If the Grand Palace complex is the physical heart of the nation, King Bhumibol Adulyadej was, indeed, the spiritual, and emotional heart. On Saturday Oct 15, two days after His Majesty the King passed away following a 70-year reign, more than 100,000 mourners gathered outside the Grand Palace to bid farewell to their beloved K i n g . Wi t h c a m e r a i n t o w, I d o c u m e n t e d this mournful yet historical moment.

Tribute B y m i d d a y, t h e c r o w d s h a d f o r m e d queues six rows deep down Maharat Road. Umbrellas bobbed above the crowd like life rafts in a black sea. People waited patiently outside the palace entrance. Guards allowed entrance to small groups, one group at a time. King Bhumipol’s body lies in state in Dusit Hall within the Palace complex, and mourners lined up to s i g n t h e R o y a l c o n d o l e n c e r e g i s t r y. Despite sweltering humidity and oppressive heat, the Thais remained ‘Jai yen’, cool-hearted, composed, and collectively calm. I marveled at their willingness to stand patiently and respectfully for hours in the sultry air. The Buddhist virtue of ‘Right conduct’ came to mind: no policing was needed despite the masses; no whistles blown, nor weapons drawn, nor areas cordoned off. T h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y, I w i t n e s s e d Buddhist dharma in action and universal acts of kindness and compassion. Vo l u n t e e r s h a n d e d o u t f r e e b o t t l e s o f water, moist towelettes, and boxes of food. Others passed out sticks topped with ammonia-soaked cotton swabs -- smelling salts -- inhaled to revive the weary and to prevent fainting from the heat and emotional stress. Rescue squads and ambulances stood ready to attend to those in need. A few vendors plied the road with food carts and drinks. I walked the queues offering my condolences. Many mourners clasped a favorite image of the King to their hearts. Photos of King Bhumibol’s life flashed before me in a random play of time: the King with Queen Sirikit in royal attire; the King as a young man composing at a piano; the King playing a saxophone or holding a camera; the King as a young monk; the King performing various altruistic acts. And perhaps the most iconic and endearing photo --- the King, leaning forward, compassionately touching the hand of an elderly woman, acknowledging her devotion. While I was sitting curbside, taking in the communal comfort around me, one woman shared her grief: “The King lives in our hearts now; Thai people think he’s in Dusita--the highest heaven. He’s looking down and watching us, protecting the country and the people”.

Tribute

Here in Nichada: Paying Respect to King Bhumibol At International School Bangkok, staff, parents and students came together to pay homage to a revered monarch. Black and white bunting draped the front gates of the school. A memorial service was held at the Chevron Theatre. Alumni sent in tributes. The Thai Parents Association honored the King in respectful silence, and members made black ribbon bows to hand out to those observing the mourning period. At the Chaengwattana Community Church, members held a special service to pay respect to the Thai monarch. Church Elder Rick Caynor invited Thai members of the congregation to stand and told them, “ We love you. We pray for you. And we pray for your country. Then the entire congregation stood quietly to observe a moment of silence.

Heard it Through the Grapevine

The Chicken Man in Seecheitong! I might regret telling you about one of my absolute farvourite places, as it is busy enough as it is.... But, then again, sharing is caring... So here we go! On the right hand side, almost up by Chaengwattana Road is a small restaurant, almost like a " hole in the wall". It is run by a very nice Thai couple. They have some tables & a small menu with soups and salads, but their specialities are really their grilled pork, chicken and fish! They start grilling early in the morning, and by 10am their first offerings are ready to be bought. Their chicken thighs are really some of the most succulent chicken I have gotten anywhere in Thailand ! It is marinated in their secret reciepe, and grilled on coal. The taste is un-belivable! It comes with sticky rice and a wonderful spicy dressing. Everything is wrapped up in bags, ready for t a k e a w a y, u n l e s s y o u w a n t t o e a t t h e r e . I t ’s a very popular place with the locals and is always full by lunchtime. Sometimes you will see a l-o-n-g line of maids waiting to

