Ormstown 4-H Achievement Day By: Ella Bryson, Ormstown 4-H Reporter

This year Ormstown 4-H held their Achievement Day on August 17th from 9:00am to 4:00 pm. The day started off with judging. All Ormstown 4-H’ers had to judge a 4th lactation cow class held at Riverbye Farm. We also had to judge 2nd cut haylage and beets. The judge for the beets was Caitlin MacDougall and the judge for the haylage and cows was Chris Rember. All 4-H’ers were asked to bake either cakes, sweet bread or squares. We were also asked to bring in our crafts from the craft day last year. The judge for the baking and crafts was Rosemary Mason. For lunch everybody was asked to bring a salad. We had salads and corn for lunch along with sandwiches. All of which was made possible by the many parent volunteers from our Club. Following the lunch was the show. There were about 12 heifers and 1 chicken, the judge for the show was Chris Studer. After the show there was a small ribbon and trophy ceremony and then we got to eat all the prize winning baked goods!! The day turned out great and it was really fun. Thank you to all the judges and volunteers who made this event a real success!

Huntingdon 4-H Achievement Day By: Chelsea Daniel, Agricultural Liaison

Members of Huntingdon’s 4-H club gathered on a sunny Friday morning in early August to present their accomplishment and hard work during their annual Achievement Day. In the morning the Garden Project was extremely well represented by many dedicated young members, projects from floral arrangements, to scrumptious bread animals, to carrots, onions and even alien tomato posters were on display. After a break for lunch, Jason Ness, a Howick 4-H alumnus, judged the afternoon dairy show which included Pee Wee showing and a friendly Municipality competition. The Achievement Day was capped off with the decorating of a Huntingdon 4-H parade float. It was a very successful day and was the beginning to a beautiful weekend at Huntingdon fair.

Hatley 4-H Pig Scamble at Ayer’s Cliff Fair By: Jessica Goodsell, PR Assistant

On the Thursday night of Ayers Cliff fair this year, the Hatley The next morning, was the 4-H conformation and showmanship competition where members presented their projects ranging 4-H club hosted a Pig Scramble where all members under twelve who wanted to participate were given the opportunity from poultry to cattle. to capture a piglet that they could then take home and raise for themselves. The event was organized as a spin on musical chairs, where there were a few more participants than pigs and the competition was on! Taking place between the stage and the grandstands, the competition was organized into several heats and divided by age, giving the younger members a chance to capture a pig before the older and often stronger members took their turn. There were instances of fierce competition between two members over the same pig and others of teamwork despite only one person being able to take the pig home. After all of the pigs were rounded up it was time to proceed to the judging competition where the categories included silage, dairy and beef calves, and chicken identification.

Shawville Fair By: Norma Tolhurst, Office and Communications Assistant As per tradition, the 158th edition of the Shawville fair was held on Labour Day weekend. For members of the Shawville 4-H club, this long weekend meant lots of activities to be involved in. Thursday day night began with the opening ceremonies which featured a speech by this year’s Shawville fair Ambassador, April Judd, a 13 year old member of the Shawville 4-H Club. On Friday, the arena was busy with steer judging followed by the local Achievement Day. Members young and old demonstrated their skills in showing sheep, rabbits, chickens, beef and dairy. In the evening, many people gathered as the steers which were judged earlier in the day were auctioned off for as high as $3.50 a pound. Saturday, the 4-H Regional show was held. The day finished off with the Supreme Champion Showmanship class, where the top 2 showman of each livestock category, tested their skills with all the other animals shown that day. Congratulations to Poultry showman Tyler Tubman for winning this prestigious competition. The Pee wee Showmanship class was definitely a highlight of the weekend. Attracting quite a crowd and large number of participants on Saturday morning, the youngsters showed confidence in presenting a variety of animals During the weekend, Quebec 4-H Staff also assisted with educational presentations during the school visits, teaching the kids a little bit about the organization through a series of fun activities. Havelock Fair By: Chelsea Daniel, Agricultural Liaison

“It never rains on Havelock fair”, unless it does. Despite the November-like rain that poured down on Saturday, September 13th, 4-H’ers from across the Chateauguay Valley made the most of the 143rd edition of the Havelock fair. At 11 am the Ormstown 4-H Square Dancers entertained the crowd with their dance sets and reels, which has become something of a yearly highlight for fair-goers. Their Caller, Janice Barr, made sure that none of the dancers felt the chill weather by keeping their hands passing and skirts swinging. Later, members took the bad weather in stride and made sure that the dairy show was also well represented, spectators were happy to watch the competitors from the shelter of the pole building. It is without a doubt that 4-H members and leaders alike made this year’s Havelock fair a delight for the visiting crowds, regardless of the rain.

Summer Junior Camp By: Lindsay Gruer, Howick 4-H

Excitement grew as the summer 4-H Junior camp approached. As I had only just joined 4-H this year, this was to be my first experience at camp and the first time I was away from my family. My mom kept telling me that I would have so much fun and not to be nervous about anything. I knew some of the kids from school and from the 4-H club, but I was excited to make some new friends too. Our first job was to put the tents up and get our sleeping arrangements sorted out. After that we did some fun activities than had our supper of corn on the cob and hot dogs. That night we sat around the camp fire and sang songs and told stories, we also cooked some beavertails over the campfire, and then it was time for bed. The following days were busy cooking meals, doing activities, going to the beach, having campfires and generally just having fun. We also got to learn about the solar system, which was the theme of this year’s camp. We also got to make bottle rockets and that was a lot of fun too! Although it rained on Wednesday when we were packing up to come home, it did not dampen my spirits. I was happy to be going home to see my family and pets, but I was sad to say goodbye to my friends and the chaperones. I can’t wait to go to winter camp now!

P.S. This summer camp was really “Out of this World”! Be sure to check out the submissions from our Alien Drawing contest in Junior Junction on Page 15!

Special thanks to Sears for helping to make this event possible!

When its done cooking, wait a minute for it to cool, and enjoy!

1. Coat a cookie sheet with a non –stick cooking spray. 2. Unroll sections of the crescent rolls flat onto the cookie sheet. If desired, use cookie cutters to make fun shapes with the dough.
