b r i da l Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding A step-by-step guide to help keep the stars in your eyes, your feet on the ground, and your wedding plans on track. Women who tackle wedding planning pragmatically — as if it were a work-related project — tend to survive the process with greater ease. Think of yourself as a project manager. Establish an overall framework for completing the work, and set specific intermediate deadlines, schedules and goals. Taken one small step at a time, the detail-laden job becomes less overwhelming. Here is our suggested timetable for the steps you should take in the months, weeks and days leading up to your wedding. 9-12 months before your wedding • Change your Facebook status to “Engaged” • Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church, temple or mosque or in a religious service at home, clear the date and time with your clergy. • Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and wedding-related parties, and who pays for what. • Enlist help. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t stretch that far, ask relatives and close friends to assist you in specific tasks – selecting a dress, interviewing caterers, locating a reception site – especially in areas where you feel you need support. • Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. • Reserve your reception site. • Decide on your color scheme. • Choose your wedding attendants. • Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. • Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. • Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. • Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and bakers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning app. 6 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2013
6-9 months before your wedding • Choose your caterer. Remember to get a written contract. • Book your photographer and/or videographer. • Choose your musician(s). • Send out Save-theDates • Select your baker and order the cake. • Choose your florist. • Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. • Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. • Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for the thank-you notes you’ll need to write. 4 months before your wedding • Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. • Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their wedding-day attire. • Select music for your ceremony and reception. • Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. • Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. • Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. • Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. • Make appointments for gown fittings. • Check the requirements for a marriage license. • Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers. (Continued)
east bay bridal 3 months before your wedding • Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. • Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day. • Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. • Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. • Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. • Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. • Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau. • Make a date with your photographer for any formal portraits you desire. • Make an appointment to have your hair done just before your portrait session and again the day or so before your wedding. Consider including your bridesmaids in a “day of beauty” before your wedding, with manicures, hair styling, massages and makeup sessions. 2 months before your wedding • Mail out your wedding invitations and announcements. • Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony. • Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. • Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear or even songs you don’t want played. • Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding. • Purchase special accessories for your wedding-day attire. • Plan a luncheon for your bridesmaids. • Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist. • Finalize honeymoon plans. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas. • Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you may need for your wedding license. 1 month before your wedding • Get your marriage license. • Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs. • Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer. • Keep writing those thank-you notes on a daily basis! • If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards. • Check with your florist to confirm dates and times of flower deliveries. • Review your wedding-day transportation plans and
make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers. • Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts. Fill out change-of-address forms at the post office. • Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception. • Review the video plans with your videographer. • Put together welcome bags for out-of-town guests. 2 weeks before your wedding • Keep writing those thank-you notes for wedding gifts! • Pick up your wedding rings. Make sure any special engraving appears precisely as you wished. • Begin packing for honeymoon. 1 week before your wedding • Make out final checks for all your vendors. • Ask a friend or family member to arrange for wedding gifts that may be brought to your reception to be delivered to your home or another safe spot. • Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner. • Reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans. • Arrange for payments to be made to vendors at the agreed-upon time. • Inform your caterer of the final number of guests - Call any guests who haven’t RSVP’d to confirm final head count. The day before your wedding • Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure. • Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner. Have fun! • Turn in early for a good night’s sleep. Your Wedding Day • Allow plenty of time for dressing, makeup and hair styling. • If you plan on photography before the ceremony, allow ample time so you’re not rushed. • Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning. Now it’s time to enjoy. Take a deep breath. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day. Let your joy and happiness shine through. Best wishes!

How to research your photographer’s work to get a true feel of how their style will make your wedding look By Anna Sachse My wedding this past August was truly one of the most beautiful days of my life. The casual elegance of our small farm setting, the best wedding food I’ve ever tasted, our ridiculously hip 1930s jazz band and my manly husband crying as he spoke the vows he wrote himself – these were all parts of a wedding that, for both of us, truly felt like a celebration of who we are rather than a choreographed performance. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some pretty major things that I wish we’d done differently. We should have hired a wedding planner, we should not have chosen a location that necessitated us remodeling it ourselves and, most importantly, we should have spent more time thinking about our photography. When it comes to budgeting, most folks in frenzel studios the wedding business will tell you that photography is the No. 1 area in which you should never skimp. Pictures capture the moment and help shape your memories as time passes. And it’s unlikely that you will ever again be surrounded by so many of your family members and friends at the same time. For this reason, I willingly paid top dollar for our photographer. Don’t get me wrong, I had a great connection with my photographer, which is extremely important as this person will be following you around all day: in the dressing room, watching your ceremony, privy to your most intimate moments. And from the 2,000 or so shots she took on both digital and film, I will certainly be able to build a lovely book. But the problem is that pretty much no one else is happy with the pictures as a whole. Complaints include: too many of the images are out of focus; there are way too many shots of kids; most of the pictures are taken from far away, prioritizing landscape and legs over people’s faces; and, while there are many great shots of Chris and I, there are very few of our friends. What makes me sad is that all of these “problems” could have easily been eliminated if I’d taken the following three steps.
Step 1: Meet with a few photographers I only met with one because I was busy and liked her personality, as well as her work, right away. But if I had also met with other photographers, I might have seen different styles or types of pictures that I preferred. I may have stuck with the first photographer anyway, but I would have been better equipped to provide instruc(Cont) 30 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2013

