BUYING TICKETS There are three levels of festival participation: Single ticket, Festival Pass and Accreditation. The “NP Awards Gala” (p. 37) and “Our Dinner With” (p. 40) events requires pre-registration and additional payment. Free entries are stated in the programme. SINGLE TICKETS Single tickets (60 SEK) can be bought at Kulturcentralen, Södra Förstadsgatan 18, or at www.kulturcentralen.nu During the festival, tickets can also be bought at the NP Ticket Offices at Panora and Spegeln. A membership card is mandatory for all festival visitors. Collect/buy your card at the NP Tickets Offices or at Kulturcentralen. The membership card costs a one time fee of SEK 10. FESTIVAL PASS A Festival Pass gives access to all open festival screening and events. With your Festival Pass you can show up to a screening or sessions and get access to available seats. To guarantee your seat to a specific screening or event, collect a free ticket from the NP Ticket Offices from Sept 17. Please collect your ticket 20 minutes before screening or event. A festival pass (including membership) is SEK 250. For Accreditation, please visit our web site. Accreditation is for film professionals

NP TICKET OFFICES The NP Ticket Offices at Panora and Spegeln open 30 minutes before the first festival screening begins and close 30 minutes after the last screening begins. On behalf of Nordisk Panorama, the City of Malmö and Film i Skåne we welcome you to a festival designed for entertainment, inspiration, learning, networking and business with lots of fun and thought-provoking moments on the way. A very special welcome to the people living in Malmö, and Southern Sweden; as we have put the festival programme together, we have thought a lot about you and about meeting your interest as it has grown over the past three years. We are aiming to occupy an even bigger place in your hearts and thoughts after this year’s festival. An equally special welcome to all film professionals from near and far. This festival builds on your work and also aims to serve the films you will create in the future. It is a great honour and pleasure to facilitate your talent and professional ambitions. NORDIC MISSION

Nordisk Panorama has a Nordic mission in a time when everything is global. Over the years the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s key missions has been to assist Nordic filmmakers in internationalisation. A majority of the films showing at Nordisk Panorama Film Festival in 2016 have been created through an international patchwork of partners, funders, distributors and broadcasters. And they are targeting an international audience. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s display of great international Nordic films will take us on a journey into nuanced storytelling exploring human relationships as well as the political and sociological realities of the world we live in. Our Nordic mission is to promote these great films internationally and assist them to achieve the best possible conditions for unfolding their creativity and business potential. The festival is the culmination of a year-round effort to promote the works of Nordic filmmakers in the documentary and short fiction genres. Nordisk Panorama Film Festival is a unique meeting place, where the Nordic film industry touches base with an impressive line-up of

international decision-makers as well a fast growing public audience. All the Nordic countries have strong film communities with solid values and a passion for exploring the unknown or the problematic. We have a long lasting tradition for democracy and freedom of expression. But these are not values or privileges, which stand undisputed in the Nordic countries, merely something of great concern to most people in the region. Nordisk Panorama Film Festival thus thrives to be a meeting place where creative and openminded people share stories, collaborate in partnerships, create value and have fun in the spirit of such fundamental positive Nordic values.

NORDISK PANORAMA Awards

NP Awards At Nordisk Panorama selected films compete in three sections: Nordic Documentary, Nordic Short Film and New Nordic Voices. Constituting a true Nordic championship, the films in competition are selected from all five Nordic countries, representing the very best short films and documentaries recently produced in the region. The 50 titles in our three competition programmes for 2016 were chosen from 616 submitted films eligible for selection.

In addition to our three competion sections we also presents the NP Audience Award. The audience can vote for any of the NP Audience Award Nordic short films and documentaries competing in the main competition programmes, and the new Nordic films in the special programmes, by using the voting cards handed out after the screenings. The NP Audience Award prize sum is €2,500€ and is sponsored by the City of Malmö.

