Letter from NNR’s Vice Chairperson Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach (NNR) Hello there! My name is Sally Elliott, and I have had the great fortune of living in Thailand for the past 13 years!! Graham and I arrived with two daughters in 6th & 8th grade. Now, through university, they are working in Australia and Europe: time definitely flies! We have known a little of the expat life that you are all familiar with, being born in England and living in Scotland, Vietnam, Italy, USA & Thailand for varying lengths of time. Huge blessings of friendships, travel, exposure to cultures and adventure! I’m a biologist by training, but worked in human resources during my working life in the UK. For the past two years, I have had the privilege of wearing two hats within the NNR – that of VP, and Bazaar Chair. Working with such an able and committed group has been fantastic, and I am thrilled to be a part of it! Sally Elliott NNR Vice-Chairperson

NNR Tour

Meet NNR’s Tour Coordinators Pascale Kervyn My nationality is Belgian. This is my sixth year in Bangkok, and my second year as NNR coordinator for tours. I have a senior in college (2015 graduate form ISB) and an 11th grader at ISB. I enjoy this opportunity as NNR tour coordinator to discover the area, and I am happy to receive suggestions and ideas for new tours.

Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach

Maida Muslic-Kovar I’m Bosnian-American, and I’ve been living in Thailand for almost 3 years now. I’ve been a member of the NNR board since last June. We are a Foreign Service family. Before that, both my husband and I worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Prior to Thailand, I lived and worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Indonesia, Guatemala, Japan, South Korea, Costa Rica and the US. Currently I’m working at the US Embassy in Bangkok, as well as volunteering with ISB PTA and NNR. I’m a proud mom to two children: a college freshman (ISB alumnus) and an 11th grader, also at ISB. My interests and hobbies include human rights, politics, traveling, reading, history, arts and culture, foreign languages, music/piano playing and long-distance running. Hope that most of our community members (and especially newcomers) will take advantage of many wonderful NNR tours and trips planned for this year. Looking forward to meeting/seeing you all!

NNR October 11 Tour:

Tattoos, Thai Crafts & Orchid Farm Back by popular demand: HIDDEN TREASURES OF NONTHABURI What do spiritual tattoos, scented soaps and orchids have in common? You can experience them all on the October NNR excursion and they are all in Nonthaburi! Join us for a day trip to a famous wat (temple). At Wat Bang Phra, people receive tattoos from revered monks. Tattooing yantras on the skins has been part of the Khmer and Thai cultures for more than 2,000 years. The wat is a center for mystical tattoos and is also a working, historic Buddhist temple. We will stop at an OTOP (One Tambon One Product) factory and showroom which specializes in lovely scented soaps, essential oils and lotions made from natural coconuts. Our last stop will be an orchid farm where you can see an amazing variety of gorgeous flowers (and take a few home). There will be time to enjoy a (self-pay) coffee and light lunch together. Tribute to King Rama IX

Chakri Dynasty 1782 - Present

The Chakri dynasty is the current ruling royal house in Thailand. The dynasty began in 1782 with the founding of the modern Rattanakosin Era, when the capital of Bangkok was established. King Rama I founded the dynasty and named it Chakri. The Chakri dynasty is represented by emblems including a discus (Chakra) and a trident. Thailand became a constitutional monarchy in 1932. Following the death of King Rama IX (His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej) on Oct. 13, 2016, his son His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X) was proclaimed king on December 1, 2016. Last year, on the first anniversary of King Bhumipol’s passing, October 13th was officially observed as King Bhumibol Adulyadej Memorial Day. This year, since King Bhumibol Adulyadej Memorial Day falls on a Saturday, it will be observed on Monday, October 15.

Cover Story: Groups that Bring Us Together

Groups for Support, Sports and Fun! This super-networked community of ours, with more than 1,500 members in the Facebook group “Expats of Nichada,” is connected not just through school activities, but through scores of sports and other interest groups for adults. After you get the kids settled, it’s time to explore support networks as well as hobby groups for yourself. Thani Talk brings you a starter list of what’s available out there. To mark Breast Cancer Awareness week in October, we kick off this month’s cover story with local breast cancer support groups. From Beyond Boobs, Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group, and Friend to Friend (Thailanguage group), women reach out to offer neighbors emotional support. The Pink Ladies group works with

