Nordisk Panorama 2018 Welcome to the 29th edition of Nordisk Panorama! You are about to enter a film festival that matters. In times when “fake news” is as familiar a phrase as “Do you want coffee?”, when we see an increase in violence and threats against artists and cultural presenters, when there are growing political parties wanting to restrict grants to the independent cultural sector, it is sensible to feel a little concerned about the state of the cultural and democratic climate in the Nordic countries today. Are we taking the concept of democracy for granted in the Nordic countries? So much so that we don’t even realise that the most profound foundations of our society are being challenged? Over six days, Nordisk Panorama brings together some amazing events, Through films, seminars, talks, pitches, meetings and parties; we meet, share, debate, take part, get inspired, connect, involve and feel. Nordisk Panorama presents the best Nordic documentaries and short films and enables the continuous process of filmmaking. Through the captivating curiosity and persistence of extraordinary Nordic filmmakers, our eyes are opened to a reality beyond our own everyday lives. By presenting many different points of view, the fantastic complexities of life are revealed. Together we make a difference. We cannot wait to meet you! Nordisk Panorama Film i Skåne Malmö Stad

COMPETITION BEST NORDIC SHORT 2018

Tilted Axis This selection of shorts is told with something of a shifted and skewed perspective, exploring alternative realities with a twisted lens. The dinner party in Jerry Carlsson’s Shadow Animals goes from slightly strange to all-out bizarre when the guests partake in the most peculiar after-dinner rituals, while Réka Bucsi’s animated cosmic odyssey Solar Walk melts the mind whilst exploring space, and Kerren Lumer-Klabbers’ A Stone Slowly Falls takes an unconventional look at depression. Perfect for those who lean towards the offbeat. Screened 23 Sep & 24 Sep

SHADOW ANIMALS

SOLAR WALK

Jerry Carlsson / 2017 / Sweden / 22 min

Réka Bucsi / 2018 / Denmark / 21 min

A young girl, Marall, goes to a party with her two dads. As the evening progresses she finds the adults’ behaviour increasingly strange. Everyone at the party is trying to conform but not everyone suc ceeds. A study of adult behaviour through a child’s perspective, and the relationship between acting and dancing.

This short is about the melancholy of accepting chaos as beautiful and cosmic. A passion for creation is projected through the unique and playful texture of the anima tion craft itself.

From The film Shadow Animals.

THE GREEN VALLEY

A STONE SLOWLY FALLS

Ellen H. Ugelstad / 2018 / Norway / 24 min

Kerren Lumer-Klabbers / 2018 / Norway / 15 min

A political film based on three real events that took place in 2014 in Oslo. It explores the connection between a man setting himself on fire in the local park, a sculpture, and the end of the summer home work programme for local kids. A mix of live action, archive mate rial and re-enactment.

When an annual meteor shower doesn’t occur for no apparent rea son, Tor concludes that everything is meaningless. But as he tries to live by this newfound knowledge, his curiosity becomes a problem. An unconventional view of depres sion and an insight into a young man’s mind through a quirky nar rative.

COMPETITION BEST NORDIC SHORT 2018

Rebels With a Cause Strong characters with bold and unflinchingly brazen attitudes take centre stage in this programme. Featuring Mika Gustafson’s Mephobia, which blurs the lines between fiction and nonfiction with her hard-hitting short following a group of young women causing havoc in a Swedish neighbourhood, while Brúsi Ólason’s Viktoría dramatises a farmer’s battle to keep her dairy farm afloat after her only employee leaves her stranded, and the brilliant experimental dance film Juck, pushes boundaries in female representation. Filmmaking that packs a punch – unapologetically so. Screened 22 Sep & 24 Sep

COMPETITION BEST NORDIC SHORT 2018

Funny Games The lighter side of life is explored in this humorous programme, but be warned – there are also some darker undertones lurking in one or two of these shorts. The Sporadic Film Collective’s mantra of ‘one idea, one meeting, one day of shooting’ works wonders once again as their brilliantly funny short about how not to propose to someone testifies; We Retired People is a masterclass in comic writing and timing, and the innovative, award-winning As We’re Told takes the seemingly mundane topic of bureaucracy within a job centre and turns it on its head – it’s a joy to behold.

