A Letter from Your LTG

Dear Division 28, I'm finally home! Though I dearly miss the amazing people I met in Dallas and College Station, it's nice to be reunited with everyone in Houston again. I never noticed how humid it was down here until now.

Summer Board Update While I was gone, I got to spend one night at Summer Board, where your LTGs worked hard to make it a great year! One major thing that changed about reporting is that report cards will now be handed out at the PCMs by the LTGs instead of being mailed out by the District Secretary. Just one more reasonsto attend my PCM coming up on August 18th! Also, the District Staff has compiled resource CDs that I'm going to be delivering to all the clubs as soon as they come out! Be sure to invite me to club meetings or come to the Division 28 Fall Training Conference so I can get them to you! (:

Some hastily taken pictures as everyone scampers to catch their flights after Summer Board... meet LTGs Seyeon Kim and Connor Brown! You'll be seeing Connor at the FTC in September.

I hope everyone has been savoring the last bits of summer! School is starting in just a few weeks (dun, dun, dun)! This means officer meetings should be abound throughout your division to plan for the school year, and more urgently, your schools' fish camps! I've been making phone calls to the presidents and speaking to a lot of you for the first time. I must say we have some very lovely people in our division! Getting to know you all just has me more convinced we're going to have a fantastic year. I'm super excited to be working with and getting to know all of you absolutely lovely people. Let's make Division 28 awesome! Much Key Club love,

Nancy Huang Division 28 LTG

One Scoop PCM, Two Scoops Social The Pertinent Info School's coming around, so it's time to get ready with a joint PCM/Social! It's always nice to see the other clubbers from your division and get to know them. <3 What: A Presidential Council Meeting followed by ice cream and a movie! When: Saturday, August 18 from 2pm to 5pm Where: August 19 at the Freeman Memorial Library (16616 Diana Lane, Houston, TX 77062). Go through the children's section to the first floor conference room to find us!

Some topics we'll cover at the PCM -

Freshman recruiting. Can't have a club without members! Enthusiastic freshmen are invaluable to making sure your school's Key Club stays active after you've graduated. We'll talk about what to say at your school's fish camp and how to have a successful first meeting. Divisional project. What do you know about the Division 28 project? Learn more about Project Didi and what your club can do to help. Also be a part of voting for the divisional project! Club fundraising. Projects and events are always going to take money. And there are the annual dues to International that keep your club in good standing. Also, it seems early, but sponsoring your club's trip to DCON 2013 starts now! Just $14 a month starting in AUGUST will fund your expenses by time April rolls around.

"Think of life as a gigantic ice cream parlor with infinite flavors to taste. Admittedly, you won't like every flavor. But hey, you don't need to go near that flavor ever again. Instead, indulge in flavors you know you're passionate about! And don't be afraid to taste something that might look funny -- you never know!" - Karen Salmansohn

Yay for democracy! Don't forget to vote on what movie to watch at the PCM! There's a poll on the Division 28 Facebook page that all you have to do is click, or if you don't have Facebook, you can reach me through text, call, or email! Here are your candidates: (1) Mean Girls (2) Up (3) Anything! (: (4) Suggest your own -write-in candidates are welcome!

Cast your vote when you RSVP!

Interclub Causes

No idea what to do for a project this year? Here are some great causes your club can adopt alongside other clubs across the division and the district. Talk to me if you have any questions about doing any of these projects! I'm happy to answer anything. The Didi Project Every year, autistic kids in Houston go to The Westview School, where these children can learn and actually make friends with their classmates. The problem is, Westview's tuition averages to $15,000 a year and almost all the families struggle to keep their kids' school bills paid for, on top of therapy classes, clubs, special diets, and medications -- all to help their children one day fit into normal society. Parents sacrifice a LOT for their autistic children, which is why I want to create a scholarship so that they have one less financial burden to worry about.

Here's Didi! Teaching my brother how to take webcam photos is harder than you'd think.

To fundraise for the Didi Project, your club can hold a bake sale, a walkathon, or just ask around for donations! You can award the clubber who raises the most money with a Skype session with Didi, the kid who started it all. The B.R.O. Project Participate in the Brothers Reaching Out project! Direct service and fundraising will drastically help the Children's Miracle Network (CMN), a network of hospitals that makes sure that children get the best healthcare they possibly can.

Project Eliminate Surely by now you have heard of the Eliminate Project! The TexasOklahoma District Project has now become a two-year district initiative! To meet Kiwanis' deadline of raising $80m by 2015, us Key Clubbers have to step it up to raise enough funds to wipe maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the earth.

Some Club Tips

A bunch of things that are good to know.

Who you calling a worm-catcher, you lint licker? Once again, it's time to pay dues to International! Your band of jolly high school volunteers can only be considered a part of Key Club International if your club has paid dues. Remember, early bird is Monday, October 15th, and if you've sent in the $12.50 for at least fifteen members by then, not only are you officially recognized by International, your club gets recognition at DCON 2013 just for paying early. Following the early bird deadline, dues are DUE (for rizzles!) on November 15th.

A Quick Fish Camp Checklist Do I have my...  Display board?  Table?  High-quality, not-hardand-crumbly cookies?  Handouts/brochures?  Smile? (Cheesy, but seriously -- be approachable! Freshmen are shy!)  Muffin costume? (Just kidding. This is optional.)

Wow, Hipster Kitty is such a good Key Clubber.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF To fundraise for the Eliminate Project, your club can collect donations in official UNICEF boxes. Ask anyone you know or forgo your neighbors' candy and ask for change instead. This is a super easy and fun way to take part in the District Initiative! If this is your club's first year participating, it's time order boxes from UNICEF by calling 1-800 KIWANIS X411. Otherwise you'll get your boxes again automatically.

Fall Rally Is September 29th! Meet with clubbers from all over T-O in super fun Six Flags! More information will be coming out very, very soon, but if you have any questions just call or email me.

Youth Opportunities Fund Applications for YOF grants are due October 15th. If your club wants to undertake any projects this year, big or small, that may need extra funding, definitely apply! All you have to do is fill out the form here (links to an online pdf form). Anything remotely fish-related makes me want sushi. So yummy! No, I am not suggesting that you eat your freshmen recruits.
