Letter from NNR President
Passing the Torch: New Charity Chairperson Named I would like to take this opportunity to thank Susan Curtis for being an NNR Board Member for the last 5 years. Susan's passion and positive energy have always been a bright light in any room. All of her efforts have been much appreciated. Susan is still very involved in her charity work as well as her activities at the Chaengwattana Community Church. Susan is still a great resource for our Board. With the "passing of the torch" so to speak, we are very lucky to have Linda Feltham step into Susan's role as Charity Coordinator. Linda has been a great advocate for our local charities already, networking with all of our charities and finding ways to help them all. She has been tireless in visiting our charities, assessing needs, and organizing our first ever NNR Charity Coffee. In my household, we are preparing to celebrate Christmas and have a break from school. Whatever your family travel plans and culinary tastes, on behalf of the NNR Board, I wish you good health, safe travels, and great food! All the best in the new year! Mare Harvey, NNR Chairperson

Bazaar Report
NNR’s 2013 Charity Bazaar a Huge Success Biggest Year in Bazaar History The NNR would like to send a HUGE thank you to our local Nonthaburi community for making this year’s bazaar the most successful to date. With your support, the total raised was Baht 527,145 for use in helping charities. In addition to posting our biggest year-to-year increase, this year’s bazaar also had the most vendors, making it the shopping event of the year! This was the first year the bazaar was held at the Chaengwattana Community Church, and our new venue provided plenty of buying opportunities— everything from stainless steel to jewelry to Christmas items to organic foods were to be found. And in addition to the shopping, there were also plenty of prizes to be won, giving attendees the opportunity to take even more goodies home. The funds raised by the NNR from raffle tickets, entrance fees and corporate sponsorships will fund ancillary donations for our eight regularly sponsored charities. With these funds we also have the ability to donate to other worthy causes, including the relief fund organized by our local Filipino community and the YWCA, which provides summer camp opportunities for local Thai children. Thank you again to all who attended and helped with this year’s Charity Bazaar!
Generous corporate sponsor Asian Tigers was on hand giving out shopping bags and plenty of other goodies.
More than 80 vendors were at the bazaar with beautiful, unique wares.
One of NNR’s charity beneficiaries, Rainbow House, was selling goods made by their residents. 4
Two of our many volunteers for the day - door gals --- Pascale Kervyn and Laura Sadowski.
Shopping opportunities abound!

Thank you, Shoppers, Raffle Ticket Buyers, and Volunteers Yes, we mean YOU! The NNR Charity Bazaar would not be possible without the support of hundreds of people who purchased raffle tickets, worked as volunteers, and came out to shop for a good cause. Our commitment to you is to work tirelessly in making sure your generous donation of time and money reaches those in need and help make a positive difference in the world.
British Community Gathers for Fun & Fireworks, Donates Proceeds from Guy Fawkes Night Jenny McRobbie and I often meet up at nearby tables on a Sunday night at Milano’s restaurant. In early October, we started talking about ‘Guy Fawkes’ night and that it would be good to celebrate this traditionally British event with everyone in Nichada. One of our first ideas was to do something relatively small in the restaurant. We talked to someone that worked there who knew how to put on a fireworks display and started to organise a traditional night with some sausages, baked potatoes and beans. We originally thought that around 30 people would come along and began to advertise what we were doing. However, to our surprise we received an excellent response from the community, and found we had to amend the original seating plan and food orders. We were overwhelmed and very grateful to all the families who joined the festivities. Everything went well and the great food and fireworks were enjoyed by all 85 people who attended. It is because of this excellent turnout that we were able to donate 7,000 baht to the NNR to help them continue with their hard work assisting charities in Bangkok. Our thanks go to Milano’s restaurant for allowing us to host this event in their restaurant and for their good service. Thanks must also go to Asia West Fine foods for an extra last minute delivery of sausages which were provided free of charge. My personal thanks go to Jenny McRobbie, who first thought of this good idea and who spent a lot of her time arranging the invitations, tickets and more. Caroline Chalmers 7

