NNR’s 20th Anniversary

NNR @ 20 A Look Back in Time

International School Bangkok, the hub of activities for our community, used to be located on Sukhumvit Road Soi 15 downtown. In 1988 the school board approved plans, designed by architect Dr. Sumet Jumsai, for a new campus in Nonthaburi. In these 1991 photos courtesy of ISB, construction was underway at what was then referred to as the Samakkee campus. The new $25 million campus was designed to accommodate an initial 2,000 students. The school moved from Bangkok to Pakkred in January 1992. As the expatriate community surrounding the school grew, NNR, founded and run by volunteers, also expanded its offering of community services, including this monthly newsletter. Thani Talk, distributed for free, now has a circulation of 1,400. Happy 20th, NNR!

Thank You Sarah! NNR Social Chairperson Passes the Baton Sarah Glaze, the NNR Social Chair who has organized fantastic programs such as coffee mornings, happy hours, and amazing fundraisers including NNR’s St. Patrick’s Day party and the recent Fashion Show, is going to take a much-deserved break from her NNR duties. Thank you, Sarah, for bringing us such wonderful socials! We join Sarah in welcoming NNR’s new social chair, Denise Warta I am British. I have lived in Thailand for 14 years, just entering my 15th year. Usual story, thought I was coming for 2 years. I have two children, 16-year-old Anna and 14-year-old Nicholas, both at Harrow school. My husband David works in Tokyo and travels extensively, so I frequently feel like I am a single mother! I joined the NNR committee about three and a half years ago as I am by nature very sociable and wanted to meet people from all backgrounds and nationalities within our community . My aim was to arrange a variety of social events to appeal to a broad range of our international community. I figured that there are many women's groups in the wider Bangkok community and so introduced more happy hours and evening events to make the NNR more accessible to different groups within our community, and the NNR social calendar has snowballed from there. I am 'retiring' as I have other areas in my life that need focus over the next couple of years and I want to spend more time in London. Equally I think that it is important to have new blood and new ideas. Never say never , who knows, I may return. I'm delighted that I went out on a high note with the Fashion Show! I know that Denise will do a terrific job and I am always happy to help. Sarah Denise Warta is an American with three children: Aubrey, a sophomore at Creighton University in Nebraska; Madison, a sophomore at ISB; and Carter, a 6th grader at ISB. Her husband Chuck’s work for Cargill brought the family to Thailand 2 years ago. Denise said she decided to take over as NNR’s social chair because “I liked that it is a group of women from all over the world that does wonderful things for the Nonthaburi community. A very fun group of ladies.” Welcome aboard, Denise! 4

Tour Tales

October Tour Tales: A Glimpse of Ayutthaya .

I love exploring ancient ruins and learning about history. NNR’s October excursion was a half day trip, and it took about an hour to get to Ayutthaya, a former capital of Siam. My favorite part was definitely the ancient ruins and the reclining Buddha- amazing sights! Visually rich and architecturally astounding, Ayuthaya is a destination that inspires. It is also a veritable treasure-house for photographers. Our first visit was to Wat Phra Mongkon Bophit. It is the serene gold leaf covered Buddha. Outside, children were holding bird cages and praying in acts of merit-making. Walking past vendors selling postcards of Buddha images, we approached The Royal Palace Ruins. However, looking around and walking through empty spaces, it was evident that not much had survived, and the ruins were burned to the ground. There are memories, dreams, and poetry you can only imagine! The most tranquil smiling Buddha image is the reclining Buddha, which is 37 meters long and 8 meters high. His head rests on a lotus bud and in the crook of his arm there are offerings of flower garlands and incense. His skin is shimmery from being rubbed by gold-leaf bearing visitors. He is draped in a bright yellow robe, brilliant against the sky. Altogether, we experienced the praying ceremony with the offerings, lotus flower, candle and a golden leaf to stick on the Buddha image. Next was Wat Mahatat. Upon entering, you walk among blackened brick and ruins. Around the corner was the incredibly famous image of the Buddha's head entwined in the roots of a fig tree. The last stop on our expedition before lunch was Wat Chaiwatthanaram. It was a royal temple where the king and his successors performed religious ceremonies. The ruins on the green grass transported us to ancient times. Thank you very much to our fantastic guides Susan and Jesmin for organising this NNR trip to Ayutthaya. Hope to be together again very soon. Cigdem Koc 16

Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar Returns to Nichada on November 29 The first weekend of Advent, Kids Action for Kids (KAFK) will bring the true Scandinavian Christmas spirit to Nichada once again in the form of Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar at Nichada Plaza on Saturday, November 29. Kids Action for Kids organizes its heartwarming Christmas event for the second time to raise funds to conduct surgeries for children born with cleft lips, cleft palates and facial deformities in Thailand and soon in Myanmar. Kids, high school students, and moms have been busy for months preparing in order to make it a memorable day for all families. “This year our Christmas Bazaar will be even bigger and better. On top of making sure the raffle prizes are continuously wonderful, we have expanded the selection both on the Crafts & Gifts stall and the Christmas Café, and we have yet more high school students organizing fun activities for the whole family,” says Bazaar Leader Anne Gry Ranchil. “The Crafts & Gifts will include beautifully packed Christmas cookies and lots of different all-so-elegant Christmas decorations, including elves, lanterns, ornaments, even DIY alternatives and so on, and our cozy Christmas Café will serve everyone’s appetite with delicious Scandinavian snacks, cakes, glögg and much more.” The KAFK ISB High School Club with its 20 members will work at the different stalls of the bazaar and make sure all visitors will be happy and entertained. “We are super excited to participate in the work with the Christmas Bazaar, which will hopefully raise funds to finance a great number of the coming surgeries. Another important fundraiser for us is coming in the spring time, the annual Charity Triathlon,” says Anders Brekke from ISB KAFK Club. A Christmas Bazaar would not be picture perfect, of course, without a beloved visitor. Therefore, KAFK will bring again this year Santa to Nichada, and you can even have a Christmas photo taken with him! Before the Bazaar, something starts already in early November: Raffle Ticket Sales. So don’t be surprised if a kid comes to your door and tells you with a smile that you can win hotel stays, iPhone 5S, a painting, skin care products, branded porcelain and other fabulous prizes just by buying Kids Action for Kids Christmas raffle tickets. You will find KAFK Christmas raffle ticket sales also at Villa Market throughout this month and the last raffle tickets will be sold at the bazaar. Stay tuned on Facebook and look for banners around Nichada for more detailed information! Submitted by Saana Haataja

About KAFK One out of every 500 babies in Thailand is born with cleft lip or cleft palate. These kids are often unable to eat, speak, socialize and smile, and their families can often not afford to pay for an operation. Kids Action for Kids (KAFK) organization works in close cooperation with Operation Smile Thailand (OST), which takes care of the medical part, and DTAC, which matches every Thai baht it raises. Since its inception in 2009, KAFK has conducted more than 500 surgeries in Thailand. Currently KAFK is in process of completing 120 surgeries at Maharat Nakorn Ratchasima Hospital in Korat Province. In 2015 KAFK’s goal is to raise funds to double the number of surgeries. KAFK will continue with 120 new surgeries in Thailand, and enter Myanmar and target 120 surgeries there, too.

