NNR’s 20th Anniversary

NNR @ 20 A Look Back in Time Did you know that there used to be a horse-back riding facility inside Nichada Thani? It was located where Tropical Condo now sits. Lessons were available for both children and adults. High school teens earned community service hours there by helping handicapped children ride horses as a means of physical therapy.

Thani Talk ~April 2015

Thai Songkran Festival: So what is all the fuss and water about? In 2015 Songkran will take place between April 13 to 15. So other than a mass exodus from Bangkok by vast numbers of the population, and traffic delays that turn a 1-hour journey into a 5-hour ordeal, what is Songkran about? Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival. It is an important event on the Buddhist calendar, with the water festival marking the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. The name Songkran comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'passing' or 'approaching'. Water has always been an important element of Songkran, but more so in recent times when the throwing of water has become a significant part of the annual celebration. If you're in Thailand during this period, don't be surprised if you get splashed. Crowds of people roam around throwing buckets of water, using water pistols and just generally soaking anyone in the vicinity. If you don’t want to get wet then stay indoors, as normally those throwing water show little or no mercy on either Thais or foreigners alike. As part of the water sprinkling and water splashing rites, you may also encounter a person with a small silver bowl filled with a white powder or a pasty white substance. This is one of the oldest Songkran traditions. The white paste is a sign of protection and promises to ward off evil. The person with the paste is often older and he or she applies the paste to various parts of the face, neck and torso of others. One is expected to leave this paste on until it washes off of its own accord, and while there is a tendency to shy away from this paste because it looks like it might ruin the clothes, it is water soluble and will not harm materials.

Appreciation of family is another important aspect of the festival, with many Thais returning to their hometowns to spend time with older relatives. During Songkran, Buddhists also visit temples, where water is poured on Buddha images and on to the hands of Buddhist monks as a mark of respect. Three Days of Songkran The first day of the festival (13 April) known as “Songkran Day” is an exuberant celebration with processions of Buddha images taking place throughout Thailand. Thai people also prepare themselves for the beginning of the New Year by cleaning their houses on this day. More importantly, Songkran Day is when the water throwing really gets going in earnest, so be prepared!

Cover Story: Songkran

The day following Songkran Day (14 April) is Wan Nao which is the celebration of the old Thai New Year's Eve and takes place when the sun travels between Pisces and Aries. During Wan Nao you can observe one of Songkran's more formal rituals as it is on this day that many Buddhists go to their temples to build sand chedis (a sand castle built to resemble a Buddhist temple.) The actual Thai New Year’s Day is not celebrated until the third day which in 2015 is on April 15. Thai New Year's Day is the final day of the recognised Songkran. Offerings are left at temples on this day to ring in the New Year, with plenty of other events and much partying also taking place. In Bangkok during Songkran, the official opening ceremony is usually held at Wat Pho which is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand, and home to the spectacular giant gold-plated reclining Buddha. Many other celebrations are also held in and around the Khao San Road area, which is popular with foreign backpackers. Events during the festival include water throwing, the ritual bathing of Buddha images, processions and performances. A tempting array of traditional foods can also be enjoyed throughout the celebration. Without doubt, Songkran is a hugely important festival to the Thai people, but it is also very popular with visitors and tourists alike who specifically arrange their holidays around this unique event. Anyone and everyone can and do get involved in the celebrations. If you're out and about during Songkran, you're almost guaranteed to end up soaked but you'll have lots of fun in the process! Songkran Road Safety Mixing water fights, driving and alcohol can often lead to trouble. That is why during Songkran week, with motorcyclists and drivers dodging water guns and revelers taking to the highways, there is always a spike in road accidents and fatalities throughout the kingdom. Each year, police set up extra check points to administer breathalyzer tests. In 2014, the Road Safety Directing Centre reported that during Songkran week, there were 2,481 road accidents nationwide, resulting in 248 deaths and 2,643 injuries. If you will be on the road, be ready for the unexpected splash of water and the resulting slippery roads. Open-air vehicles such as golf carts, tuk-tuks, and motorcycles are not spared. Liz Lu 9

Thani Talk ~April 2015

Our Songkran Experiences Ideas on Where and How to Celebrate My family has been in Thailand only two years, but we’ve made sure to make the most of our Songkran celebrations. The first year (2013) we celebrated in Nichada, downtown Bangkok, then on to Pattaya. The second year, we started in Bangkok again, then down to Krabi. All festivities have been fun, safe, and incident free. As long as you use common sense, you will have a fantastic time. My then-five year old enjoying the

Some advice for all celebrations (by no means an endorsement or madness of Siam Square otherwise!):  Be sure to pack your phone, money and other valuables in plastic bags. Leave wallets, purses, backpacks at home or in an attended car whenever possible. Despite your best intentions, everything will get soaked. (Most pictures you see here were taken while my phone was in a Ziploc.)

