NNR Board Welcomes New Charity Coordinator Former Charity Coordinator Imogen Lee I’m from the UK, and I’ve been in Thailand 3 years. As NNR Charities Coordinator, it has been a pleasure to get to know so many inspirational people in our broader community who do so much for others in need. I am proud of the work that NNR has done for so long to support local charities, and I will miss working with the NNR Board and our community partners. However I am looking forward to continuing my own volunteering commitments, including at Sparrow Home, a children’s home that NNR connected me with three years ago.

New Charity Coordinator Jenna Deacon-Potter My family moved to Bangkok 18 months ago after previous assignments in Madrid, Barcelona and Hong Kong. We are originally from the UK and our children Toby (11) and Daisy (9) both attend ISB. My husband, Nick, works for the Aetna group. Last year I worked with the ISB PTA as Welcome Wai Coordinator and part of the team delivering the International Family Fair. I’m excited to start working with NNR and our local charities. I’ll be focusing on funding and identifying volunteer and enrichment opportunities. I would love to hear from you if you can offer some of your time and skills to one of our charitable partners.

Cover Story: Heard It Through the Grapevine

Heard It Through the Grapevine: Mega Edition Sawaddhi kha! Welcome to Thani Talk, a free monthly magazine published by NNR (Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach). NNR is a non-profit volunteer group founded in 1994. Thani Talk started as an 8-page type-written community newsletter. It is now a 52-page monthly magazine with a print as well as an online edition (issuu.com/ nnrthanitalk). We provide the community with news, features and other helpful information that make life easier and help to better connect us all. The magazine’s advertisements help fund grants to NNR-supported charities (listed on pages 34-35)

Each September, as we welcome newcomers to our community, we kick off with a mega edition of our popular tips section, “Heard It Through the Grapevine”. The Grapevine pages are where readers share tips and recommendations about great local businesses and other resources. In this month’s issue, we start with a list of great social media resources, followed by new tips as well as classic ones worth repeating. If you have a good tip to share with neighbors, please email your recommendation to me at: nnrnews@gmail. com. Happy reading! Liz Lu, Editor

Social Media Resources Connect Neighbors The international community of nearly 1,400 households inside and outside Nichada Thani has built a strong support network via social media tools such as Facebook groups and pages, texting apps such as Line, Whatsapp and WeChat, and community websites. Here’s a quick tour of the many internet resources available at your fingertips. WEBSITE

By happy happenstance, the UN portion of the name also hints at the United Nations aspect of our community. With more than 50 nationalities represented, our neighborhood is as diverse as the world organization. UnofficialNichada has helpful tabs covering categories such as hiring maids, local restaurants, relocation and movers, services and repairs, and health, sports and fitness. It offers convenient links to many resources, including links to Thani Talk magazine. “There are no dumb questions here,” Susan posted about the website, but she also encourages visitors to search the UnofficialNichada database of answers first, with the gentle reminder: Search Before You Ask.

Unofficialnichada.com UnofficialNichada, a website packed with a wealth of information and useful links, was launched in August 2017. It was designed through a joint effort by volunteers Susan Yates, Sara Tighe and Kiki O’Connor. Susan spearheaded the website project because she said when she first arrived in Nichada, she found it difficult to find easily searchable information in one location. So she put her art, design and computer skills to use and working closely with Sara and Kiki, soon created and launched the website UnofficialNichada.com. The name “UnofficialNichada” underscores the independent voice of the website since it’s run by volunteers and supports community and charity. 10

Similar to university freshman classes, there’s a new Newbies FB group each year. The Admins invite newcomers as well as some Nichada veterans to the group to help answer questions from newbies.

Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach (NNR) Facebook Page This page is produced by NNR, our local non-profit volunteer organization. With 671 followers, it is updated by NNR Communications Director, Kiki O’Connor. Kiki keeps you posted about events in Nonthaburi and beyond, including NNR gatherings and trips, sales, and other community activities.

