Office News Introducing the Quebec 4-H 2013-2014 Executive Committee President Sarah Enright is 19 years old and has been a member of Richmond 4-H for the past 4 years, as well as a member of MacJac 4-H for 3 years. Her projects include dairy, horse and square dancing. She is currently in her final year of social science at John Abbott College and will continue at Bishops University next year, hoping to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher. Her favorite 4-H memories are of all of the great people she has met and friends she has made through 4-H activities! This year, Sarah hopes to encourage people to participate in projects that are new to them! She views this year as a great start to the next 100 years of 4-H and looks forward to celebrating the International Year of Family Farming in 2014. Vice-President Andrea Soesbergen is 19 years old and a member of Huntingdon and MacJac 4-H. She has been involved with 4-H for 10 years, participating in dairy and square dancing projects . This will be her second year on the provincial executive. Currently she is studying in Agro-Environmental Sciences at McGill and hopes one day to work as an agronome. Her favorite 4-H memories are “any activity that has allowed me to meet new people from across the country. The exchanges I went on and the national opportunities like Citizenship Seminar and National 4-H Conference”. Her vision for 4-H is to increase membership, and create networks that allow 4-H members to connect with each other and with members of similar organizations for rural youth.
Andrew Hickey, Sarah Enright, Mathieu Rouleau, Julie Neal, Andrea Soesbergen
Chair of the Programs and Regulations Committee Julie Neal is 20 years old and a member of the Ormstown 4-H club. She has participated in many projects throughout her 10 years in 4-H including dairy, goats, public speaking, life skills and currently focuses mostly on square dancing. She is in her second year at McGill University, in English Literature and International Development Studies and hopes to one day work in international affairs. Her favorite 4-H memory was when she had the opportunity to go on the Garfield Weston International Exchange to Jamaica.” It was inspiring to see how 4-H is run in other countries and it pushed me to get more involved on a provincial level.” Her vision for the future of Quebec 4-H is to make sure that the membership and awareness increases in our province and that the current members take advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities that 4-H places on our doorstep. Chair of the Financial Committee Andrew Hickey is 21 years old, has been a member of the Shawville 4-H Club for five years and this past year joined the MacJac Club. Throughout this time he has held a board of director’s position and had the opportunity to show dairy. Once he is finished his schooling he aspires to either return home to work on his farm or enter in to the agri-loans business with a bank of FCC. His favorite 4-H memory was when he represented Quebec 4-H at the National Citizenship Seminar (Citsem). Andrew encourages everyone “to think about taking part in the opportunity if you have the chance to do so”. His vision for 4-H is for the organization to continue to grow and for 4-H members to be the leaders of tomorrow. Past-President Mathieu Rouleau will be 21 this December and he is in his 1st year of Agricultural Economics with a minor in AgiBusiness at McGill University and lives on his family farm in in St-Chrysostome. 2014 will be his 13th year as a member of Howick 4-H, where he has participated in square dancing, garden and dairy projects. His career goals are “to market dairy genetics while also working closely with promoting agriculture.” Mathieu’s favourite 4-H events are the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and Provincial Rally. He has held many positions at the club level and is involved with the Provincial Advisory committee. Mathieu has also gone on two trips with Exchanges Canada, attended Citizenship Seminar in 2010, National Conference in 2012 and the Global Youth Ag Summit in 2013. His vision for 4-H is: “To maintain membership, increase numbers and advertise what 4-H gives you.” December 2013

A group of nine participants representing the Southwest Region of Quebec were selected to go to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair for the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic held November 1st to November 4th. Discovery Day 2013 Cheese and Karting By: Chris Nieuwenhof

On October 26th, several members from different 4-H clubs got the opportunity to take part in Discovery Day which was held in Hatley and St-Alphonse de Granby. We visited the Fromagerie La Station, they specialise in organic cheese. The owner of the cheese factory is also a 4th generation dairy farmer, so they use the milk produced from their dairy cattle. The farm is home operated and they sell their produce all over Quebec. We also got a tour of the facility where they age the cheese. At the end of the tour, we were able to taste some of the cheeses made at the factory.

In the afternoon, participants had the chance to try their hand at go-karting, which proved to be very difficult in the rain! Throughout the day, participants were encouraged to take photos to later submit to a photo contest that was held through the Quebec 4-H Facebook Page. Prizes included a cheese prize pack from Fromagerie Le Station de Compton and a voucher generously donated by Karting St-Alphonse. 1st: Jer Lin Poh 2nd: Shinae Hartley Honorable Mentions: Angela

Provincial News
Annual General Meeting On November 30th, 38 4-H members from different clubs across the province as well as leaders, alumni and Quebec 4-H staff came together at the Centennial Center on Macdonald Campus for the Annual General Meeting. Morning activities included a formal meeting outlining the coming year for the association. As a result, the Annual General Meeting for 2014 will be hosted by MacJac 4-H at Macdonald Campus on Saturday, November 22nd, and the Richmond 4-H Club stepped forward to host Provincial Rally in 2015. A host club for Innovative Ag Tour 2015 still needs to be confirmed. The new executive members were elected (learn more about them on page 3) and the 2013—2014 board of directors was announced. When the meeting was adjourned, members had a break for lunch. During this time, Executive Director Lorelei Muller presented short video clips on Agriculture More than Ever and Shout Out for Ag, both initiatives put forward by Farm Credit Canada, a national sponsor of 4-H. During the afternoon, while committee and board members participated in their respective meetings, other participants sat down together with their regional clubs to discuss the activities and events they hope to organize and participate in this coming year. Members were also asked by Ag Liaison, Chelsea Daniel and Office and Communications Assistant, Norma Tolhurst to brainstorm ideas of things they would like to see from Quebec 4-H, be it resources, or cool ways to promote their clubs. Once the board of directors finished their meetings, everyone reunited in the main room to listen to members give club reports and individuals present provincial and national events that they had the opportunity to attend in the past year. Everyone then scurried off to get ready for the evening’s celebrations! See pages 10-11 for full story.