10

Be prepared for lots of traffic. It’s best to take public transportation when possible.

Wear lightweight, dark-colored clothing that you don’t mind getting wet and powdery. Jeans will become heavy, but heavy linens and cottons will dry quickly and allow for modesty.

Wear closed-toed and/or waterproof shoes wherever possible to avoid the Bangkok muck.

Use caution when taking younger kids out. Pre-teen and older should be fine, but small children can be a target. Babies, in our experience, have escaped the water treatment. Some very nice Thai women have asked my permission to wet the babies’ hands, as a more traditional way of “getting wet.” Very sweet.

Bring small towels in a plastic baggie or wipes to clean your face and hands.

Go with a good attitude and Suk San Songkran!

Songkran 2013: Nichada, Siam Square and Pattaya Celebrations in Nichada take place on the main road. My favorite part in years past: the guards at Nichada Park giving you an unexpected “shower!” The guards throwing water are downright gleeful, and it’s so fun to see. There are also truckloads of Nichada revelers spraying everyone in sight. Siam Square downtown is a bit of a madhouse, with lots of young people, live music and WATER. We took the whole family (babies included), and it was a bit much. We’re glad to have done it, but we didn’t stay long. It was mostly locals there, and they were all very friendly and respectful. Celebrations in Pattaya started on April 18. We assumed the festivities were over and were headed home that day. Unfortunately, our luggage on the roof got wet and powdery, and it took us almost two hours to go half a mile on the main road. Fun for those in the know, but not us.

Songkran 2014 First Stop: Chatuchak Market In 2014 we started our celebration at Chatuchak Market. We had visitors in town and were headed that way anyway. It was April 13, the first day of Songkran, and spirits - and water guns - were high. We weren’t sure what to expect and arrived “unarmed,” and the locals were sure glad that we did. The mood was friendly, and LOTS of water was being thrown, shot, sprayed, and splashed. Note: This year, Songkran starts on a Monday, so Chatuchak might not be as lively.

Second Stop: Khao San Road As our young (20-something) visitors were up for the craziness of Khao San Road, we headed over after we left Chatuchak to see what all the buzz was about. Spirits on Khao San Road were definitely, ahem, high. Our then-kindergartener had begged to go, so we brought him. We quickly learned that a western youngster is a target for foreign and local revelers alike. The difference was that the locals seemed very keen to politely rub the white powder on his face, and foreigners liked to aggressively spray him in the face. Fortunately, he was game, but it can be overwhelming for young kids. The streets are packed, and you will get plenty of elbows. Be prepared for more of the Police officers ensure no powder foreigner experience here. buckets are taken onto the main road Foreigners are not as friendly as the locals and will spray you in the face - a lot. Here, lots of the water guns were filled with ice water, which, despite the heat, always made for an initial “AH!” upon every blast. Water guns and plenty of “refill stations” line the roads, so there are plenty of chances to stock up.

A Khao San Road reveler

Final Stop: Krabi We headed to Krabi the next day on April 14, and Songkran celebrations were in full swing. Here, the powder has color, so wear clothes you don’t mind potentially being stained. We had just landed so stayed indoors to avoid the water - we had had enough at that point! But being a beach town, the mood is more relaxed and it’s easy to avoid getting wet.

