Join us for the May 24 Mini Bazaar This is the time of year when our expat community has to say goodbye to so many who have contributed so much, through their involvement at school, church, work, or local charities. So inside this month’s pages, readers will find that we have featured some of these wonderful personalities. Before everyone leaves for the summer, NNR would also like to thank Nichada Thani for its generosity over the course of the year, especially for its sponsorship of our annual Bazaar (please put Nov. 9 on your calendar!) and of the upcoming May 24 Mini Bazaar, which will be from 10 am to 2 pm at 761 Veranda. We hope to see you there for special eats and wonderful vendors! Liz Garrigan, NNR Chairperson

Floral Arts Workshop: May 10
There is a rich flower arrangement tradition in Thailand. Indeed the floral art epitomizes the glorious intersection of beauty and nature. Once again this year, we are able to offer this unique workshop thanks to the unfailing kindness of Khun Pichada of Asian Tigers, who organizes and sponsors the event. This year we are happy to invite you on Friday, May 10 from 9 am to 12 noon, to this wonderful workshop. Participants will learn how to create garlands and will learn about the rich history and symbolism of flower arrangements in Thailand. This way, we will gain insight into the rich culture in which we are fortunate to live. You will, of course, be able to take your beautiful work home with you. Maida Muslic-Kovar and Pascale Kervyn NNR Tour Coordinators When: Friday, May 10 9 am to 12 noon Where: The home of Birgit Sund 39/165 Natakorn Park Cost: 300 baht To sign up please send an email to: nnrtour@gmail.com The tour is limited to 14 participants.

Coronation:
Coronation of King Rama X: May 4-6
On May 4th, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun (King Rama X) will be crowned the tenth monarch of Thailand’s Chakri dynasty, founded in 1782. To mark the historic occasion, the kingdom will celebrate with official events throughout the May 4-6 weekend, including the coronation on May 4th, and a royal procession near the Sanam Luang area to greet the people on May 5th. The coronation of King Rama X comes two years and seven months after the passing of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX), the longest reigning Thai monarch. King Vajiralongkorn, 66, is one of four children born to King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. He is their only son. At the age of 20, he was named the Crown Prince by his father. This year during the Songkran holiday in April, you may have noticed that yellow shirts and other yellow attire were being sold alongside flowery and colorful Songkran shirts, and that a lot of Thais were wearing yellow. That was part of the lead up to the coronation. Both King Rama IX and Rama X were born on a Monday, and according to Thai tradition, the color for Monday is yellow. Therefore, Thais are wearing yellow as a gesture of respect for the monarchs. 6
If you would like to brave the heat to see the May 5th post-coronation procession in person, check out the map on page 7. Please note that the final route may be slightly different. Given that the previous coronation in Thailand was 69 years ago, when King Bhumibol was crowned in 1950, the coronation of King Vajiralongkorn is truly a historic event not to be missed. We wish King Rama X and the entire kingdom a prosperous and peaceful future. Annual Farewell Edition Each May, Thani Talk brings you the annual farewell edition in which we feature good-bye messages from neighbors who are leaving Thailand. It only represents a sample of the many who are getting ready to depart. This year, it seems more neighbors than usual are packing up to move back home or to their next posting. The Facebook group Nichada Expats Yard Sale has been buzzing with “For Sale” posts as people prepare for their departures. As you can see from the 11 farewell messages on the following pages, our community is extremely diverse and
international. Thani Talk readers hail from all over the world, and 9 nationalities are represented in this farewell edition. At ISB, students come from 52 nations. Our community’s diversity is our strength. We share our cultures, make friends and explore Thailand together. We create memories and friendships that will last us a lifetime. To all of our neighbors who are moving on to new beginnings elsewhere, we wish you the very best. Liz Lu, Editor

