WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BANK’S CLOCK? Once Upon a Time, there was a four-sided clock on the northeast corner of 23rd and Market Streets, in front of the house that had been converted for use as the Camp Hill National Bank. It was very helpful to those who didn’t wear a watch, or whose hands were too busy to push up their sleeve to read their watch! (It’s pictured left of center, above the heads of parading 1940’s children) When the bank built its new construction at 21st and Market c. 1955, the clock was relocated as well.

There, the four clock faces were completely overhauled, and installed in this grand memorial in Boiling Springs on July 4th, 1957. The next time you are in Boiling Springs, notice the Memorial Tower at the foot of Children’s Lake. Take a closer look -- those are “our” clock faces! Are you old enough to remember the green square border around the four faces?

Public works & Codes STREET SWEEPING • Street sweeping ENDS week of October 17th • Sweeping will continue after that date on an as needed basis only. • Sweeping takes place the day after your regular trash collection day on the second and forth weeks of the month. • Please avoid placing grass clippings, tree limbs, or any other debris in the street. This can cause damage to the sweeper and create down-time for the operator, resulting in an inability to maintain or complete the schedule. • Property owners are also asked to keep trees along the curb line trimmed to a minimum of 14 feet above the street so the sweeper can work close to the curb without damage to the machine. • Please check the Public Works page on the Borough’s website for updates as the year progresses. PAVING UPDATE The schedule for paving in Camp Hill Borough will be available on our website in the coming weeks. LEAF COLLECTION • Fall leaf collection BEGINS Monday October 24th • Leaf collection ENDS on or about December 9. This may change due to early winter weather events. • Leaf collection is the day after your trash collection day, weather permitting. • Leaves should be windrowed along the curb or edge of the roadway. • Do not place branches, grass clippings, rocks or any other debris in leaf piles. This can cause catastrophic damage to the leaf collection machinery or personnel. • Do not leave cars parked along the street on the day of leaf collection. This may prevent staff from collecting the leaves around the vehicles. • Remember to keep all trees along the curb line trimmed to a minimum of 14 feet above
the street so the equipment can operate along the curb line. Areas with obstructions will not be done to prevent costly equipment damage. • Please check the Public Works page on the Borough’s website for any updates that may occur.
CODES ENFORCEMENT SHADE TREES • Where a tree is along the right of way within the borough, it shall be considered a shade tree. Any cutting, removing, or replanting requires a shade tree permit • Shade trees are the property owner’s responsibility. Be sure the tree is not impeding the sidewalk or street. We require an 8’ vertical clearance of shade trees over the sidewalk. The vertical clearance from the curb to 6’ toward the street requires 14’ of clearance. From that point 18’ of vertical clearance is to be met above the middle of the street. • Tress that don’t fall within the right of way but still impede the streets or sidewalks are subjected to the clearance regulations • Trees that do not meet the definition of a shade trees but are extends over onto your property doesn’t get recognized as a code matter. The owner has the right to cut back the adjoining tree back to their property line. This falls as a civil matter between neighbors for costs. SIGN PERMITS Before any sign is put up promoting a business or event, be sure to check the sign ordinance. Only a handful of signs are excluded from permits so be sure to check and apply for the signs prior to placement. Where signs are fastened to a structure, a building permit may also be required. Where off-premises signs are planted throughout the borough, they will be removed. Signs are not to be placed on street signs or utility equipment.
No One Should Be Hungry! The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will be giving food to all qualified Camp Hill residents in need of food assistance at the Christian Life Assembly Church, 2645 Lisburn Rd. in Lower Allen Twp. Please stop by between 9am – 12 noon on the following Tuesdays: September 13th, October 11th, November 8th Deember 23th and January 10th. A utility bill from your residence is the only requirement. Please stop by if your family is in need!