En route to - or away from! - the fun

The celebrations did create some uncharacteristic traffic. Fortunately our shuttle bus was the only victim. Monique Langer 13

March Tour to the Amazing Dusit Palace

Evidence of Thailand’s rich history can be seen throughout the country. One such historical site is the Dusit Palace in Bangkok. Built between 1897 and 1901, the palace is a large spacious complex of royal residences, mansions and throne halls constructed in the European style. The palace complex was originally called Dusit Garden by King Rama V, and later Dusit Palace by King Rama VI. We visited three of those magnificent structures. The first was Vimanmek Mansion. (Entrance fee: 100 baht) The Mansion, built of golden teak wood, is the world's largest wooden mansion. The large main building consists of two wings at right angles in an "L" shape. Most of the building is three stories high, but the octagonal tower at the end of one wing, which is where King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) actually resided, is four stories. The ground floor is constructed of brick and concrete, but the upper floors are made entirely of golden teakwood. Vimanmek Mansion has 31 exhibition rooms as well as the throne room, bathrooms and bedrooms. A tour within the Mansion is recommended for an insight into the life and times of King Chulalongkorn, who is revered for many accomplishments, including the abolishment of slavery in Thailand. After the mesmerizing tour of Vimanmek Mansion, we went on to see the Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall. (No entrance fee) The Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall exhibits arts and crafts through the Queen's Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupation and Related Technology. Exhibits include traditional weaving and wood carvings, traditional ‘Mudmee’ silk, and ceramics. The last and the most significant building of all was the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. (Entrance fee : 150 baht and 50 baht for compulsory sarong rental. Audio guide was free). This masterpiece monument is a former royal reception hall within Dusit Palace in Bangkok. The building, in Italian Renaissance and Neo Classic style, was designed by Italian architects Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti. Marble from Carrara, Italy and other foreign materials were used. This huge ornate Italian-style building dominates the royal plaza at the end of Ratchadamnoen Avenue, as it was meant to do. The building was built in 1912, and for a time after the 1932 coup which ended absolute monarchy, it housed 18

the Thai parliament. This magnificent structure has a spectacular interior and houses the permanent Arts of the Kingdom exhibit, which displays all the traditional crafts of the country, as cultivated by Her Majesty the Queen. The most significant craft was the ancient technique of using iridescent beetle wings. In the ancient, refined culture of Thailand, it was a common practice to attach beetle wing pieces as an adornment to paintings, textiles and jewelry. The wings of different species of metallic wood-boring beetles were used depending on the region. Their wings were valued for their beautiful and metallic emerald shine. The wings of wood–boring beetles were preferred for decorating clothing (shawls and Sabai cloth) and jewelry in former court circles. Admission : The Palace gr ounds ar e open daily fr om 9.30 am until 4 pm. Admission fee is 100 baht. The ticket is valid for all buildings at the Dusit complex that are open to visitors, except for the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and the Royal Elephants Museum, which require separate entrance fees of 150 baht and 50 baht, respectively. If you have a Grand Palace ticket not older than one week, admission to the Dusit complex is free. Dress Code: Please follow the dr ess code for visiting r oyal buildings, which r equir es long sleeved shirts, long pants or skirts, and covered shoulders. In most of the buildings photography is not allowed; please check the signs at each building. Do not miss this visit. It is one of the best places in Bangkok to experience. Thank you Jesmin and Susanne, for organizing this tour. Vani Alva

ISB Teacher Lands Role in Bangkok Community Theatre’s Jack and the Beanstalk Teacher by Day, Actor by Night. The Adventures Of Mr. A A Nichada local has won multiple roles in the Bangkok Community Theatre’s May production of Jack and the Beanstalk. The multi-tasking thespian is none other than ISB’s drama and dance teacher, Peter Denis Assimakopoulos. Known affectionately as Mr. A by students who find his Greek surname a tongue-twister, Peter hails from Montreal, Canada. After studying professional theatre at Dawson College, he graduated from McGill in 2004 with a teaching degree in physical education. Before coming to Thailand, Pete taught dance in Montreal and drama at the Universal American School in Dubai, the Anglo-American School of Moscow, and Discovery College in Hong Kong. In Jack and the Beanstalk, Peter plays the mime, an important character who moves the story along. “The mime supports the action on stage,” said Peter, who had wanted the role of the mime when he auditioned for the play. As the mime, he gets the chance to morph into a variety of other challenging characters. “Actually at one point I play a cow,” said Peter. Joining the production of Jack and the Beanstalk has added variety to his teaching day. “It has been my goal to jump into something for myself,” he said of his decision to audition and work with Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT). At ISB, Peter teaches drama and Zumba classes, as well as directing two high school plays a year. Last semester it was Hairspray, and this semester it’s a comedy called Zap. Juggling his teaching schedule with rehearsals downtown is no easy task. As soon as he finishes rehearsing Zap with students at 5 pm, Peter rushes downtown to Sukhumvit Soi 33 for rehearsals with Bangkok Community Theatre. He loves working with the five other adult cast members and BCT director/ producer Bonnie Zellerbach. “It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s good to be directed and learn from somebody else.” Peter loves Thailand and looks forward to more roles on stage in community theatre. “I love performing,” he said. He also loves Thai food, culture, and weather. “I never want to see winter again!” said the Montreal native who spent four years teaching in Moscow at one point. He is ready to say good-bye to the harsh winters of those cities. Peter wants to stay in the Land of Smiles, adding, “Hopefully for the rest of my life!” Liz Lu Jack and the Beanstalk, an interactive play for children, will be performed at the DoubleTree by Hilton on Sukhumvit Road, Soi 26, Bangkok, on May 23, 24, 30, 31. For more information, contact beanstalk@bangkokcommunitytheatre.com, or the BCT hotline at 081-741-0703. 22