THE TIGER Mikko Myllylahti / 2018 / Finland / 11 min It’s a winter evening. Dad returns home drunk. Tiger is in his room and mom is sleeping on the couch. A quarrel breaks out. Tiger and mom escape the house. Silence falls. Tiger needs to go back inside to see what has happened – and to take the first steps towards inde pendence.

Screened 21 Sep & 23 Sep

THE DOOR

THE PROPOSAL

Jenni Toivoniemi / 2017 / Finland / 9 min

Det sporadiske filmkollektivet / 2017 / Norway / 6 min

Strange sounds in the apartment building hallway wake Jussi in the middle of the night. Fear and the need to protect his family force him to investigate. He finds a homeless alcoholic, Pentti, who has just bro ken the window of the hallway door.

On a boat in an idyllic setting, Joa chim goes down on one knee to propose to Toril, the love of his life. Toril has other thoughts about their relationship.

WE RETIRED PEOPLE

AFFECT

Tia Kouvo / 2018 / Sweden / 12 min

Arvin Kananian / 2017 / Sweden / 11 min

It’s an ordinary Tuesday morning in February in Sweden. It’s cold. An elderly couple, Elma and Sven, pass the time reading advertising flyers and waiting for the phar macy to open. A stationary road movie about old age.

At a summer house, a couple is preparing lunch. The man wan ders into the forest to pee. And to masturbate. His phone signals a text message and his girlfriend picks up the phone. She knows he has an allergy to peanuts, but not the severity of his reaction. A dra ma with a hint of dark comedy.

AS WE’RE TOLD

SANCTUARY

Erik Holmström & Fredrik Wenzel / 2017 / Sweden / 30 min

Magnus Rutberg / 2018 / Sweden, Finland / 8 min

“It’s simple. We do as we’re told.” This unsettling reply comes from a Swedish employment office emplo yee when asked how the country’s most unpopular government agen cy works. A comical study of strate gies for survival in an irrational bureaucracy.

Cogito ergo sum. Well, that’s easy for you to say, Descartes. Try to stop the constant radio that’s going on inside your head instead.

 COMPETITION BEST NORDIC SHORT 2018

Nearest and Dearest Capturing bona-fide intimacy, emotion and tenderness is no easy feat, but these shorts all succeed where many a filmmaker has tried and failed. The docu mentaries Haunted and 27 First Years both see the filmmakers turn the camera onto family members, with a portrait of a mother whose story is complex and moving, and the relationship between a parent and severely disabled son which is life-affirming in every sense. And Apple tells the poetic tale of life in limbo, the pendulum swinging between happiness and pain. Expressive filmmaking that touches the heart. Screened 22 Sep & 25 Sep

HAUNTED

WEIGHT OF SPRING

Christian Einshøj / 2018 / Denmark / 30 min

Erika Calmeyer / 2017 / Norway / 7 min

The ageing mother of the film maker sees a ghost outside her son’s childhood bedroom. But what is behind this visit from beyond? The dryly comic narra tion is combined with stylised tab leaux and grainy home-video in this real-life ghost story from Nor wegian suburbia.

The stories tell twelve different and each story consists of a single, carefully composed picture show ing a situation involving a couple. The film looks for the complex and grey areas in relationships and the effect of age, ethnicity and status. We all share a vulnerability and a desire to be loved.

APPLE

27 FIRST YEARS

Yngvild Sve Flikke / 2018 / Norway / 20 min

Jussi Sandhu / 2018 / Finland / 29 min

A young woman invites her litera ture teacher to discuss a story he has written. She suggests that he is writing to disguise his own inner desires. They fall in love. A poetic story of life in limbo between hap piness and pain.