November Social: Bollywood Dancing with NNR The NNR’s November Happy Hour with Bollywood dancing took place at Carla Stopler’s home in The Regent. On behalf of the NNR Committee I would like to thank Carla and Irit --- for making it such a convivial and pleasurable evening for us all. Thank you to Carla for being so welcoming and inviting us into her beautiful home. A special thanks to Irit, as anyone who can teach me a Bollywood dance has to be a great teacher. It was great fun and easier than I thought! Thank you to the beautiful bevy of dancers for the dance demonstration. They made it look so easy, and they all kept smiling! I know that a lot of hard work and practice went into your performance and it was seamless and very alluring in those racy costumes. Well done, ladies! Sarah Glaze, NNR Socials Chair I'd like to thank all involved for making this such a great social event. I wasn't going to attend because I'd been at an event all day in Bangkok, but a good friend talked me into it. We arrived and started socializing with new people right away. Everyone was very friendly. It was nice to make new connections. It's always fun to try the new foods and beverages people share. The Bollywood dance demonstration was fantastic! Wow, those ladies did a great job. Next it was our turn to learn a small routine. Irit taught us the moves in an easy step-by-step method. Everyone had a lot of fun learning. We're now planning to sign up for the classes! Thank you to NNR for holding these monthly events. They’re such a great way to meet new people and learn new a skill. Delcie Jensen
Happy Hour with Bollywood dancing was a lot of fun. It was my first time at an NNR social, and I had a great time. I met new people and enjoyed the wine. Kyunghee Hertel

Charity Spotlight: Kids Action for Kids
Thani Talk ~Dec/Jan 20132013-2014
Kids Action for Kids Help Change Lives Club Joins Scandinavian Ladies Group for Dec. 14 Fundraiser “The Scandinavian Ladies” group and Kids Action for Kids (KAFK), a high school club at ISB, have joined hands to host a Christmas Bazaar featuring activities, food and crafts at the Dec. 14th Nichada market at the new Nichada Plaza. “This special event is organized to raise funds for Kids Action for Kids”, Bazaar Leader Anne Gry Ranchil said. Kids Action for Kids works with Operation Smile to fund surgeries for children with cleft lip, cleft palate and facial deformities. KAFK, founded in Norway in 2009, is a student-run organization assisted by some adults and chaired by Martin Brekke, a senior at ISB. Martin said he got the inspiration to found KAFK together with his brothers and cousins after a middle school trip to Mae Sot for one of Operation Smile’s surgery missions. “When I saw the children before and after the surgery, I understood what kind of difference this made in their lives, and that I could actually help make this immediate change for many more kids,” said Martin.“We decided we wanted to help, and started the fundraising first in Norway.” “Since 2009, KAFK has financed surgeries for around 400 children in Thailand,” Martin said. “100% of the funds raised go directly to surgeries, as all administrative costs are covered by the organization’s board members. Every surgery costs 15,000 baht on average. Our organization pays 7,500 baht and DTAC matches every baht collected, so we are able to double the amount. The great thing about this charity is that everyone, young and old, can participate and make a difference in other people’s lives. It is also important for us to create synergy between our home country and our host country, Thailand. In that sense, we hope to be a role model for other international students to follow our example”. “DTAC is majority owned by Norwegian Telenor, and it was natural for us (KAFK) to look for a company with links to Norway. Since DTAC was already working with Operation Smile, we asked for co-operation. We then decided to work together and pay 50% of the surgeries each,” said Torgunn Aas Reggestad, Secretary for Kids Action for Kids. “For this project we have the same goals,” said Nattawan Sasipibool, DTAC’s Senior Vice President for Social Responsibility. “We also like the way Kids Action for Kids work, where kids and youth help other kids and youth.” For the Dec.14 Bazaar, a group of kids have made bracelets and Christmas decorations for sale. The high school KAFK Club will be selling hotdogs and drinks, and hosting games and activities. You can find more about the program for the Bazaar in coming advertisements around Nichada and here in Thani Talk on page 14. Please come support Kids Action for Kids and help create many more happy smiles! Kids Action for Kids website: www.kidsactionforkids.org Torgunn Aas Reggestad, Board member, Kids Action for Kids

