SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS, SUPPLY LISTS, TEXTBOOKS

Students are required to complete summer assignments for their upcoming year. Links for the assignments, as well as the required textbooks (if applicable) and how to order them, and supply lists by grade are available on the Back to School resource board.

Parents and students are able to access the resource board by logging into MyCollegiate at NorfolkCollegiate.org and then toggling to the “Resources” tab. PARENT RESOURCES

EXTENDED CARE SERVICES

Norfolk Collegiate offers before and after school extended care services for our lower and middle school students. Below is a breakdown of the options available.

LOWER SCHOOL EXTENDED CARE

Extended Care is available from 7:30–8 a.m. and 3–6 p.m. every day school is in session starting after Labor Day. Extended care will not be available on teacher work days, parent-teacher conference days, early dismissals, holidays, faculty in-service days and days that school is closed.

Cost: $56 yearly registration fee per student, daily reserved fee is $29 per student; $35 drop-in fee per student. You’re only charged for days your student attends the Extended Care Program. A fee of $25 will incur every 15 minutes, or any part thereof, past 6 pm. The cost is for K-5 only, pre-Kindergarten is included in tuition.

1. Every lower school family must complete the extended care registration form before the start of the school year, even if their student will not be attending extended care.

2. NEW CHANGES THIS YEAR: We are no longer accepting daily drop-ins in our program. Students must sign up prior to attending the program. We understand sometimes families need to use the program unexpectedly or on occasion, please email lower.extendedcare@norfolkcollegiate.org to request a drop-in. The drop-in fee is $35.

3. All Kindergarten through Grade 5 students must complete the placement form indicating the days of the week they will be attending the program. The billing cycle following the first day your student attends the program, a $56 registration fee per student will be billed to your account.

4. All pre-K students must complete the placement form indicating if they plan to use the program and what days they plan on attending.

The extended care registration form is available on the Extended Care Resource Board at NorfolkCollegiate. org. Families should communicate changes in pick-up and request a drop-in day via lower.extended care@ norfolkcollegiate.org. Contact the lower school at 757.625.0471 with questions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXTENDED CARE

Grades pre-K-12 utilize this web-based program to post grades and assignments and facilitate communication between teachers, students and families. SOCIAL MEDIA

PARENT AMBASSADORS

Parent Ambassadors, PAs, are current parents who serve as liaisons and resources for a specific grade. Each grade has ambassadors who will communicate upcoming events, class activities, teacher appreciation events and more throughout the year. Be on the lookout for emails from your parent ambassadors throughout the year.

STUDENT DIRECTORY

The Student Directory provides contact information for current students. This directory is available on MyCollegiate under “Directories” tab (you must be logged on to view the directory).

SCHOOL CLOSURES

If the school should need to close due to inclement weather or for an unforeseen emergency, the school will communicate with families via phone, email and text, on our website and through social media. In the event of inclement weather closures, notices also will be posted on the scrolls of local news stations. Ensure your contact information is correct by logging into MyCollegiate and reviewing and updating, if needed, your contact information.

ALL PARENTS

Upload and complete the requirements for each student in Magnus Health before the first day of school, Aug. 24.

UPPER SCHOOL PARENTS

Purchase books (listed on Norfolk Collegiate’s website).

Label student’s name in books, calculators and clothing.

Details | This is for ALL freshmen (new & returning) and ALL new students in Grades 9-12 to Norfolk Collegiate. This will be held in the Hackney Theater in the Meredith Center for the Arts. Students are NOT required to be in school dress. Students are invited to set up lockers with their parents at 9:15 a.m. Students returning to Collegiate will be released at 12 p.m. All new students to Collegiate will end the day at 12:30 p.m. after completing email, Internet and device setup.

Details | This is a wonderful opportunity for our NEW students and their parents to become more acquainted with Collegiate. Please join us for this informative time together and don’t forget to bring your school supplies.

Pre-K4 and Kindergarten students will go directly to their classrooms and students in Grades 1 through 5 will go to the Spainhour Family Library. All family members will then join administrators in the auditorium.

OPEN HOUSE FOR RETURNING STUDENTS | 10 A.M.-NOON

Details | All returning students and parents are requested to join us at our Open House. This is a great time for your students to settle into their new learning environments and unpack supplies.

Details | All pre-K3 students and their parents are invited to our orientation. We hope you join us and get to know your classmates at the lower school and take this opportunity to drop off supplies.

