CANCELLATION POLICY: “Participants registered for a 4-H provincial activity, with the exception of Rally which has its own policy, will pay a cancellation fee equivalent to half of the registration fee for that activity if they cancel within 10 days of the event.”

The submission deadline for each issue is the 15th of the month preceding publication (i.e. the 15th of January for the February issue). Enjoy skits, crafts and games, all while exploring nature and the great outdoors. Bring your camera. Members will learn about the solar system, constellations and invasive alien species.

REGISTER BY: FEBRUARY 1, 2014 Tour various farms and agribusinesses in a particular region, and learn about best business practices and innovations. Members gain a firsthand understanding of the successes and challenges faced by producers in the agriculture and agri-food industry. Participants will be billeted with local 4-H families.

REGISTER BY: MAY 1, 2014 Leadership Camp is a great way to meet other Intermediates and learn about 4-H provincially and nationally. Come build teamwork and communication skills and have fun! Learn the basics of how to run a meeting and use a budget while splitting up into “clubs” or teams at camp and completing challenges. Enjoy outdoor adventures like wall climbing, archery and kayaking. Practice your cooking, campfire and other skills learned at junior camps while developing the skills to make you a great leader!
REGISTER BY: JUNE 1, 2014 As the biggest and busiest of Quebec 4-H’s annual activities, members compete for club and individual points with one or more personal projects. They also take part in fun things like the farmers’ Olympics. Clubs arrive and register Thursday evening. Classes and competitions are held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Winners are announced at the banquet on Saturday evening. Billeting is available and camping on site. Members may enter one or more project in: Public Speaking Life Skills Livestock (beef, dairy, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep) Clubs can compete for points in: Costume Class Fitting Competition (beef, dairy, sheep) Barn Decorating All members participate in the judging competition. Late fees will apply to all registrations received after June 1 st.
DISCOVERY DAYS January 18, 2014 Destination: TBD Discovery Days are one day outings for senior and proven members. Visit agricultural enterprises then top the day off with adventure such as rock climbing. Help design the program. In 2013 members visited an organic cheese production and went Go-Karting!

APPLY BY: NOVEMBER 1, 2014 If you would like to travel to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan on an agricultural or home management exchange through AgriVenture Global, you could win $3,000 towards your program expenses (costs range from $4,000-$8,000 depending on length of trip and location). Applicants must have reference letters to confirm they have been in 4-H for at least 2 years and must submit their application to Quebec 4-H by the deadline. Quebec 4-H will forward 1 application to the national selection committee. Only 1 nationally-selected applicant will receive the scholarship. Contact Quebec 4-H for the application. See page 5 for more details about the program.

The CIBC/4-H National Volunteer Leader of the Year Award Value: $100 per provincial winner + $2,000 for National winner Number: 10 (1 per province) and 1 National winner Nominate your leader at: apply.4-h-canada.ca/ APPLY BY: DECEMBER 2014 This award is designed to celebrate and recognize the commitment made by all 4-H volunteer leaders in Canada. APPLY BY: January 1st, 2014 Details: The Canadian delegates will spend approximately 4 weeks individually travelling around their selected country while staying with host families. The last families to host the Canadian delegates will be those of the international delegates who will travel to Canada later that summer. Canadian delegates will be the first family to host their international partner when they come to Canada. Delegates must be mature and able to handle new situations with ease. Interest in a career in or closely related to agriculture, forestry or fisheries is preferable.
AGRIVENTURE INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURAL EXCHANGES Who: Anyone aged 18-30 years old, with varying levels of experience in agriculture, horticulture or home management Cost: Varies depending on location and length of stay APPLY to AgriVenture at: www.agriventure.info/index.php Young Canadians gain work experience in agriculture, horticulture or home management, while traveling to the UK, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, or Japan. Trips last between 3-13 months. Participants can chose to work at different businesses and travel through 1 or more countries during their trip, or stay in the same place. Try life in another country! See page 4 for the 4-H AgriVenture Scholarship- you could receive $3,000 towards your program!
U.S NATIONAL 4-H CONFERENCE Canadian 4-H Council Who: 1 delegate aged 16-21 Location: Washington, DC Date: April, 2015 (includes orientation in Ottawa) Fee: $350* APPLY BY: DECEMBER 1, 2014 Details: The delegates from Canada will attend the National 4-H Centre in Chevy Chase, MD, where 300 American 4-H delegates will participate in educational sessions, consulting groups, roundtable discussions and presentations, and skillbuilding workshops. They will also visit points of interest in Washington like the Arlington Cemetery, the Smithsonian Institute, Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill. Input from delegates in roundtable groups is presented to US policy makers. *= delegate may also be responsible for additional travel and accommodation fees if national funding is not available.