Clubs and Events DUMPSTERS We have a dumpster ordinance for any dumpster, rubbish container, pod, street storage device that is placed either on the street or the private property. The dumpster permit is good for up to a month and shall be submitted prior to placement. ZONING & BUILDING PERMITS Please be sure to check with the code and zoning department prior to any work performed to see if a zoning permit or building permit are required. A zoning permit is always required when: • Use, occupation, erection, construction, reconstruction, addition, conversion, alteration, movement, razing, demolition, removal, placement or extension (vertical or horizontal) of any structure or building. • Change in the type of use and expansion of the use of a structure, building, or area of land, including non-conformities. • Creation or establishment of a new use of a structure, building, or area of land. Zoning permit items include pools, fences, sheds, carports, sidewalks, patios, decks, building additions, layout changes of exterior items, etc. Depending on the type of project a building permit may also be required. We use a third-party for plan review for our building permits so please be sure to have those permits in at least a month before you anticipate beginning the project. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE Please be sure to keep up with your lawn care as well as noxious weeds and plants. This ties in with the trees where we don’t want either trees or shrubbery impeding the sidewalks. Cut accordingly
LION’S CLUB
It may be the slow time of the year, but the Camp Hill Lions are busy trying to recruit new members. Save us footwork and call to join us. All are welcome to attend a
meeting and enjoy a free meal. We have cleaned up our adopted part of Trindle Road. Unfortunately it doesn’t last long before it is a mess again. And back we go. We awarded a $2,500.00 HAAC scholarship to a deserving senior student. A scholarship in this amount is available to a Camp Hill student each year. We had fun providing hot dogs at the park on Memorial Day. Thanks to all of you who supported us, as we ran out! Always a good thing. Food for Thought: Balloon releases Traditionally used to celebrate weddings, graduations, and other special occasions as well as to commemorate memorials. While popular and festive, balloon releases have several harmful environmental implications besides litter: Seabirds ingesting plastic may become sick or die. A balloon string may wrap around marine life causing injury, illness, and suffocation. Sea turtles may experience a clogged digestive system resulting in starvation, since shiny, vibrant Mylar material resembles their favorite food—jellyfish.

BOROUGH STORMWATER PROJECT UPDATES CCTV INSPECTION Reybold, the contractor, has started to perform a remote camera inspection of all the Borough’s storm sewer pipes and inlets. The information from this study, in conjunction with the next round of MS4 permit requirements, will be used to select and prioritize stormwater projects for the next 5 year period. The first round of work is scheduled for the area of April, May, and November drives. The Borough website will be updated periodically as the work crews move from street to street. Be on the lookout for trucks like the ones below coming to you neighborhood soon!

What a great summer we are having in 2022! We started it off with the return of our Memorial Day Parade. It was great to see the community outside enjoying it together. Then we opened our pool and snack shack. We have seen a lot of familiar faces and new ones splash around or relax poolside. In June, we kicked off our camp season and have had a lot of children enjoying our camps, thanks to the hard work of the counselors. In June, we also kick off our Box Lunch Review with music and lunch. Thanks to Mid Penn Bank, Service 1st Restoration, HRG, Conte Wealth Advisors and Tanya’s Cookie Boutique for their sponsorships to this program. I would also like to thank all the instructors, counselors, lifeguards, snack shack staff, front desk staff and pool managers for a great job this summer. The programs, camps and pool would not have been a success without your dedication. We have a great team here in the Recreation Department and I truly appreciate every single one of them. They all made sure the community had fun! We are working on some special events coming up this fall, so be
sure to check out the details in the newsletter. Details about our special events including the Halloween Parade, Trick or Treat and the Parade of Lights are in this newsletter. If you lose your card, you need to notify the Borough immediately, so it can be deactivated. Replacement cards, are $5.00 each. Cornhole Block Party... THANK YOU Volunteers & Community! Our second annual Cornhole tournament, held on a gorgeous summer Saturday in June, was a roaring success! It was wonderful to see families in Camp Hill and beyond come together to enjoy a day of games, food, community—and, of course, cornhole. The day couldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our volunteers, many of them students, who donated everything from long-neck bottles for our ring toss to hot dogs for our food stand. Without you, the tournament would not have been possible. We appreciate you!

My name is Abigail Ebel and I am going into my senior year at Camp Hill High School. I have played on the girl’s varsity tennis team since freshman year, I play mellophone in marching band, and I play piano in my free time.

