called Iivon lenkki (the track of Iivo), where the skier Iivo Niskanen trained for his Olympic gold medal. This 2,5 kilometre track is the same that put the finishing touches for Iivo’s physical condition for the Pyeongchang Olympics. Iivon lenkki has been marked to the Puijo area with signposts which narrate the achievements of Niskanen from his childhood to the personal Olympic gold medal. The Olympics are the goal for the Chinese young athletes practicing in Puijo, who have just started their ski jumping career.

A relaxed winter day includes conquering the sled hills and enjoying activities inside if it gets freezing. Kuopio offers a lot of sights to see and experiences for the whole family.

FOOTPATHS

A wonderful way to spend one's holiday on a bright frosty winter day is to have a walk in the city centre. For example the path around Valkeisenlampi is suitable by length and its easiness to small children. Along the path one can enjoy beautiful parks, stop to learn traffic rules at Niirala traffic park and stay and play in the playground.

PLAYDATE IN THE MARKETPLACE

The Kuopio marketplace offers activities for children during the winter from Monday to Saturday between seven a.m. and three p.m. The Marketplace has, among other things, a new playground, where one can feel free to play. In course of winter the marketplace will house the traditional winter season market fair, where you can certainly find something to do and entertainment for the whole family is guaranteed.

TAKE A SWIM

The public swimming pools and spas in Rauhalahti and Kunnonpaikka delight the little splashers. All of the above offer shallow children’s play pools and a variety of water toys for the little ones. In Rauhalahti one can find a fun waterslide for children unable to swim. The minislide in the children’s play pool in Kunnonpaikka on the other hand delights the little paddlers.

PLAY CASUALLY

Dive into the world of retro games in the Game Over Arcade or be charmed by the possibilities of virtual reality in Virtuaalimaailma Warppi. In the world of these games both children and adults get their fill of entertainment. Many restaurants also offer different gaming and play areas for children.

On a gorgeous winter day it pays to take advantage of the hilly Kuopio’s many sled hills or the Kasurila ski resort’s slalom opportunity in Siilinjärvi. Get your sleds and gliders and run to the hills!

Playing, jumping and the joy of exercise for all ages can be found in the Bellaranta Activity Centre. Take all your siblings and try the trampoline arena in Huippu Centre, the adventure park HopLop or the adventures in the indoors activity park SuperCorner ABC Pitkälahti.

FALL FOR THE MUSEUMS

The number one place for fans of automobiles is the Kuopio Automobile Museum, where you can find a variety of cars, motorcycles and equipment. The exhibition changes constantly, so there is plenty to see. The Old Kuopio Museum takes you to the world of history. The illustration exhibition for children based on the illustration book by Minna Canth and the shop sized for children are sure to delight.

Traditional hills for sledging in Kuopio Sledging is possible in Kuopio in the following areas: - The hill of the Kuopio city at Valkeisenlampi pond in Niirala. Valkeisenkatu 7 - Antikkala in Puijo, Kallantie/Ruutikellarinkatu - The Brahe’s park at Kuopionlahti bay, also known as the park from the children’s program Pikku Kakkonen. Especially popular among the children of the city centre. Brahenkatu 5 - The Lippumäki recreational area at Petonen. Rauhalahdentie 66 The existence of the traditional sledging hills depends on the snow situation and the activity of the locals – a sledging hill can appear anywhere, for example at a children's park. Adults must make sure that the area where children are sledging is safe for both the children and other people using the area.

Kuopio’s museums are always interesting places to visit. A variety of exhibitions are open for those interested in days gone by and those in to modern developments.

