CHARLIE HIGSON TELLS HOT TV WHY HE HAD TO DO JEKYLL AND HYDE HIS WAY
ver since it was published in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde has fascinated readers. The classic novel has been transformed into all kinds of other tales, from TV to film, and, this week, it gets another makeover. This time, the action takes place in 1930s London as the newlyarrived Robert Jekyll finds himself facing all kinds of amazing enemies as he discovers his true identity. Charlie Higson, star of The Fast Show and bestselling author, is the man who’s created the new Jekyll and Hyde universe, and he sat down for a chat with Hot TV to tell us all about what’s changed, and why it’s going to have you hooked…
WHERE DO WE START WITH THIS JEKYLL AND HYDE STORY? It is about the original Dr Jekyll’s grandson. It is set in the 1930s and it starts in Ceylon, as it was then, now
4 HOTTV
Sri Lanka, where Dr Jekyll, who is in his mid-20s, has been brought up by an Indian foster family. He knows nothing about his real family or his past. He is a newly-qualified doctor and weird things start happening to him. Things erupt from his past and from himself, and he is called to England to settle the estate of his grandfather. This series is about him learning about the past and why he is like he is, because he starts changing in ways that he doesn’t understand.
WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL BOOK? The big thing I have had to change from the book is the idea that his change is a genetically inherited trait. WHAT IS OUR HERO UP AGAINST? I have created a whole Jekyll and Hyde world, so there is a secretive government organisation called MIO, Military Intelligence Other, run by Richard E Grant’s character, Mr
Bulstrode. Ranged against them is Tenebray, which is an organisation of monsters, although some of them look human. Both organisations want him to work for them because he could go either way. He is trying to keep out of the clutches of both and steer a middle ground. That is the tension of the first series, the fight for Jekyll and Hyde’s soul. WAS IT DAUNTING TO WORK ON SUCH A CLASSIC? Not really, because although everyone knows the story and the idea and can talk about Jekyll and Hyde, these days very few people have read it. HOW DID YOU PICK YOUR DR JEKYLL? In any series it is hard to get your central character, but this is two central characters! It is a tricky role because you have to convincingly play both sides of the character. We’re very good at doing effete young men, that sort of nicely spoken Hugh Grant figure, but we don’t do
tough guys. We were lucky to find Tom Bateman who could effortlessly switch between the two. He can be very physical and aggressive and take over a room, but he is also able to do physically soft and repressed.
AND HOW DOES HE TURN INTO THE MONSTER? We had a lot of discussions on what we’d do with the transformation. I’m very aware that a lot of people will be tuning into the first episode because they want to see what he looks like when he turns into a monster. But this is a 10-hour series where he is Hyde for a lot of the time. I knew from the start that we didn’t want him to look like a monster – he has to pass for a human being. We don’t want to saddle him with huge fangs and sprouting hair. It had to be done by the actor as a performance thing. You get both, the classic Hugh Grant type that appeals to some women, and the bad boy type, so we have got all bases covered. ■ Jekyll And Hyde, Sunday, 6.30pm, ITV
The Brighton bobbies of Cuffs
LIFE’S A BEACH NEW DRAMA CUFFS FOLLOWS THE FORTUNES OF BOBBIES IN BRIGHTON
There’s no shortage of real-life police documentaries on TV, and anyone who’s seen them will know that life is always stranger than fiction. New eight-part drama Cuffs is giving that idea a run for its money though, because the plot follows a bunch of Brighton bobbies caught up in incidents ranging from a booby-trapped cannabis farm in a suburban semi to naturists
fighting on the beach. Ashley Walters stars as PC Ryan Draper, and he says that there’s more to his character than meets the eye. “He’s a single dad, a father of two,” says Ashley. “He’s got a daughter and a son. He has an army background, and he’s a very regimented guy. “He’s very focused and he tries to do everything by the book. Anyone that puts so much energy into that sort of lifestyle
has cracks somewhere. Gradually over the series, you get to understand what those cracks are and what makes him tick.” The drama follows the working lives of the coppers, but also lets you see what they get up to off-duty. Ashley, though, admits that he was most excited to be part of the chase scenes! “I don’t know whether I’ve had one specific scene that I’ve loved over others,
but I’d say that I’m enjoying the action,” he admits. “As soon as I get in that police car and floor it, it becomes a different world. I feel like a kid with a new toy. “When it gets to the action, to the force of playing that policeman who is out to get his criminal, you forget about the acting and enjoy the fun of it all.” ■ Cuffs, Wednesday, 8pm, BBC1
THE RICH LIST EAMONN AND RUTH MEET SOME OF THE WORLD’S WEALTHIEST PEOPLE
We’re used to seeing TV couple Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford presenting This Morning, but, this week, they’re doing something slightly more glamorous. Eamonn & Ruth: How The Other Half Live is a brand new six-part documentary series, and, from Ibiza to Moscow, they’re meeting people with lots and lots of money. With exclusive access to this privileged world, the couple will be able to get a taste of a super-rich lifestyle most of us will never experience, and Ruth says she can’t wait! “We all wonder sometimes what life would be like if we were really, really rich,” she admits. “We dream about what we’d buy and how we’d live if money was no object. If you fantasise about owning a private jet, an enormous house, fast cars and expensive jewellery, this is the show for you.” Whether they’re learning why Ibiza is the place to be for the worryingly wealthy, or they’re taking a private jet to Moscow for a party, Eamonn and Ruth will find out if money makes you happy, and Eamonn reveals it was a real eye-opener for him. “We thought we knew what wealth was – but
we had no idea,” he says. “There is a lot more of it about than you think and the real journey in this series is joining us to watch in awe as to what people spend it on.” ■ Eamonn & Ruth: How The Other Half Lives, Tuesday, 9pm, Channel 5 Just how much can be spent in a bridal store?