Provincial News Quebec 4-H Celebrates 100 Years of 4-H By: Angela Neal, 100th Anniversary Project Coordinator
Date: November 30th, 2013. Time: 5:30 p.m. Place: Ballroom in the Centennial Center of Macdonald Campus, McGill University. The tables were set up and covered in purple and green. Party favours so generously donated by the Ag community, and place mats had been laid out. There were 8 chairs at every table, the caterers had arrived and were adding cutlery, the band was setting up and the bartenders were getting ready to serve punch. I had 15 minutes to get changed. It felt like the calm before the storm. In a few minutes, guests would start arriving at the ticket table and the whirlwind would take off. As I put the last pin in my hair, I took a deep breath and prayed it would stay in place! I stepped into my shoes, did one last mirror check and headed out to the reception table where volunteers would soon meet me. Thank God for volunteers! The first guests began to arrive and the murmur of conversation in the ballroom landing began to grow. As I was joined by 2, and then 4 volunteers at the ticket table, and things start getting really crazy, I directed people into the ballroom to check out the historical displays so carefully laid out by the clubs. As the line died down I looked around and marvelled at the number of people – over 200! – that were milling around, catching up on old friendships, and already enjoying the evening. As 7:30 approached, everyone was invited to find their seats and the evening program was underway! A greeting by Valerie Pearson, the Canadian 4-H Council President, the singing of O-Canada by our very own Andrea Soesbergen accompanied by a ceremonial carrying of the Canadian flags by our new board of directors kicked off our 100th Anniversary Celebration in style. A history of 4-H groups in Quebec presented by alumni of all ages was followed by dinner, and a dance that many will remember for years to come. Many memories were re-lived, many laughs were enjoyed as old friends made a new memory, at a new event, this is a new inspiration, and a new tradition to carry forward. 4-H is most definitely an organization like no other, instilling values and ideals that will direct alumni throughout their lives. I truly hope everyone in attendance had a ball! Here’s to 100 more years, and I hope to see you all in 2019, when we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of when we all came together for the first time, the 50th Anniversary of the Quebec Young Farmers Association! Cheers!

National News
National Conference By: Andrew Boersen This year I had the great opportunity along will Rebeca Gabriel to participate in the 2013 4-H National Conference from Wednesday November 6th to Sunday November 10th. The topic of the conference was Sustainability in Agriculture; we discussed how we could raise production naturally with a lower cost. This conference brought delegates from across Canada to Toronto, with 80 people there it was a busy weekend with animated discussions and a lot of laughs. The first day we got there it was mainly just getting to know one another and we had meetings with our different committees. There was a speaker and sponsor committee whose responsibilities included: Informing us on the speakers and thanking our sponsors. There was also a social rec committee that was in charge of running ice breaker games and social activities. There was a flag committee that carried in the flags of all the provinces and territories during the opening ceremonies and the banquet. Last but not least was the Media and News Committee who every morning gave us the news and let us know what the weather was going to be like for our day. The second day we visited Guelph we had a few speeches in the morning one of which was by Clayton Robins who spoke about Dense-Energy Forages: A Path to sustainable Beef Production. After this we got to visit the University of Guelph, where we received a tour of the university seeing all of their research that they are doing pertaining to agriculture. Later on that evening we went to see a medieval times show. The Friday we went to a school in downtown Toronto to get a presentation by Foodshare which is an organization that is trying to promote agriculture in cities by planting rooftop gardens on schools. When we returned to the hotel we had a presentation by Sears who is a sponsor of 4-H Canada. After this we did open space technology sessions, which are two 45 minute discussions. We were split up into groups according to interests in the discussion topics which were chosen by delegates, for instance I proposed a topic on the differences in provinces agriculturally. After supper we as a group created posters on what we thought 4-H would look like in the next 100 years. We then proceeded to play a social rec game to round out the evening. On the final day of activities we visited the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, which all the delegates seemed to enjoy. Following this we had the choice of climbing the CN tower or going shopping. Mid-afternoon we went back to our hotel and it was time to get ready for the banquet. We enjoyed a great meal, after which the President of 4-H Canada addressed the delegates on the future plans for 4-H including a few videos. We concluded the banquet with a social evening and dance. Unfortunately, like most good things the conference had to come to an end. On the Sunday everyone began leaving for home, some early some late. However, we all agreed that this was an amazing conference filled with excitement and new friendships.

Online Auction Fundraiser After much consideration by the Financial Committee, on February 3rd, 2013 the Quebec 4-H Board of Directors voted to proceed with a new provincial fundraiser in the form of an online auction. The auction was officially launched at Provincial Rally in July. Sale items were added to the site throughout the summer and fall. A freak windstorm on the closing date of November 1st caused the web server to crash within the final hour of the auction and a decision was made to delay the close of the auction from 1:00pm to 7:00pm. Overall however, the fundraiser was considered a success and much positive feedback has been received. Proceeds will assist with 4-H programming at the local and provincial levels. Clubs which contributed sale items will retain half of the income from those items. The balance will go to Quebec 4-H which will pay auction expenses such as the website, printing and postage. Bids totalled $4125.44 with resulting profits of just over $3580. Quebec 4-H is grateful to the following individuals and enterprises for their support of this fundraiser.