Participants learn about production, processing, marketing and use of dairy products, and develop a broader understanding of careers available in dairy production, biotechnology, genetics, marketing and other areas. The conference consists of workshops, speakers, tours and visiting the World Dairy Expo. Interested in attending? Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture Value: $150 - $1,000 in prizes Who: Junior (11 to 15) and Senior (16 to 24) APPLY BY: SEPTEMBER 30, 2014 Contestants prepare a 5- to 7 minute speech on one of five agriculture-related topics, and present it at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Saturday November 8, 2014. To assist competitors to get to the competition, CYSA will pay for 2 nights’ accommodation at the official host hotel. Participants who deliver their speech on competition day will be reimbursed for their room booked under the CYSA rate. The overall Public Speaking champion from Provincial Rally of that year will receive a bursary from Quebec 4-H equivalent to the registration fee to CYSA, plus an additional $100 to assist with transportation costs. 6

Quebec 4-H encourages all members over the age of 16 and other volunteers to chaperone provincial events, including: Winter Junior Camp Summer Junior Camp Leadership Camp (18+ yrs.) Senior Members’ Weekend (25+ yrs.)
Chaperones are often required for events such as: - Provincial Rally - Judging team events (including Agribition) - 4-H Youth Exchanges Canada etc. - The TD Youth Dairy Classic
Volunteers over the age of 21are needed to chaperone 4-H Canada-organized events such as: National 4-H Citizenship Seminar National 4-H Conference USA National 4-H Conference Quebec 4-H pays the registration fee for chaperones attending provincial and national activities listed above. Chaperoning at a provincial or national event provides volunteers with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and gain broad experience. Before national events, chaperones receive guidelines for chaperoning, as well as an orientation by conference call. All leaders or volunteers must pass the Quebec 4-H screening process before being recommended to attend a national event.
Teams or groups are usually selected locally from clubs as are the chaperones. These opportunities are a great way to help youth develop their skills, while playing an important role. Chaperones for all events/groups must be screened by Quebec 4-H. Many events provide more information about chaperone responsibilities, or charge reduced/no fees for chaperones.

NEW EVENT! 4-H Canada Volunteer Leadership Conference
PROGRAMS AND REGULATIONS COMMITTEE (ProReg) Do you love planning events? Want to be involved in the activities Quebec 4-H plans? Are you interested in policies or event planning? Then ProReg is right for you! The 5-15 members of ProReg are selected at AGM, and serve a renewable term of 1 year, and must include at least 2 Provincial Directors. The committee is responsible for selecting delegates for National 4-H programs and host clubs for Quebec 4-H programs. ProReg is also responsible for all Provincial regulations, policies and activity guidelines, etc. If you are interested in volunteering on ProReg, let a Director or the Quebec 4-H office know and try to attend AGM!

4-H Canada will hold a National Leadership Conference in Ottawa from Thursday, February 20th – Sunday the 23rd, 2014. Note that sessions actually end on Saturday the 22nd and that the 23rd is reserved for travel.
Each year at the AGM, the Board of Directors selects 3-10 members to sit on the Financial Committee for renewable 1 year terms, along with the President and Vice-President. The committee is responsible for reviewing the budget, program costs, salaries, membership fees, and other related issues.

CANADIAN 4-H COUNCIL (C4HC) YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE (YAC) Quebec 4-H currently has 1 member representative that sits on the YAC for a 2 year term. YAC is made up of 4-H representatives (members or alumni) from each provincial organization and provides a youth perspective to the national working groups. The YAC representative participates in conference calls for YAC as well as 2 or more national committees. The representatives also help plan and chaperone a nationally-run conference. The Quebec representative also sits on the Quebec 4-H Board of Directors with a vote. CANADIAN AG LITERACY WEEK When: Where:
Share your knowledge of agriculture with students during Canadian Ag Literacy Week.
Cost: free for all QFA members, $5 for others.
BILLETING AND BEING BILLETED: If you are new to 4-H you may not know that for some of our activities, accommodation is arranged with local 4H host families who billet one or more 4-Hers for the duration of the event. This is usually the case for Provincial Rally, Annual General Meeting and Innovative Ag Tour, although alternative options (like camping, hotels) are sometimes also available. All host families must be screened every 3 years, to comply with Quebec 4-H standards. Consider billeting the next time it is offered– it is a great way to meet new 4-Hers and see a different part of the province, and it’s free!
