world. THE SOUL needs to be fed and taken care of also, not just the body. There is a wide range of cultural attractions in Kuopio for lovers of culture. The museums present local art and history in a lively and interesting way. The Orthodox Church Museum Riisa is a unique window through which you can explore the history, artefacts and eastern religion of the Orthodox Church. The VB Photographic Centre offers you different perspectives of the past and current life in Kuopio and Finland. WE WELCOME you to spend the winter in

Kuopio. Here inspiration is a force of nature.

There is much to see and do in Kuopio during the winter. Be sure to explore at least these unique spots.

1

Kuopio's market hall and marketplace

The elegant Art Nouveau market hall is a traditional trading center and attraction. In addition to shopping, the hall is used to meet people and enjoy the laid back Savo atmosphere. At the moment there are 21 shops operating in the market hall. In addition to groceries such as meat, fish, bread, spices, cheeses and cold cuts, purchases of handicraft accessories, souvenirs, flowers and books can be made. In the Hall Café you can ease your coffee cravings. The glass pavilion located at the side of the all, and the Apaja shopping center located under the market square, complete the services on offer at the market hall. Located right at the core of the city center with it's pedestrian streets, the market square is a bustling center of activity. Also known as 'Mualiman napa', the market square sells traditional delicacies such as Finnish fish pasties (kalakukko) and pan fried vendace and meat pasties. Other features of the pedestrian center are the Siskotyttö and Veljmies statues in addition to the seven new sculptures by artist Pekka Kauhanen. Kauppakatu 45 www.koupionkauppahalli.fi

2

Puijo Tower

The modern Puijo Tower is the third viewing Tower to be built on the Puijo sight. Puijo Tower is a major attraction for visitors and represents the heart of Kuopio's landscape. The tower is a beacon of the region, warmly welcoming home travelers from their journeys. A visit to the 75 meter high tower is a memorable experience. The tower's location on the hill creates the amazing view from the top, which brings together Lakeland-Finland's wooded landscape and the buildings of Kuopio. City and nature meet in a way that makes the experience unique. A visit to the tower is a good way to make an impression both on Finnish and foreign visitors alike. A return to visit the tower is surprisingly good for locals too. The scenery changes slowly with time but changing seasons, weather, and the time of day affect the view enormously. If Kuopio looks to be completely surrounded by nothing but nature in the light of day, the darkness of the evening reveals the lights shining all the way to the horizon, and tells how people live so far and wide.

The Saint Nicholas Cathedral

Kuopio's Saint Nicholas Cathedral is the main church, or cathedral of the Kuopio Orthodox congregation and of the Karjala diocese. The cathedral was designed by master builder A. Isakson and was dedicated for use in 1904. The church was built using local builders, but General Governor Nikolai Bobrikov helped immensely with funding and planning. As a result of the second world war, the central administration of the Orthodox church had to leave Sortavala and in 1955 a church assembly decided that the new location would be in Kuopio. So the church in Kuopio became the denomination's central cathedral and the archbishop's own church. The church has undergone three large changes and renovations, the latest being in 2003–2004, when it was returned as closely as possible to it's original appearance. The church hall contains paintings by renowned icon painter Petros Sasaki and a mosaic by Moscow artist Juri Jarin.

Saaristokatu

Saaristokatu (Archipelago Street) connects the city center to the suburb of Saaristokaupunki. This 4,5 km long scenic route begins from Tasavallankatu in Siikaniemi and runs until Keilankanta, caressing the islands on the way. The street was finished in 2008 and it travels upon the waters of Lake Kallavesi for 1,5 km. The bridges named after famous people originating from Kuopio make up half a kilometer of the street. The Ellen Thesleff bridge reaches 280 meters, the Fridolf Weurlander bridge is 30 meters long, the Anton Lindfors bridge covers 22 meters of street and the Unto Koistinen bridge runs for a lengthy 160 meters. Saaristokaupunki consists of four new neighborhoods rising up on the headlands between the old city center and the so called park area of Petonen. In 2010 Finland’s housing fair was held in Saaristokaupunki, in the neighborhood of Lehtoniemi.