Old Kuopio Museum

The Old Kuopio Museum is made up of eleven old wooden houses. The oldest buildings in the group date from the late 1700’s and the youngest date from the late 1800’s. The rooms inside the buildings show the residences of different families from the 1800’s up until the 1930’s. The museum also contains a pharmacy building, exhibition hall, and the room of writer Minna Canth. Kuopio Art Museum

The Art Museum began operating in a former bank in 1980. The museum is situated right in the centre of town next to the cathedral, near the market square. It functions as the North Savo district’s art museum and it’s tasks include the exhibition of local visual arts, documentation and research. Kuopio Automobile Museum

The Automobile Museum is an enthusiast’s dream. All of the work is done voluntarily and supported by sponsors. There is an abundance of cars, many of which are in fine running order. The J. V. Snellman Home Museum

The J. V. Snellman Home Museum is in the building that Snellman lived in for most of the time he was in Kuopio, from 1845–1849. The building is a typical 1800’s residence of a fairly wealthy family, with hipped roof and six pane windows. The museum is decorated with furniture and articles belonging to the Snellman family. Finland’s first regional photographic centre, VB Photographic Centre has operated in Kuopio since 1987. RIISA Orthodox Church Museum of Finland

Riisa is one of the most remarkable Orthodox church museums in Europe. For the most part, the collection represents the 1700's and 1800’s, but older artifacts date back to 1100’s. The hall contains Byzantine culture, Finland’s Orthodox church history, iconostasis representative of the 19th century academical school of thought, and a hall where icons from different centuries picture martyrdom on red walls. PUIJO Three marked nature trails leave from the peak of Puijo, all of which are about two kilometers in length. The trails snaking through Puijo’s forests are located in protected natural areas, old-growth forests, groves and traditional landscapes. While exploring trails and their flora and fauna, you can get to know the area’s cultural history and the Puijo Tower. NEULANIEMI The Kolmisoppi-Neulamäki area’s three nature trails pass through a nature reserve. The routes are between two and four kilometers. The hiking trails pass through the beautiful Vuorilampi area, Neulamäki rocks, large boulders carved during the ice age, ancient forests, ferns and the old Yoldia seashore from about 11,000 years ago. You can begin your hike from the northwest side of the Kolmisoppi pond at the end of Juontotie or the parking lot on the side of Pilpantie. Neulamäki’s trail has a connection to a fire place, stocked with firewood, located in Vuorilampi’s northwest end. (Pilpantie 6)

RAUHALAHTI Katiskaniemi’s nature trail is a two-kilometer-long route that starts behind the hotel and circles around the Katiskaniemi shorelines. The path is located mostly in the protected area. The most valuable parts of the region are deciduous groves and stunning pine forests sprouting out of the rocks. Along the way, check out the groves of vegetation and the plants and animals which live on the beach and in the water. The mark of man can be seen in the lumbering cabin, Jätkänkämppä and pastures. Julkulanmäki lean-to. Located in Julkulanmäki is a scenic vantage point which overlooks the North Kallavesi archipelago and is part of the beautiful Puijo recreation area. The lean-to is just off the main trail. It can be reached most easily from Puijonsarvi via the one-kilometre trail which starts from the outdoor statue of Aaro Jalkanen. RANTA-TOIVALA Ranta-Toivala boasts nature trails measuring two kilometers and five kilometers winding through the protected area. Halmejoki (Halme River) is known for its different groves, from which the region’s most spectacular groves can be found beside the streams passing through the area. Hikers can explore the diverse bird life living around Halmejoki. With luck, you may even hear the call of a bright yellow Oriole, a beautiful fluted whistle. Vuorilampi campfire site.

Vuorilampi includes the Tervaruukki-Pilpa recreation area, which is a nature reserve. A built-in fireplace is located in a beautiful landscape in Jylhä Neulamäki at the north end of the pond. There is also a place to chop firewood. It is accessible from Pilpantie leading to Pilppa from Leväsentie. By the roadside there are parking spaces and an info point have been built, which is about 1.5 kilometres away. The info point can also be accessed via Neulamäki’s spectacular about 6-kilometre long nature trail. Pilpantie 6