Facebook GROUPS Expats of Nichada (Closed group. 1,727 members) If you need advice on any and everything about life in Thailand and especially our Nonthaburi neighborhood, be it questions about handymen, maids, doctors, restaurants, bikes and golf carts, join and check out this supportive Facebook group of neighbors. Nichada Expats Yard Sale (Closed group. 1,813 members) From new and used clothing, to furniture, appliances and golf carts, this is the Facebook group where you can find them. Nichada Announcement (Closed group.) Created by the Nichada Thani company in July, 2019, the goal of this new FB group is to promote the use of electronic media and reduce paper use, said Scott Roman, General Manager of N1/N2. Nichada’s printed newsletter, which shares news of events such as Secret Garden, etc. and ads, will still be delivered to residents. Most Popular Texting Apps In addition to Facebook pages and groups, texting apps such as Line, WeChat and Whatsapp are also important ways of staying in touch in this community. Line The Line app, created by Japanese developers, is the most popular texting app in Thailand. If you want to stay in touch with Thai friends, most likely they’ll be using the Line app. Often times, a Line group is the preferred way for locals to communicate with friends or an interest group. Sharing cute cartoon stickers is popular in Thailand. Line friends can share texts, photos, videos, and make free local and international calls. Whatsapp Partially blocked in China, Whatsapp is used by many from Europe and North America. WeChat The WeChat app is the most popular texting app in China. Many in Thailand also use it. Here in Bangkok if you meet friends from China, chances are that they use WeChat. Facebook Messenger Private or group messages using Facebook Messenger is also a popular way to connect with others here. To contact someone in the Expats of Nichada FB group, for example, just tag them in the group with a private message. Liz Lu

On-Line Grocery Delivery One of the best pieces of advice I received when moving to Nichada was getting on-line grocery delivery. We had to wait five months for our car to arrive via boat, so the ability to order and have groceries delivered to the house was very helpful. Many of the local grocery stores offer online ordering or order via a phone App for a very low fee or even for free. Most offer next day delivery service and some, even same-day delivery within a few hours. Here’s a list of my favorites: Big C- https://www.bigc. co.th/?___store=en&___from_store=en Tesco Lotus- https://shoponline.tescolotus.com/ groceries/th-TH/?utm_source=CorporateWebsite&utm_ medium=Link&utm_campaign=Corporate Tops- https://www.topsmarkets.com/ Villa- https://shoponline.villamarket.com/?___ store=nichada_en&___from_store=sukhumvit33_en Makro- https://www.siammakro.co.th/index.php Stacey Byrne 12

Lazada: The Amazon of Thailand If you need a toaster, hard to find light bulb, bean bag refills, diapers or a new TV and don’t want to leave the house to find them—Lazada is your new best friend! It’s similar to Amazon. Products in just about every category imaginable at competitive prices on offer - you’ll just want to pay attention to the country it’s shipping from. Most items in the Bangkok area arrive within a day or two, out-of-country items can take weeks. Credit cards accepted but there’s also a Cash On Delivery option, and Lazada will send you a message when your parcel is out for delivery via motorbike or truck depending on the package size. www.lazada.co.th/ Susan Yates

A Choice of Food Delivery Services Nichada Thani has several food delivery services. The two that I’ve used are Line Man and Grab. Both services are quick and reliable. With Line Man, I have had a bit of problem with location pin. The delivery guys always get lost if they follow the pin. Grab has an easier time finding us. Adding more details to the address area (when you order) always help them find us easier. Payment with Line Man is limited to 1,000 baht if you want to pay cash. If you order more, you have to create a Rabbit Pay account which is linked to your credit card. With GrabFood, I set up GrabPay which is like a mobile wallet you can top up. When I set it up, the only option available was to link it with my mobile bank account but the process was easy and intuitive. But of course, cash is accepted as well. In terms of restaurant choice, alot is offered on both Line Man and GrabFood, but they are not exactly the same. For example, Tony’s Kitchen in the Srichaithong neighborhood outside Nichada’s back gate (neaer Greenville), is only available through Line Man. Pricewise, both food delivery apps are equally competitive. Both offer English-language interface which is pretty easy to navigate. Vara Sumetanon