Breast Cancer Support Groups October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Beyond Boobs: We are a diverse group of women who meet twice a month for coffee. We are at different stages of our breast cancer journeys, but through friendship and understanding we are able to support each other through the various challenges that we are confronted with after a breast cancer diagnosis. Some groups, such as biking, tennis and Ultimate Frisbee, are co-ed. Many are for women, and then there’s the new Nichada Justice League of Dads and Dudes featured in last month’s Thani Talk. Hope this introduction to local interest groups helps you find a wonderful network of friends. Stay active. Stay healthy, everyone! Liz Lu, Editor, Thani Talk

The Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group (BBC) began nearly twenty years ago to help breast cancer patients with accurate and relevant information as well as offering emotional support. The group consists of volunteers including breast cancer survivors. Part of the BBC is also made up of an active fundraising group, the ‘Pink Ladies.’ The Thai speaking group of volunteers and survivors ‘Friend to Friend’ offers emotional support, free bras, bespoke prostheses and wigs. Both groups are based at the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC) which provides the most modern facilities for underprivileged women and organizes breast and cervical screening in the slum communities. The QSCBC Foundation which raises funds for the QSCBC projects. Helped by the ‘Pink Ladies’ group, the Foundation is completing the ‘Pink Park’ hospice and cancer rehabilitation home, which will serve the poorest in society. Cover Story

Panthers Football Club It is Sunday at 4 pm, and some hard working Nichada residents gather to chase a ball up and down a field. Yes, the beautiful game exists, and if you have ever wondered where husbands, wives fathers, mothers, or neighbours disappear to on Sundays, this could be it. The Panthers Football Club kicked off in 2006 thanks to Tim Meisburger who simply wanted to organize casual Sunday soccer for Nichada’s adults. The group consists of ISB faculty and staff, parents, alumni, and assorted others who come as guests. These games remain popular thanks to the players and ISB for providing one of the best fields in Thailand. As well as Sunday, Thursday nights feature visiting teams from around Bangkok. Though there are well over 100 names on the Facebook group, generally there are between 15 - 25 players on any given Sunday depending on the weather and people's work schedules. If we have 22, we'll play full field, otherwise we will play across the width with smaller numbers. New players are welcomed, any skill level, and if nothing else you’ll get a good workout with a good group of people. To get involved, join the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/isbpanthersfc and otherwise just show up (no costs involved for Sunday's, but Thursdays we need to pay for referees). Steve Romary

Ultimate Frisbee on Sundays

This Ultimate Frisbee group that meets on Sundays at ISB was started at least 10 years ago with a Chevron employee named Ming Zhao taking the lead to contact people and set up the fields at ISB each week. It's always 12

been open to the ISB community but was mostly men in the beginning. After Chevron's reorganization, attendance fizzled (and Ming moved away with his cones and discs). In 2016 the games restarted with teenagers and friends joining. We communicate over a Line group and we have 18 active members from four continents. People show up as their schedules (and the weather) allow. We consistently get over 10 folks to come, enough for two teams So, if you feel like getting a little exercise on a Sunday afternoon, consider joining us for an Ultimate Frisbee game at 4:30 pm at the track at ISB. We divide into teams and play a game that’s easy to pick up, even if you’ve never played. Bring your teens & your spouse and be ready to have some fun. Ultimate Frisbee is fun for everyone and a bit addicting. To be added to the Line group, contact: nrmannikko@gmail.com.

Pub Trivia Quiz Nights

The Nichada Pub Trivia Quiz has been running in a variety of incarnations and locations around Nichada for over 8 years. When long standing quiz master Mike Hall left Thailand several years ago the quiz became community run with regular teams and individuals taking turns at writing and delivering the quiz. The quiz is normally made up of six 10-point general knowledge rounds, which include traditional pub quiz favorites such as music, sport, art and movies. However, having a variety of quizmasters means we get some more interesting rounds as well. Teams are made up of 4 people, but there are often pairs or singles that turn up on the night and makeup teams. Quiz nights are held around every second Thursday night at Joe’s Cafe, which is found just outside the Seechaitong gate on the way to Central; they have a Facebook page

with details on how to get there. Joe’s does great, cheap Thai food and drinks in a nice environment. The quiz starts at 8 pm and normally finishes up at 10:30 pm. A full list of dates is found below for the remaining quizzes this year. We also post the upcoming events on the 'Expats of Nichada' Facebook page. Of course anyone is most welcome to attend and the vibe is more about a social night out than competition, so get together some friends and come along for a fun, low key night out. Upcoming Quiz nights are on the following Thursdays: Oct. 4, Nov. 1, 22, Dec. 6, Jan. 10. If you want further information please contact Richard Harvey (richardh@isb.ac.th) Richard Harvey