Thai Culture: Loy Krathong

Thani Talk ~November 2014

Loy Krathong: Festival of Lights Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง), sometimes spelled Loy Kratong or Loi Kratong, is a colourful festival held every year on the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai Lunar Calendar. In 2014, the full moon falls on Thursday, November 6, 2014, but in many places (including Chiang Mai) the main celebration will be from Wednesday, November 5, to Friday, November 7, 2014. This Thai Festival is held all over the country, but there are particularly beautiful celebrations held in Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, where the celebrations take place over several days. Celebrations are now held throughout Thailand including Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, as well as parts of Myanmar (Shan State) and Laos. History of Loy Krathong It is believed that Loy Krathong is an ancient Brahmanic or Indic festival. Originally it was a ceremony where people paid their respects to three different gods known as Phra I-Suan (Shiva), Phra Narai (Vishnu) and Phra Phrom (Brahma). People would make lanterns using candles and paper, which would then be displayed in the homes of royalty, rich people or high-ranking officials. One hundred and fifty years ago, at the urging of King Mongkut (Rama IV), it was later adopted by Buddhists as a ceremony to honor the Buddha. In this new version people would make various kinds of lanterns, which would then be donated to the temples. At this time people would say prayers to ask that their wishes and hopes for the future be fulfilled. Of course, many of the former beliefs are still retained by some Thai people. The lights that are floated down the rivers are meant to symbolize the drifting away of bad luck and misfortune, but for many Thai people it is also an opportunity to honor the goddess of water, Phra Mae Kong Ka (พระแม่คงคา). Krathong – Floating Lights The krathong is a small floating offering about 20 centimeters in diameter. Traditionally this is made from the leaves and wood of the banana tree. The raft is decorated with flowers, a candle and an incense stick. People often leave a small coin in the krathong, and occasionally they will leave a lock of the hair or even nail clippings. On the night of the full moon people will light the candle and the joss stick, and float their krathong down the river or waterway. This is a way that bad fortune can be discarded and made to float away. Thousands of these Krathong will float down the river making for a beautiful and moving spectacle. Usually, at the same time, thousands of Khom Loy (Sky Lanterns) will be drifting across the sky, so that the night sky mirrors the spectacle on the water. Almost constant firework displays, and the splashes of small boys diving in to collect the coins in the krathongs, complete the picture, and make for an unforgettable experience. Thank you to Khun Jentana at Jentana & Associates for providing this article on Loy Krathong. Khun Jentana is a Thai language instructor in and around Nichada. Bangkok Food Tours: A Delicious Way to Explore Bangkok I recently had the pleasure of attending two Bangkok Food Tours in one food-filled week. The first was a nighttime tour by tuk tuk, sampling various foods all over Bangkok. My husband and I had a lot of fun talking to new people from all over the world, while tasting our way through some delightful local dishes - some new to us even after nearly two years in Bangkok. The second was a morning tour. A group of ladies organized a private tour so that we could designate our own start and end times. Any size group can select the private tour option - you will just pay slightly more than the regular rate. Both tours were totally different, yet equally as informative and fun. I won’t ruin the surprise by telling the food and places visited, but I will say it is definitely worth doing. There are several tours available at different times of day. There's also a bike option, as well as one offered in Chiang Mai. This would also be a great tour for visitors who are interested in food and culture. Bangkok’s ‘Pink Park Village’ Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC) Foundation’s Hospice and Convalescence Project for the Under-Privileged By Khunying Finola Chatamra Hon. Advisor, QSCBC Coordinator, QSCBC Slum Project The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC) began its work in 1994, raising funds and building a medical team over a long process that took several years. The centre officially opened in 2005, and the non-profit QSCBC Foundation was opened in 2007 to support the work of the centre. The QSCBC established a slum outreach project throughout Bangkok nearly fifteen years ago, educating the poorest women and screening them for breast and cervical cancer. The work has revealed a desperate need for a convalescence and hospice home for the under-privileged. When the QSCBC treats these patients, so often they cannot be discharged, because the conditions where they live are appalling. To compound the problem, acute care beds urgently needed by new cases become blocked. Sadly at times, patients are referred to the QSCBC too late, and they have nowhere to go when they need a clean place to pass away pain free and with dignity. Sister Joan Evans, one of the many workers and NGOs working in the slums, with whom the QSCBC closely works, said that before the QSCBC came to help these women, all she could do in the end stages was “to give The women and homes of women invited to join a bottle of rum to help with the pain.’’ the QSCBC Screening Project for Breast and Cervical Cancer