Charity Spotlight:Volunteer Testimonial
Thani Talk ~Dec/Jan 20132013-2014
A Morning at Baan Ratchawadee In addition to one-time donations for special projects, NNR also supports eight local charities on an on-going basis, providing much-needed steady, continuing support. Baan Ratchawadee Girls Home is one such regular recipient. New volunteer Marie Lewis shares a first-person account of her recent visit to the Home. October 31 was my first experience visiting Baan Ratchawadee, a home for disabled females including children and teens. A few of us, who initially met and bonded through the New Parent Orientation at ISB, as well as some friends from the church I attend, had the privilege of going with Susan Curtis and her friend Sylvia. The facility on Tiwanon Road Soi 1 is not far from Nichada, and on the same soi are homes for the blind, disabled, orphaned babies, etc. We were met by Julia, who manages the care at Baan Ratchawadee, and she gave us a 10 minute Power Point presentation. To our joy, during the presentation Susan and Sylvia carried the girls that they visit each week into this “day care center” we were in. They were all so happy and smiling and excited to see each other! No words really needed to be said; the joy was apparent in the givers and the receivers. Feeling a little nervous about what to expect, we followed Julia upstairs to one of the wards, where she assigned us to feed certain teens and women. Being a registered nurse, I had imagined the worst as far as the facility and condition of the residents. Though it was initially difficult to see so many “children” in their bright pink shirts and sharing beds, the facility appeared clean and the residents cared for. We had been cautioned that many of the residents are actually grown women but appear like children since their bodies look like a young child’s. Most have cerebral palsy and other challenges. Julia assigned the three of us who are nurses to the more difficult cases. We were told that contrary to our knowledge about sitting up to eat to prevent aspiration, the residents are used to being fed while lying on their backs and actually will cough if they sat up. Using a plastic ketchup bottle, with some powder thickener and a bottle of high nutrient/high fiber supplement (thanks to the NNR), I squirted a teaspoon into Alune’s mouth and used a soft baby spoon to catch the excess. It was a slow process but we got into a rhythm. Other residents slowly sucked on bottles held to their mouths. Alune’s eyes would especially brighten when Julia would come to check on us and make funny faces at her! I tried to think of songs I knew, not lullabies because that would be too hard. We sang and rocked with the music playing on the radio, too. I will never forget sitting Alune up, letting her legs and feet dangle, and turning her face towards the window. Her eyes became more intense as she could see outside. As I held her and talked about the trees and birds, I rubbed the skin on her back. I noticed her spine was so very deformed, a scoliosis that could not begin to be compared to my own daughter’s (whom I have worried about). A sweet feeling came over me. I had come to help, and yet Alune, who could not speak, turn herself over, or open her contracted hands and feet, taught me more in those short couple of hours. It is my understanding that Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-12 p.m., there is a need for at least 13 volunteers (the more the better!) to feed some of the more severely malnourished residents at Baan Ratchawadee. Susan Curtis is the NNR contact. Please text her at 080-043-2735 to let her know you’re coming. No experience is necessary. A copy of your passport is required. We meet at the Lakeside residence parking area at 9:45 a.m. Marie Lewis 21

