bridal Your Guide to Bridal Professionals in the East Bay As the summer wedding season heats up, East Bay Bridal’s thoughts turn to the fall with our first Charity Wedding Gown Event – “A Match Made in Heaven” which will take place on October 12th at the Pleasanton Doubletree (formerly the Pleasanton Hilton). This combined bridal fair and charity wedding gown sale will raise funds for our partner charity – The Women’s Cancer Resource Center (www.WCRC.net). The center provides services for women with cancer throughout the East Bay. We are thrilled to partner with such a wonderful organization and look forward to working with them in the future. Mark your calendar for October 12th. Come as a vendor, come to find a dress or come to just support a good cause. For more information on this event, give us a call at 510-886-1317, or send us an email to events@urlocalbride.com. We’ll see you there! We are pleased to introduce the East Bay’s newest wedding venue in our July issue, Memorial Stadium, at UC Berkeley. The newly renovated Memorial Stadium served as the setting for “Jenni & Gabe’s” May 31st wedding. The newly married couple were members of the CAL marching band and decided to make their wedding a remembrance of this happy time. With a backdrop of the Berkeley and SF Skylines this unique venue is sure to create an unforgettable setting for your wedding or next corporate event. Give them a call at 510-642-2730 to see about reserving this fantastic space. Remember to keep your copy of East Bay Bridal handy. Use it throughout your wedding planning to help make all your decisions easier. Visit our website (www. EastBayBridal.com) often for tips, contests and events throughout the East Bay and to find the most comprehensive list of LOCAL vendors. And remember always to Find Your Inspiration......Locally!

Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding A step-by-step guide to help keep the stars in your eyes, your feet on the ground, and your wedding plans on track.
Women who tackle wedding planning pragmatically — as if it were a work-related project — tend to survive the process with greater ease. Think of yourself as a project manager. Establish an overall framework for completing the work, and set specific intermediate deadlines, schedules and goals. Taken one small step at a time, the detail-laden job becomes less overwhelming. Here is our suggested timetable for the steps you should take in the months, weeks and days leading up to your wedding.
9-12 months before your wedding
• Change your Facebook status to “Engaged” • Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church, temple or mosque or in a religious service at home, clear the date and time with your clergy. • Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and wedding-related parties, and who pays for what. • Enlist help. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t stretch that far, ask relatives and close friends to assist you in specific tasks – selecting a dress, interviewing caterers, locating a reception site – especially in areas where you feel you need support. • Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. • Reserve your reception site. • Decide on your color scheme. • Choose your wedding attendants. • Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. • Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. • Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. • Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and bakers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning app.
6-9 months before your wedding
• Choose your caterer. Remember to get a written contract. • Book your photographer and/or videographer. • Choose your musician(s).
6 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2014
• Send out Save-the-Dates • Select your baker and order the cake. • Choose your florist. • Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. • Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. • Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for the thank-you notes you’ll need to write.
4 months before your wedding
• Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. • Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their wedding-day attire. • Select music for your ceremony and reception. • Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. • Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. • Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. • Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. • Make appointments for gown fittings. • Check the requirements for a marriage license. • Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.
3 months before your wedding
• Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. • Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day. • Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. • Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. • Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. • Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. • Select your “going away” outfit and special items for

• Get your marriage license. • Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs. • Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer. • Keep writing those thank-you notes on a daily basis! • If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards. • Check with your florist to confirm dates and times of flower deliveries. • Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers. • Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts. Fill out change-ofaddress forms at the post office. • Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you want taken of the bridal party, as well as

Think outside the Envelope!
Evites: Makes RSVPing a breeze for everyone. All the guest has to do is click yes or no, and all you have to do is check the response count. Offers more creative options. Evites can be in traditional text format, a picture or collection of pictures, or even, for the extra fun couple, a video invitation. Saves paper. Evites require no postage, and they don’t use paper like printed invitations.
VS.
Traditional Invitations:
Makes a great keepsake. Digital invitations last only as long as your hard drive. A traditional invitation can be stored and kept as a lovely keepsake from your special day, and included in your wedding album. Are more easily noticed. Some people don’t check their email often, or only skim their inbox. A traditional invitation comes in the mail, and offer more visibility than its digital counterpart. Are easier for all guests. Not everyone has an email address. A traditional invitation, on the other hand, is almost guaranteed to be seen by everyone. BY THOMAS VIOLA 9 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2014