Volleyball Nights for Spikers We are a group of ISB parents, teachers, staff and invited friends playing volleyball every Monday from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm in Rajendra at ISB. The adult volleyball group was established many years ago, way earlier than I first joined three years back. Membership is free; you can come and go, play one set or several. The skill level of players is intermediate to advanced. If you have played volleyball previously and would like to experience again the thrill of great spikes, serves and digs, come join us! New players are always welcome! Email mark.relova@eastwestseed.com October 2018

Masters Swimming

I am not absolutely sure when Masters Swimming began, but it was probably around 2006. Previously the sessions were coached by Andy Myers. After he left ISB, our group is self coaching. The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:20 am at the Nichada pool. The workouts are very flexible. Usually someone will prepare an approximate 2,000-meter swim plan, but everyone just swims what they are able. There is no cost to participate. The only cost is equipment. We often use swim workout fins and pool buoys, so most members purchase these. I am guessing there are about 10 people who show up each day. We have a Facebook page that people can join - https:// www.facebook.com/groups/513346442035109/ The best part of Masters Swimming is we have coffee, etc. at Starbucks after our workout. Great time to catch up. For more information, please contact Kerstin Wild at: kerstin.bangkok@gmail.com. Kevin Sypolt

Tennis: For Every Level In Nichada Thani we have different tennis groups with different levels of playing. Some groups play on the Nichada tennis courts, others at First Serve (just outside the Seechaitong gate) and still others at ISB. The groups (8 players each) are formed already, but they are always in need of substitutes. Starting as a substitute is the way to get into a group. Tuesday: Beginner/Intermediate from 8 - 10 am. Contact person: Mary Ann Banker: 095-846-1801. Nichada courts or at First Serve. Thursday: Intermediate from 7.30 – 9 am. Contact 14

It is a fun group of players and the level varies from intermediate to advanced. Mostly they play at ISB during the week after 6 pm and during the weekend sometimes at 6 am or late afternoon. If there’s any other information you may need, please give me a call (087-065-1435). It would be great to welcome new players to our tennis community. Moms RUN This Town/ She Runs This Town

“Moms RUN This Town/She Runs This Town” or MRTT/SRTT, is a FREE international running/walking group for women that was started by a mom in the USA. We now have over 800 chapters globally with over 22,000 members connected through social media When I arrived in Nichada Thani, there were people running and walking at literally all hours of the day. Looking back, I must have been slightly crazy because I started our Bangkok/Nichada MRTT/SRTT chapter just one month after moving here in August 2016! We now have 175+ members in the Nichada Thani and October 2018

downtown Bangkok area. The women in this group come from all different stages of running or walking…beginner, prior runner and getting back into it, marathoners, and walkers. To be a member of “Moms Run This Town/She Runs This Town”, you just have to be a woman with a positive attitude and be willing to encourage other women to do things they’ve never dreamed they could do. One of our newer members who has been here a year and recently joined our chapter of MRTT/SRTT said to me, “This group is so much more than a running group!” It provides a place of companionship and support when almost all of us are here with none. It’s a place where we have a common interest and can find new friends and something to belong to right away. If this sounds like a group you’d like to join, look for us on Facebook at Bangok/Nichada Moms RUN This Town-She RUNS This Town, https://www.facebook. com/groups/BangkokMRTT/.

Bollywood Belles of Bangkok

"Do you want to try a Bollywood Dance class?", asked a friend, many years ago when I arrived in India as an expat. It was our first overseas posting. "Not sure what that is," I said, "but sure, I love ANY dancing; I'll give it a try". I have not looked back since that life-changing day. Bollywood Dance - and all the culture, nuances, and color that revolve around this dance form - has become my passion, my love. So I founded the fabulous Bollywood Belles of Bangkok toward the end of 2011, when I arrived in Nichada, to share this joy. In the expat community in which we live, where people come and go, the group is ever-changing. Now going on our 8th year, we are about 30 ladies with a truly amazing inter-cultural background. Countries from all continents are represented in the Belles - Bollywood Dance is truly universal. Bollywood Belles have performed at community events such as the International Food Fair and PTA events welcoming newcomers. And though it is the love of the dance which binds us together, it is also a delightful social group - we love to hang out together, celebrate together, party together. And we love to bring our dancing to the stage - especially performing for charity related events. So‌ Aaja Nachle! (Let's Dance!)