NNR Tour Tales
NNR’s November Tour of Ancient City Outdoor Museum of Miniature Landmarks I like visiting historical places. I find that it becomes more attractive and interesting whenever nature and history meet. The Ancient City is a perfect example of how history and nature can coincide to make an attractive place. Ancient City – or “Muang Boran” in Thai – is a park constructed under the patronage of Lek Viriyaphant that’s spread over 200 acres in the shape of Thailand. It’s dubbed as the world’s largest outdoor museum and it’s situated in Samut Prakan province. After a one-and-half-hour drive from Nichada Thani, we arrived at the Ancient City. My five friends and I rented a golf cart while four other friends hired bikes. This allowed us to drive around at our own pace and stop whenever we wanted. As we rode around, we stopped and witnessed different time periods, such as Sukhothai, Rattanakosin and Ayutthaya. The city features 116 structures of Thailand’s famous monuments and architectural attractions, in miniature form. It was a joy to experience and learn about Thailand’s history. Snacks and drinks are available from various areas dotted around the park and there are many restrooms throughout the park as well, making it well accommodated. There is also a floating market replica where we got local, delicious Thai food. There are also lots of places to sit and relax in the shade, just enjoying the great atmosphere and peace and quiet. It is also a popular place for kids and school excursions. I think to see this place properly we should take at least four hours. I would like to thank our tour coordinator Alexandra Ries and the nine lovely ladies who were great company at the Ancient City. I recommend visiting the Ancient City with your family as it will give you a glance at the Thai culture and all the wonderful things that you are going to be experiencing while staying in Thailand. Receive Your Monthly Invoices in English My family has been in Nichada since earlier this year, and I only recently learned that many service providers can send your monthly invoices in English. The call was a relatively quick and painless one to make. The providers that can accommodate invoices in English include DTAC, AIS, True Visions, and True Online. (I did call both the water and electricity companies and neither can provide invoices in English.) It’s very useful to be able to read itemized descriptions of charges. Monique Langer
Excellent Free Software for Recovering Data Have you ever had your hard drive crash on you and lost all your photos? Yes, it happened to me and I had not backed up the last couple of holiday albums onto my external hard drive. It was a horrible feeling. With some searching on the internet, my dear husband found a free software, Pandora Recovery, and downloaded it to my computer. I plugged my memory card from my camera into my computer and it was able to recover almost all my pictures that had been deleted! I had deleted my pictures off the memory card on my camera BUT had not formatted it, so the pictures were still “there” even though I couldn't see them. I hope you never need to use it, but if you do it’s an excellent tool to have. Charlotte Sanders

Where to find Neighborhood ATMS? Now that the ATMs outside the old Villa supermarket are gone, try the following places to get cash: 1) Krungsri bank branch in the old Villa parking lot 2) ISB high school cafeteria 3) Just outside the new Villa at Nichada Plaza 4) Next to 7-11 outside the main Nichada gate (opposite Subway and Slider Shack) 5) Next to Wine Connection restaurant at the Oasis shopping center on Samakkee Road. Computer Malls in Nonthaburi, Plus Mr. Battery! No need to battle traffic to reach downtown Bangkok’s famous Panthip Plaza on Petchburi Road for tech gadgets, phone and computer supplies. Here in Nonthaburi, we have two alternatives that are just as good. One is IT Square at Laksi Plaza at the intersection of Chaengwattana Road and Viphawaddhi Highway. The other is also called Panthip (sort of a junior Panthip Plaza) opposite the Mall Ngamwongwan on Ngamwongwan Road. My daughter and I recently had to purchase a power bank charger, Samsung replacement battery, iPhone charging wire and plug, and smartphone covers. We found them all at IT Square with no problem. Best part is the Mr. Battery shop on the second floor of IT Square. It stocks a wide selection of camera, computer and phone batteries. It’s the Go-To shop for batteries. Hasn’t failed me yet. Liz Lu
Grapevine Oldie: Airport Limousine & Van With holiday travels coming up, a Grapevine favorite about airport limousine and van service might come in handy. Airport Authority of Thailand (02-134-2323) offers one-way pickup service to and from the airport. It costs more than regular taxis (approximately B1,200 instead of the B400 taxi fare from Nichada to Suvarnabhumi Airport, but the whole family can ride together instead of in separate taxis. Plus, there will be plenty of room for all your luggage. Expressway tolls are also included in the fare, whereas in a taxi you’ll need to dig around for change to pay for the tolls. Liz Lu 27

