Santa visit to light
D
Majestic: Caernarfon Castle by night.
White Christmas: A blanket of snow covers Caernarfon.
ISCOVER seasonal delights in Caernarfon, this Christmas. Walk its historic streets and examine its pleasant blend of local shops and branded stores, all nestled perfectly in a picturesque setting. But there is much more to the town than simply shopping and you will find plenty of events for the whole family to enjoy in the build up to Christmas 2008. Galeri Caernarfon, for example, has a packed schedule of fun-filled Christmas events to look forward to. For its big, pre-Christmas concert, Galeri Caernarfon has organised ‘Yn Dilyn d’Olau Di’ by popular composer Robat Arwyn. Described as a grand concert, it will combine performances from Bryn Terfel and Annette Bryn Parry with songs from the pupils of Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle. It will take place in the theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 16-17 at 7.30pm, priced £10 for adults and £5 for children. The Sound of Christmas Tonic is at 2.30pm on Thursday, December 11. Just £4 for adults to attend, it features popular duo Piantel, consisting of harpist Dylan Cernyw and pianist Annette Bryn Parry. These two will team up with the tenor from Betws Gwerfyl Goch, Trebor Edwards, for a very special Christmas Tonic. Then, immediately following the performance from Piantel you can join in communal carol singing in Galeri’s foyer, led by pupils from Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen. It’s a free event, so there’s no excuse not to be among the first to hear Galeri’s
Packed schedule: Galeri Caernarfon. Christmas Carol 2008, especially composed for the occasion by the young people of SBARC! (Galeri’s Arts Project), under the direction of Manon Llwyd, and performed today by guest singer Meinir Wyn Roberts. Events elsewhere in Caernarfon will come thick and fast this Christmas. On Friday, December 5, the Ysgol Glanaethwy Choir will perform on Y Maes, as part of the celebration of switching on the lights of the town’s Christmas tree. The choir have performed on TV as part of the BBC’s ‘Last Choir Standing’ programme. Bring the kids along to see Santa in his grotto at the top of Pool Street in Caernarfon, every Saturday in December: 6th, 13th and 20th. Don’t miss the nativity play and lantern

Then, at 5.30pm the shops are awarded the prizes for the best window dressing, followed by the nativity play and then festive carols in the indoor market. Children will be able to get their skates on this Christmas because the ice rink is returning to Caernarfon. Cyffro Caernarfon Cyf, a not-for-profit company which was formed by a group of business people, has organised events on the Maes every Christmas for the past four years. This year, the group has invested in an ice rink following the success of hiring one in recent years. This Christmas will also see the return of the big screen. O you think men are difficult to buy for? Do you get the same old gifts for the men in your life, year after year? And when you give them their gift each year, do you half suspect it’s not quite what they were hoping for? Well, fear not. Using our guide to what men want, this Christmas you can get them a gift to suit their personality, that way you’re sure to choose something they’ll like... ● Adrenaline junkie If the man you’re buying a present for is a lover of all things adrenaline-fuelled, scary but fun, then there’s no shortage of excitement and thrill-filled gifts available. An Alpine skiing trip may be out of your price range, but give your loved one the next best thing with vouchers for a local ski slope. Indoor karting is one of the fastest growing adrenaline sports in the world. Bring your friends and family, or even workmates, and