Post Offices in Pakkred

Above: The new Thai post office on 2nd floor of the Oasis shopping complex. Service hours are 9am- 7pm. When you need to mail a letter or package, there are many post offices in Pakkred for your convenience: 1) ISB campus offers postal services at two facilities opposite the Booster Hut. The bookstore provides regular mail service and sells stamps. If you want your letter to go out that day, be sure to mail it at the bookstore by 8:30 am. Right next to the bookstore is the mail room which provides overseas express mail service via DHL, FedEx, and UPS. 2) Oasis Shopping Center on Samakkee Road. From Nichada main gate, turn left on Samakkee. Post office is on the 2nd floor in the same shopping complex as McDonald’s and White Elephant Thrift Shop. This new branch sells decorative stamps. The facility is modern, with seating for those waiting in line, similar to the set-up of branch offices of local banks. Boxes, mailing envelopes, and wrapping supplies are all available for sale. 14

3) Just before the HaYaek intersection (intersection of Chaengwattana and Tiwanon roads). From Nichada, drive north on Tiwanon-Pakkred Road. Post office is on the left, between Soi 9 and Soi 11. 4) Near Pakkred Pier. At HaYaek intersection, turn left towards Pakkred Pier, make U-turn at end of street just before the river, take first left turn to Sukkhaprachasan Road 2. Post office is about 200 meters down the road on your left. This is the post office where you pick up packages mailed from overseas. Be sure to bring an ID when picking up packages. 5) At Impact/Challenger Hall of Muang Thong Thani, on ground floor near Flann O’Brien’s Irish Pub. Makes it convenient if you want to mail a purchase bought at an exhibition at the center. 6) Main Thai government post office on Chaengwattana Road. Located between Chaengwattana Soi 7 and Soi 5, this center is where branch post offices send their mail for processing and overseas delivery. It’s where I go for the best selection of decorative stamps.

What to Do, Where to Go in Case of a Snake Bite Since our community sits on former rice fields, there are occasional reports of snake sightings in the neighborhood. What to do if someone in your family is bitten by a snake? Here is a list some emergency contact information that may come in handy in the event of a close encounter. Doctors in all local hospital emergency rooms speak some English. Most major hospitals can treat snake bites. Nearby private hospitals/clinics: Mongkutwattaa General Hospital (02-574-5000) 34/40 Chaengwattana Rd. (12.9 km from Nichada) Nonthavej Hospital (02-596-7888) 30/8 Ngamwongwan Rd. (7.8 km from Nichada) World Medical Center (02-836-9977) 44 M.4 Chaengwattana Road (2.4 km from Nichada) When anyone is bitten by a snake, it is important to describe the snake to emergency staff, because the treatment is different among neurotoxin-producing snakes, hematotoxin-producing snakes and myotoxinproducing snakes. Take a photo of snake if possible. While waiting for medical help, please ensure that the patient lies down with the wound below the heart, keep the person calm and at rest.

Victim should remain as still as possible to prevent the venom from spreading. Cover the wound with loose, sterile bandage and see a doctor immediately. Joy Pruksanubal

JumNails: Local Nail Salon Offers Top Service

Looking for a beautiful manicure or pedicure salon in the neighborhood? I highly recommend JumNails. Khun Jum has been in the Nichada neighborhood for nearly 5 years, and I’ve had the good fortune to be her customer since she arrived. Intricate nail art is one of her specialties—check out her handiwork on Facebook at Jum Naildesign. Personally, I’ve had great luck with her long-lasting gel manicures. She has the largest selections of colors I’ve seen anywhere in Thailand or the U.S. and all services are provided in a very comfortable salon setting. JumNails’ shop hours are Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 7pm and on Sunday by appointment. Her salon is located September 2019

just outside the Nichada front gate to the right on Samakkee 18, past Sweet Poppy. Please give her a try—you’ll be very happy you did!