THIS WEEK’S SOAPS GUILTY ALYA OWNS UP TO CHEATING ON POOR GARY The pressure is mounting on Alya this week as her family pull out all the stops to welcome Gary as their future son-in-law. On Monday, Sharif and Yasmeen call at the Windasses’ to announce they’d like to make Gary a partner in the family business at the gym. They also invite Gary for dinner at No.6 with Alya, Anna and Zeedan to celebrate the new job, and while everyone else is delighted, Alya’s guilt is beginning to get the better of her. Then, when Izzy and Eva ask Alya about her wedding plans at the factory, it all gets too much and Alya runs out. However, she can’t escape the wedding preparations at home, where Yasmeen shows Alya her mother’s wedding dress, asking if she’d like to wear it when she marries Gary. Alya finally admits to Sinead that she can only marry Gary if she tells him the truth about her one-night stand with Jason. Meanwhile, Gary has already told Jason that he’ll have to quit his job to take up his new role at the gym, and, when he tells Alya that he’s not only signed the contract at the gym but also asked Jason to be his best man, Alya snaps. She takes Gary to No.6 and tells him that she has had sex with someone else, but says that it was a terrible mistake and that she really loves Gary. Yasmeen, Sharif and Zeedan come home to find Alya in tears and Gary tells them what she has done and her family are horrified. But Gary still doesn’t know that Jason is the man in question and he accuses Aidan of sleeping with Alya. Will Jason admit his guilt too?