Classes are held at the Nichada Studio above Starbucks. Cost is 400 baht per week (come as many times as you like) Beginners classes: Wednesdays 11-12 am OR Wednesdays 4-5 pm Mixed level classes: Tuesdays 5-6 pm OR Wednesdays 5-6 pm OR Thursdays 9:30-10:30 am OR Fridays 9:30-10:30 am For details and information, contact Irit at: iritmike@gmail.com (Tel: 0860044840)

New Immigration Office in Nonthaburi A new Immigration Office has opened in Bangkruai District for foreigners who live in Nonthaburi province. We went there one morning, and it was fairly easy for us to reach the place. Coming from the main road (Soi Ruammit) driving to the narrow soi (alley), it might take about another 400-500 meter drive to reach their premises. As we approached, I noticed a part of the road was still under construction. Immigration officers were friendly, as usual. There were new young faces added to the team. Going in the mornings gives you the best chance of catching good vibes from them. They're all jolly happy at their new work place. Address of Nonthaburi Immigration Office: 954 Moo 1 Soi Ruam Mit, Nakhon In Road, Bangkhanun, Amphur Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi. The Walk: Great Mall Near Immigration Office

While at immigration, if you realise that you forgot your photos, or if you need to update your passbook, or withdraw cash, head to the The Walk. It's only five minutes away and a great little mall. The Walk has lots of restaurants, cafes, pastry shops, an Index Living store, neat little BigC, Lemon Farm, pharmacies, and all the random pop up shops that keep things a bit interesting in the land of malls! It is all contained on two floors and brand new and totally uncrowded on a weekday. Selma Benmoussa 20

Rex Pharmacy Offers Generics and Customer Service Rex Pharmacy is amazing. It is located above Villa supermarket in Nichada. Khun Lek has time and again helped us obtain local generics of expensive brands from overseas or given really good advice when a trip to the doctor was not possible. She is a great listener and also happy to share knowledge about traditional herbs and remedies if you are curious. Finally, there are lots of other random things she can order. She follows the trends, and if you kids have started a slime factory, she will have what they need in stock! Lek’s assistant is starting her maternity leave on October 15. She has been a familiar face for many and we wish her well! Selma Benmoussa

Yusuf Kitchen: Great Place for Muslim Food This is a very good local restaurant: Yusuf Kitchen. They serve Muslim/Thai food. It's at the intersection/corner of the Samakkee by-pass road and Soi Prasert Issaram. They're famous for Khao Mok Kai (curried rice baked with chicken) I eat there one to three times per week. They don't really have a menu with pictures, and it's all in Thai. However, I had the menu translated into English, so maybe they still have it. I usually get the Soup Kai (chicken soup) and Biryani Rice, but everything I've tried has been good: noodle soups, satay, curries etc. The Soup Kai, that I mentioned, is a salty, sour, spicy broth with some veggies and two pieces of thigh meat. For some foreigners, the place might appear to be a bit daunting in a culinary and aesthetic way. But hey, break out of your comfort zone and try it. Hours are 8:30 am to 3 pm. Yusuf Kitchen is closed on Mondays. Mark Grygiel October 2018

Travel: Shanghai Shanghai Bound: Top 10 Things To Do in China’s City of the Future

Yangtze River Cruises

If you’re like me, you are in full October holiday planning mode. If you’re also like me, you are finding it to be a bit of a challenge. I mean, we almost have too many options of amazing places to visit here in Asia. Having lived in Shanghai, China, for three years I can say if you are considering a trip there, October is the best time to go. The weather is cool, the air quality is good, and the monsoon season is coming to an end. In addition, with a four-hour direct flight, getting to Shanghai is quick and easy. Have I convinced you yet? If so, then let’s get to the fun part. Things to do in Shanghai. Oh, the list is endless. It is such a vibrant city full of both old and new. That being said, your biggest challenge may be to narrow down all the possibilities. To help, I’ve comprised a list of the 10 best things to do in Shanghai. 1. Walk The Bund Shanghai is divided into two sides by the Huangpu River. The new side (Pudong), and the old side (Puxi). The Bund is on the Puxi side and offers most of the city’s history and cultural opportunities as well as stunning views of the iconic Shanghai skyline. 2. Take a day in Lujiazui Get a bird’s-eye view of the city from atop the Shanghai Tower, the world’s second tallest building, shop at Super Brand Mall or visit the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium.