Mystery Rooms

Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot wannabes will now be able to enjoy real-life detective games like escape rooms in Kuopio. You go into a closed room, and the door will be locked. To get out, you must solve the riddle using objects and clues found in the room along side tips from the game’s mysterious leaders and your friends’ IQ and attention to detail. The time limit is 60 minutes. It is a real-life escape game, played in groups of 2–6 people. It’s a physical version of the mystery games made for computers and devices. In an enclosed space and by exploring your environment, players need solve the problems and escape from the room using logical reasoning, creativity and teamwork. ce fishing as a hobby is fun, exciting and affordable. Equipment is cheap and you need no fishing licence. It’s important to remember dress warm, as ice fishing mainly means sitting still in freezing weather. Experienced ice fishers know the best fishing spots. A beginner may find these spots due to clusters of fishing holes, and thus benefit from good fishing spots. Without such clusters, you can start where the fish hang around during summer, which is next to reeds and headlands. There are different methods of ice fishing. The methods differ from each

other based on the jig i.e. lure in use. If the fish take bait easily, a vertical jig is the best to use. A type of weighted jig called mormuska works better when the fish take bait poorly.

The most active plungers can amass around 300 dips in a year. Members of the Winter Swimmers get a key to the sauna. A paid up member can go swimming as much as they like. There are many rumors surrounding the benefits of swimming in the ice hole but only a small amount of scientific research has been carried out. Cold tolerance has been shown to improve after only a few dips while different aches and joint pain have been found to be relieved due to regular dips. An experienced swimmer tells how swimming helps with back pain. The cold therapy can also be a help to those suffering from rheumatism, asthma and MS, especially on a regular basis. Other health bene-

fits include increased blood circulation and improved metabolism. Because of this it is also believed that skin stays firmer. Some also swear that it is a protection against the flu. In addition to the physical benefits, winter swimmers say that they feel relief from stress, the mind is said to clear, just like when meditating. The revitalizing effects of swimming last the whole day, and when evening comes sleep feels better than ever. Before taking up winter swimming it is good to talk to your doctor if you suffer from heart problems or high blood pressure. Ice swimming is a suitable hobby for all ages. Families visit the sauna and the youngest swimmers are only six or seven years old. Older enthusiasts have already past 80 years of age, so a brave winter dip is a suitable activity for the whole family. Winter swimming doesn’t require specialized equipment. Compared to summer swimming the only difference is the use of shoes or socks on the way to the water, and some put a hat on too. – The water is 4°C, so this is kind of like shock treatment for the body! www.digimag.fi

FOOTPATHS

Kuopio is just the right size to be explored on foot. The city holds tranquil culture paths, unobstructed walking experiences and scenic routes for joggers.

TEXT DIGIMAG PHOTOS DIGIMAG ARCHIEVES, KUOPIO PHOTO BANK/SOILE NEVALAINEN

CULTURE TRAIL THE CULTURE TRAIL (3-8 km) takes

place in the city center where you’ll run into authentic city culture with its pubs and art experiences as well as nature in the middle of the city. During winter, the snow covering the parks entices to make snow angels, and often the park is littered with snow men, each classier than the next. NATURALLY OUR JOURNEY begins by

the Market Hall and continues on the pedestrian zone of Kauppakatu beside the restaurant quarter towards Kuopio Art Museum (Kauppakatu 35). On the other side of the road rises the recently renovated Kuopio Cathedral (Vuorikatu 17), and by following its stony walls we reach Snellman park and Kuopio Museum opposite of the park (Kauppakatu 23). As we proceed down on Kauppakatu towards the harbor, we discover the legendary restaurant Sampo with its ven-