How does a mother react when her disabled son leaves home at the age of 27? How does her role change when she moves an adult child into assisted living? A mot her is alone for the first time as she transitions into old age. A doc umentary by Jussi Sandhu about his mother and his brother.

Kristian Håskjold / 2018 / Denmark / 20 min

Nader is used to take punches and doesn’t let it stop him from look ing for love but he doesn’t realise he is throwing punches too. The film was produced while the idea is still fresh – One idea. One meet ing. One day of filming.

SINKING OF THE TRUTH

OSLO TALES

Tobias Gundorff Boesen / 2018 / Denmark / 8 min

André Chocron / 2017 / Norway / 10 min

A remake of The Sinking Of The Lusitania, world’s first animated documentary, used as propagan da to push US into WWI. But mak ing a film true to the occured events proves difficult in our world of fake news and a never- ending flow of misinformation.

Stories and observations about people in Oslo, told by the city’s most visual but least talkative in habitants: Houses. Sound record ings of people combined with ani mated clips of different residen tials – they tell stories themselves.

TEU VOL.1

TINGLES

Lasse Næraa Smith / 2018 / Denmark / 8 min

Jani Kauta / 2017 / Finland / 7 min

The first part in a trilogy is about mankind under containers and globalisation. The logistics of con tainer transport are complex and it could almost be its own organ ism. Its purpose is proportional to men’s fascination for growth and consumption.

A phenomenon no-one can ex plain: a peculiar tingling sensa tion in the brain, yet undiagnosed by medical science. An Internet community was developed, and Tingles seeks to describe the inde scribable and help people under stand the sensation.

Limited seating, ticket required.

HOW WE DIT IT Fri 21 Sep | Sat 22 Sep | Sun 23 Sep | Mon 24 Sep “How We Did It” presents interesting discussions with artists and filmmak ers in an informal bar setting. Come along to Cinema Spegelns Foyer, have a drink and be inspired! Free entrance and open to all.

HOW WE DID IT: To create diversified stories Fri 21 Sep | 17:00 –18:00 | Spegeln | Free In Between contra Conventional Film Industry. How do we get new stories with characters that you’ve never seen before? How do we create challeng ing and diversified stories no matter what? WIFT has invited Lena Hansson Varhegyi former film commissioner, Sofie Palage producer for Trädgårdsga tan and Lisa Fjellman & Anna Lönn Franko with their coming feature film, Mellanrumsfruar/In Between: a surreal black comedy.

HOW WE DID IT: VR and prototyping Sat 22 Sep | 15:00 –16:00 | Spegeln | Free How does combining different formats enrich the stories we tell? Join us for a talk with VR creators from the field of performing arts and docu mentary filmmaking. Stefan Stanisic from Bombina Bombast and Ove Rishøj Jensen from Auto Images present their VR prototypes Kinemato grafi and The Moment of Freedom Experience. Stefan and Ove will dis cuss the choices made when prototyping, their experience with story telling in multiple formats, and tell those who would like to venture into VR where to start. Both works will be showcased at Spegeln on 22–23 September.

HOW WE DID IT: Distinct Voices Sun 23 Sep | 17:00 –18:00 | Spegeln | Free This year’s programme is full of inventive, distinct, and bold filmmaking, and for this session we invite some of the filmmakers in competition to share their thoughts on innovative approaches and styles, and to muse on what makes a film stand out. Jerry Carlsson, director of the Shadow Ani mals, and Olivia Kastebring, co-director of Juck will be joined by a third filmmaker for the discussion.

HOW WE DID IT: Blurring fact and fiction Mon 24 Sep | 17:00 –18:00 | Spegeln | Free The docudrama is as old as film itself, but in recent years there’s been something of a movement when it comes to playing with the form of the documentary. This discussion will explore the moveable boundar ies of depicting real life on film and the blurred lines between fact and fiction. Filmmakers on the panel will be Mika Gustafson (Mephobia), Yenni Lee (Water Bears), and Nicole Nielsen Horanyi (The Stranger).