Milkman Sa-Oat Delivers to Your Door What a luxury it is to have fresh milk, eggs, juice, yogurt and even water delivered to your door. That’s what we all get to enjoy here in our neighborhood, because Khun Sa-Oat and his wife Khun Maew roll through Nichada three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) in their pickup truck to deliver these essential items. They are super friendly and always greet customers with a smile. If you would like K. Sa-Oat to stop by at your home, simply call him to add your home to his route. You’ll need to ask a Thai speaker to make the call. Liz Lu

Ishiya Drycleaner: Free Pick-ups & Delivery Ishiya Drycleaning offers an absolutely superb doorto-door pickup and delivery service here in the Nichada area twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Simply give a quick call to Mr Kumata at 081-8143128 before Wednesday or Saturday, and he will show up with his assistant to pick up your order. He speaks English so communication is no problem. They can also handle orders in Japanese and Thai. We send him orders for drycleaning as well as laundering of dress shirts, and the workmanship is excellent. I highly recommend his service. Liz Lu

The shop also stocks cake decoration paraphernalia such as sprinkles, flavorings and speciality cup cake cups. Aetna Clinic in Nichada Offers Primary and Travel Care; Soon to Launch Virtual Care

Dr. Krit The Aetna Family Clinic in Nichada is preparing to expand services soon, by offering Virtual Care and Saturday hours, said its Medical Director Dr Krit Kuruchaiyapanich. The clinic, which opened in May 2018 opposite the 7-Eleven inside Nichada, is scheduled to first launch its VHealth program (V for Virtual) internally to Aetna employees in September, before offering the virtual consultation service to all Aetna insurance clients later this year, said Dr. Krit. Patients will be able to receive free consultations by accessing VHeath through their mobile phones or computers, he said. Medications and follow up care require payments, he said. In addition, the Aetna Family Clinic is applying to the Ministry of Public Health for permission to add clinic hours on Saturdays, said Dr. Krit. For the new Saturday service, which may begin as early as October, Aetna will be recruiting paediatricians specializing in pulmonary and respiratory care such as asthma and allergies, he said. In addition to these planned new services, Aetna Family Clinic's seven-person staff, including three physicians, will continue to offer primary care including health checkups often needed for driver's license application, domestic staff health screenings, athlete health checks, and work permit applications, said Dr. Krit. A basic health screening at the Aetna clinic costs 850 baht and is often used for athlete and domestic staff health screenings. Not included in this basic health test are screenings for HIV (extra 800 baht) Hepatitis (extra 815 baht), and 12-lead EKG electrocardiogram (extra 1,000 baht). For foreigners applying for a work permit, another health screening that includes blood and urine analysis costs 1,300 baht, he said. The clinic is equipped to handle primary care cases such as wound care for cuts and burns, dehydration, and cases of dog and cat bites but not snake bites, said Dr. Krit. For 18

snake bites, he advises patients to go to large hospitals that have snake bite serums in stock. (See list of local hospitals on p. 15) In addition to Dr. Krit, an emergency medicine specialist, the medical staff includes Dr. Lapakorn Chatapat (travel and tropical disease medicine), and Dr. Ranida Techasuwanna (travel and tropical medicine). Aetna Family Clinic is open Mondays-Fridays, 9am-6pm. (Tel: 02-960-4216) Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcomed. Liz Lu

Notes from an Alarmed, Irate Relieved Father Saga of Snatched Purse

(Lt. to rt.) Police Colonel Seng of the Pakkred Police station, Chad Moore, Maggie Moore, and Lieutenant Benz. No one wants to be the victim of a crime. It’s especially hard to swallow when it happens to your children. Here in the comfortable bubble we call Nichada Thani, it’s easy to grow complacent. Situational awareness is ever important though – especially right outside of our gates. On a recent Sunday afternoon, my two teenage daughters, Maggie and Lola, were returning from the mall in our family golf cart. Just outside the Seechaithong gate, as they waited for the car in front of them to enter the neighborhood, a man on a motor bike snatched Maggie’s purse from the front basket of the cart. My girls raced home, a bit shaken. I was immediately flooded with both dismay and fury, followed by a deep breath and the question ‘What do I do now?’ What DO You Do if This Happens to You? We reported the theft at the small police station by the Nichada main gate. Using my barely passable Thai and his limited English, the police officer took a brief statement of what happened and what items were inside the purse. He then directed us to the Pakkred Police Station (Phone: 02-582-0175, Address: 13/13, Soi S 3, Ban Mai). In hindsight, unless it’s an emergency, the Pakkred Station should be your first stop if this happens to you. The officers were kind and helpful. Though some English was spoken, the Google Translate app was very helpful in adding clarity to our conversation! They took us back to the scene of the crime to describe exactly what happened, S1e9p t e m b e r 2 0 1 9