challenge them to a truly exhilarating race! ● Hot shots What do you buy for the man who has everything? Alcohol, perhaps? So called ‘serious’ whisky drinkers bang on about the joys of the single malt, getting more haughty than wine tasters when it comes to the flavour and technique behind their distilled beverages. Apparently though, over 3m men are unsure if they may find the taste of the single malt too ‘challenging’. Enter The Singleton™ of Dufftown, apparently one of the smoothest and most likeable whiskies for men who do not necessarily know a lotabout single malts but would like to
explore more. Then again, if they’re already into their whisky, the Jura Elements series of special edition single malts could be perfect. Earth Fire, Air or Water – which one would suit them best? ● Big Boys’ Toys Probably the most popular male-centric gifts this year will be technology and toys for big boys, from fold-away goal posts to electric scooters. At one time, the exciting world of Scalextric racing cars were aimed squarely at children. Not any more, though. This year, the fast driving little
table-top cars might be skidding into a living room near you, thanks to 007 and Top Gear versions of the popular tracks and cars. Digital cameras look to be a popular present again this year, and Nikon’s Coolpix series offers some of the best. Or, step up to a Nikon D60 for amazing results from a quality piece of DSLR kit. Or, if it’s cool colours and a trendy design, Fujifilm’s new compacts in the FinePix range are the way to go.
What women really want
N
OW is the time to get your thinking caps on, because whether it’s your partner, mother, sister or grandmother, women can be tricky people to buy for. No matter what your budget there’s sure to be the perfect gift in store and there’s plenty to choose from It isn’t easy finding the perfect gift, it could be something simple such as a book, DVD, or maybe you’re looking for stocking fillers such as the fabulous ‘after party shoes’ that are now available, letting women take some spare, comfy shoes with them to the party for on the way home. Pampering gifts are always a good choice. If you’re not sure what to get, deep moisturisers and exfoliants will give beautifully smooth skin. There is a wide range of sets
Pampering: The No7 Protect and Perfect gift set from Boots available with many natural products hitting the stores, along with age replenishing and anti-aging products, but be careful not to offend! Perhaps you could treat the special lady in your life to a spa weekend or a romantic meal for two in her favourite restaurant? If she is a wine lover, you could buy her a gift
set of wines from around the world, or even take her on a trip to a vineyard. It doesn’t just have to be perfumes and jewellery, electronics such as digital cameras, MP3 players as well as game consoles such as the Nintendo DS have brought women back to the gaming market. If you’re looking for something for the older generation then photo albums, hamper sets and jewellery make beautiful gifts that any woman would be happy with. Antique and collectable items have seen a resurgence in popularity during recent years, and there’s something to suit all ages and interests. Or maybe she’s a keen golfer, gardener or fitness fanatic? Whatever her interests, you’re sure to find great gift inspiration in North Wales.

Festive fun for all the family P
ICK up everything you need for Christmas this year in Pwllheli. There’s no need to trek away from the Llyn Peninsula, as the Pwllheli area can offer you a wide range of goods and services covering pretty much all your Christmas needs. There is a great selection of different shops, from famous high street stockists to smaller local or independent stores which allow you to spot original and unique gifts and other bits and pieces for the Yuletide. You can buy everything from electrical goods and toys for the children to attractive presents for the one you love such as jewellery and huge bunches of flowers; even handmade goods and crafts, great for mum or Auntie Sue. If it’s food you’re after, stocking up the cupboards for the Christmas siege, or just something a little different for your seasonal table, there’s no shortage of food shops, delicatessens, butchers’ and bakers’ shops offering a selection of local produce or delicious goods. Of course, you’ll need to take a break from your shopping spree, so stop by one of the town’s fabulous eateries or cafes. You’ll find everything from takeaway snacks, sandwiches and warming pub lunches, right through to restaurants serving up full
Christmas dinners and more. In fact, why not stay longer in the town and take full advantage of its seasonal hospitality? There’s certainly no shortage of B&Bs and hotels around. Don’t miss the weekly market, either, on Wednesday at Y Maes. Saturday, December 6, sees a Christmas Fair taking place at Penlan Chapel from 10.30am to 1pm with cakes, Christmas puddings, raffles and more. There’s plenty on at the local theatre, too. Neuadd Dwyfor is hosting an exciting Christmas calendar full of seasonal sparkle. Friday, December 5 sees the Conwy Valley Mixed Choir perform a concert of carols, solos and excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. Then, on Saturday, December 6, Martyn Geraint – one of Wales' best known children's entertainers and SC4 presenter – stars in a new pantomime. There are some more concerts in the build-up to Christmas including carols and songs with the pupils of Ysgol Morfa Nefyn on Thursday, December 11; while December 16-18 sees Coleg Meirion Dwyfor’s annual show come to the stage in Pwllheli, singing songs from hit musicals in the Welsh language. Christmas time in Pwllheli is certainly an event not to be missed.

Christmas carols
A not so silent night I
T wouldn’t be Christmas without music. Whether your taste is for the best of Slade or the more traditional Silent Night, a good Christmas song can create a festive mood quicker than a mince pie. So, to get you in the Christmas spirit, here’s a couple of carols to sing along to. All together now...
O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie. Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light. The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth. How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may his His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in Be born to us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell, O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