buy their chicken for either themselves or their farang families. They are usually sold out of the chicken by 1pm, but on Fridays it can be empty already at 11am!! Look for the little steel-chimney on the grill and see if they have fish, chicken or pork in their glass shelf. They do NOT make any deep fried chicken there, so if you see that, then you are in the wrong stall ! We h a v e u s e d t h e m s e v e r a l t i m e s f o r big orders for parties, and the quality are just as good as when you buy it to eat the street. They are closed on Sundays. They do not speak English at all, so when we have ordered for specific occasions we have used our maid or driver to help out with the translation, but normally you go a long way with a smile and gestures ! Children at Sparrow Home are provided with meals, clothing, a warm bed, toys, healthcare and schooling after they reach the age of 4. They are taught basic life skills, good behavior and how to share and care for each other as it would be in a real home. NNR Charity: Girl in USA Sells Strawberries D o n a te s U S $ 4 3 2 to N o nt h a b u r i H o m e l e s s S h e l te r This is a sweet story of a 9-year old girl. Her story begins in Gilbert, Arizona, USA, and ends in Bangkok, Thailand. Ends might not be the right word. Her story is the start of hope for many who are at the end of their own. Meet Stella James. Last December, I made a visit home to the US, hauling half of Thailand with me: hand crafted goodies, exotic foods, electronics, movies and more. The biggest hit of all was the hand braided t-shirt rugs made by my friends at Home for the Destitute (H4D). The q u e s t i o n s f l e w. H o w ? W h o ? My niece, Stella, was particularly moved and determined to help. With lined paper and pencil, she b r a i n s t o r m e d . (Below is her selfmade marketing flyer.)

I visited home again this s u m m e r. A s u s u a l I saw Stella, but this visit was extra special. She had something for me: her d o n a t i o n m o n e y. Four hundred and thirty two dollars. All of it, neatly organized, and pressed in her tight little fist. She beamed as she presented me with every last cent. That’s when the feelings from my heart snuck up to my eyes. It wasn’t just money collected and donated. It was so much more. Stella had opened her heart to strangers and let them in. This little girl, nine years of age, is teaching us that even the youngest of hearts when full of LOVE can do great things!

Hi, I am Father Paolo, an Italian missionary priest, working in Thailand in the Bangkok metropolitan area, and more exactly in the province of Nonthaburi. I arrived in Thailand five years ago. After studying the Thai language for 2 years, I have started my missionary work in Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Nonthaburi. As my first assignment, I was asked to take care of about 80 kids, from 1 to 16 years old, that live in a center close to the church: the center is called “Home for Hope”. The kids that enter our center have family problems: their parents separated or abandoned them; sometimes their parents are drug addicted or in jail; sometimes they come from a poor family so their parents cannot send them t o s c h o o l o r r a i s e t h e m . Charity Profiles sometimes differs from the Buddhist way of thinking about the Karma. All these kids that live now in the Home f o r H o p e a n d t h e A n g e l ’s H o m e c o m e from the slums where we, as Saint Martin Foundation, organize regular visits and activities. Within our Parish there are many slum areas. Through the efforts of some social workers, we try to develop these slum areas not only by giving financial help but especially by offering training. These social works are the ones to suggest those kids that, because of their situation, could be entering either Home for Hope or Angels’ Home. All the people we meet trough the activities and work of the Saint Martin Foundation are Buddhist and very few choose to be Catholic. However, we do what we do because of our faith. The heart of our Foundation is in fact the spread of the Good News. As Saint Francis of Assisi once said to his confreres: “ P r e a c h t h e g o s p e l , a n d i f n e c e s s a r y, u s e w o r d s . ” We t r y t o m a k e J e s u s k n o w n through our help to these people in need. As you enter the restaurant you are welcomed by a friendly staff who, true to the Land of Smiles, always greet you with a smile and a hug for their regular customers. The setting is very clean, elegant, and comfortable. The dark brown booths and chairs offer a little seclusion as well as give the entire restaurant a modern yet classically comfortable atmosphere. And of course, because this is the beautiful Thailand and community of Nichada, sitting at any table you have a wonderful view of the lake’s crisp blue waters.

Le Bouchon’s sports bar also has a billiard table and dartboard for those who just want a place to hang out, grab a drink or two and have fun. The bartenders and waiters at the sports bar are there to please and will happily put on whichever game you c a m e t o w a t c h . To u p t h e i r c o m m u n i t y involvement the Le Bouchon Sports Bar also hosts a quiz night called The Quiz! The Quiz runs twice a month and allows teams of 4 or more to come, enjoy a cold one and compete in a game of smarts against others in their community for various prizes.