Bringing Smiles to Myanmar Some families had travelled several days to receive help for their children.

Kids Action for Kids (KAFK) has returned from its first ever mission in Myanmar with wonderful news: instead of 120 targeted cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries, the medical volunteering team, mainly from Operation Smile Thailand, was able to treat 142 children at Nay Pyi Taw hospital during the March 14-20 mission. KAFK volunteers say that they will always remember the needs of the patients and their families. Some of the families had travelled several days to receive help for their children, and some children had been sent alone with a group. The children were heart-breakingly happy to receive small toys, colouring paper and pencils, items that they may not have at home. Operation Smile estimates that 50-60,000 children in Myanmar live with cleft lip and cleft palate deformities. This mission reached and registered only 220 of them, but the team wishes to go back and bring more smiles to Myanmar in the future. The KAFK team is extremely grateful for all donations and will continue its mission in Asia, with the next two trips in Thailand: Korat in June and Sisaket in September. The March Myanmar mission was co-funded by the Norwegian-Thai coalition of Kids Action for Kids (KAFK), Conexus AS, Telenor Myanmar and Benchachinda. Saana Haataja

KidZania: Indoor Career Exploration Park at Siam Paragon Are you tired of staying at home with your kids? Do your kids wonder what they’re going to be when they grow up? Well, as kids, we have an excellent recommendation: just go to Siam Paragon! Go to the 5th floor, and you will find Kidzania, the best place where your kids can learn about themselves. There are many jobs to try out, such as model, doctor, secret agent, police officer, Coca Cola factory worker, pilot, banker, and much more. Kidzania has lots of restaurants. The best part is that when your child walks out of Kidzania, he or she will understand the value of money and will have explored a variety of career options, including possibly their dream job. Our tip: Take your kids to KidZania! Ariah Pinto and Duda Costa KidZania is a Mexican chain of family “edutainment” center s with 16 locations wor ldwide. The first one opened in Mexico City in 1999. Bangkok’s KidZania opened in 2013. Siam Paragon, 5/F. Tel: 0 2683 1888 . Cost: Each visitor pays a single pr ice for aver age visit of 4 hour s. Kids 4 –14 years old: B1,000 on weekends/holidays. Dream World: Exciting Amusement Park in Thanyaburi Dream World is a huge and amazing amusement park, perfect for kids and families. After entering Dream World, you wouldn’t want to come out until you’re exhausted. There are lots of rides such as Bumper Cars, Swinging Viking Boat, Roller Coasters, and so much more. You might even get wet on a couple of rides like Super Splash, and you can get dizzy on other rides like Tornado. Dream World is located in Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani province, Thailand. If you get hungry at Dream World just go to a nearby KFC restaurant. Dream World is worth the long trip out to Thanyaburi, and I highly recommend it if you have kids. Elma Anamali 26

Nice, Clean Park for Kids in Nonthaburi Looking to get the kids to a nice park, but don’t want to fight traffic to get into town? Try the park inside the Nonthaburi government complex on nearby Rattanathibet Road.