Cold tolerance has been shown to improve after only a few dips while different aches and joint pain have been found to be relieved due to regular dips. An experienced swimmer tells how swimming helps with back pain. The cold therapy can also be a help to those suffering from rheumatism, asthma and MS, especially on a regular basis. fits include increased blood circulation and improved metabolism. Because of this it is also believed that skin stays firmer. Some also swear that it is a protection against the flu. In addition to the physical benefits, winter swimmers say that they feel relief from stress, the mind is said to clear, just like when meditating. Before taking up winter swimming it is good to talk to your doctor if you suffer from heart problems or high blood pressure. Ice swimming is a suitable hobby for all ages. Families visit the sauna and the youngest swimmers are only six or seven years old. Older enthusiasts have already past 80 years of age, so a brave winter dip is a suitable activity for the whole family. Winter swimming doesn’t require specialized equipment. Compared to summer swimming the only difference is the use of shoes or socks on the way to the water, and some put a hat on too. fishing spots. A beginner may find these spots due to clusters of fishing holes, and thus benefit from good fishing spots. Without such clusters, you can start where the fish hang around during summer, which is next to reeds and headlands. THERE ARE DIFFERENT methods of ice fishing. The methods differ from each other based on the jig i.e. lure in use. If the fish take bait easily, a vertical jig is the best to use. A type of weighted jig called mormuska works better when the fish take bait poorly.

Those who arrive by car can park under the market square, in the Toriparkki. The parking hall can be reached from Puijonkatu, from both directions. From the south you arrive on the K3 floor and from the north on the K1 and K2 floors. The corridors between the floors are painted in green. The three-floor parking garage has color-coded doors to help you find back to the car.

This underground avenue leads to Sokos and Torikulma, where you can have a cup of coffee or shop to your heart’s content while having access to a grocery and the Viking restaurant Harald.

The route through Carlson is a handy way to get to the Entertainment Centre Minna, where you can find the movie theatre Finnkino Scala. In the same building you can find yourself grocery shopping, bowling, dining in a restaurant, at a dentist’s appointment, working out at the gym or getting a haircut. www.digimag.fi

AAPELI

Going through here you can get to the Aapeli shopping centre, where there are places to eat, opticians, phone shops and numerous clothes shops. For example, Cybershop offers clothing with personality and shock hair dyes.

The shopping centre Vihtori provides you with an optician, groceries, Rax Buffet and Vaahteranmäen Mumma ja Pappa, that sells handcrafted Finnish wood products. In the front lobby you can also find an ATM.

APAJA

At the centre of the marketplace lies Apaja. From here you can get straight to the Kauppahalli for some light shopping or take the escalator down under the marketplace, where you can stop for a quick bite or more shopping. In Apaja you can find many restaurants serving up the delicacies of the world, like the Nepalese Mandala.

THE MARKET HALL

The traditional Market Hall of Kuopio is known from its many small boutiques, that sell local handicrafts, Finnish souvenirs and both salty and sugary treats, just to name a few. If you’re craving for a book to read or a movie to watch, the Rosebud bookshop can sate your needs.

ONE OF THE finest attractions in Kuopio is the market square that has dominated the city center since 1818. Numerous market stalls sell a traditional Savo delicacy called kalakukko, or Finnish fish pasty: fish baked inside a loaf of bread. At the market place one can buy pastries, berries, vegetables and handicrafts among many other things. There are also several cafés and food stalls at the market square.

THE SECOND OLDEST shopping center in Kuopio is a well-known structure in the city’s setting. Torikulma offers home decor products, natural health products and gift items. Clas Ohlson can be found in the basement floor. The department store has it’s own car park on the roof and direct connection to the market square car park.

THE SHOPPING CENTER is designed by architect Kaj Michael and it was opened in 1966, which makes it the oldest shopping center in Finland. It is located at the busiest corner of the city at the junction of Kauppakatu and Haapaniemenkatu, at the corner of the market square. H-Talo has fashion, home decoration and gift items, lingerie, beauty care, pharmacy and electronics.

THIS SHOPPING CENTER is situated beside the pedestrian street on the corner of the market square. Shopping possibilities include many large clothing store chains, jewelry, watch and cosmetic stores, an opticians, electronics and bank services. You can enjoy a special treat or lunch at the café while taking a break from shopping. The underground car park can be reached from Minna Canthin katu.