then we returned to the station to complete a full written statement. The process took 2 to 3 hours but was, in the end, so worth it! Don’t Be an Easy Target! Ultimately, our story had a happy ending. Because my younger daughter, Lola, kept a cool head and took notice of the man’s clothing, the police were able to use CC TV from around the area to find the culprit, along with the stolen belongings. If this happens to you, try to remain calm and observe what you Arrestee can. License plate? Distinct clothing? Tattoos? Better yet, don’t be a soft target! Particularly when outside of our gates, always be alert. Check your rearview mirror frequently. Keep a grasp on your valuables, especially in traffic. Maggie, Lola, and I are hopeful that the lessons learned from this experience will inspire others to be more diligent in their situational awareness. Safe carting!

After-the-Boxes, a support group for newcomers, kicked off the school year with a packed schedule of orientation sessions and tours for new neighbors. Co-chaired by Jen Ludow and Livonia Winkles, ATB hosted a huge Welcome Coffee at Jen’s home on Aug. 19th that attracted more than 60 attendees. The ATB team handed out an info packet filled helpful tips, including maps, phone numbers and advice on hiring maids. At the Welcome Coffee, guests met representatives from a variety of community groups and received plenty of advice on getting settled successfully. Refreshments at the morning coffee were provided by neighbors who own local businesses—caterers Beatriz & Carla, as well as the owners of Sweet Poppy. Chairs for the event were provided by Nichada Thani. ATB wasted no time in getting their tours started. A mere four days later on Aug. 22, volunteer guides took newcomers on a morning golf cart tour of the neighborhoods inside and outside Nichada. The excursion ended with lunch at a local Thai restaurant. The following Monday, Aug. 26, ATB invited a speaker from Expat Holidays Thailand to share tips about traveling, especially in Asia. More ATB tours are coming up in September (see list on the right). If you’re interested, please contact: aftertheboxesnichada@gmail.com.

NNR Tour Highlights

Highlights: NNR’s May Floral Arts Workshop Sponsored by Asian Tigers

On Friday morning, May 10th, the NNR tour team organized “Floral Arts Workshop”. NNR offers the lovely Floral Arts Workshop once a year. It was the first time for me to join the workshop, and I was looking forward to learning the Thai style of flower arrangement. On that day, we learned the art of creating garlands, and the rich history and symbolism of flower arrangement in Thailand. I had a little experience with the Japanese art of flower arrangement, Ikebana, as well as some exposure to Western flower arrangement. I thought Thai flower arrangement was very similar to Western flower arrangement until I joined the Floral Arts Workshop. Ikebana and western flower arrangement have quite different perspectives. Ikebana uses “Kenzan” which is a small metal base with many needles for fixing flowers in the container. Ikebana also uses flowers, leaves, and branches. Ikebana is conscious of line with some spaces. Its design uses asymmetry. On the other hand, Western flower arrangements secure flowers with a base called an “Oasis”, which is September 2019

made of a synthetic material and looks like a sponge. Designers insert many flowers and leaves into the “Oasis” to make round shapes. Flowers are well-arranged, and the shapes are more symmetrical, without any spaces. At the NNR workshop, held at the home of NNR Board member Birgit Sund, we made Thai-style flower arrangements. Firstly, we inserted many colorful beautiful flowers and fresh green leaves into an “Oasis” in a small basket. It was like a Western arrangement. Secondly, they taught an original idea. We created two types of art flower. We passed some small cute white flowers through a straight wire to create garlands. We also opened the petals of the closed white and pink lotuses and folded the petals to make a shape. We learned three different types of folding, then we inserted white beautiful garlands and the lotuses with its petals folded in a couple of parts. Folding the petals to make a shape was a very fresh idea for me. It was like “Origami”, the art of paper folding which I learned as a child. The Thai style arrangement was similar to the Western arrangement, although, I felt that Thai flower arrangement is more like art, whereas Western flower arrangements use flowers that look natural. We were surrounded by gorgeous flowers and had a great time. It was a fruitful and graceful morning. Thank you so much, dear Maida and Pascale, for organizing such a wonderful experience. I would also like to thank Brigit Sund, who offered her gorgeous house. Thank you also to flower arrangement teachers provided by Asian Tigers. I can’t wait until the next one !