As seen on Google Maps

On a recent Tuesday early afternoon, it took less than 15 minutes to get there via Tiwanon Road. Because the park is located within the government complex, there is plenty of parking, and the grounds are very well maintained. The play structures abound, and there are even several areas with exercise equipment along the adjacent lake. When you’re done having fun at the park, just a minute down the road - on the way back to Tiwanon - is Esplanade Complex. We didn’t have time to stop, but there were several fast food restaurants on the ground floor, and an ice skating rink inside.

Park Esplanade

The name of the park on Google Maps is “Makut Rommayasaran Park.” Monique Langer

St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser a Big Success! “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures,” (Irish Proverb), was probably an appropriate quote after the St. Patrick’s Day Party hosted by Bill and Mare Harvey on Saturday, March 21. Over 100,000 baht was raised for the SaiLom Project, which stands for Supporting and Advocating for Inclusive Living Opportunities Ministry. It helps young men with delayed development to participate more in the community while becoming more independent and productive. SaiLom provides training related to basic daily living skills, job skills, and decision making. Thank you to Christian and Nathan Winkles for working the door and selling lots of raffle tickets. It was a wonderful day for Guinness and Kilkenny beer, which was on tap and enjoyed by everyone. By 10 pm it was tapped out. That didn’t stop the party. A few guests were there until 2 am. Another surprise for the evening was Mike Hall who entertained the crowd with Irish pub songs. Thank you to everyone who attended and a big Thank You to Bill and Mare. Denise Warta

Pat Muma’s Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies Longtime Nichada resident Pat Muma says that she gets so many request for these tiny little salted chocolate chip cookies that people have had during her annual Christmas Sale and other times that she thought she’d share the recipe. Thank you, Pat!

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt – omit if using salted butter 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature 3/4 cup (packed) light brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 cup powdered sugar 2 large egg yolks 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups of semisweet chocolate chips OR 8 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate (do not exceed 72% cacao), coarsely chopped Maldon or other flaky sea salt OR table salt Directions: Preheat oven to 350°. Whisk flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium bowl; set aside. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes. Add egg yolks, egg, and vanilla. Beat, scraping down the sides of the bowl, until mixture is pale and fluffy, 4-5 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to low; slowly add dry ingredients, mixing just to blend. Using a spatula, fold in chocolate. For small cookies (okay, tiny cookies) make sure there are two chocolate chips per cookie and enough dough to hold them together – about the size of your middle fingernail. We use 2 parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Sprinkle cookies with salt. Cook between 7 to 9 minutes, depending on your tray. Let cool on wire racks completely. TIP: Between each baking, run cold water on the back of the tray to cool it down before starting the next tray. We always reuse the parchment paper. 36

Enchanting Journey to Dubai

During the recent February break, I went to a place far away from Bangkok that was so amazing, so dazzling, and so sandy. You know if you’re ever thinking of going quad biking in a desert or riding the world’s fastest roller coaster, then you should probably go to Dubai - a child’s dream paradise! Every single day there I wondered how Dubai got its name. Well, Dubai got its name from a bug. Not just any bug, but a grasshopper, and not just any grasshopper but a locust. And though it has a name that comes from a creature that lives in a swamp, it is in fact a beautiful place for people of all ages. My family chose to fly Thai Airways, which turned out to be a decent flight that was about seven and a half hours long and covered a whopping 4,866 kilometers. In Dubai there are hundreds of amazing looking hotels that you can stay in, but we stayed with family friends, which made our trip more memorable. And there are so many cool places to visit like Dubai Mall, which is the world’s largest mall, and they even have an aquarium with great white sharks. They also have all kinds of fun things to do there like an airplane simulator where I got to fly a plane. And not just that they have a great indoor amusement park called Sega Republic. Dubai has almost the best of everything in the world like the fastest roller coaster, the world’s number one indoor amusement park. It also has the world’s tallest building called Burj Khalifa where you can go up 163 floors. And that’s not all – there is also skydiving, skiing and ATV riding in the desert. This is probably why it’s such a popular tourist destination. On day one we went to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Tournament where we watched players like Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic play and sadly lose! We were lucky since you can only watch these 40

