PROJECT REFRESH

A CONNECTICUT COUNTRY HOUSE TOUR

Welcome I call my style Country House Style because my home, Connecticut Country House, is as much a character in my stories as I am. Country House Style is a feeling of warmth and welcome, down to earth and elegant. It rolls with the rhythm of the seasons. It has an easy grace, and it’s surprisingly simple to switch on. It makes you feel happy and creative, content and refreshed, surrounded by beauty, and most important, at home—no matter where you live. My Country House inspired me to turn ideas I loved into a reality I love even more and I'm so happy that we get to explore this passion together. Welcome to the Design Issue: an up-close and personal look at a transformation a year in the making—the one we called Project Refresh. Project Refresh was born in spring 2015, though I didn’t know it. I planned to change one room. One. Fast-forward a year, and not a room on the first floor was untouched as we raced to be ready for the Newtown Historical Society's House & Garden Tour. And in between was a lot of work, vision, and perseverance.

NORA MURPHY Founder and Editor in Chief

Some of you were able to join us for the June tour—what a wonderful surprise! But if you weren't, we thought it would be fun to take the tour to you. Enjoy!! Love,

250 YEARS NEW This is the oldest part of the house and my favorite. I wanted to honor it, let it shine—and spend a lot more time there! Finding its new purpose led to all the changes in Project Refresh.

A true room for living. This was the dining room. With imagination, elbow grease, and a brighter palette, now it’s our family hub.

Begin with the right

plan.

The fireplace is the natural focal point,

with seating grouped all around. The tone is airy and intimate, pure, simple, and honest. Editing was not easy, but only things that really fit the vibe could make the cut. The effort was worth it!

It’s fun to play with textures. A stack of vintage wicker hampers adds smart, stylish storage; pillows and throws bring interest to a white on white palette; and a salvaged boat’s bumper is an unexpected sculpture. 16

Authentic details are the key to our mood. New creamy-white mats were all it took to freshen up a set of 18th century engravings from London.

Scale up to do more with less. Paring back leaves room for bigger things, like these super-sized sconces from Ethan Allen and a pair of thriving potted foxgloves.

1. A fantastic find from the famed Elephant's Trunk flea market; I love the scale and graphic nature of this hand-lettered sign. 2. Our comfy old sofa and chair got makeovers in custom-made white denim slipcovers. 3. Stacked wicker hampers add storage and textural interest. 4. Potted foxgloves help set the scale and bring a bit of the outdoors in. 5. A new wicker chair from Home Goods looks wonderfully old and worn. 6. The pillow covers are a patchwork of Turkish textiles. 7. My clear glass lamps feel light and airy here despite their very large size—pretty and practical. 8. A seeded glass jar makes an excellent and attractive catch-all for beloved bits and pieces.

Keep it simple and charm will follow: cotton twill ribbon is a pretty accent on the durable denim slipcovers and keeps them snugly in place; the weathered vintage windowbox—a flea market find I couldn’t resist—lives inside now as a versatile container for a variety of displays. 30

Nora’s Notes 1. Functional focal point Around the corner from the main seating area, a stylish black stepback cupboard houses our TV and plenty more while anchoring this space.

1

2. Form and scale A set of naturally bleached elk antlers are the same color as the wall. Mounted high, they bring in dimension and a whimsical, modern sculptural appeal—they’re there, but they’re kind-of not! 3. Balancing act The black cupboard would throw off the visual balance of the room if not for the large black 19th century barn lantern on the opposite wall. 4. Get centered Our square weathered gray table defines the center of the space, and the wing chairs look just right arranged around it. 5. The cover story Denim slipcovers with twill ribbon ties are as rugged and hard-working as they are stylish. And when they need freshening up, just toss them in the washer! 6. Finders, keepers Found objects like the vintage birdhouse and the weathered basket that holds the potted hollyhock add a personal, whimsical touch.

Nora’s Notes 1. Drop-leaf pick-me-up An antique drop-leaf table is a wonderfully versatile size, equally up to potting work or serving as an impromptu bar. I gave it its white, weathered finish in keeping with our outdoorsy theme. 2. It’s showtime My French harvest basket comes down easily to be filled with a dramatic display of whatever’s fresh and in season.

5

4

3. Curiouser & curiouser A corner cupboard from the 1700s is our family’s Cabinet of Curiosities—a work of art filled with natural wonders from our travels. 4. Something old, something new Two Chinese Chippendale-style chairs with lots of wear-through sport new, apron-inspired denim slipcover seats. 5. A bug’s life A pair of antique insect engravings from The Paris Flea Market is right at home in our garden Gallery. 6. Check mates The painted checkerboard brings rustic charm to what lies beneath – 1970s yellow oak floorboard – and ties The Gallery cleanly to the kitchen, which has the same treatment.

Nora’s Notes 1. Pennyslvania touch A very old, barn-red Pennsylvania pantry holds our everyday dishes and adds honest country charm.

3

2. Out of sight Our dishwasher and a sink are tucked away in this alcove. It lets us tidy as we go without interrupting the flow of a party. 3. Hanging out A handmade peg rack holds our aprons by the back door. Underneath them all, it’s a lovely green shade of milk paint.

2

4. Rest stop An overscaled Windsor armchair is a comfortable seat for visitors (or one tired chef!). 5. Useful beauty We added dark green paint and a raised base to put this Victorian cabinet to work as a small secondary island that can be moved wherever we need it.

5

4 NORAMURPHYCOUNTRYHOUSE.COM

Pieces chosen for their patina add another layer of style and of course they’re practical too. The 18th century French cupboard—a gift on our first wedding anniversary—is our food pantry.