Day Trip: Mahanakhon Skyscraper Offers Breathtaking View Through a Glass Floor

If you have out-of-town visitors with only a day or two for sightseeing, consider treating them to a Bangkok day-trip that mixes super modern architecture with charming, traditional Thai culture. Friends and family visited in August, all with limited time in town. I decided to start their day trip at the ultra modern King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk. Owned by the King Power company of duty-free fame, the Mahanakhon skyscraper at 114 Naradhiwat Rajanagarindra Road (near the BTS Chongnongsi station) looks like a Jenga tower in progress, with “bites” taken out of it. A hydraulic elevator with video displays on the walls speeds you up 74 floors to the indoor deck. A bit further up, on the 78th floor, is the outdoor deck. At the apex is a treat —the Glass Tray, a glass-bottom balcony that juts out 310 meters above Bangkok. Not for anyone with acrophobia. On the day we visited, it was raining slightly so the Tray was closed briefly, and a staff member had to mop it dry before it was reopened. Cotton shoe covers must be worn before you venture out onto the glass floor. Some people inched out onto the Tray with trepidation; others were fearless and danced or did push ups without a second thought. The view of the world beneath your feet is breathtaking. We visited in the morning, but for those interested in witnessing Bangkok lit up at night below them, the Mahanakhon Glass Tray is open to visitors until midnight. Cost of admission ticket varies depending on which of the September 2019

many online deals you find. Through Sept. 30, the King Power website (ticketing.kingpowermahanakhon.co.th) offers discounts of 15% on weekdays and 5% on weekends. For example, with this promotional discount, adult admission can be as low as 650 baht per person on weekdays. A small cafe at the top serves smoothies, water and other beverages. Next to the Glass Tray is a set of wide, curving steps that lead you up to the next level, where an open-air sitting area awaits you, and where you can enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of the Bangkok skyline. A good time was had by all. The only damper on the visit was that in order to exit the building, you must navigate a daunting obstacle course—an endless maze of duty-free shops before King Power finally sets you free. From the Mahanakhon, I guided my hungry guests to the Jim Thompson House on Rama I Road for a traditional Thai lunch, followed by a tour of Thompson’s famous wooden Thai house and a stop at the gift shop showcasing his famous Thai silks. We capped the day with Thai foot massages. My friends said that the Glass Tray was the highlight of their day.

Scuba-Diving in Indonesia

Week-long Getaway to See Sea Life & Komodo Dragons Many readers of Thani Talk may be familiar with Bali, a beautiful island in Indonesia that is famous for its beaches, resorts, and nightlife. However, did you know that just an hour’s flight from Bali, you can see Komodo dragons? Dive with giant manta rays? I recently visited the group of islands in the Flores Sea for my honeymoon . Let me tell you all the reasons why this needs to be your next tropical getaway. Most people fly into the town of Labuan Bajo from Bali to arrive on the island of Flores. We flew on Wings Abadi Airline from Bali to Labuan Bajo on a jet, not a propeller island hopper. This small fishing town is the main center of commerce in Flores, and it’s here that many tourists charter boats or tours to see the surrounding islands. My husband and I chartered a boat for five days, and also arranged our scuba gear rentals. From Labuan Bajo, we hopped on the boat and were off to our first stop of the trip. Komodo National Park is just what it sounds like—it’s the only place in the world where you can find Komodo dragons, the largest currently living species of lizard. The lizards are quite dangerous, so we were required to hire a ranger who helped guide us through the terrain and see specimens up close. There were also water buffalo and small deer in the brush, which the dragons hunt for food once a month. The hike was breathtaking in its beautiful views of the surrounding islands; the lizards brought us