3. Stroll through Yuyuan Gardens A true gem within a bustling city, Yuyuan Garden is a beautiful representation of Chinese architecture and garden design. Just a note, it gets very busy so try to visit early in the day. 4. Shop at a fake market Our favorite was in the Science and Technology Building. It had everything from Coach purses to Converse. We found something new each time we went. 5. Take a tour Sometimes the best way to experience a city is on 28

Burin family: 2016 foot, or by bike. I highly recommend an Unfood Food Tour or if you are feeling brave, a Culture Shock bike tour. They are both wonderful companies and give you a lot for your money. 6. Enjoy a Saturday at Fuxing Park One of our favorite things to do in Shanghai. Locals come out on the weekends to socialize, play mahjong, dance, sing, you name it. It’s a great way to see how the Shanghainese community comes together.

7. Meander through the alleyways of Tianzifang Here you will find dozens of cute and magical little shops at every corner. There’s truly something for everyone, no matter your age. 8. Meet Mickey at Shanghai Disneyland Honestly, who wouldn’t want to spend a day at Disneyland? This park is small enough to do in one day October 2018

Burin family : 2018 and can be easily accessed via the Metro. 9. Eat! I love food, and Shanghai is a food lover’s paradise. For food with a view, go to Pop on The Bund, Fellas Terrace, or Sunday brunch at the W Hotel. Grab a Thai Zeed margarita at Lost Heaven. And most importantly, make sure you try jianbing, fried dumplings, and xiaolongbao! 10. Drink! Shanghai is home to countless outstanding bars and speakeasies. If you can, visit a rooftop bar about 30 minutes before sunset so you can see the city during the day and the lights at night. Flair and Char Bar both offer incredible views of the city. We truly enjoyed our three years of sightseeing, touring, eating and drinking our way through Shanghai. The city is vibrant and everchanging, with so much to see and do. It’s a fantastic representation of both China of the past and of the future. With October being the perfect time to visit, go ahead and book your trip. There are 13 flights a day between Bangkok and Shanghai. We have used Shanghai Airlines which is nothing special but gets you there. Honestly, with it being such a short flight (4.5 hours), I would probably just go with the cheapest direct flight option. So, hop on that plane and get ready to experience all this amazing city has to offer. For more tips and information on Shanghai, please visit my blog at: www.bunchabroad.com. Laurie Burin

Travel: Tips for Shanghai

Quick Tips for a Successful Shanghai Trip China is a country steeped in history. It’s doors were closed to outsiders for generations. Today foreigners are welcome, but many places have not yet fully adopted western accommodations and conveniences. That being said, Shanghai is considered the “China of the future” making it much easier for tourists to explore than other parts of the country. Here are some important tips when visiting Shanghai. • Wattage: 220V • Currency: Yuan Renminbi-RMB (¥) • Tipping is not common practice. • Purchase a Chinese SIM card for your cellphone at the airport. Major telecom companies include China Unicom and China Mobile. This will provide you with a pay-as-you-go plan that should easily last the duration of your stay. But keep in mind, these plans will not allow you to call internationally. I recommend downloading the WeChat app which is China’s main form of communication (just as Line is the goto app here in Thailand and WhatsApp is the popular one in the US and other countries). WeChat is amazing! It will allow you to send text messages as well as voice or video call anywhere in the world. I love it and still use it here in Bangkok to stay in touch with people back home. • Before you travel, download a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your phone or computer to bypass the firewall. China is strict on what is allowed via the internet. Sites like Facebook, Google, and Pandora are banned so if you can’t live without them during your visit, you’ll need a VPN. There are many good ones on the market and some offer a free 7-day trial. Some VPNs work better than others. My advice would be to read reviews in the app store and try one with a 7-day trail offer. I am currently using VPN 360 which has been pretty reliable (yes, I still use it here in Bangkok because I need it for Pandora Music and Hulu since my accounts were created in the U.S.). • Taxis, Didis (Chinese version of Grab and Uber) and the Metro, are common forms of transportation. If taking a taxi, have your address available in Chinese as many drivers do not speak English. You can also rent MoBikes, but will need to download the app and set up an account in advance. When setting it up on your phone, you’ll be asked to link a credit card to your account (much like Didi, no money is exchanged). When you are ready to rent a bike, just scan its barcode through your app and off you go! 30 Than