tion.
Step 2: View as much of their work as possible, including proof sheets When Jon Koch of Jon Koch Photography in St. Louis, first meets with prospective clients, he not only shows them a few long slideshows representing complete wedding books, but he also provides four or five proof books paige & blake green so that they can truly see what an entire wedding looks like from start to finish – that’s 700 photos for one wedding versus 30. He also offers passwords to online galleries so that clients can view additional proof sheets at home without feeling pressure. “If, after seeing over 1,000 images, you’re not seeing enough portraits or posed party pictures, for example, then maybe I’m not the right photographer for you,” says Koch. “I always ask my clients what style and types of pictures are important to them, and I will try to accommodate them as best as possible, but, in the end, you can’t really change the way you view an event and how’d you choose to capture it.” Remember that photographers are professionals; they are artists each with their own distinct style. The responsibility is yours to determine if it meets your needs. I wish I’d thought to ask for proof sheets because they might have keyed me in on trends in my photographer’s style that were later problematic (One fuzzy-edged picture in a book can look arty, but hundreds of them can get annoying).
Step 3: Trust your photographer’s vision, but provide a little direction Koch meets with clients again before their wedding and has them fill out a sheet with specific requests. He asks about family members so that he will know who they are and make sure they are covered. But he also asks that clients take this time to make special requests like getting a picture of a group of co-workers, high school friends, etc. “Give me everything you want so that I can tell you what I can and can’t do,” he says. In my situation, my husband and I should have said that we really wanted lots of candid pictures of our friends, and that we preferred people over landscape. I know that my photographer would have happily obliged. She did, in fact, ask us what we wanted, but we were too frazzled at the time – thanks to the remodel job and the lack of wedding planner – to think much about it. Oh well, at least we had that gorgeous setting. And I have plenty of pictures to prove it.

I love photographing weddings. It is a joyous time that people let me share in that special moment and I happen to be a lucky witness to it. My style is a mergence of traditional and photojournalism. I love capturing the little details and expressions of the events of the day. I love setting up the scene for my couples and then stepping back and watch what unfolds and taking an image at that precise moment. There is nothing more precious than two people sharing their love for one another than at their wedding.
I feel privileged when a couple lets me in on their day.

Marriage Licenses By Lindsay Gower
It’s the must-have accessory for every bride: A Marriage License! So let’s review the basics you need to know about getting licensed to wed.
GETTING THE LICENSE
Both bride and groom must go, in person together, to a County Clerk’s office. In California, you can go to the Clerk’s Office in any county; it does not need to be the county in which you are having the wedding. Neither of you needs to be a California resident to apply for a California marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is required and there is no waiting period: You apply, pay, and receive the license then and there.
YOU BOTH MUST:
• Be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger, you need consent of parent or guardian. • Bring a government- issued valid picture ID (such as a driver’s license) that includes your full legal name and date of birth. • If you have been married before, bring Proof of Dissolution. You cannot apply for a marriage license if you are married, even if your divorce is almost final.
WHAT TO DO WITH THE LICENSE You receive an unsigned license. Here’s what happens to make it an official wedding certificate: • The license is good anywhere in California, regardless of which county issued it. It’s valid for 90 days. If 90 days pass before a wedding ceremony, you must get a new license. • Before the wedding, give the license to the person who’ll officiate at the ceremony. The officiant is required to review the license before conducting the ceremony. It’s a good id a to bring it to the rehearsal for go over it with the officiant, and of course bring it to the wedding. • After the ceremony, the officiant will complete and sign the license, and have it signed by bride, groom and at least one witness. • The officiant will return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days of the ceremony, so it can be officially recorded. Once recorded, you can buy a copy of your wedding certificate (depending on the county, you don’t receive one automatically).
WHERE TO APPLY IN THE EAST BAY
In both Contra Costa and Alameda you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Their offices close at 4:30, so they request you arrive by 4:00 to have time to complete the paperwork.
Contra Costa County Clerk
Alameda County Clerk-Recorder
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.ccclerkrec.us/content.aspx?id=32
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.acgov.org/auditor/clerk/ml.htm
The fee is $85 for the license, payable by cash or debit card. You can get a copy of the marriage certificate, after it is recorded, for $17.
The fee is $80.00 for the license and a certificate of marriage and $16.00 for 1 certificate copy.

