‘Motherhood is a whole new ball game!’ Coronation Street’s Paula Lane on being a new mum and this week’s live episode

t’s been quite a year for actress Paula Lane. Not only has her Corrie character, Kylie, been through the mill with the return of son Max’s bad-boy father Callum, off-screen she’s had a baby of her own! Now Paula, 29, is facing one of her toughest challenges to date – a live show on the soap to coincide with the 60th birthday of ITV. Paula has been on the Corrie cobbles for ﬁve years but took four months off with baby Arthur and her actor husband, Tom Shaw, after giving birth on New Year’s Eve last year. But since her return to the street, Kylie’s been in a custody battle with Max’s dad, Callum (played by Sean Ward). And in the last few weeks, he’s been at war with the Platt family – even threatening to kill Sarah. Now, in the hour-long live show on Wednesday, that battle is set to come to a head – and we can’t wait! Here, Paula tells TV Extra how she dealt with returning to work, what she wants to happen to Callum and how she relaxes away from the Street.

was crazy; like nothing in this world. I have quite intense scenes, so I’m used to standing there staring at someone and waiting for that hand to go down to say that you are live. But the fact they’ve got the confidence in us to carry the story is very flattering. We need to use that confidence and smash it. Were you asked if you wanted to do the live episode? No. I’d just come back from having my baby and they were like, “This is what we’re doing.” How have you coped with returning to work and leaving your son, Arthur? It’s been very hard; I’m not going to deny that. But I’ve just got on with it. I’ve got a great support network at home and at work. I’ve not had sleepless nights; I’ve been very lucky. He’s a very, very good baby and very content. Motherhood is a whole new ball game but I love the chaos. It’s fabulous – your whole life changes in an instant. Have your co-stars given you any advice on babies? Everyone’s babies are so

How are you feeling about the live episode of Corrie? I am nervous. The 50th anniversary was my ﬁrst live episode and the adrenaline rush

different; I’m frequently thinking, “I’m so lucky” when people tell me their children aren’t sleeping. I’m not going to rub it in but, for me at the minute, it’s really good! Are you in a routine so when the baby sleeps, you can learn your lines? Yeah, I don’t do any work until he goes down to bed. Sometimes I miss him when he’s actually gone to bed and I’m not even home from work. That’s hard – when you don’t see your baby’s eyes open for three days. But mummy time is mummy time and, as soon as he’s in bed, I can concentrate more when I’ve not got any little hands anywhere trying to grab the script. I’m lucky as my lines go in quite quickly. Then sometimes I think we’re that conﬁdent and the writing is so good, we can learn it on set as well. It keeps a freshness to it. Have you had Arthur on set? Yes, a couple of times. I’ve brought him into make-up and he loved it. He’s nine months old now. There have been a few of us who have had babies and it’s been nice to share that. Their names are all similar too – you’ve got Albert, who is Jennie McAlpine’s son, Arthur who is mine and Artie, who is Cath Tyldesley’s. We all had a baby date when we got together. 5

Is he too young to have seen you on screen yet? I did a Lorraine Kelly interview – a live link – and he was watching at home and he knew it was me when he heard my voice. But the great thing now is that you’ve got FaceTime so, even if I’m at work, I can call home and he knows me. How does your appearance differ when you’re not playing Kylie? I feel so clean when I’m not at work! Honestly, I do feel really, really scummy as Kylie. It has a strange impact when you look in the mirror. If I’ve been quite busy, I just think, “Oh crikey, I feel really tired today.” You probably don’t get recognised as much in real like as you look so different from Kylie… You’d be surprised. After ﬁve years I can still walk around the supermarket, although I’ve got to be quick and can’t dilly dally. But

I do still get recognised – even though it’s nice to get away with it sometimes. What would you like to see happen to Callum in the live shows? I want the Platts to come out on top. Although Callum’s just one driving force and there’s more of us, he’s destroying the family. It is quite scary that one man on his own can do that. He goes on this vendetta over the course of a week against all the Platts and everyone connected with them. I don’t think Corrie has ever had storylines this dark before. They’ve really pushed the boundaries with Callum. What’s it like working with your on-screen partner Jack P. Shepherd? There’s never a dull moment. You always feel very safe and content on the set and you can pretty much try anything and you feel open to a performance. He makes me laugh every day and I do love him. He’s my bestie!

