Dear Member, Of course, having an expert and knowledgeable staff is important, but there would not be a need for the staff of the organization, in this case the Trucking Association of New York, if not for the members. TANY is the voice of trucking in New York – but it’s the members who give the organization that voice! While TANY is already a strong organization, like everything else, we can do better and get stronger. In my mind there are two main things that make TANY strong: member engagement and the number of members. In order to make sure TANY is adequately serving the membership, it is important that the membership is engaged and informing the TANY staff of their needs. As I have previously reported, TANY has renewed its focus on providing more member programs at the regional level. Since the beginning of 2017, each of TANY’s five regions has been holding either monthly or bi-monthly planning meetings. These meetings have been well attended by the membership and have resulted in nearly double the amount of events and meetings scheduled in 2017 as were held in 2016. If you haven’t yet been able to make one of these meetings I strongly encourage you to attend when possible. The meeting schedule appears in each week’s Friday Final. In addition to planning events, these regional meetings also serve as a great forum to share ideas and discuss any issues of concern. TANY staff is present at every regional meeting. In order to strengthen membership engagement, TANY is developing more ways for members to interact and speak with TANY staff, without having to attend a meeting. The TANY board of directors recently approved the development of a TANY mobile application (app) and TANY staff just signed a contract with a developer to move forward with this initiative. Our goal is to have the app available for members during the 3rd quarter of 2017. This will provide a quick and easy way to stay up-to-date on association events and activities, as well as interact with TANY staff. Stay tuned for more information on this in the near future! As with any organization, membership growth is critical to the success of TANY. TANY’s Director of Membership Relations, George Damoretcki, is dedicated to growing the TANY family of members. George does a great job, but in truth our best resource for new members is current members. Who better to speak about the benefits of being a member of TANY, than a company that is already a member? With this thought in mind, TANY developed the “Sponsor-a-Member” program in 2014, which has proven to be incredibly successful. The program encourages existing continued on page 6

LEADING
THE PACK
In this fast-paced world, carriers can easily feel like they’re running laps; circling the track, trying to keep pace, without anything really changing. But being in the middle of the pack isn’t always enough. Getting ahead or dropping behind by a nose here or there can make all the difference in a victorious finish or a meek showing.
Join the Trucking Association of New York for our 50th Annual Conference & Membership Meeting from September 25-27, 2017, in Watkins Glen, NY, as we discuss Leading the Pack. The event will take place at the Harbor Hotel, overlooking Seneca Lake- just minutes away from Watkins Glen Internationalproviding an exciting and scenic setting to examine how to survive and thrive in this ever-changing industry. The event will kick off with a Monday evening reception at The Glen Club at Watkins Glen International, the storied auto racing track steeped in history, having hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix for twenty years, multiple NASCAR Cup Series, and the
IndyCar Series, among other races. In true Watkins Glen style, the reception will include rides around the track in a pace car for attendees.
The green flag will wave Tuesday morning with a session from ATA President & CEO Chris Spear. Since his appointment to his current role in July of 2016, significant changes have taken place in Washington, D.C. Spear will offer his insight on the climate in Washington regarding the trucking industry, how it has changed in the past year, and what to expect in the coming years. Workplace safety is a simple form of preventative maintenance which can save carriers millions of dollars. Safety Expert Brad Gardner will run under the yellow flag, discussing his personal experience with an industrial accident that caused him to lose part of his arm, and focus on what he has learned in his 24 years of safety experience: that every accident can be prevented, safety is everyone’s responsibility, and that one employee is all it takes to stop the domino effect.
Numerous topics which may be inadvertently governing your speed will also be examined including workplace security, cyber security (including how to keep your vehicle systems from being hacked), employee wellness and fatigue management. New York-specific topics will also be covered such as the impact of the recent workers’ compensation reform, employment law and what should matter to you, what the association achieved legislatively in 2017 and what it is looking to accomplish in 2018. Additionally, the association’s newest online technologies designed to help members keep up with the pack will be unveiled. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn what’s ahead for the trucking industry so you can pin the speedometer on the straightaways and still slow down for a turn in the track without losing ground. Look for registration information on this important event in upcoming Friday Final issues and at www.nytrucks.org.

Step Van Competition
Gerald Thompson of XPO Logistics, and FedEx Express were this year’s big winners at the 58th Annual New York State Truck Driving Championships and Step Van Competition, held in Syracuse on June 9 and 10.
The competition included a written exam, pre-trip inspection, and road course where drivers navigated and were scored on six obstacles or skill challenges. Eighty eight drivers competed in nine vehicle classes including straight truck, 3-axle, 4-axle, 5-axle, twins, tank, flatbed, sleeper berth and step van. All classes but step van were eligible for the Grand Champion Trophy. The driving course proved to be a challenge this year, with average course scores 40 points lower than last year. Thompson earned the Grand Champion trophy driving twins, with an overall score of 371 out of a possible 485, placing him 160 points above the average score. He effectively crushed his competition, as the next highest overall score was 316. Thompson will join the eight other drivers who finished first in their classes at the National Truck Driving Championships in Orlando, Florida in August. This marks Thompson’s 7th trip to the national competition, where he has placed second in his class, three times. The FedEx Express team took home the team trophy at the event with a total average score of 248. Each driver in the five-member team also took home an individual trophy, with one driver finishing first in his class, one finishing second, and the remaining three finishing third in their classes.