THE CITY CENTER AND ITS ALLEYS daces and other Savonian delicacies. Restaurant Sataman Helmi is situated on the ground floor of the oldest stone building in Kuopio. After crossing the park you’ll get a glimpse of the glistering Lake Kallavesi, the ships and the harbor warehouse restaurants and the Ice Marathon course in the winter when the lake is frozen. Walking on the waterfront (and on Varastokatu) towards Väinölänniemi you’ll spot the windmill on Vasikkasaari island and hear the shrieking of the seagulls. You’ll marvel at the wonderful lake view and pause to gaze at the beach or the beautiful gazebos situated on the cape. The Rönö bridge leads us onto Honkasaarentie and all the way to Varvisaari island and its observation point. Upon returning to the city center it’s recommended to drop by St. Nicholas Cathedral (Sepänkatu 7), Old Kuopio Museum (Kirkkokatu 22) and VB Photographic Centre (Kuninkaankatu 14-16).

KUOPIO IS ALSO a city for children and senior citizens. The

unobstructed routes and the center’s smaller alleys are safe. The surroundings of Valkeisenlampi pond in the city center offer an unobstructed trail with many park benches to rest on. STARTING FROM TULLIPORTINKATU by the market square

we’ll head towards Kuopio City Theatre (Niiralankatu 2), passing by Sankaripuisto cemetery and Kasarmipuisto park. Behind the culture building there are the traffic park, which is rather quiet during winter, and the livelier playgrounds as well as the beach of pond Valkeisenlampi. On the opposite shore you can delight in the rugged beauty of the church of Alava. (Keihäskatu 5). You’ll be able to explore the Kevät sculpture while strolling back towards the city center on the paths next to Alavantie. By the pond you might bump into Mr. Pushkin (the statue) and it’s easy to steer towards Torikatu and Hanna Partanen’s Finnish fish pasty bakery (Kasarmikatu 15). If you’re around before Christmas, it’s easy to drop by from here to the Pikku Pietari market alley (Hatsalankatu 24) to shop gifts and handicrafts.

SAARISTOKATU AND SAARISTOKAUPUNKI IF YOU’RE UNDAUNTED by a long trip, or you’re on the move by car or by bicycle, you should travel to the pride of Kuopio, Saaristokatu and Saaristokaupunki. For the passionate exerciser, the 15km route is a study in contradictions through industrial areas and the outdoors. The magnificent Saaristokatu is an experience worth seeing: nothing beats a picnic in the Pölhönsaari island shelter by live fire. And no view is as surprising as the 13-story apartment houses on the top of the already high banks of Keilankanta channel. THE MOST BRISK route goes directly from the market square past the

Kummisetä terrace and the Music centre towards Haapaniemi. After touring around the shores of Haapaniemi and having admired the chimney of the Saastamoinen roller mill, the energetic traveller can recharge at the power plant and move towards Bellanranta beach and Saaristokatu. By the bridges you can find the cooking shelter of Pölhönsaari as well as the campfire spots of the Pikkusaaret islands. After reaching Käränkä island, the road goes on under the eyes of the Bridge guards to the other side of Keilankanta channel all the way to the of home fair area of Lehtoniemi. From there you make an U-turn back towards the center and cross the bridges via Tasavallankatu to the shrine of KuPS football team at the stadium, and through Myhkyrinkatu back to the market square. Well done! Source: www.kuopio.fi

uring the past year, the large boat storage facilities in the Siikaranta area have become an experience and activity centre. The whole family can find activities and things to do all at the same place. The men behind the year-old centre’s idea are the owner of Bella Boats Oy Raimo Sonninen and Kuopio’s Business Advisor Unto Juutinen. DUE TO the manufacturing of

boats being transferred to the Ostrobothnian factory, there

was a need to find a new purpose for these boat storage facilities in Kuopio. For Sonninen, sports and wellness are important, so he approached a few companies which provide sports activities. After four companies and the Kuopio City committed to the project, it was possible to start working on the area’s strategy. The area got its name from the Bella Boats Oy company. “The area is growing and developing all the time. New activities are constantly being developed and we will present them to the public when the time is right,” says Sonninen.

