To the pupils and adults who have been involved in AC4SL Active Citizenship for Sustainable Learning has mobilized many pupils, parents, teachers, other school staff and lot of energy in France, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain and UK. For all of us, AC4SL has been a very important project because in our schools there are quite a lot of pupils who meet difficulties of learning, associated often with social difficulties, in an environment where cultural backgrounds are sometimes limited. In this perspective, This Erasmus plus project represents a real chance for all concerned pupils in the eight partner schools involved. Indeed, it has allowed them to discover the partner countries, to meet other European citizens of their age and build bridges of friendship, to participate in authentic European language exchanges, to discover our common heritage and build a European identity on our common values. Whatever our beliefs, regardless of our cultural differences and the ways of seeing and doing to which they lead us, it seems to us that we all share the concern and the desire to better educate and train our pupils, to thus offer them a better future. A future where the idea of Europe is not just an idea but a concrete reality they have experienced, particularly thanks to the active citizenship cultural language camps we have organized in Italy, United Kingdom and Spain. These different meetings have shown us that we already share questions, and we have similar difficulties to find the right answers. They have also showed us that we can advance our thinking and our practices together. Stronger and closer links, which go beyond the framework of this project, have been created between many of us, pupils as well as adults, sign of the need we feel to become close to each other and move forward together in this direction. I would also stress the importance of being able to break our isolation through different approaches of European countries, to allow all these youngsters to become familiar with other European cultures, to change the way they perceive others and to be open to the world around them, to change attitudes and help succeed as many pupils as possible. I should therefore like to thank all the pupils and adults who have allowed this extraordinary European adventure to exist: their commitment, their determination, and their willingness to share and build together have been the keys of the success we have encountered during these three years. There are actually 3 simple ways to save the enviroment around you. 1. Reduce – Keep something to a minimum if it is not necessary 2. Reuse – Got empty plastic bottles or similar? Reuse them or be creative and make something!
3. Recycle – Got something recyclable that you don’t need? Don’t just throw it in a ordinary trash bin! There are special containers for that.

Illumina ng Waste We were invited to take part in an event designed to improve the local town centre shop windows over the Christmas Period. The project was called Illumina ng Waste. Our brief was to design, produce and illuminate the shop windows by crea ng a display. The theme of the display had to be “what does our local environment mean to us?” and made en rely of clean waste donated by local companies. We were supported in this with a group called OASES which promotes outdoor learning and global sustainability. They came in and spoke to us about the project and how to improve sustainability. We had three half day sessions to introduce the theme of what the local environment means to us, decide upon the window display and then create it. We decided to create a skate park but with animals using it instead of humans to look at how we impact on the lives of animals as well as our neighbours. We chose a skate park as we have one next to the school which can some mes be full of li er and we needed to make people aware of the issue. The project was extra special this year as it formed part of the Derwent Valley Area Ac on Partnership’s Christmas fes vi es (and was part of the Ch ristmas lights switch on) in the town centre. The displays stayed in the shop windows, for passers -by to admire, for a week a er the event. Taking part in the event really got us to think about how we can contribute to making our local environment a nicer place and the amount of rubbish we waste and could actually re-use. “I enjoyed making the skate park.I liked finding different materials to work with”Elisha E “I enjoyed the Illumina ng Waste project because it was crea ve and it was fun”Kaitlin C “I enjoyed the Illumina ng Waste project because I got to switch on the lights and we worked as a team” Anthony H “The illumina ng waste project was fun because we got to design local animals and our skate park”Jessica S “I enjoyed the Illumina ng Waste project because we got to make animals and a skate which represented our local environment”. (Tyler F.)
Plan ng trees In February we took we visited the Allensford where the Woodland trust was doing work to look a er to the wood which is there. The Woodland Trust is the UK's largest woodland conserva on charity. It has over 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,000 sites all over the UK. They stand up for woods and trees. They protect and campaign on behalf of this country’s woods, plant more trees, and restore ancient woodland, for the benefit of wildlife and people and their vision is to see a UK rich in woods and trees, enjoyed and valued by everyone. This was a fantas c opportunity to see how this organisa on works to look a er our woodland and what we can do to help. While we were there we not only got to look at the types of tr ee and what the Trust does to look a er woodland, we also got to plant tress ourselves and see how this could help the animals which live there too.
“I enjoyed tree plan ng because we were helping the environment” - Jessica S “I enjoyed the tree plan ng because it will give the animals a new environment” - Kaitlin C “I enjoyed the tree plan ng because we got to learn about things out of school!” - Elisha E “I enjoyed the tree plan ng because we got to go out of school and we were helping the env ironment” Anthony H “I enjoyed the tree plan ng because it helps the environment and we had a trip out” - Adam D “I enjoyed the tree plan ng because it was fun digging holes and it helps the birds” - Ethan M Facts we learnt: ·
Just 13% of the UK is covered with trees. That’s low compared to the average European country that has 37%.
·
The woodland has been reducing since the 1930s.
·
Today the woodland just covers 2% of the UK.
·
The effects are devasta ng: 60% of our animal and plant species have declined in the past 50 years. Many are now endangered; some face ex nc on. Written by: Bri sh students