“ I Do”
Brides Say By Michelle Olson
B
illy Idol’s “White Wedding” was a hit in 1982, but more than 30 years later, that trend has come and gone. And so has the plain, white wedding shoe. More brides are putting their personal stamp on the shoes that will strut them down the aisle. “It’s really rare to do the white satin shoe anymore,” said Jennifer Nelson, alteration’s manager at Janene’s Bridal of Alameda. “It’s all about your own personal touch and being comfortable.” The bridal shoe is not only an important piece of the wedding day decor and dreams, but it has to fit with the dress. Either underneath it, or accent it, if a shorter dress style is desired. Shania Shanks, bridal consultant and sales representative at Kayla’s Bridal in Castro Valley, tells brides to find their shoes first if they want a custom-made dress. That way all measurements, designs, and colors will fit together. Even for brides who are buying off the rack, Shanks says more brides are getting lower shoes fitted with their wedding dresses to compliment changing into flats for the reception. Just because they’re flats, and no one can see them, doesn’t mean they can’t be stylish. Zebra stripes, leopard prints, and polka dot patterns are demonstrating the motto “fashion never sleeps,” even under layers of lace. TOMS wedges, in all colors, cowgirl boots, and husband-matching Converse are also creating some buzz this wedding season. Many ceremonies take place on grass, and uneven footing in heels can lead to accidents. Stilettos and grass do not live happily ever after together. Oakland resident, Kerri Sundeen, got married this past May at a Davis winery. From the moment she got engaged she knew she would need a functional wedding shoe. Her father suffered a stroke and walks with a cane. She had to get something stable, yet classy. Her final decision: nude wedges that hid under her long Pronovias wedding gown.
To a Different Kind of Shoe “My situation is unique, I had to pick shoes that were stable enough to walk my handicapped dad and I down the aisle,” said Sundeen. No matter what type of wedding or bride, who doesn’t love a little Jimmy Choo in their step? The brand will forever be the standard for the fancy wedding shoe. “The girl that wants the fancier shoes is doing sparkly Jimmy Choos,” said Nelson of this year’s wedding shoe trend. The complication of buying an expensive, fancy wedding shoe is wearing them after the big day. This was a problem bride and admitted shoe lover Amy Heppe refused to deal with. She didn’t care about trends, she just wanted something timeless. She wore Tiffany blue, round, toe pumps with a jeweled toe. They were on full display as she walked down the aisle this past May in a knee-length wedding gown. “I wanted something that 20 years from now, I’d still think were the cutest things ever,” she said. “ I definitely think people should wear what they love, and I don’t think those shoes should just die in a box.” Elizabeth Hill had her ceremony at the Dunsmuir Mansion in Oakland during the summer wedding season. Open-toe, champagne-pink pumps with flower, diamond brooches on the toe strap showed off her pink nail polish. None of the guests saw her shoes or her nail polish because she wore a long dress with five foot train. “It was sad that most people didn’t see them because of my dress, but I knew what I was wearing and that’s all that counted,” said Hill. “I don’t know much about the shoe trends, but I do know that shoes are very important to a bride, even if nobody but the bride can see them.” While brides search for their glass slipper either by land, sea, or website, they may want to take some wedding shoe advice from Bride Amy. “Get hitched, wear them dancing, and wear them out. That’s the only way to properly honor an amazing shoe.”

Marriage Licenses
By Lindsay Gower
It’s the must-have accessory for every bride: A Marriage License! So let’s review the basics you need to know about getting licensed to wed.
GETTING THE LICENSE
Both bride and groom must go, in person together, to a County Clerk’s office. In California, you can go to the Clerk’s Office in any county; it does not need to be the county in which you are having the wedding. Neither of you needs to be a California resident to apply for a California marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is required and there is no waiting period: You apply, pay, and receive the license then and there.
You both must:
• Be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger, you need consent of parent or guardian. • Bring a government- issued valid picture ID (such as a driver’s license) that includes your full legal name and date of birth. • If you have been married before, bring Proof of Dissolution. You cannot apply for a marriage license if you are married, even if your divorce is almost final.
What to Do With the License
You receive an unsigned license. Here’s what happens to make it an official wedding certificate: • The license is good anywhere in California, regardless of which county issued it. It’s valid for 90 days. If 90 days pass before a wedding ceremony, you must get a new license. • Before the wedding, give the license to the person who’ll officiate at the ceremony. The officiant is required to review the license before conducting the ceremony. It’s a good id a to bring it to the rehearsal for go over it with the officiant, and of course bring it to the wedding. • After the ceremony, the officiant will complete and sign the license, and have it signed by bride, groom and at least one witness. • The officiant will return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days of the ceremony, so it can be officially recorded. Once recorded, you can buy a copy of your wedding certificate (depending on the county, you don’t receive one automatically).
Where to Apply in the East Bay
In both Contra Costa and Alameda you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Their offices close at 4:30, so they request you arrive by 4:00 to have time to complete the paperwork.
Contra Costa County Clerk 555 Escobar Street Martinez CA 925-646-2360
Alameda County Clerk-Recorder 1106 Madison Street Oakland CA 510- 272-6362
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.ccclerkrec.us/clerk/marriage
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.acgov.org/auditor/clerk/ml.htm
The fee is $86 for the license, payable by cash or debit card. You can get a copy of the marriage certificate, after it is recorded, for $18.
The fee is $81.00 for the license and a certificate of marriage and $17.00 for 1 certificate copy.