If you’re unsure where you are supposed to be on orientation day, check out the handy flow chart below, and of course, feel free to reach out to your student’s division if you have additional questions.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

The school calendar is an excellent resource for activities and opportunities to get involved with the community. The printed calendar is being mailed to our families and is mirrored by an electronic version at NorfolkCollegiate.org/Calendar, which has additional details including specific times, locations and contact information. It’s updated throughout the year and is also available as an iCalendar online.

Throughout the year Collegiate hosts many important events to bring our community together. Below are a few of the events that you will not want to miss. On the following page are early dismissals, school closures and observed holidays. These dates are also listed on the school’s website and in the printed calendar.

PARENTS’ NIGHT | AUG. 31 & SEPT. 7, 2023

This is an opportunity for our parents to hear about school-wide enhancements and have the opportunity to visit their student’s classroom and speak with teachers.

• Lower school Parents’ Night is Thursday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m.

• Middle and upper school Parents’ Night is Thursday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

FALL FAIR & HOMECOMING | OCT. 13 & 14, 2023

This weekend is full of school spirit, celebrating alumni, current families and faculty and staff. The festivities kick-off with a pep rally Friday the week before, followed by a week of spirit-themed school dress, Oyster Roast sponsored by TASTE the following Friday evening and it all culminates with Fall Fair and alumni reunions the following day.

The Tidewater Drive entrance is only open from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. At all other times, please use the Willow Wood Drive entrance.

MORNING CARE (7:30-7:55 A.M.)

Students who arrive before 7:55 a.m. will be directed to Morning Extended Care in the cafeteria. Students are to enter through the far door along the side of the school adjacent to Tidewater Drive and the fields.

1. When entering the parking lot from Tidewater Drive: Please take a right at the stop sign and follow the arrows to take a U-turn to then become parallel to the sidewalk by the side entrance (illustrated with yellow arrows above).

2. When entering the parking lot from Willow Wood Drive: Please follow the driveway towards the fields, make a U-turn, and pull over by the sidewalk by the entrance.

3. Please remain in your car until the a faculty or staff member opens the door and directs your student to the door and to the cafeteria.

SCHOOL ARRIVAL (7:55-8:15 A.M.)

Beginning at 7:55 a.m., cars will be directed to join the carpool arrival line. Please enter the lower school campus from the Tidewater Drive entrance or the Willow Wood Drive entrance and proceed to the front of the lower school.

1. Pull your car forward to the front of the drop–off area (adjacent to playground) and keep moving forward as cars leave. There are times when a faculty member or guard will ask you to move your car forward before allowing your student to leave your car.

2. Beginning at 8 a.m., a faculty or staff member will open the students’ car door and assist them to the school door. As the year progresses, a student Safety Patrol member will assist in this process.

3. Please have your students exit through the passenger side so that they may enter the building quickly and safely. This way your students will be arriving and exiting the sidewalk rather than in approaching traffic. Also, please, have your student’s book bags with them in the car rather than in the trunk.

• Pre-K through Grade 2 students will enter through the second entrance, closest towards the playground. Pre-K students will be escorted to their classroom by an adult or fifth grade safety patrol volunteer.

• Grade 3-5 students will enter the building through the front entrance of the building.

4. Once you’ve dropped off your passenger, you may exit from the Tidewater Drive or the Willow Wood Drive exit.

AFTERNOON DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Any student leaving school before 3 p.m. dismissal must submit a parental note to the school office or provide verbal parental permission or send an email to Debra Kraus in the front office at 757.625.0471 or dkraus@norfolkcollegiate.org

Please notify the office by 2 p.m. for any dismissal changes pertaining to your student.

SCHOOL DISMISSAL (3-3:15 P.M.)

1. Any parents wanting to personally walk up to pick up their students may park in the side parking lot (adjacent to Tidewater Drive) and stand in the designated parent pick-up area along the sidewalk. A faculty member will send your student to that area (illustrated on map as ). Parents may also park in the parking lot at Lakewood Park and walk through the back gate by the playground. Please wait in the covered picnic area. A faculty member will send your student to that area. Please remember to bring your dismissal placard to expedite the process and to ensure a safe dismissal process.

2. Students departing from school in cars will be dismissed at 3 p.m. in the curb area of the front entrance to the school building (adjacent to Willow Wood drive entrance).

3. Name placards will need to be visibly displayed in the passenger side window as we will be calling all students individually to the car dismissal area as cars arrive.

• Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 will be dismissed individually as the car approaches the second entrance (adjacent to the playground).

• Grades 3-5 will stand in the front entrance area.

4. Lower school students will stay with a teacher until dismissed to a parent. For safety reasons, no lower school student will be allowed to leave the curb side until the teacher dismisses them.

5. Pull your car forward to the front of the drop–off area (adjacent to playground) and keep moving forward as cars leave. There are times when a faculty member or guard will ask you to move your car forward before allowing your student to enter your car.