However, I personally would use extreme caution riding a bike around busy Shanghai where bikes do not have the right of way. That being said, I never personally rented one and would have opted for the Metro or a taxi instead. • Most markets and small vendors only accept cash. Make sure you always have plenty on hand. You can withdraw money from ATM’s or exchange money in many locations throughout the city. Larger establishments commonly accept international credit cards. Visa is the most popular. • Like Bangkok, pedestrians do not have the right of way in Shanghai. • Most street food is not safe to eat. However, certain foods that are thoroughly cooked should be fine (ie. steamed dumplings, jianbing -- Chinese panfried pancakes -- etc.). • Tap water is not safe to drink, but brushing teeth and showering with it are fine. • You’ll eventually have to use a squatty potty. There is no getting around it, especially in older establishments. Alway carry tissues and hand sanitizer, as toilet paper and soap are generally not provided. • At times the air quality can be bad. Consider purchasing face masks before your trip. However, if you forget, they can be purchased at many convenience stores in the city. Halloween Night Nichada-style!!!

While Halloween is a distinctly American holiday, the most fun I have had on Halloween has been in various cities in Asia, where it is celebrated in some enclaves with gusto. Nichada is no exception, from very young to old, everyone in the family can join in on the fun. Here are some tips to get ready!!! Costumes: A great place to start is the White Elephant Shop! The annual Halloween Sale will be held in Nichada on Wednesday, October 3 from 12 pm to 4 pm at 761 Veranda; and at ISB on Thursday, October 4 (during parent teacher conferences) from 8 am to 2 pm near the bookstore. There will be costumes of all kinds and all sizes along with Halloween decor and home accessories, Additional places to look for costumes are Daiso at Central or the various Toys R Us stores around Bangkok. Additionally, there are many wonderful and affordable seamstresses right outside Nichada. If there is a costume that you have always wanted to have, now is the time to get it made! Check out UnofficialNichada.com for seamstress listings and bring in those Pinterest printouts. Candy: Nichada will send out a map of the neighborhoods and houses that are welcoming trick or treaters that evening. If you want to join in on the fun, you'd better be prepared! Bulk candy can be bought at October 2018

Makro; Villa and Tops have a few options too. Amazon has a few random selections- butter mints anyone? I like to buy candy in bigger bags from IHerb or British Superstore but it can get a bit spendy. To be healthier and more inclusive of children who have allergies, consider fun small items like fake tattoos, stickers or balls; both Makro and Daiso offer fun and affordable options. If you are not giving out candy but plan to be in on the fun, consider making a donation of cash, candy or small toys to a friend or neighbor to help offset what is an expensive evening. The Big Night: Nichada will be hosting their spooky Haunted House again this year at Nichada Plaza, near Villa Market. (See details in Nichada’s ad on page 32). Soft Scream (for kiddos) is from 2:30 pm to 5 pm. Hard Scream for older children is from 5 to 8 pm. Tickets are 250 THB for kids over 100 cm tall. It’s free if you are under 100 cm.. If you are a horror film fan you know that Thai horror films are the best (and scariest) in the world, so I am sure it is spine-tingling! There will also be food, face painting, music and fun! Trick or treating: Walk if you can to avoid golf cart traffic and bring a flashlight. Keep a lookout on the Facebook page for trick or treat start times but for the littles it generally starts at 5pm. Enjoy a spectacularly spooky Nichada Halloween and I will see you there!