Hometown: Ashburn, Virginia Other postings: None Organization that brought you to Thailand: U.S. Embassy Number of years in Thailand: 4 years Number of children: 3 - ages 3, 8 and 10 Moving to what city and country: Lusaka, Zambia Plans: We look forward to experience safari and outdoor life in Zambia, Africa. Also expect to have a vegetable garden and chicken coop at home! Memories: I had my third child Daniel in Thailand and now he turns 3 years old. It was just precious time for my family to live in Thailand. Hope he will remember it too. I loved to learn how to cook Thai food from my friends and also enjoyed introducing Korean food to them. They like to eat Kimchi! Joining Bible Study Fellowship at Chaengwattana Community Church has been a great opportunity for me to nourish my soul. Studying bible and sharing my thoughts in the group made me feel connected. Advice for newcomers: Make an effort to learn Thai even after you can count numbers in Thai! Nationality: New Zealand Hometown: Napier, Hawkes Bay Other postings: We have previously lived in London and Doha. Organization that brought you to Thailand: International School Bangkok Number of years in Thailand: 8 Number of children: Sam, 7 and Noah, 5 Moving to what city and country: A small town called Geraldine in Southern Canterbury, New Zealand. Plans: I will be working as an Assistant Principal at Geraldine High School. Memories: Obviously the birth of our two boys here in Bangkok was very memorable. We arrived in Bangkok during the 2011 floods, Hannah was pregnant and the flood threatening to cut off Nichada was a memorable time. Through work I have had the opportunity to go on some amazing GCW trips throughout Thailand and the wider region. However, our most valuable memories are of the friends we have made and the experiences we have shared with them. Thailand has been an amazing place to raise our two boys, and we will miss so many things about it but are also excited to experience life in NZ and introduce the boys to their country. Advice for newcomers: Take advantage of the front gate community, I recommend Layla’s BBQ chicken, Yellow Noodles at the corner stand, Great Massage and May 2019
the Home Fries at New York Diner. If you have a helper then invest time and effort to bring them into your family. Over the past 5 years, P’ Nut has helped us raise our boys, navigate Thailand customs and cultures as well as becoming a lifelong family member. She has enriched our experience here more than anything else.

Memories of Nichada Days: Organizing ESL classes, working on Unofficial Nichada, teaching people to sew and organizing sales of weighted blankets to employ local refugees all gave me so much joy. SO many adventures with Nichada friends outside the bubble with memories I'll treasure forever—trying Bungee Dance for the first time, river taxi-ing, trying new food and every kind of coffee Thailand has to offer. Advice for newcomers: Put energy into making friends early! Don't wait to be invited to do something. Invite others to join you and get adventuring. SO much to do here, and you're bound to trip over various Thai-isms, but it's so worth the effort! Susan Yates

Memories: When I moved to Nichada Thani, it was one of the hardest times of my life. As my husband moved to Hanoi, Vietnam, and my first son moved to Japan in the summer 2017, my life had a big change. But moving to Nichada Thani from downtown Bangkok made my day! I joined some groups such as Pathum Thani Jakayans (Monday cycling), Zumba, Latin Dance, Adult Education classes, a handcraft club, and worked as a Morning Japanese volunteer.

Cover Story With the help of many cheerful and generous group leaders, I was highly motivated to live happily every day. My life is now in full bloom just like the golden shower trees. I had such a great adventure here in Nichada Thani and sincerely thank all of those whom I met. Advice: Go outside and enjoy new encounters, even if you are not a confident English speaker (particularly Japanese friends!). Smile and say hi to your neighbors while taking a walk. You don’t have to be perfect in English. Just enjoy a chat with them. Join groups and sign up for an event. If you are invited for a cup of coffee, just take the offer and cherish the time. Don’t be shy and never wait until you are fully confident in English. Yufuko Tanaka With thanks to Mikiko Mizusawa for translation
Home to Amsterdam; Ready to Explore Europe Memories: So many, I don’t know where to start. Most dearly, all the friends we met. And of course many unforgettable memories of all our travels in the region. My favorite travels: our road trips in Isaan and the North of Thailand, the trips to ‘our’ little paradise, Koh Phayam, and our boat trip through the archipelago of Southern Myanmar. But what may stick with me the longest, is the way I have seen my kids grow so immensely in the past four years, as they participated in many different sports, theater, music activities and made friends with children from all over the world. For that, I will be forever grateful to ISB and this community. Advice to newcomers: Just dive in! Don’t wait to get involved. Volunteer work makes you settle in fast, as you will feel useful and meet many new friends. It will leave you enough time to enjoy the beauty of Thailand. Lizette van Bergen