And what about the kissing scenes? The first kissing scene Jack and I ever had, we were like, “Hi, nice to meet you.” Then we were stood by a jukebox and had to kiss for five minutes. When you’ve worked with someone for five years, it becomes the norm. Do you two socialise off-screen? Only a little bit, like if we are at an awards bash. We’re so busy that, when we go home at night, family time is family time. Are you excited by Cath Tyldesley’s return to Corrie as Eva? Yes, I am. Kylie and Eva do seem to come together at crucial times when one of them is in trouble. They are like Patsy and Edina from Ab Fab. I do love Cath; she’s gorgeous. It’s nice having a friendship on the Street. What do you do in your free time? I like to run and I live in a great place to be able to do that without being pestered. I get as far away from work as I can. Would you like to stay on Corrie? My contract is up in May, so I have a little while longer – and we’ll see after that. ‘It has been

amazing!’ Michelle Dockery on her best Downton Abbey moments and her plans now she’s leaving the show behind

ack in 2010, hardly anybody thought ITV’s new period drama, Downton Abbey, would be much more than a nice, cosy Sunday night series. Yes, it had Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes at the helm and heavyweight stars like Hugh Bonneville and Dame Maggie Smith, but did Britain really want yet another costume drama? Of course, five years later, as the sixth and final series starts, we all know the answer to that! The show went on to take the nation by storm and won legions of fans overseas, bagging Golden Globes and Emmy Awards galore. It also made stars of its young unknown cast members, including Jessica Brown Findlay, Lily James, Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery – who takes centre stage for the last days of Downton Abbey. Michelle, 33, plays Lady Mary Crawley, who has been engaged twice, married, widowed, found a dead Turkish diplomat in her bed, become a mum and, finally, ended up practically running the estate. With Downton’s days numbered, Michelle has been looking to Hollywood for her next career move. She has already starred in films like the

blockbuster thriller Non-Stop alongside Liam Neeson and she’s signed up to star in new US series Good Behaviour as an ex-con. And off-screen her life is just as exciting as she is engaged to PR director John Dineer. As viewers get ready to say goodbye to the Crawley family over eight episodes and a Christmas special, Michelle tells TV Extra about her favourite memories of making the show and why Lady Mary’s life is about more than finding the right man. When did you first realise that Downton was a bit of a big deal? It seemed to explode in the first few episodes of the first series in our country and then, when it started to air in America, it caught on and it began to grow. It’s still growing in other countries! Was there one particular moment when you noticed that you’d hit the headlines? There have been so many moments! In the first week of the first series, I nipped down my local newsagents to get a pint of milk and there was me, Laura Carmichael and Jessica Brown Findlay on the cover of three newspapers! That was, for me, one of the biggest moments. All I wanted was a bit of milk for my tea! Has that kind of attention been scary or exciting for you? A bit of both really, I think – we never would have imagined the enormity of it. It has been amazing.

Mary has had plenty of love interests. Who will she end up with? Yes, she is never short of a suitor or two! This year, I have realised that Mary is trying to find happiness within herself; it’s not just about finding the right man because she goes through quite an interesting time in her life in this series. She just wants to be content and happy. She is always just chasing the happy! We’ve heard there’s a racing car driver who has his eye on her… I can’t tell you much about him. He’s around! He’s Lady Shackleton’s nephew, which is a surprise to all of the characters. He is one of the potentials. You wouldn’t want to know, because you want to be surprised. We really wouldn’t want to spoil it for you. So we won’t be seeing Lady Mary in a racing car? No. I do not get in a racing car! It seems like Mary is much closer to her dad as this series starts… Their relationship feels like it is always building because, in the beginning, it was quite fraught with her father. He forgives her for her latest scandal. But she has got to a point where she’s like, “If its going to come out, it’s going to come out.” She is almost getting bored of these scandals that keep rearing their ugly heads. What do you think the show’s legacy will turn out to be? I hope that people will continue to watch it in years to come – like The Forsyte Saga or, for me, Prime Suspect and Cracker. I love going back and watching those British shows and it would be nice to know that people pass it on to their children to watch in years to come. So you’re looking forward to watching it again as a 60 year old? When we live in our bungalow! Laura (Carmichael, who plays Mary’s sister, Lady Edith) and I have got this funny spoof in our heads that one day we will end up living together with 16 cats after loads of plastic surgery. Maybe we should do a film – a remake of Death Becomes Her with Edith and Mary in their 60s, loads of surgery, trying to push each other down the stairs! I’m going to suggest it to Julian!