Highlights: NNR September Tour National Museum Bangkok

On September 14th, NNR hosted a tour to the National Museum Bangkok which exhibits Thai art and history. The museum compound sits on a former royal residence known as Wang Na (Front palace). The museum was constructed in 1782 during the same period as the Grand Palace which is situated close by. Our first stop was to the Buddhaisawan Chapel which showcases the reknowned Phra Buddha Sihing image as well as incredible murals depicting scenes of the life of Buddha. One of the highlights for me was visiting the Cremation Chariot Hall which houses various Thai royal funeral chariots used for royal cremation ceremonies. I highly recommend this tour. Not only did it enhance my understanding of Buddhism, but it also has increased my appreciation of the history, culture and the people of Thailand. Natalie Wills Free guided tours Wednesdays & Thursdays: Offered by National Museum Volunteers, free guided tours in English, French, German and Japanese are available every Wednesday and Thursday, beginning at 9:30 am. Meet at the museum ticket office. Scheduled tours are free, but please pay 200 THB for museum entrance. Oct 5, 2018 : Annual Reception of National Museum Volunteers (NMV). Event will be held at the Anantara Siam Hotel Bangkok, 9am - noon. Learn about the NMV, its lecture programs, and how to become a museum volunteer. 36

PEOPLE

Meet Khun Jum of 4Legs Pet Shop Best ‘Bae’ to Nichada’s Four-Leggeds Anyone who can make my special needs soi dog Euro look like a legit, fullbreed black lab has some serious skills with the clippers. When I took the old boy, a rescue who has been with us for nine months, to 4Legs Pet Shop & Grooming owner Khun Jum for what was almost certainly his first salon experience, he looked a little like a bedraggled chow mix having a particularly unfortunate hair day. And now he’s the bougie king of Casa, so shiny and handsomely shorn that he’s been rendered nearly unrecognizable. But while Khun Jum, as she is known— her full name is Mananchan Pholoi— most certainly earned my business that day, she’d already secured my deep and abiding respect for her sense of community and service. We met in July, on the day Nichada helped sponsor a sterilization day for street animals living in and around our neighborhood. She took time away from her small business, located just beyond the stage area in Secret Garden, to join a group of volunteers who helped transport 32 animals to and from the surgical site. Shortly thereafter, she volunteered to help keep a street dog we intended to capture and spay while the dog recovered. That particular pooch—the mother of four puppies who were adopted by several Nichada families— unfortunately eluded us, but when another was in need, Jum offered her shop, her expertise, and her time to foster the dog. “Bae, a former soi dog, needed special care for a skin condition while he awaits a forever home,” says Scott Roman, who heads customer relations for Nichada. “I wasn’t surprised that Khun Jum stepped forward and offered to provide treatment and housing for free until something more permanent could be arranged. She has been providing service to Nichada Thani pet owners for almost 20 years, and her love of dogs is clearly obvious to all those who know her. We are lucky to have her and 4Legs in Nichada.” Bae—short for Beethoven—was suffering from a non-contagious fungal condition that resulted in hair loss, red skin, and lots of itchy patches, especially on 40

his back. Dr. Sayan has been treating the fungus with oral medication, and Khun Jum and her assistant Khun Chia have faithfully given him medicated baths twice weekly, kept him indoors with air conditioning, and provided him lots of good nutrition and attention. For about two months now, he has been living at 4Legs, where volunteers go to walk him several times a day, and during that time his hair has grown back in, and his skin is now normal. Jum routinely takes Bae home on the weekends or walks him around the lake on her only day off. She has given him what no one so far has been willing or able to: a place to call home, at least temporarily. “It’s my pleasure to take care of Bae,” she says. “I will take care of Bae until you find the right home for him. Bae is always welcome to stay with me.” 4Legs offers a full range of grooming services, including bathing, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and haircuts. And the shop is fully stocked with pet care October 2018 i Ta l k

items, including bedding, food, cat litter, flea and tick treatment, and treats, among other offerings. Khun Jum says she is considering adding free pet food delivery to her shop offerings and asks anyone interested to let her know what kind of pet food they use and whether they would like the service. She is reachable via Line (jum4legs) or by email at jum_angie@hotmail.com. Please email Liz Garrigan at lizgarrigan@gmail.com if you are interested in fostering, adopting, or helping financially with the care of Bae. Liz Garrigan

Before and After: What a difference love makes! Before: (Above) Rescued dog “Bae (short for Beethoven) suffered from hair loss and red rashes. After: (Right) With medical treatment and TLC from volunteers in the community, and a temporary home offered by Khun Jum of 4Legs Pet Shop, Bae now sports a thick coat of fur.