Zanook Wake and Aqua Park A refreshing adventure awaits at Zanook Wake and Aqua Park in the Bang Bon district of Bangkok for families and groups of friends looking to cool off during the summer months in Bangkok. This cable-guided wake park has been open for three years and hosts a range of activities for kids and adults of all ages and skill levels (would recommend solid swimming ability!) Bangkok. com reviewed the park and noted the “reassuringly modern and high quality equipment” which is always good to hear! There’s a restaurant and coffee shop on site with a nice deck for those that want to relax and watch the action. There are trampolines for kids to enjoy and a Muay Thai gym for lessons or to get in a workout. On the lake, beginners can learn how to kneeboard, wakeboard or ski with a personal coach. A 30-minute lesson as part of a two hour package costs 750 baht. Those who have enjoyed the sport before can practice their skills and learn new tricks on the ramps of various sizes around the lake. Pricing varies with weekend and weekday rates, package deals, day and half day passes. It’s around 600 baht for four hours of wakeboarding but do check to confirm. Stand up paddles boards are also available to enjoy out on the lake. A big draw at the lake is the Zanook Aqua Park, a large inflatable aqua park adventure course occupying the middle of the lake. Climb, crawl, slide, jump, and splash your way around the course for a ton of fun. Life jackets required! Adults pay 300 baht and children pay 200 baht for access to Zanook Aqua Park. Zanook is a great place for a day trip or half-day outing for families and for groups. Khun Ann said they have hosted many kids’ birthday parties. Travel: Japan in the Spring
Exploring Japan in the Spring
Pursuing Passion for Anime, Manga & Ramen
Songkran in Nichada is usually thought of in one of two ways: first, as a local experience involving plastic artillery and ice water or second, as time off to escape the oppressive heat and the crowded revelry of the Bangkok streets. Our family decided to head to cooler weather and experience a different type of vacation this year by traveling to Japan in April. While the natural beauty of the Cherry Blossom season in Japan is hardly a secret to anyone in this area of the world, it was not the primary goal of our Songkran vacation. Yes, we did experience the wonders of pink and white flower petals falling to the impeccably clean Japanese streets, but our main mission was to experience a culinary and visual tour of our two daughter’s favorite Japanese sub-culture: Anime (computer animation) and Manga (Japanese comics).
42
We started our self-developed tour in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. No Japan visit is complete without experiencing the fullness of the Shinjuku train station at rush hour (reported to be the busiest in the world). Another one of our daughter’s favorite past-times is eating Ramen noodles, and it was an adventure finding small, local noodle shops hidden between high-end department stores and the busy commercial offices of this bustling district. Next stop on the tour was a visit to the Akihabara district to face the anime and manga head on. Also known as Electric Town, Akihabara is where the die-hard fan-boys and girls go to peruse endless shops of DVDs, magazines, figures, and collectibles based on these popular animated stories. The main area was visually overwhelming with the colors of Japanese animation blending with antiquated discount electronics such as DVDs and PDAs. The rounded softness of Japanese anime signs juxtaposed harshly against the pixelated retro game figures of the 1980s, giving this area a nostalgic feel. We arrived early and had to let this area wake up. But when the people came (and they started to a little before lunch), the shops were busy with a mix of local businessmen,

Travel teenage fanboys, and curious tourists making their way through stalls of “UFO Catchers” and capsule stations. My daughters had found their Nirvana. The next point of exploration was a short, but culturally important street in the Harajuku district called Takeshita Dori. This area is a focal point of extreme teenage fashion and cosplay, with trendy boutiques and used clothing stores containing the fashion-conscious teenage crowds. Don’t let the extravagance and extremeness of the dress fool you, as some of the best crepes in Tokyo can be had here as well! I’d suggest ordering a couple of crepe cones and then sitting on the street corner to do some of the most interesting people watching in Asia. Of course, we fit in a day trip to Tokyo Disney, visited the Tokyo Museum of Art, and also took the bullet train down to Kyoto for a few days to see the obligatory “cherry blossom” streets, but I won’t bore you with those tiresome details. However, I will recommend that anyone going to Kyoto book an afternoon lesson at the Ramen Factory where noodle chefs teach you the intricate details of how to perfect this signature Japanese (and college student) dish. Our entire family are now certified Ramen Noodle cooks (we have a certificate to prove it!).