Wearing white also dates back to Victorian
Wearing white also dates back to Victorian times when Queen Victoria abandoned the usual royal tradition of wearing a silver gown, instead choosing to wear white. before that time brides simply wore their best gown rather than a special wedding dress. The popularity of white can also be attributed to it symbolizing purity and virginity. White was also thought to ward off evil Spirits.
Sharing the first piece of cake Sharing the first piece of wedding cake is a wedding tradition with Roman roots. The Romans believed that by eating the wedding cake together a special bond was created between the couple. The wheat used to bake the cake was symbolic of fertility and a “fruitful union”, While the cake’s sweetness was thought to bring sweetness to all areas of the couple’s new life.

All exotic abroad honeymoons start with the same thing - a passport By Timothy R. Schulte ctw features
As the gray skies of winter creep in, tropical locales become all the more alluring. But couples planning to jet off to a foreign paradise after tying the knot need to get one thing taken care of first: the passport. If you don’t yet have a passport, right now would be a great time to start the application process At the start of November, applications were being processed in four to six weeks (two to three if expedited); during busier travel periods like the summer the wait can be longer - not good if you’re mypassport-needs-to-arrive-soon window is small. So what do you need to do?
1. Complete Form DS-11: Application For A U.S. Passport You must apply in person at an Acceptance Facility, such as a post office, or Passport Agency. Do not sign the form until instructed to do so by the Acceptance Agent. Also, be sure to have all the required documentation, which we’ll get to.
2. Submit Evidence of U.S. Citizenship Evidence of U.S. citizenship must be submitted with Form DS-11, such as: • Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state • Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth • Naturalization Certificate of Citizenship
3. Present Identification Acceptable identification includes: • Naturalization Certificate • Valid Driver’s License • Current Government ID (city, state or federal) • Current Military ID (military and dependents) 4. Submit a Photocopy of the ID Presented Above The front and back side of the ID document on 8.5-by-11 paper
5. Pay the Application Fee Currently the rates are $110 for a Passport Book and $140 for a Passport Book + Passport Card, plus a $25 execution fee.
6. Provide 2 Passport Photos You’ll need two identical 2-by-2 color photos to be used for your passport. Many pharmacy and office-supply stores offer passport-photo services. For specific details, visit travel.state. com. Smile, and enjoy your trip!

It’s a Sweet Life! By Charyn Pfeuffer
What happens when a Hollywood publicity executive swaps agency life for a world filled with butter, milk, sugar and cream? Good Karmal, a confection company, is born. Co-founder Patty Triplett West didn’t stop with simply creating addictively delicious caramel candies. From the very first batch, West set out to inspire their customers to, as Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change we wish to see in the world,” and donates a portion of sales to environmental charities. West’s hand-made all natural flavored and salted caramels come wrapped in feel-good words of wisdom. Melt-in-your-mouth flavors include Vanilla, Sea Salt, Chocolate Sea Salt, Caramel Apple, Café Caramel and Chipotle. Even Oprah featured these sweet treats on her annual “Oprah’s Favorite Things” episode. We love Good Karmal for bridal showers and wedding favors. Couples can create a one-of-a-kind fortunes and customize with whatever names, dates, and images they wish. Our favorite wedding favor pick? Good Karmal’s Personalized Caramel Favor, which comes with two caramels tucked inside an earth-friendly textured cardstock package and finished with a full-color band featuring the details of your special day. For more information, check out www.goodkarmal.com.