NNR Hosts Teachers on Tour of Local Charities

Among the things I learned during ISB’s Sept. 20 professional learning day: Matt Enders may be a gentle soul and a musical genius, but you probably wouldn’t want to get between him and a label maker. And Ken Hansberry may be best known for his social studies savvy, but the man has mad broom skills. What else? David Crimi is the tough New York Italian keeping fourth graders in line, but he’s also got a green thumb and is a stickler for the “rule of threes.” Finally, Cyril Plantecoste is more than just the exotic, ponytailed French teacher from Avignon. He has a knack for l’organisation.

I was honored to collaborate with these teachers as part of a service project organizing spaces and decluttering at SaiLom Project, which works with 10 to 20 physically and intellectually disabled boys and young men in developing life skills. Ours was one of several service activities at local charities that Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach (NNR) supports, in which about 20 teachers participated. NNR board member Ginny Condra led one team to the Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities (CCD), a Thai NGO that works with disabled children from both government homes as well as from the community, where the teachers ran a sports day for the kids. NNR’s Imogen Lee took another group on a visit to I-Care’s home at Baan Kredtrakan, a secure governmentrun rehabilitation facility for girls aged 13 to 18 who have been victims of human trafficking and other forms of abuse. There, they ran a pancake cooking class for about 15 residents in the home’s teaching kitchen. Another group toured several charities with NNR Chair Henrietta Bullinger. As parents of ISB high school students know well, ISB takes volunteerism very seriously, requiring students to perform service hours as part of the school’s rigorous curriculum. Which is why Elizabeth Rossini and Bronwyn Weale, from ISB's Learning Design Center, build service opportunities into professional learning days. “ISB is so grateful to partner with NNR on various projects,” Rossini says. “The support NNR provides for our September professional learning day helps our teachers develop service learning options for our students, engage in service for themselves, and better understand our local community. This directly supports the ISB vision of ‘Enriching communities through the intellectual, humanitarian, and creative thoughts and actions of our learners.’ This partnership is only beginning, and we are excited to see it expand.” Liz Garrigan

Restaurant Review

Truffle Pizza! Oh Yeah, You Heard it Right. At Chef Thanom delivered hot, the truffle aroma was so irresistible. The crust was very thin and almost crunchy. A hungry adult can easily finish a large pan by himself or herself. Just the pizza alone made it all worth the trip! Their other famous dishes include lamb chops, served with Thai style sauce. Delicious! Even to a person who’s not a fan of lamb like me. Chef Thanom is also known for his Spaghetti Nero or squid-ink pasta. Not my cup of tea, so I didn’t try. Other must try dishes are rocket salad, foie gras, baked spinach, mussels with arrabiata sauce and spaghetti carbonara. The prices are mid-range. Their service is good and there’s no 10% service charge. Wines are available by the bottle only.

I heard about the restaurant “Chef Thanom” by accident. My family and I were invited to a party at a friend’s place. The menu was Mu Kra Ta or Thai BBQ grilled pork, other assorted meats, and vegetables delivered to the door (along with the grill pan equipped with charcoal, and soup). While the Mu Kra Ta was delicious, our friend was concerned that my (Farang) kids wouldn’t enjoy the food, so they also ordered truffle pizza from Chef Thanom. Truffle Pizza! Even though we arrived late (Bangkok traffic at its finest) and the pizza was cold, it was still quite delicious (for a cold pizza standard). Needless to say, one pan was not enough for my hungry kids. In the end, the kids got to enjoy Thai style Mu Kra Ta as well. My kids’ rave reviews about the truffle pizza piqued my curiosity about the restaurant and I asked my friend about it. I was told the restaurant was called Chef Thanom and that it’s a branch from the famous original Chef Thanom downtown. This branch had just opened and is located not far from our area. One day during our summer break, my needy kids and my curiosity took us to the restaurant Chef Thanom (later renamed Ratthaporn Italian) on Prachachuen Road, only a 15-20 minute drive from Nichada. The restaurant’s ambience is kept casual, simple and bright, just like the original one downtown. The menu offerings are also almost exactly the same. Of course, we ordered truffle pizza, two pans! When it was October 2018

The only drawback to this place is the parking. Parking is located in the basement of the building but access is a bit difficult and availability is limited. Do not despair. Line Man delivers dishes from this restaurant straight to your door. I tried it! Just pop the pizza in the oven for a few minutes and it’s good as new. The restaurant is located in the same building as Silicon Craft Technology Co., Ltd. A search for that company would yield the Chef Thanom restaurant location you want. Otherwise, if you search Chef Thanom alone, Google map would take you downtown.