Design Snippets 1 & 2. Open shelves are a collection’s best friend. 3. Vintage harvest baskets are kitchen-appropriate and plenty charming. 4. A different kind of harvest basket is a striking and graphic wall hanging. 5. I keep my antique cutting board collection close to the workspace and stacked by size. 6. A kitchen refresh calls for fresh spices. Penzey’s makes outstanding spices, and they look great too. 7. Keep herbs growing year round, if you can! Greenery is always a welcome touch, and fresh is best. 8. An overscaled, sculptural chandelier takes full advantage of the room’s high ceiling.

RUSTIC ELEGANCE An exciting opportunity to reimagine a space completely: this room was our family hub before Project Refresh. A new approach to color leads the way, and harmony in the details makes the look stick together and stand out.

1. A pair of elegant Seafoam roses in weathered buckets balances the display. 2. This 18th century European wood mural panel gives character to the space above the table. 3. Rope handles add texture and an earthy touch. 4. Annie Sloan chalk paint (color: French Linen) refreshed and updated an 18th century worktable that gets lots of use today. 5. There’s no substitute for time and the elements to create the personality and character of a natural patina. 6. A hand-painted chest brings color into the scene and adds welcome, convenient storage. 7. I ♼ my oyster ball! Every room has at least one coastal touch in it. The shells on the dining table come and go, but this piece stays put. 8. This weathered basket blends the gray tones and the warm wood tones that saturate this space.

We gave the chandelier a subtle color to highlight its striking

form.

It’s quite large, and even though it’s perfect for the space, its original darker tone made it seem too heavy. Light paint and a weathered finish re-set the scale.

NORAMURPHYCOUNTRYHOUSE.COM

73

Before

Quite a transformation!

We painted this room a deep gray green

when we first moved in; it was our family room, so we wanted it to feel cozy and knock down the light a bit for TV-watching purposes. But now? The brighter the better! 74

The closet as a styling

Our coat closet is really more of a coat corner, open to both the hallway and the family room, so it needs to be neat and organized, with plenty of personality.

Nora’s Notes 5

1. A worn welcome The mantle, basket, and picture frame all have soft, worn white finishes in varying degrees. 2. The golden rule Gilded accents add a touch of luxury and formality but it’s important to always have a sense of play (see: gilded fish weathervane)!

7

3. Magic multiplies Have I mentioned that a collection unified by color and theme is a surefire winner? Bleached seashells and corals above the fireplace are the center of attention here. 4. Irish ayes Who could say anything but yes to this gorgeous table? From its last home in an old Irish farmhouse to our beloved Connecticut Country House, it’s a gem with its simple form and humble, rustic charm.

4

5. Candle power The fixture is a French army campaign reproduction chandelier. They were made with detachable arms to be easily packed away and rehung in an officer’s tent, and like the original, ours is candle power only. I love the intimacy and the light it casts. 6. Summer love Fresh white denim slipcovers reinforce the room’s summer coastal vibe. 7. In the mix A hodgepodge of 19th century chairs, all in black with gilded touches, all with rush or caned seats, work beautifully together in tone and in scale. 91

Nora’s Notes 3

1. Suite dreams Our Ethan Allen Quincy bed is a bold and graphic anchor to the room. The black finish gives it a modern touch, but it has an unmistakably New England vibe. 2. Light, bright Sticking with white bedding lets me mix up the elements: soft cotton, crisp linen, quilted floral matelassé, handkerchief lace edges, ruffles— it’s a fresh look and an easy foundation to build on.

1

3. Home to roost A pair of pretty (and big!) 18th century bird engravings from Paris has a happy home above our bed. Bleached wood frames and white mats let the birds seem to float in place. 4. Plum lovely Large clear glass plum jar lamps, also from Ethan Allen, balance the bed wall without taking up too much visual space. 5. Being shelf-ish When I designed The Coop’s library wall, I knew I wanted something simple, strong, and utilitarian—like the shelving from a century-old general store—and something large enough to house our ever-growing book collection! 6. Floor show A 10' x 14' jute rug creates a light and casual foundation, brings in a bit of texture, and has a summery vibe all year long.

Unifying elements with color.

The room needed

something big and imposing to balance the library wall, and we needed storage. We bought a formerly built-in 1990s-era cabinet from the home of a dear friend, and I turned again to Annie Sloan's chalk paint to transform it. (You can see I tried out a few colors before deciding on a white a touch creamier than the walls— think white chocolate. It looks scrumptious!) NORAMURPHYCOUNTRYHOUSE.COM

Nora’s Notes 4

1. Green is good Myrtle topiaries flank the mirror on the washbasin cabinet and baby boxwoods in a wicker basket soak up the sunshine on the window seat.

1

2

2. Wetter is better The cabinet was a dry sink from the 1800s—when we got it, a bittersweet orange color, and clearly well used. We painted it the same color as the walls and fitted it with two basins. It offers plenty of storage and reinforces The Coop's rustic, country nature. 3. Up in lights A large wall, a large mirror…we knew we needed large lighting fixtures. A pair of reproduction French station lanterns—the originals would have been used outdoors—was perfect on our grand scale. 4. All fenced in When we found it, The Coop had interior walls made of picket fence. We repurposed them for our shower enclosure. I love its outdoor shower stall look. 5. A good get There are vintage finds throughout the room, but the mirror tops them all. Originally a copper casement window from the Flatiron Building in Manhattan (the chains are still in place on the sides), this mirror is an absolute showstopper. 6. Consistency is key A white denim slipcover and jute rug create a beautiful stylistic flow between the bedroom and bathroom areas.

119