So are you and Laura close? There are people I will miss on the show but me and Laura won’t have that, because we’re going to see a lot of each other. Do you get recognised a lot when you’re on a night out together? When we’re together, we get recognised more. For some reason, I am recognised more than others. Jim (Carter, who plays Mr Carson) gets recognised the most. There’s no one like him! Is it possible to pick a highlight of your time on the show? One thing that will always be one of the greatest moments in the last six years was that, on my 30th birthday, we were doing a press tour in New York. The night before we had done The Jonathan Ross Show and our publicist, Vic, said to me, “What do you want for your birthday?” I said, “I don’t really want anything. I’m just sad that Laura’s not going to be in New York.” So our publicity team ﬂew Laura out to New York and she surprised me on my birthday night. She skidded into the restaurant with a great big bow on her head and it was one of the greatest moments of my life! It was amazing. That just summed up the joy of some of the times that we have had. Then we just partied for three nights in New York.

She explains,“I do get more daily recognition, but I still haven’t stopped going to work on the train, taking my son to playgroup or going to the supermarket.”

Award-winner… Over the last year, Kellie admits playing Linda Carter has been both a challenge and a highlight in her career, earning her Best Actress and Best Dramatic Performance at The British Soap Awards 2015. She reveals,“When you approach any scene, you have to put yourself in that place to do it well. And, to do it truthfully, you have to give a little bit yourself. I try to be Linda in that moment experiencing what she has experienced. I felt like I’ve been given a gift with the storyline. I was proud and honoured to be asked to do it.”

Queen of The Vic… Kellie has played landlady Linda in EastEnders for almost two years, and has loved every minute. She says,“I am genuinely having a good time. It makes your day joyful.” The actress has particularly enjoyed working on recent emotional storylines with Danny Dyer, who plays her husband, Mick. She admits,“I just thought the scripts were brilliant. I love working with Danny and it gave us a chance to do some really lovely stuff.”

Fitness secrets… The soap star reveals she is trying to become fitter.“I’ve been working out to get fit and strong. I’m at an age where if I sit too long I have to unfold myself,” says Kellie. She admits she hasn’t done much exercise since she had her little boy three years ago. “I started training three weeks ago at my Cross Fit Gym. It’s about an hour’s workout. I do exercises like flipping tyres,” she adds.

Swinging into Strictly… Kellie will be strutting her stuff on the dance floor alongside the likes of TV chef Ainsley Harriott, Corrie star Georgia May Foote and presenter Jeremy Vine. She was the first female star to be announced for the show.“I’m going to be 40 this year and to be the fittest I’ve ever been at this point in my life would be a great thing,” she admits. “It’ll be a challenge – but I want to see what my body is capable of. If I said ‘no’ Linda Carter would never forgive me.”

he has been on the show since it began in 2011 and has become one of the most stylish Made In Chelsea girls. Now Rosie, who has a fashion range available at Lipstick Boutique, is branching out into beauty with the launch of her new nail polish range, Nailed London. Despite being on a reality show, Rosie, 25, says she likes to keep some things private. “I never signed up to the show to give my life away,” she says. “And also, the people that I date aren’t show-appropriate. “It sounds really silly but the people who date on the show want to be doing magazine shoots at home with their boyfriend or girlfriend. They want to be doing all of that – I’ll leave it to them.” Here, Rosie tells TV Extra her top beauty and style advice and reveals what’s coming up next.

Have you learnt any tricks or good tips from the other MIC girls or make-up artists you’ve worked with? I’ve been introduced to Embryolisse moisturiser. It’s amazing on dry skin and really makes you glow. It’s a make-up artist’s secret! What’s your top beauty budget buy? Optrex Brightening Eye Drops – they really do transform tired eyes and make them bright, which is what you want for a photo shoot or ﬁlming. What’s your biggest beauty mistake? Wearing too much make-up. I am lucky to not get spots, so I ﬁnd it is best to keep my make-up simple, but invest in lipsticks. Why did you want to want to develop your nail range, Nailed London? For as long as I can remember, nail varnish has been something that I have been obsessed with. I probably change my nail colour around twice a week and it has become a major part of my beauty routine. ‘Dressing for yourself is the important thing – feeling confident from within is what I find truly inspiring’

What are your top beauty tips? Drink lots of water. My mother has always told me this. It’s so important to keep your skin hydrated. When I am dehydrated, I can instantly tell, because my face looks tired and dull instead of glowing.