To put together a competition programme is a challenge. In addition to the 50 competition titles we have selected another 50 for our special programme. The quality and diversity of films produced in the Nordic countries is high. There’s passion and courage, love and rage – and really good stories. We are really happy that the audience in Malmö and our distinguished international guests will have the opportunity to dive into this rich programme. Through our master classes, seminars and special events we aim to give you depth and inspiration but also to celebrate artistic innovation, digital disruption and – more importantly than ever – freedom of speech. This year we have put together a special audience-in-focus programme playing around the city, including Pool cinema, Knit-along cinema and Midnight cinema to mention just a few. It is a delight and a privilege to screen all of the Nordic short films submitted to Nordisk Panorama. Making the selections, however, is the agony that goes along with that ecstasy, and whittling down the competition and special programme titles was painful. The short films being produced in the five Nordic countries set the standard for rest of the world and have easily provided the most stimulating challenge of my programming career. I am drowning in excellence and spoiled by choice. In this Olympic year, I hope you will be game to jump in the pool for some wet and weightless watching as we present water-themed shorts, and have the endurance to see an entire day of shorts on Saturday at Spegeln, as Nordic shorts unspool from breakfast until bedtime! Finally, this is the perfect year to focus on Norway, whose shorts and docs are on fire! Risk-taking, original and timely, Norwegian filmmakers are telling stories that the world needs now! 7

Nordisk Panorama Film Festival wants you to explore the uniqueness of each of the countries within the Nordic family. So every year we put our ears to the ground of one of the Nordic countries to explore what is happening in this particular country in this particular year. OUR DINNER WITH – Aslaug Holm and Åsa Linderborg Boat dinner with storytellers ”Our Dinner With…” is a mainstay at Nordisk Panorama, every year presenting exiting encounters between Nordic and international storytellers. Come join us for a fantastic Sunday dinner on the floating restaurant Blå Båten while listening to a conversation between two Nordic storytellers, Aslaug Holm and Åsa Linderborg. The dinner concept will be organized by the event company Till Bords, providing unexpected, tasteful and fun dinner settings. SHOWING THE OTHER SIDE Masterclass with Paul S. Refsdal

Refsdal is a journalist turned into a documentary filmmaker. After leaving the Norwegian army in 1984, he went to Afghanistan to report on the Mujahedin fighting Soviet occupation. In the following decades Refsdal reported on more than a dozen insurgent groups including the KLA in Kosovo, the Tamil Tigers, the Shining Path of Peru, the Chechen rebels, the Afghan Taliban and the Syrian branch of Al-Qaida.

Paul S. Refsdal will talk about the intended message of his films and the concept of showing the human side of our designated enemies. He will describe the numerous hurdles and dilemmas which had to be overcome in making his second documentary, “Dugma – the Button”, including dealing with broadcasters anxious about airing the film. Documentary filmmakers are often drawn to faraway places, stories and subjects foreign to their everyday lives. What are the impulses and influences that lead them far from home and the challenges of making films abroad? How do they avoid the tourist trap of looking outside in, and for a limited time only? This isn’t just a question of access and personal investment, but also one of morality; how does a filmmaker go from being an outsider to an insider, from passive listener to active participant, and determine right from wrong in an environment outside of their time zone and comfort zone?

The oft-cited line “dying is easy, comedy is hard” gets an update in this discussion of darkness and genre filmmaking. Comedy is hard, but scary is even harder! Are scares more difficult to deliver than laughs? Is inciting fear and tension more elusive than creating something funny? Why do horror and macabre genres “get no respect”? Disturbing, morbid and unsettling feelings are sensations that audiences may try to avoid, but aren’t they just as important and inspiring as happy endings and feelgood takeaway? Spooky filmmakers tell their side of the story.

What is it like to direct your Dad, to produce your parents, to make a movie about your Mom? Filmmakers who share their family’s intimate moments and memories with the masses face specific problems and pleasures in working with their nearest and dearest.