NORTH SAVO'S FOOD is admired world wide TEXT DIGIMAG/TEEMU VIEMERÖ PHOTOS DIGIMAG ARCHIVE, KESKO

The people living in North Savo appreciate their own local delicacies. The purity and freshness of North Savo cuisine has also attracted global interest, and the province was awarded in Brussels this autumn.

tourist travelling to North Savo is able to enjoy our everyday food with us. Since 2006, Aki Hiltunen, entrepreneur and chef of VS Ravintolat Oy, has seen the great interest in and demand for the province’s delicious food by foreigners. The significance of Northern Savo's cuisine is also highlighted by the European Gastronomic Region 2020 award given in Brussels in October. The award ceremony was an interesting and eye-opening experience for Hiltunen, who served as a chef there. “We made a tasting menu with local ingredients from North Savo that we brought with us. We created a cocktail buffet where we offered fried vendace, pike, wild duck from Lapinlah-

ti and beef with potatoes from Kuopio. The vegetables we offer came from Kiuruvesi and we cooked, for example, falafel made of peas and funnel chanterelle mushrooms. We also served cheese from Suonenjoki with beetroot as well as local pastries," comments Hiltunen. “The purity of Finnish nature and the natural taste of food are highly valued around the world. People were eagerly awaiting the food and we exceeded their high expectations. They were very interested in what our food was and how it was made,” Hiltunen continues. EACH COUNTRY has its own tastes.

The cuisine from North Savo stands out with its quality and purity in addition to its simplicity ‒ Finnish food is lightly seasoned in order to allow the

fresh, natural flavours to take the spotlight. Hiltunen mentions that a smoked flavour is one of the most important Savo flavours. “The essence of North Savo’s food comes from fresh, natural and locally-produced ingredients as well as enhancing the flavours. Nature has a great significance in the flavours. Some of the best flavours of the summer are berries and new potatoes due to the abundant sunlight that gives its own unique flavour to everything that grows. When discussing the simplicity of Savo food, the aim is to bring out the flavour of even a simple ingredient like a chicken egg to its fullest even in fine dining restaurants. Chefs from Savo let the flavours of the ingredients speak for themselves,” says Hiltunen. “The accessibility of ingredients is

mushrooms, Hiltunen recommends other summer treats to tourists. Lean fish from our lakes, such as pike, is highly valued around the world. A well-known dish for Savo residents, “kalakukko” (fish wrapped in rye pastry and baked), has been an exotic experience for tourists visiting Kuopio. Even the media has taken notice of Savo’s kalakukko. For example, the media giant BBC published an article on their BBC Travel webpage in November. For the tourists who are drawn to taste experiences, Hiltunen also recommends the fresh ingredients from the local shops. You can find a wide variety among the meat and fish sections as well as the fresh vegetable and fruit sections. “New potatoes, Finnish berries and mushrooms, such as chanterelles, are summer delicacies. I always recommend anyone visiting Savo to buy extra. The delicious meat and fish can be enjoyed throughout the year. Burbot is definitely a fish worth tasting – and don’t forget the great dairy products such as butter,” Hiltunen recommends.

THE JANUARY MARKET ENLIVENS WINTER DAYS ONE OF KUOPIO’S annual traditions is the January market, a market organised

yet again in January 2018. The January market is part of Kuopio’s strong market place tradition since 1782. It has been organised at its current location at the market square annually since 1856. Each year, the “market item of the year” will be chosen, and it must be Finnish, eco-friendly and a high-quality handmade product. There will also be the traditional competition to find the best “kalakukko” (a Finnish delicacy of fish wrapped in rye dough and baked). Vendors from all over Finland travel to Kuopio for the January market and the event itself is interesting to even random travellers. www.kuopiontori.fi