The menu at Le Bouchon offers a wide variety of French and Italian cuisine. From a simple pizza or pasta dish to the most delicious lamb shank, Le Bouchon surely covers every spectrum of great food. Of course, not to be outdone, the desserts are delightful as well and melt in your mouth with richness. All the products and ingredients used are fresh, and the dishes have the warmth that only comes from that

For those who are sports fans, Le Bouchon offers their unique sports bar, complete with sports paraphernalia lining the walls, right next door. As you eat your meal you can gaze at photos of sports athletes, team

Travel: Japan

Skiing in Niseko, Japan: St. Moritz of the Orient

We f i r s t d i s c o v e r e d N i s e k o , H o k k a i d o , Japan, five years ago. It started when a friend enthusiastically described c h a m p a g n e d r y, w a i s t d e e p s n o w a n d skiing in the trees. To b e h o n e s t , when we heard about skiing in Niseko, Japan, we were quite sceptical. But a ski trip to Japan sounded more convenient. Instead of flying back to Canada and skiing half jet-lagged, we could fly to Niseko, a relatively short flight away from Bangkok. Niseko sounded like a great ski destination. Since our first trip, we have been back in Niseko every year for the last 5 years. It is addicting. S a p p o r o i s s i x a n d a h a l f h o u r s a w a y, o n T h a i A i r w a y s . There are vans, taxis and shuttle buses to Niseko. I highly recommend booking your transportation in advance.

A one-way trip in a van (driver included) usually costs around US$400. Ye s , i t i s q u i t e a s t i c k e r s h o c k , b u t it is better to leave it to the capable hands of the local driver than trying to figure out where to go on icy roads. Travel: Japan that answers your craving for a big burger madefrom local Hokkaido beef. For me, I personally like driving to Hanayoshi in Niseko town for sushi. It is possibly the best sushi I have ever had. Hanayoshi are extremely popular, so I recommend calling ahead to reserve a table. For fresh produce, I like to drive into Kutchan town. They have amazing fresh p r o d u c e a n d s e a f o o d i n t h e M a x Va l u or Lucky supermarkets. There is also a supermarket in Niseko, which has pricier imported produce and cooked foods. I strongly recommend making reservations ahead of time, because by the end of October most restaurants are booked up. Many hotels and service apartments would be happy to help you make reservations in Japanese. If you couldn’t make reservations in time for the upcoming ski season, there are always pizza deliveries and food trucks. Niseko did not disappoint; it snowed almost everyday we were there. The lake effect from Siberia blows in a few feet of fresh dry power almost e v e r y d a y ! Ye s , d r y c h a m p a g n e s n o w ; i t i s n o t c r u d d y o r i c y. Yo u f e e l l i k e you are floating in this white stuff. It doesn’t take long to cover the Japanese bamboos that grew like weeds on the hill. The view on the mountains was simply breathtaking. Although it is not big mountain skiing, and the terrain is not as challenging for some expert skiers who prefer

steeper terrains, the waist deep snow in the trees more than make up for it. On regular groomed runs families can enjoy a great snow day and meet up at the lodge for delicious local Japanese c u i s i n e . Yo u h a v e t h e c h o i c e o f p i p i n g hot ramen, Japanese curry on rice or salmon bowls. Finish off the meal with Hokkaido ice cream. Have you tried night skiing yet? If you haven’t had enough of skiing i n t h e d a y, t r y t h e n i g h t s k i i n g i n Niseko. About three quarters of the Hirafu, Hanazono and Annapuri are well lit for night skiers and snow boarders. It is a blast! A f t e r a l o n g d a y p l a y i n g i n t h e s n o w, you might like to try a relaxing Onsen; public baths found in many hotels, and privately owned bath houses. Please find out the local practices and bath etiquettes and decide if this is for you. If you had enough of beach resorts, why not give skiing in Niseko, Hokkaido a try? Sheryl Ang-Chisolm

Steps with Theera is a life skills and employability centre for people with special needs. It offers students a vocational twoyear program as well as hands-on skills such as those needed to work in a café. The staff cooking your poached eggs with salmon and avocado lime dressing or serving your creamy cappuccino are students at the centre and are practicing valuable skills which will allow them to lead productive and independent lives.