Let’s Play Ball! BBSA’s Opening Day at ISB Although it wasn’t exactly Spring, November 23 marked a beautiful Opening Day for Bangkok Baseball & Softball Association (BBSA) at ISB’s Reinsch Field. The festivities for this great American pastime were kicked off with opening remarks by Chris Curtis, who introduced the parade of players to enthusiastic parents and spectators. The crowd was also treated to beautiful renditions of the Royal Anthem by Jace Payackapan and the “The Star Spangled Banner” by Lauren Nelson. BBSA Commissioner Matt Hoehn gave some welcoming remarks, thanking the generous sponsors, as well as the many volunteers who make baseball and softball season possible. As Commissioner Hoehn noted, more than 11,000 kids have participated in BBSA since its inception, thanks in large part to ISB’s sharing the use of its extraordinary fields. The special guest speaker for the ceremony was former Major League Baseball player and current Nichada resident Jed Hansen. Jed had some very meaningful words for players, coaches and spectators alike, and he closed with the all-important refrain “Keep your eye on the ball!” Jed also threw out the first softball and baseball pitches to Prairie Yooprasert and Connor Curtis, which were followed by a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” marking the opening of the 2013-14 season. Play ball! Monique Langer

Masters Swimming Joy of Low-Impact Aerobics Ask me a few years ago if I would have called myself a swimmer and the answer would have been an ironclad NO! I saw myself as a runner. Loved the sprints and hurdles as a kid and grew to enjoy the longer distances as I got older. But then as I continued (call it middle age), running became more and more painful. Thus, in order to continue with some type of aerobic exercise, I needed to make a change, so I decided to try swimming. I did not grow up swimming. Yes, I learned how to do freestyle when young (we called it the crawl back then), but I learned to swim in lakes as my small town did not have a real pool. The concept of swimming laps was foreign to me. I discovered Masters Swimming, which according to the U.S. Masters Swimming website, means swimming for adults who are 18 years and older. My first several weeks at Masters Swimming, I was lucky if I could finish half of the workout. I would do a few laps, rest a few laps while I watched the rest of the group go on, then try to swim a few more laps. I have to say that my first experience swimming laps with masters was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. However, the support and encouragement I got from the other masters swimmers was tremendous and kept me coming back for more! After I finally progressed to a point where I was able to finish a workout, I wanted to get faster. Technique counts for so much more in the pool than it does for running! This is where Total Immersion (TI) came to my rescue. TI is a method of swimming developed by Terry Laughlin that really made sense to me. For more on TI, please check out their website at http://www.totalimmersion.net/ and/or contact the only TI certified coach in the area, Bud Rockey, at ISB. If you can swim 50 meters between 40-100 seconds, then our Masters group may be for you! If you are interested in Masters Swimming in the Nichada area, there is a morning group that swims at the Nichada pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 am. They have swimmer-run workouts as their coach has recently moved on to another country. Due to the scheduling and pool availability at ISB, there is no formal scheduled Masters Swimming at the school. However, there is a core group of fitness-minded people that informally meet to swim at both Nichada and ISB pools when schedules and pool availability allow. Contact Kevin Sypolt (ksypolt@gmail.com) if you are interested in joining the morning group, or Wendy Van Bramer at wendyvanbramer@yahoo.com for more details on the afternoon group. We'd love to see you in the pool! Wendy Van Bramer 35

January Coffee Social with White Elephant Gift Exchange To welcome us all back after the holidays we thought we would have a coffee social morning with a bit of fun thrown in. For those of you who haven’t played the White Elephant Gift Exchange game before, it is more about the entertainment than the quality of the gift. The game is played all over the world, but the meaning actually derives from Siam (now Thailand). According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, the term comes from the story that the revered white elephants were gifted in order to ruin the recipient by the cost of its maintenance. Nowadays, the gifts given are typically gifts that have been received by others and have little to no value, or are just too “bad” not to share. Gifts can also be inside jokes with fellow attendees. Participants take turns opening and “stealing” gifts along the way. Feel free to bring a wrapped gift with you if you wish to join in the fun of the White Elephant Gift Exchange game. Please don’t feel you need to spend large amounts of money; just bring an unwanted item from your home or something others would find humorous. You may not end up wanting what you receive, but you will have fun receiving it … and you can always save it for next year’s White Elephant!
Date: Friday, January 24 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Venue: Home of Charlotte Sanders 39/684 Lakepoint If you can, please bring a plate of baked goods or fruit to share. For more information call Sarah Glaze at 081-793-0806.
Planning on attending the social? Please, share your experience! Thani Talk is looking to feature recaps from NNR social attendees. Please see Sarah Glaze at the social if you’d like to share. Thank you!