APAJA, FOUND UNDER the Market Hall, is a wonderful ensemble that links the market square car park and the shopping blocks and shopping centers that surround the market square. Kuopio City’s services and tourism information, Kuopio Info and many restaurants and specialized shops are all situated at Apaja. You can get to Apaja through the Market Hall and market car park and through other shopping centers. There are also public toilets and a child care room at Apaja.

IN ADDITION TO Kuopio’s biggest bookstore, shopping center Minna holds the biggest toy shop in the city, a clothing outlet, a clothes shop, a jewelry shop, a bag shop, and an eyewear store. The underground car park can be reached from Minna Canthin katu. Minna has an indoor play area for children.

ENTERTAINMENT CENTER MINNA specializes in wellbeing, health, entertainment, food and drink and also has a grocery store. The Finnkino Scala cinema, a bowling alley-restaurant and a gym are all found at Iso Cee. The center is directly connected to the Carlson department store. The department store has it’s own car park on the roof. Access from Savonkatu.

SINCE 1902 THE idyllic Market Hall has offered high quality products in a laid back atmosphere in the heart of the city right by the market square. The building was renovated in 2012. This 114-year-old hall is a popular shopping spot as it offers groceries, souvenirs, meat, fish, bread, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, spices, coffee, sweets, flowers, books and handicrafts, cafés and meals.

CARLSON IS SITUATED right in the center of the city beside the market square on the right hand side looking from the City Hall. The store has women’s, men’s and children’s clothing and footwear, toys, children’s accessories along with cosmetic products and a beauticians. The Kodin-Carlson building on Kauppakatu has a home electronics and sports department, home décor and kitchen utensils department. The department store has it’s own car park on the roof. SEKTORI IS SPECIALISED in health and physical well-being, offering a variety of health services. The shopping center holds a clothing shop, a shoe shop, a jewelry shop and a café-restaurant. The elevator makes moving around easier, and the shopping center gives direct access to the market square’s underground car park.

Kuopio is a strong art, design and culture city, and is the home of many impressive Finnish designers and brands. Here are a few of them.

MINNA SUURONEN DESIGN Designer Minna Suuronen’s boutique (Kauppakatu 45), located in Kuopio’s Market Hall, is full of unique clothing and accessories. Products made of linen, wool and cotton exude a mystical atmosphere of the forest.

RITVA-LIISA POHJALAINEN Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen is an artist and designer who works with art glass, fashion and jewellery designing. Her design and art are sold by RLP Design. Company’s web site lists best of the retailers: www.rlp.fi

HANNA KORVELA Hanna Korvela is one of Finland’s biggest and most respected carpet designers. The products are sold in over 15 countries around the world. Korvela’s most famous product, the Duetto carpet, has won countless international awards. Kuopio rugs can be found in Sisustus Picaso (Puijonkatu 24) and Vepsäläinen (Kartanonkatu 4).

STUDIO HALONEN Beauty and function are the pillars of Studio Halonen (Kuivinniementie 25). The products range from wooden cups painted with different patterns to other small products for your home and table. The studio is open by appointment. Behind the company is designer Annamaija Halonen.

PETRIFUN Originating from Kuopio with sales both nationally and internationally, Petrifun specializes in men’s shirts, which are sold in its own stores as well as other retailers. The collection can be found in Kuopio’s own Petrifun store, located in the shopping centre Matkus (Matkuksentie 60), as well as the Sokos Department store (Haapaniemenkatu 24-26) and the Moda shop (Haapaniemenkatu 15). The founder and managing director of the company is Petri Satuli.

JENNI RUTONEN DESIGN (JRD) Designer and goldsmith Jenni Rutonen has a mission: “You are the jewelry”. In line with her mission, a good piece of jewelry is part of a human’s story. Products made by the award-winning young jewelry designer can be purchased in Kuopio at, for example, Sininen Silta (Minna Canthin katu 27) and the company’s own web shop (shop.jennirutonen.com).