LIVERPOOL V SOUTHAMPTON
Big Sam Allardyce takes charge of his first home match since taking over at Sunderland – and he’s got the perfect chance to become an instant hit at the Stadium of Light. Both sides are struggling towards the bottom of the table, but Sunderland have had by far the best of the derby clashes recently, winning the last five against Newcastle. Former England gaffer Steve “wally with the brolly” McClaren has had a shocker since taking over at the Magpies. Could it be a repeat of last season’s game, when Jermain Defoe hit the winner for Sunderland?
In the second big derby of the day, the Manchester clubs lock horns for the first time this season. There’s little daylight between the sides in the league and both will want to capitalise on Chelsea’s poor form. United enjoyed a 4-2 win over their rivals last season, but they were on the back foot when striker Sergio Aguero put City in front after just eight minutes. Ashley Young levelled and Marouane Fellaini put United 2-1 up before half time. Juan Mata and Chris Smalling put the game beyond doubt with Aguero adding a late consolation goal.
Jürgen Klopp takes his seat in the Anfield dugout for the first time since his arrival in the Premier League and comes up against the experienced Ronald Koeman. Just three wins in eight matches saw Brendan Rodgers axed and now Liverpool face a Saints side who ran riot in their last away fixture, beating champions Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. The home fans, though, will be desperate for the former Borussia Dortmund boss to hit the ground running. What chants will the Kop have ready for Klopp?

The X Factor 8pm, ITV Following the low-budget party game that is the Six Chair Challenge, The X Factor shuffles off to the judges’ houses round, and, this year, it’s all live! Oh, actually, no it isn’t. The bigwigs had originally wanted the auditions to be shown in all their tearful, a cappella twiddly bits glory when the series was being revamped, but that idea has been ditched. Why? Well, apparently “logistical and technical reasons would have made a live broadcast impossible. They also said that the weather might not be up to much, it would have been really expensive and Simon might have
been all grumpy. What we’ve ended up with instead is pre-recorded auditions at the judges’ dwellings then a live show where the singers will ďŹ nd out who’s made it through in front of their friends and family. Oh, and several million viewers too. It’s a bit of a shambles really, and it makes us question the whole thing. What will they tell us next, that these empty-looking luxury mansions completely lacking in personal possessions aren’t even the judges’ actual homes? Still, after Sunday’s second show we’ll know who’s in the ďŹ nal, so it’s got to be done. ++++,

Downton Abbey
9pm, ITV The world has embraced Downton Abbey for its total, complete and utter Englishness, but frankly we feel shocked. The ratings-hogging behemoth has been a magnet for scandal from day one, and we can no longer contain our disgust. There’s been a murder, a gay kiss, children born out of wedlock and Lady Mary getting so steamy with one particular diplomat that he ended up dead! It’s very unbecoming of such a well-to-do family if you ask us. However, all of those previous incidents will pale in comparison to this week’s bombshell, because the great house is being
made open to the great unwashed. Shock! Horror! Yes, the filthy oiks from the village will be allowed into the house to raise money for that never-ending saga of boredom that is the hospital. Of course, opinion is divided among the family and the servants, not least between Violet and Cora as a decision is made about the hospital takeover. Will we ever hear the end of that hospital? Please? There is a bit of non-hospital happiness knocking around this week, though, because Mary and Edith are both looking to settle with the men in their lives. Here’s hoping! ++++,

SKY LIVING
The Muppets 8pm, Sky1 We have to confess that Josh Groban is a bit of a mystery to us. Wikipedia claims that the American singer-songwriter has sold a frankly astonishing 25 million records worldwide and done all kinds of amazing things like meet Nelson Mandela and date January Jones, but we couldn’t name a single one of his tunes or multi-platinum albums. So, please, don’t ask us. Anyway, the reason we mention the man is because he’s playing a starring role in the second episode of the new Muppets series, where he makes an appearance as Miss Piggy’s date. Groban has got
form for adventures with furry friends, because he appeared in the movie Muppets Most Wanted, but we feel he may not last too long here. Why? Well, no sooner has he been set up on a date with Miss Piggy by her former froggy fella Kermit than the singer is filling his porcine sweetheart’s head full of ideas on how to improve her chat show. Still, Groban isn’t the only famous face on this week’s show, because Fozzie has been invited to a party at Jay Leno’s house and Kermit’s crush, Back to the Future star Lea Thompson, also pops up tonight. +++++