Recipe Corner: Holiday Baking
Thani Talk ~Dec/Jan 20132013-2014
Holiday Sweets! I love baking, especially at Christmas time. Here are a few recipes that my family looks forward to every year. Be careful! The sugar has not been spared.
Pecan Pie Bars Crust: 3 cups sifted flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 tsp salt Filling: 1 1/2 cups Karo corn syrup 4 eggs, slightly beaten 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 2 1/2 cups chopped pecans or walnuts Prepare crust: Grease bottom and sides of a 15x 10 1-inch baking pan. Be certain sides of baking pan are 1-inch high. In a large bowl with mixer at medium speed, beat flour, sugar, butter, and salt until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; press firmly and evenly into pan. Bake in 350 degree F oven for 20 minutes. Prepare Filling: In a medium bowl, stir corn syrup, sugar then eggs and vanilla until blended. Stir in nuts. Pour over hot crust; spread evenly. Bake in 350 degree F oven for 30 minutes or until filling is firm around the edges and slightly soft in center. Cool in pan on wire rack. Makes 48 bars.
Honey Cookies 4+ cups flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup butter Oil Honey
Mix sugar, vanilla, and softened butter. Add two cups flour to form a soft sticky dough. Continue to add flour and knead gently until dough becomes soft and is no longer sticky. Separate dough into fourths and roll out each section about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 2 inch long strips about 1/4 inch wide. Form strips into circles or knots. Heat enough oil in saucepan to deep fry the dough. Drop each twist into the oil and deep fry for 2-3 minutes. Remove from oil and allow to cool. Store in air tight container until ready to serve. Place several on a plate and pour honey over until covered. Enjoy! Laura Sadowski If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please contact us at nnrnewsletter@yahoo.com. We’d love to hear from you! 41

Neilson Hays Library: Historical Oasis in the Heart of Bangkok Neilson Hays Library 195 Surawong Road, Bangkok Tel. 02-233-1731 Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday Membership is open to all. For more information, visit: www.neilsonhayslibrary.com To subscribe to NHL news, email nhl.communication@gmail.com Much has been written about the supposed demise of libraries – the digital age has struck hard and libraries are apparently being scrapheaped. I can almost hear you saying that you heard there was an English language library in Bangkok. A quaint collection of weary books, you believe, possibly about to go the way of chunky VHS players and rotary dial telephones. What a shame, you think. You couldn’t be more wrong. The Neilson Hays Library, nestled in the heart of Bangkok on Surwong Road, is thriving. Every week Thai and expatriate families arrive to collect their next stack of books. Events for adults and children bring a constant flow of visitors to this priceless community resource. Our galleries expose young, old and in-between to contemporary and classic art forms. Quiet Haven In contrast to the ever-present ‘noise’ of technology and the overwhelming feeling of information overload, it is reassuring to know there is somewhere you can go to enjoy quiet, intellectual pursuits. The Neilson Hays is where you can go and just breathe, relax, and think. On Saturdays, the calm gives way to happy visits by children descending on the library for wonderful stories, crafts, and other activities that are enormously fun and stimulating. During library hours, indulge in the possibilities offered by thousands upon thousands of new and classic novels, beloved children’s books and diverse non-fiction titles. Where you can pick up a real, physical book and almost feel the heart and soul the author has poured into it and the journey that other readers have experienced. History of the Neilson Hays Library The story of the Neilson Hays Library is a remarkable narrative in itself. A love story, a tragic death and a building constructed to remember the love of one’s life are just some of the elements which have shaped this institution. Thirteen resourceful British and American women established the Bangkok Ladies' Library Association in 1869, with the aim of circulating and sharing books — long-awaited luxuries freighted from the other side of the world. It was a time of devastating epidemics and small settlements amongst swamps and klongs. Staffed by volunteers and housed rent-free in personal homes, it was originally only open only one day a week. By 1897, it was open six days a week with a paid librarian. 44