Kallavesi

FINLAND ICE MARATHON THE TRADITIONAL ICE skating event, Finland Ice Marathon, will be held for the 35th time. It draws international skaters to Lake Kallavesi every year. Competitors come especially from Holland, where skating is a really popular sport. The event encourages athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and even children to be active. The most popular racing distance is 50 kilometres, which can also be skated with basic skates instead of racing skates as well as with skiing poles. The long and demanding 200 km route has athletes participating from Finland and abroad. The event has evolved many times during its history. For example, the latest was in 2015 when a Dutch group cycled the “king route.” After that, the programme has included cycling with traction tyres for the third consecutive year. By constantly evolving, even more international guests are drawn to the competition. Skating tracks are available to everyone also after the event depending on the weather, usually until March. There are tracks along the coastline ranging from a few kilometres to more than ten kilometres.

Experiences and the peaceful nature

attract people to Kuopio TEXT DIGIMAG/HETA JYRÄLÄ PHOTO DIGIMAG/ANNI LAITINEN

The nature in Kuopio and Tahko make them the perfect places for relaxing and enjoying new experiences. A versatile range of services ensures that people of all ages, including families, find something to do and enjoy.

K

uopio is the capital of Finland’s Lakeland district and is located on the shore of beautiful Kallavesi. The area is fascinating with its spectacular scenery, varied activities and vibrant life. The Lakeland district is one of Finland's three largest tourist centres in addition to Lapland and the metropolitan area. The thousands of lakes, and everything that you can possibly experience and do, makes the area unique. Finns are honest, hard-working, innovative and close to nature. The area provides you the opportunity to experience clean and beautiful nature, which offers great chances for nature-related experiences, fishing, hiking, biking, events, cultural experiences, sports and wellness. The Kuopio region is also a strong centre of art, culture and design

as well as being home to several influential Finnish brands and designers. THE VIBRANT Kuopio area is easy to reach and explore for visitors. The location of the area is excellent as it is halfway to everywhere. For example, Kuopio is halfway to Lapland when coming from southern Finland. This ensures that visitors can spend their valuable holiday time enjoying and relaxing instead of travelling. Also, Finland’s location between the East and the West makes it accessibly from anywhere in the world. “I always tell my friends here, Finland is not far from China with Finnair. The Finns do not always smile, but their hearts are always warm. Finland is a very attractive destination because it has the best natural beauty, rich culture, perfect infrastructure and kind peo-

ple,” says Professor Zhang Guangrui of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Zhang Guangrui has been studying tourism for 30 years. Last October, the professor arrived from China to Finland to lecture at the Lakeland Seminar. At the lecture, he told about Chinese foreign travel and ideas about Finland as a destination for Chinese tourists. THE 50-YEAR-OLD Tahko holiday resort area is a popular tourist destination that offers countless opportunities throughout the year. During the winter at Tahko, you can ride snowmobiles, skate, cross country ski, downhill ski or simply enjoy the winter wonderland in many other ways. In addition to the fast-paced

activities, Tahko provides wellness and spa services to help visitors relax. “I really love the Ruska scenery. I can hardly find any promotion about this attractive unique seasonal scenery in China. Winter sports have become very popular now in China,” he continues. “In China we don’t have many good skiing resorts in the country. They are either too crowded or too cold, or only suitable for professional sportsmen,” says Professor Guanruai. “With plenty of winter sports opportunities, Tahko is a perfect winter destination especially for young people and for families,” he continues. Aholansaari breathes history AHOLANSAARI IS LOCATED a few minutes

away from Tahko and is, in addition to its value in cultural history, a camping and holiday centre. AHOLANSAARI IS ESPECIALLY known as the home island of Ukko-Paavo Ruotsalainen, who lived in the 19th century. A Pietist and a lay preacher, Ruotsalainen lived on the island on two occasions, first as a crofter in 1817– 20 and later as a land owner from 1830 until his death in 1852. Aholansaari was a centre for pastoral care in its time. If the doctors in towns close by couldn't help their patients themselves, the patients were sent to Ruotsalainen, who had an excellent psychological insight. Today Paavon pirtti (Paavo's dwelling) is a museum, and the island holds various spiritual events.