Teacher Spotlight, Amanda Rhykerd doing things independently, whether that’s playing a game or knowing how to occupy your time. CHAPLIN How do these skills help students in school and in life?
Emma Chaplin, The Lion Foundation’s intern during the 2021-22 school year, interviewed Camp Hill Life Skills Teacher Amanda Rhykerd, who has received Lion Foundation grants to bring her innovative ideas to the Life Skills classroom. CHAPLIN Could you tell me how you define life skills? RHYKERD Life skills is teaching students the basics of life, and how to be successful with skills that we all inherently have—but we’re teaching our students those skills directly because they struggle in that area. When I think of life skills I think about cooking and reading texts in your environment. I think about leisure, so
RHYKERD I think that it’s always important, especially for our population of students, to think about what their outcomes are, because they differ greatly from a neurotypical student. We think about what those outcomes are and then we really think about the skills such as leisure, cooking, even daily living skills like personal hygiene. CHAPLIN That’s awesome! Could you tell me how many students are currently served by the life skills classroom? RHYKERD Right now, we have 8 full time students. CHAPLIN And how has the funding from The Lion Foundation made your classroom better? RHYKERD I think the biggest contribution has been the Look N’ Cook curriculum. We actually fill a whole period

everyday with a cooking curriculum. We differentiate based on what students know and what they need to learn, and it really has given us an opportunity to capture some real life skills that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to experience. CHAPLIN Great! My final question is: what is your favorite thing about your job? RHYKERD My favorite thing about my job is definitely seeing students hit those small successes. To a lot of people they would seem small, but to them and to us they’re huge. That might be learning to tie your shoe, or learning how to read a new word. Seeing a student be excited that they succeeded is definitely exciting for me. CHAPLIN Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us! **This interview was lightly edited for space.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Camp Hill Community,
I am pleased to report that the Camp Hill School District 2021-2022 school year ended very successfully. This is best exemplified by the sustained level of excellence that our one hundred and six graduating seniors demonstrated in the areas of academics, athletics, the arts, and altruism. Our faculty and staff have been working diligently this summer in preparation for our 2022-2023 school year that commences for students on August 29th. This includes the areas of safety/security, curriculum review/revision, student scheduling, extended school year and many other student and mission focused initiatives. Many of our Camp Hill 1st through 5th grade students have been sharpening their math and language arts skills this summer in our Summer Express Program. Also, many of our secondary grade level students are taking advantage of two CHSD summer academic camp opportunities as they hone their algebra skills and prepare for the SAT and/or the ACT college entrance examinations. We are excited to begin this coming school year with a renewed and unwavering commitment to providing all students with skills, foundational knowledge, and opportunities for lifelong success. Class of 2022 Valedictorian: Diana DeLeon Class of 2022 Salutatorian: Michael Baturin 58 earned a 93% weighted GPA for their HS career 10 seniors attended the CTC, representing 7 programs 3 seniors from CTC were awarded scholarships Seniors participated in Mini-THON, raising $105,720.14 1 winner and 1 semi-finalist for the Best & Brightest by the Patriot News 34 members of the National Honor Society 2 Global Scholars 33 members of the World Language Honor Society 1 student earned Cum Laude for the Nat’l Latin Exam 9 seniors participated in the Classics Festival, all of whom placed for awards 1 senior participated in the Cumberland County Envirothon, winning 3rd place overall 3 seniors received awards at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair 1 senior won an Apollo Theatre Award, with several seniors participating in the musical Anything Goes 3 seniors participated in PMEA District 7 Band, 1 senior participated in PMEA District 5 Band, and 9 seniors participated in Cumberland County Band 2 seniors participated in PMEA District 7 Chorus and Regional Chorus 2 seniors participated in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and 1 senior won a gold key for Visual Art. 18 seniors will be joining collegiate athletic programs Sports District/Mid-Penn Championships: boys soccer, girls golf, and baseball Individuals: 1 girls golf state champion, 1 district champion and 3 state qualifiers (wrestling), 8 PIAA top-five placements (swimming), 1 PIAA district/state track & field champion, 1 Maxwell Award winner (football) , 1 Player of the Year awardee (baseball), 12 athletes awarded the E.