Travel: matches at this time of the year. Dubai is very famous for its Skydiving experience. Unfortunately there is an age restriction for the same. You have to be at least 14 years old to skydive. On day two we did something that comes close to Skydiving - called IFly where there are air vents that blow air up to 500 kilometers per hour and make you float in the air. The whole experience of flying was amazing. On day three I went to Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, which is around an hour and a half drive from Dubai depending on the traffic. Ferrari World is also the world’s number one indoor amusement park. In Ferrari World I got to experience riding the world’s fastest rides. I also learned how Ferraris are made. It was a fun filled day. Abu Dhabi, which is the capital city of United Arab Emirates, has a beautiful grand Mosque called the Sheikh Zayed Mosque which my parents visited during our stay in Dubai. My parents told me that this is a beautiful and massive building with the world’s largest carpet covering the floor of the mosque and various chandeliers and amazing decorations. On day four we went to Dubai Mall, which is the biggest mall in the world and it’s a shopping paradise for adults. I spent my time in the indoor amusement park/gaming center called Sega Republic while my mother and sister were shopping. There I went on a ride that spun me around and turned me sideways and upside down. After these exciting rides, I went to fly an airplane in the Emirates Airbus simulator with my dad. Later we went to see the musical fountain, which attracts many tourists. There are eateries where you can dine while enjoying the beautiful water fountain and the music. We really enjoyed the local food. Middle Eastern cuisine is very traditional and has a very rich and unique taste. We went to a local restaurant called Reem al Bawadi in the famous Dubai Marina area. I enjoyed shawarma, hummus, and falafels and had some interesting desserts called Umm ali. On day five we were supposed to go for a very popular Desert Safari but unfortunately it got cancelled due to a big sand storm. So instead we went quad biking on the dunes the following day. It was an amazing experience riding the big four wheelers on the sand. After I got the hang of the controls I really enjoyed zipping up and down the sand dunes! I wish we had some more time to visit the other attractions such as Ski Dubai, which is an indoor Ski resort (in the middle of a desert!) and the ‘Water Park’ where you can play with dolphins. Even after getting back to Bangkok our minds were still filled with the fun we had in Dubai. This was truly a trip to remember forever!

NNR Donates Diapers, Medicine and Food to Shelter Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach (NNR) is a long-time supporter of the Nonthaburi Reception Home for the Destitute, a shelter serving more than 400 homeless residents. Since many residents are elderly and/or handicapped and in need of adult diapers, NNR recently made a special donation of adult diapers to the Home. The shelter is one of eight local charities that receive regular donations from NNR. With funds from NNR’s regular donation, volunteers also purchased medicine and medical supplies for the shelter’s clinic. NNR also makes regular donation of food, such as fresh fruit, to supplement the residents’ basic meals. NNR volunteers visit the shelter on a regular basis, providing wound care, activities, and general support. NNR also works closely with teens from the Elder Care Club to provide activities for residents at the Home. Interested in volunteering at the shelter? Charity: Prison Visits

Thani Talk ~April 2015

Volunteers Bring Joy to Foreign Inmates in Thai Prisons Prison visits were initiated many years ago by the Chaengwattana Community Church (CCC) with the purpose of offering friendship and encouragement to foreign women prisoners. The program grew beyond the CCC and now comprises about a dozen volunteers. Our prisoner friends are all foreigners in Thailand, with no family or social network locally. Most of them face long sentences. Some are remembered by their families, some not. Some are lucky to have embassies to look after them. Some are not that lucky. For those, we are truly their main contacts with the world. In the words of volunteer Val Mowat: “It took me a good few months of nervous indecision to eventually give prison visiting a try. After a couple of visits, I started feeling more comfortable. The positive attitude displayed by both ladies I visit encourages me, as much as my visits encourage them.” My Filipino lady LOVES to receive popular magazines, especially the “Hello!” celebrity happenings magazine! If you don’t know what to do with your old “Hello” issues, please let me know. I can have them passed on to her through her embassy. For the past 2 and ½ years, Susan Curtis has been visiting South African Eugene Noboto, a prisoner at Lard Yao Prison for the last 18 years. Eugene has a strong faith. Why she ever got involved with drug muling is beyond understanding, but she now feels God put her in a Thai prison for a reason.

She has had plenty of ups and downs over the years, but during visits, she is upbeat, encouraging, and willing to sing a song she composed herself. She is quite dear. She is active in the prison church, and when she is released she would like to study counselling.