By 1914 it was clear that a dedicated building was required. A plot of land on Surawong Road was purchased. An active Board member at this time was Jennie Neilson Hays. Arriving as a Protestant missionary in 1881, Jennie soon met and married Dr Thomas Heywood Hays, Chief of the Royal Thai Navy Hospital. A mainstay of the organisation for twenty years, Jennie passed away suddenly in 1920, possibly due to cholera. Dr Hays honoured his wife by commissioning a new library to be built in her memory. The result is our elegant neo-classical building; sadly never seen by her. It was opened on 26 June, 1922. The Neilson Hays Library is many things in addition to being a book-lover’s paradise. The library is an architectural revelation, described by the Bangkok Times as “… a grand palace on a small scale”. New art exhibitions are installed every month . A bright garden café pulses with library patrons and local office workers. This community-focused library brings locals and expats together for inspiring and thoughtprovoking events throughout the year. So if you’re excited by the prospect of introducing your family to a world of knowledge and reacquainting yourself with the type of library that may have been a significant part of your childhood, then come and visit us at Neilson Hays. Our staff and volunteers would be delighted to welcome you and show you how our wonderful library is thriving in this modern world. Restaurant Review
Thani Talk ~Dec/Jan 20132013-2014
Restaurant Review: All Six to Twelve Walking into All Six To Twelve is like walking into a chic bistro/airy loft- style brasserie that you could find in London, New York or Paris. It is light and spacious, yet does not lose that cozy intimate feel which is essential for good ambience. Its style is a mix of contemporary urban with traditional overlay. The white painted brick work, solid wooden tables, café style hooped back chairs, fresh flowers and cushions on window seats bring quality, whilst the floor to (high) ceiling windows and urban metallic low slung lights make this a light, trendy place to hang out for a great lunch spot – or for an after work evening chill. Great jazz and old favorites help you make your choice from a very extensive – and very interesting – menu. The tone is Thai, but the ingredient combination is the most ‘fusion’ that I have come across; a true mix of Thai and international cuisine – but with a difference. So, be prepared to take a while to order! Appetizers range from 80 baht to 150 baht. I sampled baked tortilla chips with shrimp and cheese served with tomato jalapeño dip, which was very yummy (140 baht). The five pieces of herbs and lemon fried fish, served with tartar sauce and Italian style coleslaw was a reach for me as I’m not a fish lover, but was the tastiest thing I ate! I loved it (110 baht). Soup and salad lovers will not be disappointed with the selection ranging from 140 to 160 baht. Items include smoked salmon wrap watercress, served with avocado wakame, lettuce and sashimi dressing (140 baht) and mixed lettuce with avocado, mixed cheese, chicken, ham, bacon and thousand island dressing (160 baht). Sandwiches, Burgers & Puff (this was their heading, not mine!) offer all sorts of familiar friends such as comfort food with double ham, chicken and cheese in focaccia, served with potato chips (130 baht); poached ham open sandwich with poached egg, Kochachinken ham, spinach and Béarnaise sauce (100 baht); and chicken green curry puff with cucumber relish (75 baht). Pastas and main dishes include black ink spaghetti with green curry, pea eggplant, apple eggplant, bamboo shoot, capsicum and seafood (110 baht); pizzas, with just about everything added to their All Six to Twelve Delight Pizza (140 baht); and braised pork with sautéed asparagus, bacon, mashed potato and pepper sauce (180 baht). In other words, there is a lot to choose from that will satisfy the slightly adventurous, and as you can see this is a very affordable restaurant! Open from 6 a.m. to midnight - which might indicate where the restaurant got its name - it caters to all appetites in the upscale, leafy Lang Suan Road neighborhood. Available for private functions, this is a very adaptable and very appealing place to spend some time. Corkage is 400 baht if you wish to take your own drink, but their stocked bar should satisfy. Open daily 6 a.m. to midnight, 55 Langsuan Rd, Lumphini ,Tel: 02-250-6799 49