The ‘Pink Park Village’, will be a refuge, open to women from all over the country and hopefully, once established, for children too. The land in Minburi and the engineering and architectural plans have already been donated. The vision is to build Thailand’s first and only non-profit inpatient care centre, offering hospice and convalescence facilities, based in small homes, which will cater to 4-6 patients in a non-institutionalized setting. The Pink Park Village will also offer day care and act as a national training unit for medical and nursing staff. The land is already being partially cultivated for rice and other organic produce by farmers, to ensure this will be a self-sustaining project and, crucially, one that involves the local community. regional centre for breast cancer. Its founder and Honorary Director, Dr. Kris Chatamra MBBS (London), FRCS (England), MD (London), was a senior clinician in the UK, where he was based for thirty years. As an internal examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons and with a large body of research to his name, he had the background to build up the QSCBC from an idea to fruition. The facility offers state-of-the-art equipment and the most modern approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and research into a disease which has become Thailand’s biggest cancer risk for Thai women, statistically affecting one in ten women across a life time. It is hoped that this experience can develop the Pink Park Village into a regional benchmark for hospice and convalescence, looking after the weakest in society. How to Help The Pink Park Village and Outreach Projects both need funding and corporate support to continue offering help to those most in need. Community Update

Update on Nichada Thani’s Current Projects Scott Roman, Nichada Thani’s Customer Relations Manager, provides Thani Talk with an update on current projects in various stages of development. Nichada Thani receives many inquiries each month from residents concerning new developments within the community. We'd like to share with the entire community the most sought after information. Nichada and Natakorn Lake Condo buildings will be ready for occupation by March 1, 2015. Model units will be available to view by December 8, 2014. These units are available for rent only. The breakdown of the units are as follows:  7 - 1 bed /1 bath units; 84-168 square meters  60 - 2 bed /2 bath units; 120-131 square meters  72 - 3 bed/4 bath units; 176-193 square meters  20 - 4 bedroom units; 380-577 square meters, some with 5 baths and the two-story penthouses with 6 baths and private pools.

Artist’s rendering of Nichada and Natakorn condominium buildings. Nichada and Natakorn are the names of the owners’ daughter and son, respectively.

The Prestige I will be completed by March 2015. Currently 57 of 81 units are complete and 56 are occupied. The Prestige II with 63 units will be completed by December 2015. The lot between The Terrace and Garden Condo will be developed as "Green Park," a housing community consisting of 37 "The Prestige" style homes with community pool and clubhouse and three 3-story lake fronting homes with private pools. Lakeview Residence, a community of 6 homes - 4 in the style of "The Tropical Residence" and 2 in the style of "Veranda" located near Lakeview Suites - will be completed in December 2015. The homes in this community will be for sale and for rent. Concerning our plans for Nichada Club, we are looking to sign an anchor tenant for the former Villa site before renovations begin at Nichada Club. Our plan for Nichada Club is to fill the open units with businesses geared towards sports and healthy living. The Nichada Club restaurant will move to Nichada and Natakorn Lake Condo when finished and negotiations are underway with a party to lease the current restaurant space to another food service provider. Travel

Tibetan Cultural Adventure in Western Yunnan Province, China The Songstam Circuit is a set of five small lodges spread amidst the rugged, picturesque landscape of western China. Known as the Three Parallel Rivers area, the headwaters of the Salween, Yangtze and Mekong Rivers carve these Himalayan foothills into fertile river valleys. Here is a travel blog about our Yunnan Tibetan adventure. In April 2012, my husband Frank and I made a trip to Yunnan, China to join our daughter who was working in Kunming. Frank had read about the Songstam Circuit, and it sounded like a fabulous trip to visit an ethnically diverse area of China close to Thailand. These lodges, founded by a wellknown Beijing filmmaker, Baimo Dorjie, have earned international accolades. On retreats to his hometown of Zongdian, he decried the lack of proper hotels. Around the same time, to boost tourism, China officially renamed Zongdian as Shangri-La after the mythical mountain paradise made famous in films (1933 and 1973) inspired by James Hilton’s 1933 book, Lost Horizon. This place truly is a case of life imitating art! Hollywood aside, “Shangri-La” in Tibetan dialect means “to have the sun and moon in your heart” and more closely describes how the locals regard their town as a spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. Indeed the flagship Songstam Retreat is built on a hillside overlooking the palatial and mysterious Songzanlin Monastery, the largest of its kind outside of Tibet. The people here ironically do not suffer the same religious oppression as those in Tibet Autonomous Region. Shangri-La is easily reached by a 50-minute flight from Kunming, itself only a two-hour flight from Bangkok. China Eastern and China Southern both have daily flights from Kunming to Deqen Airport in Shangri-La. I took Thai Airways to Kunming and went to Shangri-la by land via Dali and Lijiang. The other lodges on the circuit are Benzilan, Tacheng, Cizhong and Meili, all of which are accessible by paved roads and located between 1.5 and 4 hour drives apart. In some cases these modern roads follow the ancient footpaths of the “Tea Horse Road” when Chinese mule caravans carried 38