The long-awaited themed products with Tahko’s logo are the store’s specialty. Before entering the spa, you can purchase products for the spa such as bathing suits, bathrobes and water toys. To keep yourself warm outdoors during your leisure activities, the store offers socks, winter jackets and various headgear. If you want to buy something for yourself or bring presents back home, the store has decorative products and gift items. Souvenirs, refreshments and small snacks are also available. The SpaShop's product range is supplied by Looks Finland Oy.

OPENED IN November, the El Pico restaurant is worth a visit. The restaurant is made up of two parts, both with an atmosphere just like an Italian trattoria. Tahko's first wine bar serves as a relaxed meeting point where you can enjoy good wines. On the dining side of the restaurant, your taste buds are pampered with Mediterranean flavors. The restaurant serves delicious Italian pastas, genuine parma ham and various cheeses. You can find dining alternative from lighter snacking to juicy steaks. The wine bar also offers tastings for groups.

THE BAKERY and catering company Liepuska offers local and fresh bakery products within North Savo. Now you can also enjoy these fresh-baked savoury and sweet pastries in Tahko. At the beginning of December, the company opened a pop-up store in Tahko Spa’s lobby. The store is run separately from the Spa’s café and is operated by the bakery's own employee. The baked products are made by hand and are from the best ingredients. The selection varies from sweet treats like traditional cinnamon buns to more specialised treats like coconut pastries. If you prefer something savoury, there is a wide selection ranging from small pizzas to numerous breads.

Tahko has started to rent electrically-powered mountain bikes and offer guided tours.

T

he new activity provides a pleasant way to experience the natural environment regardless of one’s physical fitness because wide tires and an electric motor make cycling easier. Due to the bikes having wheels suitable for the normal ground as well as snowy weather, they are safe to ride in any season. The electric bikes also makes it easy to control your heart rate and do recovery exercises as well as basic endurance training even along

demanding terrain. Even though the bikes are electric, they still need to be cycled. The engine assists in climbing hills but the rider can adjust the assistance level as desired. If the rider wishes, the bike can also be fully manual without any electrical assistance. Because of unstable winters, Tahko has had to rethink the services offered and the electric bikes are the first year-round activity in the region. ”In recent years, cycling, and especially winter and mountain bik-

ing, have increased in popularity. This was also taken into account in the Tahko Action Plan. We wanted to be at the forefront of the development by offering a low-threshold mountain biking experience for everyone,” Tahko Safari’s entrepreneur Arto Jauhiainen describes the criteria for the acquisition. They sought expertise on the purchase of electric-assisted bicycles from Iikan Pyörävarikko. Based on that company’s recommendation, Tahko Safari chose ten HEAD

E-RANDALL bikes as their first purchase. ”When the physical load is easier, the rider can easily cycle longer distances than with a regular bike,” says Iikka Ahonen, Iikan Pyörävarikko’s entrepreneur. YOU CAN ride around the Tahko

area with bikes, but it is also possible to transport equipment. This means that tours and bike rentals can be offered within Tahko’s surrounding municipalities and regions. People can also buy bikes for their

own personal use from Iikan Pyörävarikko. There are many different models available from various brands and you can even test drive them. A new store will open in Joensuu in January 2018. 2018. During the event, start-ups and other companies pitch their ideas to investors during a ski lift ride. At Tahko Ski Lift Pitch, two competitors and an investor go for a 15-minute ride in a ski lift up the slope. During the journey, the competitors must sell their idea to the investor who then decides which of the competitors will proceed to the next round. A competitor who qualifies for the final round will have the chance to pitch their idea later in the evening at the restaurant Piazza. In the competition’s final round, the idea is pitched to the audience and to the jury, which decides the winner. The event is organized by the Kuopio Chamber of Commerce and it is designed together with the Finnish Business Angels Network. As a prize, the winner is awarded with expert advice on how to move forward with the idea.
