added value

Seeing both the forest and all the trees THE FOREST IS ONE OF Sweden's most important natural resources. Domsjö Fiber appreciates the value of the forest, and we therefore want to ensure that it is handled in a responsible manner. We make sure that both we and the suppliers get more out of the forest, that we make more effective use of the resource we know as forest raw materials. We will all benefit from this, even the environment.    Domsjö Fiber is a unique company that acts on both cellulose wood and biofuel markets. We started out as a rare collaboration between a privately owned company and a municipally owned company. The privately owned company, Domsjö Fabriker, has subsequently been acquired by the Aditya Birla Group from India. Through this collaboration, we have deve loped into an interesting customer for the forestry industry. We can accept all product ranges from the forest, we rationalise purchases, transport and administration, and we develop technology and methods for optimal biomass extraction and distribution between cellulose wood/biofuel.    Our aim is to be a strong, renowned player, primarily on the national but also the international biofuel and cellulose wood markets, not only as a purchaser and seller, but also as an opinion former. We are working to achieve positive exposure of biofuel and cellulose wood, and are constantly striving to increase efficiency in the use of forest raw materials.

We're getting more out of the forest THE FOREST'S resources have traditionally been used primarily for

timber, as a raw material for paper. Nowadays we can utilise many more parts of each tree, including materials that have previously been left in the forest. We give value to the whole tree.    The chemical structures of trees, as the raw material for renewable and carbon dioxide-neutral "green chemicals", fuel and materials, offer significant potential and represent a previously un explored resource that we are now utilising. Thanks to exciting innova tions, this renewable forest raw material has replaced fossil materials in a number of areas. These reach the end customer in the form of fashion clothing, sausage skins, concrete additives, pharmaceuticals, electricity, energy, district heating, steam and many other applications.    Domsjö Fiber purchases forest raw materials, and then distributes the optimal material to our owners. This can include biproducts from the local sawmill and cellulose industry, cellulose wood that is too thin to be used as sawmill timber, as well as fuel wood. Domsjö Fabriker is unique in the way that they can use dry wood from pine and spruce in the process.    Övik Energi's combined heat and power plant produces renewable energy from biofuel, made up of bark, branches and tops, peat and woodchips.

Co-operation for efficiency Övik Energi is an environmental company. We supply energy solutions that do not impact on either the local environment or the climate. Thanks to Domsjö Fiber, we are rationalising our handling of raw materials. KRISTINA SÄFSTEN, MD OF ÖVIK ENERGI

DOMSJÖ FIBER IS AN example of a successful co-operation between biofuel and cellulose wood consumers, as well as between munici pal and private companies. We are an independent alternative to the large forestry companies, and we work on the local market.    The company was founded jointly by the privately owned biorefinery Domsjö Fabriker AB and the municipally owned energy company Övik Energi AB. Our task is to supply the owner compa nies' facilities with raw materials, and to act as an advisor to our owner companies on issues that affect or might be affected by the raw material. The aim of the collaboration is to make optimal use of the raw material that is available and to procure as large a propor tion as possible from local suppliers. In spring 2011, Domsjö Fabriker was acquired by the Aditya Birla Group, the world's largest manufac turer of viscose staple fibres.    This collaboration is producing cost-effective solutions. The cost-effectiveness is generated through the optimal distribution of raw materials, greater customer benefits, a larger network of contacts, as well as co-ordination gains within purchasing, logistics and development issues.    Övik Energi is an environmentally aware energy group that contributes towards social development that is sustainable in the long term. Environmental work forms a natural part of the company's day-to-day activities and permeates the entire operation. The aim is to produce the greatest possible amount of energy with the least possible impact on the environment. That is why Övik Energi decided to build a combined heat and

power plant (CHP) run by biofules. The district heating in Örnskölds vik is produced at the Hörneborgsverket power plant. The plant is run solely by biofuels such as bark, woodchips, peat, as well as chipped branches and tops. When operating at full capacity, the combined heat and power plant requires 1.3 terawatt hours (TWh) of biofuel annually. This means that around 50 truck loads of biofuel have to be delivered every day in order for combustion to continue 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.    Domsjö Fabriker in Örnsköldsvik has probably come further than any other company in Sweden when it comes to biorefinery products. The company refines products with a strong environ mental profile, and utilises as much of the wood raw material constituent parts as possible.    The biorefinery produces special cellulose that is used for a variety of products from viscose to hygiene products. The hemicellulose is refined to make bioethanol and the lignin is refined. Lignin is used primarily in additives in concrete, and means that less cement is required in the concrete. This saves energy and reduces emissions of carbon dioxide. Domsjö Fabriker has one of the world's largest units for the production of lignin. The factory's unique Our process proviprocess means that it can also produce an increas ing number of supplementary products, such as des us with unique carbonic acid, energy, biogas, etc. Due to Domsjö opportunities to produce Fabriker's increase in capacity, consumption now high-quality products with stands at around 1.6 million m3f of cellulose significant consideration for the chips and cellulose wood annually.

Why supply to Domsjö Fiber? Our suppliers should feel that they gain natural added value when they co-operate with us.

DOMSJÖ FIBER CARES ABOUT the local area and is striving to increase the proportion of local raw materials. Local raw materials reduce the transport distance and hence also the impact on the environ ment, as well as allowing us to benefit forest owners in our region. We are working to achieve more stable prices and more efficient transport operations.    Since commencing operations, Domsjö Fiber has significantly increased the proportion of local raw materials. We aim to be the natural business partner for contractors in the local area. The forest is one of our most important natural resources, and should be managed responsibly. That is why we are working actively in order to consistently rationalise the use of each tree, to give value to the whole tree, an approach that has not always been a matter of course.    Through collaboration, we are ensuring that the value of the forest benefits local players. This enables us to protect local jobs, at the same time as accepting responsibility for the environment. Our suppliers should feel that they gain natural added value when they

Environment co-operate with us. Domsjö Fiber offers the efficient extraction of forest raw materials. We accept all product ranges from the forest. This reduces transport, as it is possible to transport more than one product range in each truck or vessel to the same reception point, instead of unloading at several different locations. Suppliers receive payment for materials that have previously been left behind, such as dry industrial wood.         Domsjö Fiber is developing technologies and methods for optimal biomass extraction and distribution between cellulose wood/ biofuel. All of this contributes to reducing operating costs for our suppliers. We are also rationalising purchases, which reduces administrative costs.    As a supplier, you quite simply get more out of the forest.

CONSTANTLY RISING oil prices and fear of the consequences of the green house effect are increasingly boosting interest in alternative solutions that are renewable and that give consid eration to the environment. When it comes to forest raw materials, Domsjö Fiber aims to accept environmental responsibility that extends along the entire chain, from forest to end user.    Örnsköldsvik offers good oppor tunities to utilise boat and rail transport, as we have a well developed port and rail infrastructure. Alongside our owner companies, we are working to ensure that more of the forest is utilised. We will also continue to develop our various operations and products, in order to decrease the use of fossil raw materials and fuels and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The process should be kind to the environment from start to finish.    All of this entails greater cost-effectiveness and more environmentally friendly management of the valuable forest raw materials.