42

there, but I’d definitely go back just to see those vistas again. After Komodo, we cooled down from the hike with a quick snorkeling session. We were exceedingly lucky and got to snorkel with a school of giant manta rays. That would’ve been the highlight of the day, except we soon zipped over to Kalong Island, which is also known as Flying Fox island. To our surprise, we got to witness thousands upon thousands of flying fox bats take flight as the sun set. It was a singular sight, and quite an excellent way to bring our first day to a close. The three days following, we went scuba diving. For this dive excursion, I recommend a minimum of 30 hours of previous diving experience; it is not easy water. I earned my diving certification from the Dive Me Crazy Diving Center in Nichada Thani several years ago. I’ve always heard that diving in Indonesia is some of the best in the world. At first I was skeptical. In the Flores Sea, as we visited dive site after dive site, I quickly became a believer. We completed a total of seven dives in three days, and every single dive had a spectacular sighting—sea turtles, sharks, manta rays, cuttlefish, the list went on. In contrast, when I went diving in Thailand, I felt lucky to have seen a couple of turtles in a week of diving. If any of our readers do decide to check out the diving, I highly recommend the following dive sites: Current City, Batu Balong, Castle Rock, and Manta Point. Every site has fantastic coral and sea life to see, but Manta Point is

unique in that you get to ‘fly’ with a current for over twenty minutes to go see the mantas. The last day we relaxed (you cannot get on a plane a day before or after diving for safety reasons), and the boat took us to lounge on Pink Beach and snorkel in the crystal blue water. Given the amount of pollution I see on beaches even in Thailand, the islands in the Flores Sea feel very precious. The water is clear and blue; the sand is unlittered; and the scenery feels almost unreal a lot of the time. I would strongly urge anyone looking for a slice of paradise to check out this untouched gem in Indonesia. (And as a final note, please help to keep Flores beautiful - do not touch coral or sea life, do not litter, and please respect the natural landscape!) Have fun in Indonesia everyone. Restaurant Review

Foresté Café: A Garden Restaurant in Pakkred I was pleasantly surprised to finally find a great little café close to Nichada. The Foreste café is located less than 10 minutes from Nichada. It is on the Pakkred bypass road (where Home Pro is located). You cross the bridge over Chaengwattana Road and drive a bit until you see Soi 16 on the left. Foreste Café is also easy to find on Google Earth as is the Anna Nava hotel which is next door. There is ample parking which is also convenient. The first thing you may notice is that there will be many customers, dressed quite nicely, and nearly all of them will be taking photos and/or selfies. This place is apparently well known as a place to take great Instagram photos. Whether you’re into that kind of thing or not… it is something to see. There is a large, air-conditioned, main building with a counter and about 12 tables. There are many more tables outside in the garden. It is the garden you see, that is the point of coming here. It’s quite nice with paths, koi ponds, even a waterfall! It is well shaded with trees and there are misting fans which keep it quite comfortable even during the afternoon. You order your food at the counter. The menu is not extensive. There is a basic coffee menu as well as tea, milk, and cocoa. The coffee is great and there is a 5 baht discount for bringing your own cup and not using single-use plastic. There is a small selection of Italian sodas. There are a few types of sandwiches and burgers. Strangely the rest of the menu is in Thai. There are several photos on the counter which can help you figure it out. Once you order they will give you a small beeper which lets you know when your order is ready to pick up at the counter. My favorite are the creamy omelets. In a faux skillet you’ll get a scoop of rice covered with a creamy cheesy omelet with a side. I highly recommend the green curry or mu krapow (pork sauteed with basil). I’ve seen other customers with fried calamari, french fries and ham and cheese croissants. There is also a selection of cakes and other desserts. It’s worth mentioning that the prices are very reasonable. Four dishes and four drinks cost me less than 500 baht. Foreste Café is a fun little place, very close to home. It opens up at 7am (whereas most other cafes open around 10am). It’s a great place for coffee and a snack in a pleasant atmosphere. The scenery is sure to be a hit on your Instagram.