RE you feeling Christmassy? If not, get behind the wheel of your ‘sleigh’, and head for Anglesey. In fact, the Christmas season is well and truly underway on the island. Plas Newydd historic house’s Christmas Weekend event takes place at Llanfairpwll this weekend, Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7, and again on December 13 and 14. And there is plenty planned to entertain the whole family in true seasonal style. This weekend, this National Trust gem is hosting a Winter Fayre from 11am until 4pm, complete with wonderful craft and food stalls to tempt the Christmas shopper. Take a seasonal stroll at 11am in the company of the resident gardener, and enjoy a fascinating talk, ‘In search of Rex Whistler’, by Peter Simpson at 2pm. Whistler was the renowned artist whose huge painting within Plas Newydd has proved a huge draw. Curious guests will definitely not want to miss the ‘Putting the House to Bed’ tours taking place the following weekend
Winter warmers: Step back in time at Plas Newydd. (December 13 and 14) at Plas Newydd. Another must is the Christmas Carol Concert with the Conwy Valley Singers, which takes place amid the perfect acoustics of the house’s Music Room at 2.30pm on both days. Indeed, Christmas carols never fail to mollify even the most Scrooge-like of souls. So be sure to make a date in your

pantomime fun is like Santa without Rudolph – it just isn’t done! Flock to the Ucheldre Centre on Wednesday, December 10, Thursday, 11, Friday, 12 or Saturday, 13 with the whole brood, and hiss and boo with the best of them at Jack and the Beanstalk. A winter walk is just what the doctor ordered at what can be a stressful lead-up to Christmas. The 8.5km Menai Winter Walk takes place this Sunday, December 7, starting at Brynsiencyn Car Park. This leisurely circular walk leads through fields and lanes to Tal y Foel before following the Menai coast back to the village. Organisers request walkers wrap up warm and wear suitable footwear in order to gain maximum enjoyment from this seasonal experience. Dreaming of original Christmas gifts? Then why not call in at Oriel Ynys Môn? Here you will find a musthave, high quality collection of craftwork, all displayed in a relaxed and equally inspirational setting.

simply, this special corner of Wales has it all. From the bracing, Blue Flag beaches of Benllech, Holyhead, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay, to idyllic countryside and quiet forests, the biggest island in Wales never disappoints those in search of seasonal solace. Anglesey’s Newborough Forest is reputed to have the world’s second largest raven roost (you might have seen it featured on BBC2’s Autumn Watch, recently). The forest is also home to the extremely rare red squirrel. Fancy viewing the island from the back of a horse, then why not mount up at the Isle of Anglesey Riding Centre, Tal-y-Foel? Anglesey offers oodles of inspiration for photographers and artists too, so be sure to pack your camera. Welcoming guesthouses, cosy working farms, luxury spas, comfortable hotels, romantic selfcatering cottages, and caravan sites are all on Anglesey for the choosing. Whatever your taste, Anglesey has everything you need this Christmas.

Christmas Showtime
It’s panto time W
ITH festive fun, yuletime mayhem and Christmas buffoonery upon us once more, it can only mean one thing – the arrival of panto season. No Christmas is complete without a family trip to the theatre, whether for some good natured ritual booing of baddies or an afternoon of mulled wine and carols. And this year the region looks to have outshone itself once again, boasting a phenomenal line-up of pantomimes, shows and comedy throughout the whole of December and January. A fantastic combination of sing-a-long-songs, dance, laughout-loud comedy and true love, the British pantomime is in now an undeniably essential part of Christmas, with many families and adults eagerly anticipating their annual excursion to the panto each year. Typically aimed at children, panto tells the magical story of our favourite fairy tales or folk lore including classics such as Cinderella, Aladdin, Dick Whittington and Snow White to name but a few, and is often a child's first experience of live theatre - and one they'll never forget. Originally believed to date back to the Middle Ages, pantos

boast a fascinating history and over the years have adapted to include many different aspects of theatre from around the world. Today however, they have become an incredibly popular Christmas accompaniment - and with many productions featuring stars from TV past and present, it can also be a great opportunity to see your favourite actors in action. You don’t have to visit one of the larger theatres for high quality productions and entertainment either. Many smaller theatres, amateur dramatic societies and community groups put on first class productions over Christmas,
and offer brilliant value for money. What’s more, this tradition of a trip to the theatre, has now extended with many other shows too, and if you fancy seeing something different Christmas is a great time to catch some brilliant performances. From allsinging, all-dancing stage productions boasting lavish sets and glamour, to top stand-up comedians and music acts or even dramatic plays, there are theatre tickets out there with your name on! So for an unforgettable night out guaranteed to get you in that holiday mood, book your seats for panto today!

No need to wing it with cold turkey A
SK most people what the downside of Christmas dinner is, and they’ll probably say eating nothing but leftover turkey for days afterwards. Trying to find something tasty and interesting to cook with the leftovers from a roast dinner is one of life’s perpetual struggles. But not any more. With a little time and imagination, it is possible to create a delicious variety of turkey dishes which your family will want all year round.
