Rally 2014
Rally from the Host Club’s Point of View Written by members of the Howick, Huntingdon and Ormstown 4-H Clubs The 39h edition of the Quebec 4-H Provincial Rally, hosted by the clubs of the Chateauguay Valley, was held this year at the Ormstown Fairgrounds from July 17-20th. In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Ormstown fair this past June, the host club chose “country fairs” as this year’s theme. Thursday was a day of introductions and games. It began with close to 100 members from across the province arriving at the fairground with their club and projects. Everyone set up their packs and decorated according to the theme. Members then participated in the opening ceremonies and then later that night the Farmer’s Olympics where they were able to meet the other participants. Balloon shaving, hay bale throwing and tug-a-war were some games organized for the Olympics. As per tradition, everyone ended up covered with shaving cream. Friday started bright and early with the Life Skills competition. Before the event, participants had a number of entries they could participate in which followed the theme of country fairs. An astounding 18 pies, wind chimes, quilts, flower boxes and more were judged and on display for the weekend. Life Skills participants also had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on-site in a compulsory origami class. Nearly 20 public speakers presented speeches throughout the morning as well. Their topics ranging from “Why I love my country fair” to “Why I am choosing a career in agriculture” demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills from members young and old. Afternoon and evening activities included a Judging competition, and a humorous costume class featuring rodeo clowns and even a paparazzi. To top off the night, clubs also worked together in a fitting competition, demonstrating their skills in dairy, beef and sheep. Saturday’s show day featured conformation and showmanship classes in dairy, beef, sheep, horse, goat, rabbit and poultry. Top 2 showmen in each animal were then chosen to participate in the Grand Champion showmanship class. The evening’s banquet commemorated top winners for the weekend and celebrated the achievement of all participants. The Ormstown 4-H Club was awarded top club aggregate and many other prizes for Judging, Life Skills, Public Speaking, etc. Dancing followed into the night. A successful and action packed weekend was enjoyed by all, and everyone is looking forward to next year as we celebrate the 40th edition of Provincial Rally in Richmond, Quebec.
The Spirit Award This award is presented each year to a 4-H member who best exemplifies the 4-H motto ‘Learn to Do by Doing’ while demonstrating their leadership skills. This award is to encourage participation in all of the Rally’s activities with enthusiasm. This year’s award was presented to Ormstown 4-H member Carrie Simpson. Carrie’s efforts before the event with organization at the host club level, and especially with the meals was vital to the success of the weekend. Participants and chaperones also noted her enthusiasm and how she helped the other members of her club and encouraged younger participants during the judging competition. Congratulations Carrie! Presenting the Spirit Award this year is Alain Rouleau, a dedicated Rally chaperone for the last 10 years for the Howick 4-H Club.
A Special Recognition After suffering an injury Friday evening, Joshua McOuat of the Lachute 4-H club, came back determined on Saturday morning to continue with the show day activities. Because of his of good sportsmanship, the chaperones wanted him to receive a special acknowledgement at this year’s banquet.