10pm, Channel 5 Do you ever wonder what happened to Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek? You know, the guy who actually played Dawson and had a head that was perhaps slightly larger than average? Yes, that’s him. Well, after popping up in all kinds of ďŹ lms and TV shows, he’s ďŹ nally ended up in spin-off series CSI: Cyber, playing senior FBI Field Agent Elijah Mundo. He’s actually rather good and with Patricia Arquette starring as his boss, Avery Ryan, there are plenty of star turns to keep you interested. There’s also an explosive plot this week as a bomber intent on
revealing the truth behind our over-reliance on technology attacks a cinema, leaving scores of people dead. Agents Ryan and Mundo have to sift through the wreckage to get an idea of what happened, but they’re going to have to piece things together quickly to avoid another catastrophe. Why? Because the rest of the team have a found a website called Crowdbomber, which not only shows footage of the attack, but also says that the more hits it gets, the sooner the next bomb will go off. It’s a race against time to stop that happening. +++++

NEW SERIES
The Affair
9pm, Sky Atlantic At any given moment, there’s always one big series that everyone is talking about. It doesn’t matter whether they’ve seen it or not, or even if they actually think it’s any good, they will discuss it all the same, to the point that if you haven’t seen it, you feel like you have to just to join in. It happened with The Wire, then Breaking Bad, then Game of Thrones and now The Affair. Yes, the ďŹ rst series of the drama, starring Dominic West and Ruth Wilson as lovers Noah and Alison, quickly became the most-talked about TV of the year, so fans (and people who’ve heard people
talking about it) will be pleased to know that the series is back this week with an opening double bill of episodes. Fresh off the back of winning the award for Best Television Drama at the Golden Globes, the second season gives us two new points of view in the shape of the pair’s former partners Helen (played by Maura Tierney, of ER fame) and Cole (played by Dawson’s Creek star Joshua Jackson). Noah and Alison still feature, of course, and the ďŹ rst episode sees Noah and Helen’s divorce start to turn nasty. Get involved now so you can talk about it! +++++

Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railway Journeys 9pm, Channel 5 We can’t quite decide if Chris Tarrant must have done something really good or really bad to deserve his latest presenting gig. The former face of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has spent the last few episodes chugging around the world on some of the most extreme railway lines possible, meeting all manner of people and seeing all kinds of things. From the jungles of Thailand to the Siberian Arctic, the host has still managed his trademark chuckle wherever he’s been, and this week’s expedition should raise a smile or two. Chris is zooming an impressive 1,000 miles across
Japan on what is reputed to be the best railway in the world, discovering some very interesting things about the famous bullet train along the way. He’s also hearing about how the atomic bomb devastated Hiroshima, visiting the world’s busiest railway station and hearing how a cat called Tama brought £6million into the local economy. No, it didn’t win Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? six times. After all that, Chris heads to the country’s frozen north to see if the superfast trains can still cut it in the depths of winter. Hope you brought your jumper, Chris! +++++

The Graham Norton Show 10.35pm, BBC1 Who’s sat next to you on the sofa? No, don’t look, you’ll give the game away! Is it an A-list Hollywood superstar? No? Well, in that case you’ve already lost out to Mr Graham Norton, because the diminutive chat show king has once again stuffed his celebrity chair full of the kind of talent that other shows can only dream of. First up is movie hunk Bradley Cooper alongside Sienna Miller, as the pair discuss their new chef ick Burnt in which they reunited for the ďŹ rst time since American Sniper. Not enough? Well, Graham also has Dame Maggie Smith and her
co-star Alex Jennings, who will be telling us all about their new ďŹ lm The Lady In The Van. We’re guessing she might also give us a few Downton Abbey stories if we’re lucky. Graham’s not done there, though, because iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford will be stopping by for a chinwag and then, right at the end – before that bit with the ipping chair – there will be a very special musical guest. Yes, the one and only Justin Bieber will be appearing, fully clothed, to perform his latest single What Do You Mean?, before taking a seat with all those other guests. ++++,