6. Please note that teachers and staff are not permitted to assist your student with car seats or seat belts at dismissal. If your student needs assistance with their seat belt, please pull all the way forward or into a parking space to assist. To maintain a safe traffic flow, please do NOT exit your car unless you are pulled into a parking space.

ENRICHMENT (TIMES MAY VARY)

Lower school will be offering various enrichments both before and after school, including band, strings and various clubs, which will be communicated at a later date.

1. After school enrichments dismiss from the front entrance.

2. Parents need to show their carpool placard to the security guard or staff member on duty.

3. Pull forward to the front of the carpool area (adjacent to playground) and remain in your car until your student is escorted out.

4. Students not picked up within 5 minutes of the completion of an enrichment program will be escorted to Extended Care where they will be supervised until parents arrive. The daily extended care fee will be applied to your student account for this date.

EXTENDED CARE (3-6 P.M.)

Lower school students not picked up by 3:15 p.m. will be escorted to Extended Care where they will be supervised until parents arrive. Afternoon care students will be supervised in grade level groups and are assigned to classrooms. Students MUST be picked up by an authorized adult.

1. The Extended Care Program closes at 6 p.m. A late charge of $25 for every 15 minutes (or any part thereof) will be applied if a student is not picked up by 6 p.m.

2. Upon arrival for pick-up, parents need to show your carpool placard to the security guard or staff member on duty.

3. Pull forward to the front of the carpool area (adjacent to playground) and remain in your car until your student is escorted out to the vehicle.

SUBURBAN PARKWAY

For your student’s safety, Norfolk Collegiate has blocked off certain sections of the parking lot to allow for safer drop-off and pick-up procedures. Parents should enter Suburban Parkway from Granby Street and proceed toward the middle school entrance.

ARRIVAL:

1. All middle school students should enter through the main middle school doors.

2. Students who arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. must go directly to the Extended/Before Care room.

3. Students arriving after 8 a.m. must go directly to their advisory for that day.

4. The strings instructor will be in touch regarding procedures for entering the building for the morning strings class. Morning strings will begin after Labor Day.

DISMISSAL:

1. Students will be dismissed to the following locations:

• Carpool

• Athletics or Other Extracurricular Activities

• Extended Care

2. Dismissal begins at 3:10 p.m. All students leaving at 3:10 p.m. will go directly outside to the carpool line.

3. Students remaining at school after 3:30 p.m. will go directly to the Extended Care room unless they are working with a teacher, club or in athletics.

4. Students working with a teacher or with a club will report directly to that teacher. Students participating in athletics will go directly to practice or Extended Care room before practice or after practice while waiting for pick-up.

5. All students, with the exception of those in practices, performances or contests, must be picked up no later than 6 p.m. A fee of $25 will incur every 15 minutes, or any part thereof, past 6 pm.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES 7:30-8 A.M.

1. The main lobby entrance will be unlocked at 7:30 a.m.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES FOR MORNING BAND, CHORUS AND STRINGS

1. Band and Chorus will begin meeting after Labor Day.

2. Band students will meet in the Band Room and will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance between 7:20-7:25 a.m. Students will be greeted by upper school faculty/staff members.

3. Chorus students will meet in the chorus room in the Meredith Center for the Arts. They will enter the Meredith Center through the doors located by the chorus room between 7:20-7:25 a.m. That door is most easily accessed by entering the parking lot off of Granby Park Drive. Students will be greeted by upper school faculty/staff members.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES BETWEEN 8-8:20 A.M.

1. Seniors will park in the lots located closest to the Watt-Baker Gymnasium and will access them through the third parking lot entrance on Granby Street; however, they are not to park in the spaces in front of the Meredith Center for the Arts. Overflow parking for seniors and other student drivers is available on both sides of Suburban Parkway and the lot next to the Mathas Family Field. We ask that students do not block the school buses when using overflow parking. They will enter through the upper school lobby doors (illustrated on the map as ).

2. Juniors may park along Suburban Parkway and the parking lot in front of the Mathas Family Field. Please note that parking by the Franklin Family Field is reserved for middle school faculty and staff only. Juniors will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance (illustrated on the map as ).

3. Sophomores and freshmen will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance (illustrated on the map as ).

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES AFTER 8:20 A.M.

1. Any student arriving on campus after 8:20 a.m. will enter through the main lobby entrance where they will sign in.

2. Any student arriving after 8:20 a.m. to class or to campus will be marked tardy.

DISMISSAL:

Dismissal begins at 3:10 p.m.