Eugene Noboto Nicole Cano has been visiting Ekaterina Ilychov, from Uzbekistan, for three years. The weekly visits have turned into monthly visits following new restrictions by the prison administration. Nicole recounts: “Over the years I have become Facebook friends with her mother. This allows us to exchange real time messages about Ekaterina and how she is doing. As a mother I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult it is for her mother to not be able to come and visit her daughter. Ekaterina was arrested 14 years ago for drugs. She has not seen her mother or sister since she was arrested. Her family 46

Charity: Prison Visits

Nicole Cano (left) and Ekaterina Ilychov has not forgotten her and they are anxiously awaiting her return. Ekaterina is hoping to be released in April! During visits, we talk about everything, from her faith in God to her family and current events, including pop culture and movies. One week I went in all excited to tell her the news about Prince William and Kate’s baby, George. To my surprise and bafflement, Ekatarina got suddenly very upset with me. I had no idea what could have possibly upset her. Then Ekatarina looked at me and said ‘you didn’t even tell me they were pregnant!’ My visits with Ekaterina really help me to put my life back into perspective! Living in Nichada is easy and we forget the challenges people face every day." Susan Curtis sums it up: “Some people think that going to the prison is difficult emotionally, but I always leave more encouraged than when I arrived.” “I think this is a statement all of us who visit prisoners could agree with.,” said Susan. “In my personal experience, each visit makes me grateful for the wonderful gift of freedom. I believe our visits help alleviate some of the pain of their harsh life inside. In the words of my Togolese prisoner friend, Patricia: “It is a horrible life. I could not live it if I did not know someone cares.” Pascale Kervyn If you would like to volunteer to visit prisoners, please contact Susan Curtis at: cscecurtis@gmail.com 47

Restaurant Review

Thani Talk ~April 2015

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon ‘One of the Best Meals in Bangkok’ Well, having eaten in quite a few restaurants in Bangkok, I might have to step out over the parapet and suggest that this MAY be the best food I have been served in this city awash with great eateries. Quite an announcement! But it is very rare to find yourself in a place that hits the spot from all the ambience, service AND food perspectives. And this certainly did it for me! A very special, elegant restaurant decorated in reds and blacks, lacquer and wood - which makes it sound a bit ‘underworld’ and maybe even a little cheesy? But no. Whoever designed this ‘conceptual’ restaurant did it with skill. It is gorgeous, and definitely a place to take your loved ones for a celebration. Expensive, but worth it. As its name suggests, it is French cuisine, provided by experienced and decorated chefs, GM and sommelier. It is authentic to a T. The chef previously worked in L’Atelier in London, where he gained two Michelin stars. Prior to that he worked in Paris in another of their two-Michelin starred restaurants.

Let’s hope his luck follows him to Bangkok; it is definitely worthy of praise. The food is sublime. We had the ‘Tasting Portion’ menu which allowed us to sample a larger selection of dishes served from the a la carte menu, but served in smaller dishes. A wonderful idea! In all we had eight dishes (which, for anyone who knows me, sounds impossible ...). Starting with an offering of one of their Pièce de Résistance was the Amuse Bouche, a foie gras mousse with port wine reduction and parmesan foam (stunning!) Other dishes included: 

La Dorade – Sea Bream ‘ceviche’ on top of fresh and creamy cilantro avocado: wonderful!

Le Piquillo – Piquillo with smoked eggplant and tuna belly confit: yum!

L’oeuf de Poule – Crispy poached egg on a fine parmesan mousse and Iberian ham: super!

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon MahaNakhon CUBE, 5th Floor 96 Narathiwas Ratchanakharin Rd Silom

Le Black Cod – Black Cod (!) served with Malabar pepper sauce, pak choy and coconut foam: not my favourite.

L’Agneau de Lait de Pyrenees – Milk-fed lamb cutlets from Pyrenees with fresh thyme: sorry to say they were scrummy.

Le Fois Gras – Foie gras terrine served with toasted country bread: against my principles, but was delicious :/

And to finish we had THE most delicious sorbets of green apple, lemon and basil, with a stunning blackcurrant lace decoration, on top of strawberries and berries: completely wonderful.

With wine and choccies, the bill came to 7800 baht. Yes, hugely expensive, but for a wonderful treat, it was hugely worth it. Sally Elliott