Travel Pu’er tea to trade for warhorses in Lhasa. We only had time to travel to Benzilan and Meili Lodges. April was early spring in the idyllic farming community surrounding Shangri-La. The women wearing their bright fuchsia head wraps were out in their fields driving yaks to plow the bare earth. Our room in the Songstam Retreat was uber comfortable with a down-filled duvet, hammered copper bathroom fixtures and a sitting area with a fireplace. The impeccable service provided 24-hour hot water, wifi and locally sourced organic produce in the restaurant.

At Benzilan Lodge, we were invited into a family home in a nearby village. Seated in their brightly painted kitchen warmed by a wood stove, the elderly homeowners served us yak butter tea, definitely an acquired taste! Etiquette demands that each person’s tea bowl is constantly refilled after each sip so there was no such thing as a “no thank you” helping! Tea is fortified with the addition of butter and salt to supplement their diet and provide energy for their harsh lifestyle. My awkward attempts to remember Chinese pleasantries just amplified the charm of this memorable, cultural experience! We also fit in a brief visit to Meili Lodge, another 3-hour drive from Benzilan. The highway curved through mountain passes often along viaducts clinging precariously to sheer rock faces. No wonder Tibetans drape these places with colorful prayer flags! The view from the lodge’s terrace towards Tibet was a panorama of 6000 m snowcapped peaks. For more information, go to http://www.songtsam.com/en/the-songtsam-circuit.

Restaurant Review

Thani Talk ~November 2014

Restaurant Review: Water Library in Central Embassy There are two reasons to go to Water Library in Central Embassy, the very upmarket new shopping mall near Central Chidlom: one is that the restaurant itself is super, and the other is to be awed by the building design of Central Embassy itself. Side note - If you are interested in urban architecture, design concepts and almost museum beauty of a modern building, I would encourage you to step inside and look up! Light pours in and illuminates the twisting nature of the supremely modern space; it is incredibly impressive. Its design was shortlisted in the ‘World Architecture Festival’ of 2009. I encourage you to look it up www.worldbuildingsdirectory.com! (More than ‘just’ a restaurant review this week!) Water Library is the latest of several sites in Bangkok whose consistency in quality varies in my opinion. However this one and Chonburi Square are well worth a visit. Based on a French Brasserie model, it exudes charm and style. It accomplishes a somewhat difficult task to achieve in a shopping mall – even a beautifully designed one – by managing to help you forget that shops surround you, and definitely soothes. The décor is typically ‘Parisian Brasserie’, with a cozy, muted feel – this one has a Parisian café type entrance which beckons, then wander in to some sort of old world library for a casually elegant meal. Move in further for a more sophisticated dinner, Bangkok style, with outdoor terrace Water Library and skyline waiting to entertain. Central Embassy, Level 5 Tel: 02-160-5893 The food is excellent quality, as it should be Website: www.waterlibrary.com as it is overseen by a chef of much global Open: 10am (drinks only) experience – some of which has been within 11.30am – 10pm (Dining, last order Michelin starred restaurants.