Think Local, Drink Local.
here’s no place like home, right? Here’s how to show off your T favorite local area with a wedding reception that features standout local wines, beers and spirits.
A Pretty Presentation Shine the spotlight on local ales by finding fun ways to make them an active part of your big Day’s events. Christopher Chan, director of wine & spirits at the Rainier Club suggests starting the reception with a “Wine Tasting Bar”. Select two of your local regions best white and red wines and pair them with trays of hors d’oeuvres. Syrah is a winner with lamb, for example, while sweetness of a dry Semillon is sublime with crab cakes. For suds-lovers, Chan recommends hosting a microbrew station. Fill tubs with ice and a variety of local brews. “Make sure to include a light and a dark beer option and cater to the preferences of the bride and groom” advises Casey Phinney, banquet coordinator at Pyramid Breweries in Berkeley and Walnut Creek. “With so many styles of Craft beer, it really provides the opportunity to add a personal touch to the wedding by letting guests try a local product and demonstrate the couple’s preferences and interests via what they select to serve,” says Phinney.
As for spirits, prepare a build-your-own bar that features a local vodka or gin along with a variety of mixers, such as fresh juices and specialty sodas, and ingredients like seasonal herbs and berries. “If you opt for station-style dinner service, another way to highlight one or all of these beverages is to pair each table with the wine, beer or cocktail that suits that particular cuisine best” says Jessica Pennington, owner and lead planner for Stella Event Design. At familyowned Crooked Vine Winery in Livermore, Calif. Courtney Garcia, Crooked Vine’s Event Manager suggests placing less importance on pairing wines than picking wines that are drinkable for the duration of the wedding. “I always encourage couples to pick wines that their guests would enjoy more than one glass of and that doesn’t necessarily have to be paired with a piece of meat or a meal. Weather can also be a consideration in places like Livermore, where average summer temperatures regularly reach the high 80”s. “If it’s hot outside, we usually pour a little more white than normal.” Crooked Vine Winery’s Sparkling Pinot Noir is a perfect example of a popular local pick for champagne toasts due to its beautiful pink color.
Smart Sourcing Your caterer will likely have advice about which regional beverages are the best match for the food being served, however if you are able to procure your own beer or wine and really want to go local, chat with the folks at a local winery or brewery. You can receive good advice like making sure to consider the ABV – or alcohol by volume – of the beers you choose. “Many people don’t realize how much alcohol can be found in a good craft beer, especially for those guests who don’t typically consume it” says Phinney. Plus many wineries and breweries will offer a 10-20 percent discount when you buy in bulk. If you really want to show off some higher-end bottles but also have a limited budget, the answer is portion control, says Chan. Feature that favorite spirit in a specialty cocktail and, when guests are seated, have waiters pour small glasses of wine and beer as a special treat to kick off dinner. Or go with Pennington’s “sweet tip” stick with cheaper products in the bar, but offer a really splendid local dessert wine with the cake for a fabulous flavor combination that guests won’t soon forget!

The decision to include or disclude someone from your ceremony gets even trickier when it’s a close family member By Mary Fons Seeing as how I know very little about how weddings work (I’ve only been to four in my whole life), I know nothing about big, vaguely political guest lists. Luckily, my maid of honor is my fiancé’s sister; she’s going to help with his side of the family, which is the side with the most of the numbers. But that doesn’t mean I’m off the hook. In fact, my guest-list work seriously is cut out for me. The main problem? I’ve got – how shall I put it – a “problem” guest. I won’t say which family member it is, but trust me when I say that it’s a major player. Not inviting this person would be pretty bad; then again, inviting this person might be worse. What’s a bride to do? Linda Kevich of Winnipeg, Canada, has been in the wedding consultation business for 17 years and currently serves as Director of The International Institute of Weddings. Kevich says that when it comes to trouble guests, it’s all on a case-by-case basis. “How you handle a problem guest is related to the specifics of the particular situation,” says Kevich. “In general, however, the best advice I have for every bride is unless its something that has the potential to be truly catastrophic, just relax and make the decision not to give anyone the power to affect your wedding day with their own negative energy.”
OK, I can live with that. As Kevich reminds me, “You really don’t have any control over what someone else is going to do, but you do have control over your own reaction.” Very Zen. I like it. Though my mind might be at ease about that aspect of the guest-list puzzle, there’s still all the other stuff: Do I invite my old college chum even though we haven’t spoken in years? What about every member of the theatre company I work with? “It was stressful to decide who we would cut from the list,” says bride Darci Lynn of Chicago. “Ultimately we defined parameters for who we would invite and that took the guilt out of cutting people.” Lynn says that a well-known rule helped rule-out a lot of people, too. “I read somewhere that if you haven’t had dinner with the person in over a year, you aren’t obligated to invite them. Obviously this doesn’t apply to out-of-town guests, but it eliminated the need to invite friends of friends.” But, as Kevich points out, wedding “rules” are never set in stone. “It’s got to be what you are comfortable with, what’s going to make you happy, and what you can comfortably afford,” she says. “Your wedding day should be a reflection of who you are, right down to the size of the guest list. If you’re in your element when surrounded by 500 of your closest friends, then it’s not too many. If a small, intimate affair of only your closest family and friends is more in keeping with what you’re comfortable with, then it’s not too few.” Looking at it this way, it seems doable. I just need to sit down with my fiancé, my maid of honor, my mom, my address book, my checkbook, my Christmas card list, my photo album, my planner and my therapist’s phone number, just in case. Piece of cake.