I change my colour purely to co-ordinate with an outfit, as having polished nails is the perfect way to complete your look. I have always seen having manicured nails as part of my outfit and, if I’m wearing a simple outfit, a bright nail is also a great way to add some colour to your look! What’s good about this range? I wanted to create a range with a high-tech formulation as well as amazing colours. I know when I see a good nail varnish from years of painting my own nails, so a colour that lasted without chipping was essential for me. When developing the Nailed London launch collection, I tried to bring in colours from my life and my own inspiration into the collection. I was inspired by everything around me, from the pink of a rose, the grey from a dress on the London Fashion Weekend catwalk and even the name of my dog, Noodle! How important is it to you to have a manicure and pedicure? For me, a mani and pedi is part of a clean, polished look. It’s an important part of my beauty routine that I have never neglected. Your hands, especially, are always on display so it’s always good to make a great impression! What are your top style dos and don’ts? Dressing for yourself is the most important thing you can do. Feeling confident from within is what I find truly inspiring.

Has being in the public eye changed how you feel about your looks? It has made me more aware of myself, I guess. I get told I am pale the whole time, which is an obvious aspect for people to comment on – but I love being pale and totally embrace it! How do you deal with any negative comments? You have to ignore them because, half the time, people are doing it to get a reaction. How do you stay in shape? I go to the gym three times as week if I have time. I’ve learnt to love working out and it’s a huge stress relief for me. I mix it up with weights, boxing and classes at my friend’s gym, Core Collective, which are amazing. Who is your style icon and why? Olivia Palermo is a huge inspiration for putting together the most divine looks. My mother also inspires me to wear more colour and to embrace my decisions. What is your favourite beauty look? I have to say a great mascara, blusher, either a bright lipstick for a night out or a more nude shade for the day and manicured nails. That is how I feel most conﬁdent. What else is coming up for you? I am launching my own jewellery brand mid-October. Watch this space! he famous expression says that eyes are the windows to the soul. We frame them with eye shadows, liners and mascaras but how often do we actually think about looking after our eye health? Most of us will have a regime in place to make sure our skin is looking and feeling its best before we apply our make-up, so why not the same for our eyes? National Eye Health Week begins tomorrow and, with

49 per cent of the UK suffering from general eye ailments each year, it’s time to step up our optical awareness and keep our peepers perfect. The most common eye problems British women suffer from, according to new research by Optrex, are dry eye symptoms such as tired, sore and itchy eyes. Actress Linda Lusardi has suffered from dry eyes for 20 years. “I’ve had to ask them to shoot me from the left or position myself so my streaming red, right eye was hidden from the camera,” she says. And pop star Katy Perry is a big fan of Optrex eye drops, especially with her hectic touring schedule that can often leave her feeling tired and irritable. “They help you look awake and fresh, even when you’re jetlagged and sleepy,” she says. She says, “As an actress I spend hours on stage under bright lights, reading scripts, sending emails and travelling on planes – conditions that create the perfect storm of dryness and irritation for my eyes.” Dry eyes can be caused by a whole host of daily lifestyle and environmental factors, such as staring at our computer and TV screens all day, air con and simply suffering from general tiredness. Eye expert Dr Daniel Sister explains that there are various symptoms that link to dry eyes, “Having dry eyes is a common and uncomfortable problem. It occurs when the eyes do not make enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This causes a disruption to the tear film or lipid layer – the thin layer of tear, which usually protects the eyes. The eyes then feel dry, become inflamed, red, swollen, irritated and itchy.” Dry eyes may not seem a big issue, but over half of women in their prime believe that having a solution to relieve symptoms would make life more comfortable. And it is stopping over a fifth of women from wearing make-up. Almost half of women admit to not following an eye-care regime, with just as many not seeking any advice about their eye conditions. We asked an expert for top tips to keep our eyes feeling good.

Getting enough Vitamin K through fresh fruits, vegetables, ﬁsh and eggs also provides nourishment to prevent dark circles and puffy eyes,” he says. Water yourself well: “It is important to drink two litres of water a day to keep the body moisturised from inside out so that whenever our eyes need moisture, our body is able to provide it,” he says. “Dehydrating drinks such as coffee, tea and alcohol should not be drunk in excess.” Think to blink: Nick says, “Blink exercises are designed to strengthen the eye lid muscles and moisturise the surface of the eye. Try blinking the eyes multiple times while rotating the eyeballs in a circular motion for a minute or two. Try using a hot or cold compress to help prevent puffiness too.”