1. Students are permitted to leave campus after dismissal and to return for pick-up, athletic practices or contests, play/musical practices, extra help, club meetings, etc.

2. Unless students are working with a teacher or coach, all students in Grades 9-11 on campus after 3:10 p.m. are required to report to the Stanton Library until their rides arrive.

LUNCH, PE & RECESS

LUNCHES & SNACKS

FLIK Dining will provide daily food service to all students, faculty and staff for free. Chef Barry Smith serves as Norfolk Collegiate’s chef manager for FLIK. He’s classically trained in the culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University and brings extensive experience managing food service for Virginia Beach Public Schools as well as several area restaurants.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & RECESS UPPER SCHOOL

Grades 9 and 10 will have two quarters of physical education. Students in Grade 10 may opt-out of this graduation requirement if they are playing an in-season Norfolk Collegiate sport. In these cases, with the exception of those enrolled in Family Life for freshmen, student-athletes will have a study hall during their assigned PE bell.

• Uniforms should be worn in all PE classes. Blue, black or gray Norfolk Collegiate shorts can be purchased in the Collegiate Corner and may be worn with any Norfolk Collegiate T-shirt, which may also be purchased in the Collegiate Corner.

• Students will change for PE in locker rooms.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grades 6-8 participate in physical education.

LOWER SCHOOL

Students have physical education and recess daily. These activities will be held outside, weather permitting. Our playground areas will remain open to students, but grades will continue to access these areas at separate times throughout the day in order to allow students more space to run and play. The use of hand sanitizer and/or handwashing will be enforced both before and after recess and PE.

DON’T FORGET YOUR WATER BOTTLES, OAKS

We have several water bottle filling stations throughout the school, so don’t forget to pack your reusable water bottle each day.

ADMINISTRATION

Leslie Gulak, Director of Learning Services

Leslie Gulak joins us as our new director of learning services where she will oversee the learning resource program at Collegiate. She is excited to begin her work supporting a variety of student learning styles and working with our faculty serving students with learning differences.

She holds an education specialist degree in administration and supervision from Old Dominion University, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in special education from Radford University. Her experience as a special education administrator spans both elementary and high school in Virginia Beach Public Schools as a department chair, compliance support team member, and staff representative to the Virginia Beach School Board. We’re excited to have her join our amazing team and excourage you to stop by and welcome her to Collegiate!

LOWER SCHOOL

Annie Bashara ’15, Physical Education Teaching Assistant/Coach

Annie Bashara ’15 knows a thing or two about blue and white, after all, she’s a member of the Class of 2015. Now, she will join the faculty as the new lower school physical education teaching assistant alongside Coach Osby. After school, you will see her on the field coaching varsity and middle school field hockey. After graduating from Collegiate, she attended Bridgewater College where she played for the women’s lacrosse team while taking courses in athletic coaching, conditioning and weight training and nutritional concepts. She returned to her roots and became an assistant coach for Collegiate’s women’s lacrosse team before taking her talents to Virginia Wesleyan University’s women’s lacrosse team. She went on to become the assistant coach of the La Jolla Country Day School’s girls’ lacrosse team before returning home to lend her talents to Cape Henry Collegiate’s girls’ field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse as assistant coaches. She’s so excited to be back at Collegiate where she can be mentoring the newest classes of Oaks, so pop into the lower school and welcome her back.

Susan Horvath, Pre-K3 Teaching Assistant

Susan Horvath joins us as the new pre-K3 teaching assistant. She most recently worked at Cape Henry Collegiate where she was an assistant teacher. There she supervised and interacted with students doing crafts and activities based on weekly themes. Prior to that, she participated in a condensed curriculum international program as a pharmacy technician instructor where she taught pharmacy theory and labs, tested and maintained grades and attendance through the Adult Learning Center. She has 34 years experience as a pharmacist and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy and is looking forward to joining Mrs. Humphrey in our pre-K3 classroom.

NEW FACES FOR 2023-24

Sarah Kitchin, Second Grade

Sarah Kitchin will be a welcome addition in our second grade program. She joins us most recently from St. Patrick Catholic School where she taught first, second and third grade. Previously, she taught first grade at Three Chopt Elementary School, second grade and Kindergarten at Great Falls Elementary and junior Kindergarten at The Steward School. She has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from James Madison University and her master’s degree in education curriculum and instruction from the University of Richmond. She’s very excited to join the Collegiate community, so pop in and welcome her to Collegiate when you’re at the lower school.