LUMOAVA Lumoava brings together Finnish design and jewelry making. The pieces of jewelry are made by Saurum from Kuopio. These beautiful and elegant pieces are sold at, for example, the jewelry store Timanttiset in the shopping center Minna (Haapaniemenkatu 18) and in the shopping center Matkus (Matkuksentie 60). Famous designers of Kuopio are for example Aleksi Eelis, Pauliina K and Heikki Hartikainen.

THE HANDICRAFT OF THE MARKET HALL Strawberries, blueberries, and Finland are the concept bases of the beanies handmade by Seija Niemelä and sold at her boutique (Kauppakatu 45). Handmade glass art, ceramics, birch bark work and jewelry are also great souvenirs.

PERUNARIESKA Unleavened bread from the Savo region, called “rieska,” is made with barley, potato or other hulled grain.

FINLAND ICE MARATHON 2019 FINLAND ICE MARATHON has made Kuopio famous in the skating circles around the wor-

ld. The event has transformed many times through its history but despite the slush and freezing cold the ice marathon, with its peripheral events, still moves thousands of ice skaters and viewers. Finland Ice Marathon is also popular internationally. It has had viewers from a lot of countries for over 30 years, especially from the Netherlands, where ice skating is incredibly popular. Sights of the Tahko Region

– 1 Huutavanholma Tahkovuori

Situated on the southern side of Tahko’s slopes, Huutavanholma is a 43 hectare steep, craggy, hilly terrain and a protected grove area. Huutavanholma is a popular area for hiking. The Pisa Conservation area

The Pisamäki scenery is one of Savo’s seven wonders. There are road signs to Pisa on the Siilinjärvi–Nurmes road (no.75), at the Lastukoski parking area and the Lastukoski–Venäänaho road (no.5701).

3 Nilsiä Museum

The museum is open during the winter/ spring and summer holiday seasons and for group reservations all year round. The basic exhibition displays the early history of the Nilsiä region, handcraft professions, school visits and sports history. There is a museum café and shop. Simolantie 41, Nilsiä.

There is a hiking trail at the top of the steep quartz Kinahmi ridge that offers wonderful views of well kept idyllic countryside. On the eastern slope you can explore the setting of the Pölkkypuro little village that has been preserved in its original condition.

Tahko has slopes which are suitable for people of all ages, from hills for the younger generation to alpine slopes for the more experienced. During the years 2019 and 2020 the slopes will see remarkable developments.

he slopes of Tahko will be developed with investments totalling 7 million euros by the year 2020. The biggest investments will focus on the new services building, the artificial snow system, a new ski lift and the development of children’s slopes. A special focus will be given on the development of the children’s slopes, so that good conditions will keep them interested in the sport. The first reforms are to start in the spring of 2019, when the work to make the children’s slope less steep and wider and the construction of the long-awaited services building will begin. SKI SLOPES

Tahko has a suitable slope for skiers of all sizes and skills. The free carpet lift takes you to the children's slope and children under 7 and wearing helmets can ride all ski lifts for free when accompanied by their parent. Minipolku is an adventure route for children. Werneri ski school teaches children over 4, with Kinos junior courses for children over 8. You can also satisfy the need for speed at Werneri Park at the front of the slopes, where you can sled or go around in a pole sled or a ski carousel.

PETTING ZOO

At the Tahko Farmi petting zoo visitors can admire the adorable farm animals and feed them according to instructions. The big tobogganing hill next to Farmi is free to use in the winter.

HORSE RIDING

The Tahko Farmi activity centre organize riding safaris for all skill levels and for the whole family. The stables are a home to many lovely ponies and horses. Small children can ride a horse led by an instructor. At Kinahmi horsefarm you can ride Icelandic horses. In wintertime the farm arranges leaded riding lessons and trail riding trips. Trips are made near the farm and on the Kinahmi hill.

QUAD BIKE RIDE

Children can practice riding a quad bike safely on the course at Tahko Farmi's yard. Farmi has quad bikes that are suitable for smaller children as well.

You can get to know the varied outdoors at Tahko with your family. The extensive ski track network includes routes suitable for children, and in your travels you can stop by at a lean-to or visit reindeer at the Ski cafĂŠ. You can also try snow shoes or ice fishing with your family.