TO BE VAIN!’ Former Westlife singer Shane Filan on bankruptcy and bouncing back

s part of Irish boy band Westlife, Shane Filan sold an incredible 46 million records before the group decided to call it quits in 2012. But just as the band was about to retire, Shane announced he had gone bankrupt. All his hard earned cash from the group had been invested in property, which was badly hit by the recession. After licking his wounds, Shane made a comeback – this time as a solo act with his well-received debut album, You And Me. And now he’s about to release his second, titled Right Here. Shane, 36, who lives with his wife of 12 years, Gillian, and their children, Nicole, 10, Patrick, seven, and Shane, ﬁve, has stayed in his hometown of Sligo in Ireland.

Here, he tells TV Extra why he enjoys being a solo star, who inspires him and what was his biggest-ever purchase. Why did you decide on the ballad Me And The Moon as your first single from the album? It best represents where I’m at musically. It’s a ballad with a waltz tempo; it has an infectious melody and a big chorus. It’s a powerful song and I want to sing powerful songs. Does Right Here differ from your first album? On the last album, I wrote more about personal experiences and I got a bit too absorbed into my own life. This time I wanted to write about everybody’s life, from break-ups to losing a dad or even a dog – I try to write songs with universal meanings. It’s also more pop and ballad based than the last album. What is the best thing about going solo? It’s a lot quicker to make decisions. But it adds extra pressure when you have to make them on your own. No matter what you do in a band, there will be someone who wants to do something different to you, so you have to learn how to adapt. We agreed and disagreed but Westlife still lasted for 14 years.

on telly all the time, I like feeling good in a suit. And it’s partly my job to be vain. I like looking well for Gillian too. Who has the biggest wardrobe, you or Gillian? Probably me. I change my wardrobe a lot. If I wear a shirt too much, I’ll have to get rid of it but luckily I’m in this business where I get clothes and outfits to wear. I have to look on trend. Where are all your platinum discs and awards? I have a couple of them in my house, my mum has some of them, others are in storage. There are so many of them. I don’t want the house to be covered in Westlife discs, so I have one big disc showing we sold 46 million albums, it reminds me how lucky I was with what we did. It inspires me to keep going and I hope to have a solo platinum disc of my own one day. Do you have any regrets? I try not to regret too much because it’ll only annoy me. But if I could rewind the clock would I have invested all my money in property? No, I would have left it in the bank. But I thought I was doing the right thing. I didn’t think I could lose, but I did lose very badly; I lost everything. Now if I earn money I keep it or put it to good use. What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought? Way back at the height of Westlife, I spent a few hundred thousand pounds on a helicopter and kept it for about a year and a half. I flew it a couple of times but only with a pilot, not on my own. Then I had my first child, Nicole, and I didn’t like the idea of her being anywhere near it, so I sold it. Are you a domestic god? No. Gillian is the cook in our house – I can only do a fry up. My idea of a perfect Sunday is to get up in the morning, have a coffee, go for a walk with the kids on the beach, come back home and have a big family cooked meal like a stew. Do you worry where you sit in the world of music? I don’t really – as long as I can be successful, be happy and have a career. If I was playing 200-seater venues then I wouldn’t be happy with that, because I don’t think that’d be good enough. The last tour I was playing 2,000 seaters and, as a solo artist, you have to pay your dues and have a few albums behind you before you play arenas. I don’t want to have a big career for three years and then fall away. I want to be playing concerts when I’m 60. Are there any Westlife songs you’ll never sing again? I like singing a lot of them; I did six or seven on the tour last year. But the ones down the pecking order would be Seasons In The Sun, I Have A Dream or The Rose. But You Raise Me Up, Flying Without Wings and What About Now? are my favourites. How do you stay fit? I like to run three or four days a week on the beach. I don’t like running on treadmills as it’s boring. I try and eat in moderation and drink a lot of water. I’ve lost weight lately from eating only when I’m hungry. I don’t snack as much as I used to. How vain are you? I can be quite vain, yeah, but I like to look natural. I’m not into Botox or anything like that, but I like to keep myself in shape. Because I’m