Alex Marlins, Lower, Middle & Upper School Strings

Alex Marlins joins us as our new lower, middle and upper school strings teacher and brings a plethora of experience with her. A Virginia Beach native, Alex grew up surrounded by music and began her journey with piano lessons from her mother at age 5. She picked up the violin in Grade 6, and has continued adding instruments to her repertoire. She has a bachelor of music education from Lee University. Her musical talents also include stints in STAHR and the Virginia Children’s Chorus, as well as ensembles such as Lee University Chamber Strings, Symphony Orchestra, Choral Union and Percussion Ensemble. Post degree, she completed Suzuki certification in Violin Units 1-3 with James Hutchins. She currently performs with Symphonicity, Virginia Beach’s symphony orchestra, and serves on her church’s worship team.

Julie Williams ’13, Kindergarten

Julie Williams may be a familiar face for some faculty and staff, seeing as she’s a member of the Class of 2013, and she’s ecstatic to be returning to her alma mater! She will be joining Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Roman in our growing Kindergarten. She most recently comes from Episcopal Day School in Augusta, Georgia, where she was a second grade and Kindergarten teacher since 2018. Prior she worked at Athens Academy and Downtown Academy as a substitute teacher. She’s also a SeeSaw administrator and ambassador and GoNoodle ambassador where she worked on the teacher resource platform. Outside of the classroom, she has mentored students through Girls on the Run and has been a cheerleading coach. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Georgia.

UPPER SCHOOL

CJ Fayton, Upper School Dean

CJ Fayton joins us as our upper school dean. He brings with him a wealth of experience and passion developing leaders, and creating space for students to learn and grow from their experiences. He comes to us most recently from Norfolk Academy where he taught middle school history and world cultures while also serving as a mentor and resource for college bound student-athletes. He has a bachelor’s degree in sports management, a master’s degree in recreation administration and a juris doctorate from the University of Tennessee where he played football and basketball. His career has lead him to positions with the Univeristy of Tennessee, Maryville College, The Ensworth School, Norfolk State University and Vanderbilt University where he was responsible for an array of areas including leading and mentoring students, serving as member of the athletic intervention team, Title IX deputy coordinator and more. His genuine interest in helping our students develop into young adults of character and substance is evident, and we are delighted to have him join our community. Please stop by the upper school office and introduce yourself.

Susan Moore, Upper School Math, Middle and Upper School Design Thinking and Computing

Susan Moore is joining our upper school mathematics and middle and upper school design thinking and computing department teaching Algebra 2, Computer Science 6 and AP Computer Science. Moore has more than 10 years of teaching under her belt and joins us from Alaska where she was an elementary STEAM specialist with the Juneau School District. There she was responsible for integrating coding into classrooms at six different schools. She was also responsible for teaching middle school students math and coding and digital citizenship in elementary classes. She also taught upper level math and computer science courses at Annandale High School, Bishop O’Dowd High School and Justice High School, where she was named teacher of the year. She has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the United States Coast Guard Academy and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. We’re elated to have her joining our community and look forward to the challenges she will bring to our Oaks.

NEW ROLES

ADMINISTRATION Ron Chupik, Director of Safety

This spring, Ron Chupik became Collegiate’s first director of safety. A familiar face to students, faculty and staff, he had served for seven years as Collegiate’s facilities manager and as such, was deeply involved with the school’s safety and security program. He has a deep commitment to our community and the Collegiate experience while having the expertise to lead our school-wide safety program. Before coming to Collegiate, he had a 20-year career in the Norfolk Police Department. He spent the first four years as a patrol officer before moving to the detective division. During his career he received numerous accolades, including Officer of the Quarter and Officer of the Year. He has had extensive training in emergency preparedness and response by the City of Norfolk and is a certified member of the Community Emergency Response Team. After retiring from the Norfolk Police, he obtained licensing as a contractor and was the sole proprietor of SEC Enterprises before coming to Norfolk Collegiate in 2016. As director of safety, he will coordinate our program while leading future security enhancements and planning. He will also oversee daily operations with the Silbar Security personnel. MIDDLE SCHOOL

Heather Holt, Assistant Director of Athletics

Another familiar face is Heather Holt. Sports and fitness is her passion, and we’re so excited to announce her increased role as assistant director of athletics. She will continue her role in our middle school health and physical education program, but will now have increased responsibilities in our athletics department. She brings with her a plethora of experience in coaching, having served as Old Dominion University’s head women’s lacrosse coach and as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at The College of William and Mary. When not in the classroom or in the athletic office, you could find her on the Franklin Family and Mathas Family Fields coaching and mentoring our varsity girls lacrosse and field hockey teams. She’s also a proud mom to Jackson ’23, Parker ’25 and Reece ’29. She holds a master’s degree in sports management and a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Old Dominion University.