Clearance Sale as ST Trading Shop Closes on May 31
One more local store is calling it quits, succumbing to the exodus of expat clients in recent years. Tata Thongthaeb, owner of ST Trading, a little home decor shop outside Nichada's main gate, said she will be closing at her current location (between New York Diner and Slider Shack) on May 31. "Before when Chevron was here, I could sell," she said. (Chevron is still in Thailand, but many of its expat staff have left in recent years. - ed.). "Now
only embassy and private companies. Not too many people," Tata said. For the past three years, said Tata, she has seen a steady drop in sales. The closing of ST Trading on Soi Prasert Issaram comes shortly after Emack and Bolio, the premium ice cream shop chain, recently closed its branch inside Nichada Thani. Tata said that after she closes the Soi Prasert shop on May 31, she will move her business to her home, a shophouse at #4, Soi Samakkee, Soi 25. It's opposite the PTT gas station on Soi Samakkee. To prepare for her move, Tata is holding a big clearance sale, offering 30% to 50% off on all items in her store. More than 90% of her souvenirs and home decor items are made in Thailand, she said. Rugs are from her husband Ali Syed's native Pakistan. Tata said that even if she loses money on the clearance sale, it’s okay. She just wants to close down the Soi Prasert location in order to trim operating expenses. For more information, Tata can be contacted at: 081-943-3749 Liz Lu

Restaurant Review
Greyhound Café...Never Disappoints!
For this month’s article, I did a little research for fun to see how many restaurants there are in a typical mall in Bangkok. Central Chaengwattana, a suburban middleof-the-range shopping mall nearby, alone boasts over 30 restaurants, not counting food stalls in the food court. Meanwhile, Bangkok’s Central World’s latest count of restaurants is almost 100. It’s no surprise that you might feel a bit overwhelmed when deciding where to eat! However, I can suggest one restaurant that would neither disappoint nor would you ever get bored of, and that’s Greyhound Café. Greyhound Café originated in 1997. The brand Greyhound is a fashion brand under the same ownership. Greyhound Café established its first branch at the Emporium Mall and became an instant hit, drawing lines of people outside its doors since its inception. Luckily for us, it’s 2019 and now Greyhound Café has 16 branches nationwide (including one in Blueport Mall, Hua Hin) and has expanded its brand to include more offspring brands such as Another Hound Café, and Gin-Hey. We have always LOVED Greyhound Café as a family. It has a variety of menus that fit everyone’s needs, from Thai food, European, American food or even Japanese. Their food and even drink menus are so extensive that even now after over 10 years of being a regular customer, I still haven’t tried every dish! I think it’s because I always go for my favorite dish whenever I visit it. May 2019
A few of my favorites by category! Soup and Salad: Grilled Pumpkin and Tofu Salad; Appetizers: Italian Bruchetta, Salmon Sashimi in Spicy Hot Sauce, Crispy Sweet Corn and Crab Meat, and Complicated Noodle (just try it ☺), Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wing; Noodles: beef salad noodle; Thai Main Dish: Thai Fried Rice with Dried Beef. An extensive vegetarian menu is also available. The drink offerings are also just as impressive. I do not have enough space to list them all, but their drinks categories are cold beverages, hot beverages, fruit juices, floats, granitas, smoothies, and mocktails. Cocktails, wines and beer are available at certain branches. Their dessert choices are: toasts, crepes, cakes, Thai desserts, and ice cream. Another thing that keeps us going back is their special seasonal menu. For example, during Thanksgiving/Christmas time, they’ll feature menus such as turkey and stuffing, with cranberry sauce and bread pudding. Currently their specials are the Best of Northern and Southern Thai Dishes, featuring favorite traditional Northern and Southern food. Also currently on offer is their “Into the Oasis” Heineken beer special. The Heineken beer blends include Hidden Daydream (mojito style beer), Citrus Wanderlust (Yusu orange flavored beer) and Ruby Star (Lemon and Salacca infused beer). Their offerings keep coming and changing and keep drawing us back there. I guarantee you’ll love Greyhound Café so much and will keep going back there just like we do. To find out more about Greyhound Café branches, check out their web site at www.greyhoundcafe.co.th. The closest one to Nichada Thani is at Central Ladprao. But you’ll find Greyhound Café at almost every major shopping mall in downtown Bangkok. Citibank card holders get 10% off food menus.