We loved the garlic prawns and crispy squid – and the gorgeous views of the illuminated old fort. Or head to Bambuddha for a decadent dining experience. Enjoy a 10-course tasting menu sitting under a canopy of bamboo surrounded by Buddha statues and palm trees. Highlights included the scallops with wasabi and crab legs. Abbey Clancy and her husband Peter Crouch are fans and an episode of TOWIE was filmed here. WHERE CAN I PARTY? While Ibiza may be famous for its superclubs, there are also plenty of chic beach clubs where you can either party

or relax. Leonardo DiCaprio has hung out at Blue Marlin in Cala Jondal, Las Salinas attracts the likes of Jade Jagger, while Kate Moss has partied at Sa Trinxa. Beachouse on Playa d’en Bossa is a popular newcomer, while El Chiringuito Es Cavallet has a lovely position on a picturesque bay. Our favourite, though, was Amante Beach Club, with its wonderfully secluded setting on its own private cove. We arrived in time to enjoy a sundowner before tucking into some grilled fish at a candlelit table looking out at the sea.

WHERE CAN I STAY? Check into Hotel Es Vivé to be close to the action of Ibiza Town, but also within walking distance of Playa d’en Bossa – a lovely beach bar-lined stretch of sand. The stylish boutique hotel has a Miami vibe, with an Art Deco design complete with all-white facade, aquamarine wooden shutters and a palm-fringed pool. Despite its boutique size, Es Vivé has a lovely spa and is home to a stylish restaurant called Deco. We loved the new all-white rooftop terrace, where we sipped cocktails and soaked in the wonderful views of Ibiza Town and Formentera, Ibiza’s tiny sister isle.

The X Factor 7pm, ITV So, we’ve survived the last few weeks of auditions. We have heard some fantastic singers but, to be frank, we’ve also seen some rather questionable performers put through. And where have they been put through to? A large country house in the middle of nowhere! Tonight’s episode is the ﬁrst of two Boot Camp specials in which those who have been granted access to the next round face another series of challenges. Here, they have not only got to impress on their own but impress as part of a group too. Because of the pesky rugby World Cup, the Boot Camp

is spread across this Sunday and the following one before the most controversial part of The X Factor begins – the six-chair challenge. Love it or hate it (and we must admit, we love it) that’s the stage where the remaining contestants sing for the ﬁnal half a dozen places at the judges’ houses. So expect tears aplenty when they think they’ve made it, only to be usurped by someone better than them. The judges’ houses stage also has a twist this year – they’re going to be broadcast live for the ﬁrst time in the show’s history. And we can’t wait for that one! +++++

Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Biggest Adventures with Bear Grylls 9pm, ITV While Bearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new series doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the excitement of The Island or Running Wild, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a certain charm about it that we are enjoying. This second episode ďŹ nds Bear exploring one of Englandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most iconic landscapes up in the Yorkshire Dales. The intrepid hunkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adventure starts at one of the best limestone formations in the world, Malham Cove. There he meets a geographer who reveals that 350 million years ago, the high limestone pavement they are standing on was actually under a tropical ocean, that was pushed upwards by volcanic eruptions. On the

next part of his trek, Bear gets up close and personal with a cliff face, abseiling down the 250ft drop of the cove. The terrifying descent is the result of ten million years of rock formation and he ends up in a duel with professional climber Steve McClure, a ďŹ nger-holding competition to see who can cling on to the wall for the longest. Bear then hikes across Gordale Scar to see an extremely rare algae called Rivularia, an organism that breathed life into the planet over three billion years ago. Plus, he also visits a waterfall where salmon jump up against the current. +++,,

So tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the night they have to pull out all the stops if they want to make it into the semis. The ďŹ ve remaining bakers have to work their way through childhood favourites and delicate French fancies before facing a monster choux pastry masterpiece. First off, they begin with a brief to create 24 cream horns for the signature challenge. But preparing two different ďŹ&#x201A;avoured cream horns isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough for one ambitious baker who also makes two different types

of pastry, while another hopes to appeal to Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inner child by making a banana and custard ďŹ lling. Then Mary sets Mokatines as the technical challenge â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they are squares of light genoise sponge ďŹ lled with coffee buttercream and then decorated with two types of icing. But the bakers soon discover that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ďŹ ddly little challenge. For the showstopper they have to create a Religieuse Ă Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Ancienne.