Looking for geocaches hidden in Tahko area is an exciting activity for the whole family.

The activity park right next to the Tahko Spa offers many activities for children, teenagers and adults. In the winter, the local ice hockey rink gets frozen over, and the park is accessible to Tahko ski tracks.

The pool area has a swimming pool with four 25-metre lanes, therapy and recreation pool, jacuzzi, children's pool, water slide and refreshing outdoor pools. There is also a Wibit-water adventure course, where children can climb, slide and play with friends.

The Tahko Spa multifunction arena is available on reservation for floor-ball, volleyball, basketball, table tennis or badminton. The Tahko Spa also includes a six lane bowling alley.

The North Savo area has almost 1100 kilometers of maintained snowmobile routes.

he 25 km Tahko circuit encircles Tahko. Tahko also has connections in many directions meaning there are hundreds of kilometers of snowmobile tracks to choose from. The routes vary from those suitable for beginners to interesting, more technical routes for the more experienced riders. More and more often, people are renting snowmobiles for just one person at a time, even for the whole day. Tahko has well marked routes, and before leaving for the trek we give operating instructions and advice about the weather conditions. The snowmobile is equipped with a tracking device and you get a GPS to take with you. The tracks or snowmobiles in the Tahko area are exceptional with regards to maintenance and distance. Heading west you can go in the Iisalmi direction, heading north you can get to Rautavaara and further. Places for resting and sleeping are spread out appropriately along the routes. From Tahko it’s possible to ride up the eastern border all the way to Ruka or Levi.

HUNDREDS OF kilometers of snowmobile routes in the Kuo-

pio area allows excursions in many directions within the city area. To the west of Kuopio lies the 70 km route from Kuopio-Kaislastenlahti-Rytky-Korsujärvi-Pitkälahti-Kuopio. There are also links between Kuopio and Siilinjärvi, Nilsiä, Karttula, Suonenjoki, Leppävirta and Vehmersalmi.

Snowmobile around the Tahko! THE SNOWMOBILE TRAILS network of Tahko area was

greatly improved a while ago. For the 2018 season an official, roughly 20 kilometres long snowmobile trail around Tahko was opened, replacing the old trails. The new trail runs through the most versatile terrain the area has to offer, and it is ideal for casual enjoyment with friends or co-workers.

MARKED HIKING ROUTES IN TAHKO AREA: Tahkolahti route, 1.5 km (blue) Easy. No up or down hill, the route follows roads and a bridge. The route: start from Tahkolahti, go around the bay crossing the Sandels bridge and return to Tahkolahti

Huutavanholma nature reserve route, about 1.8 km (green) Moderatly easy. Follows a trail. Huutavanholma route is short, but moderately demanding, so it may not be suitable for people with bad legs or children. Good shoes with a grip are absolutely necessary. You can enter the trail from near the Tahkolahti parking area. Huutavanholma route connects with Kettukangas and Tahkomäki routes.

Pisa route Pisa route is 8.5 kilometers in length and moderately difficult, as the top of Pisa is 270 meters above the sea. The climb is made easier with resting spots, stairs and railings. The view in the nature reserve is a magnificent reward for making the climb. Making fire is forbidden in the nature reserve, but there is a resting place for eating at the top.

Tahkomäki route, 14.4 km (red) Moderately difficult. Tahkon kierto route goes all the way round Tahkomäki. Water flows down from the hill, so the path is often damp. The route has lots of up and down hill and some demanding sections. The vertical difference of the route is up to 195 meters. On the top of the hill there are slope restaurants and a magnificent vista towards Lake Syväri. There is a lengthy climb up and down Tahkomäki. THE LEGENDARY AFTER SKI'S THE REAL AND original after-skis of Pehku are here again, as the party bus and the restaurant are getting ready for the slalom season. Pehku serves as much as 1200 partiers in the best after-ski parties, and the main building accommodates an additional 120 guests. Savo's greatest midsummer festival is celebrated in Tahko. The festival has grown so rapidly that three years ago it was moved to the more spacious Tahko Event Park.
