In need of a good deed? Ask a farmer

ARMERS have many skills but of all their attributes, one rarely receives much credit. The profession’s image, once much maligned, has improved vastly over the past decade. However little is ever made of the sheer generosity of farmers and the wider rural community. Some, such as raising money for the Royal Welsh, is embedded in a sense of duty, but much of it is not. I was reminded of this when Conwy farmer Llyr Jones was named the 2016 NFU Cymru / Principality Welsh Rural Community Champion, having helped build schools in countries across Africa and Asia. Not that he wanted to take the credit: to fund his efforts, the community of North Wales had raised more than £40,000. Each donor deserved the award, he said. Another story crossed my desk recently – that of three-year-old cerebral palsy victim Betsi Vanda Roberts from Flintshire whose parents need to raise £50,000 for a spinal operation. The local community has already donated £8,000 for physiotherapy and now Lord Newborough has contributed £500, as Betsi’s dad used to work at Rhug farm. There are numerous other examples, from the cash that flooded in for Rhys Lewis, the Machynlleth farmer whose spine was crushed under a fallen tree, to last month’s concert fundraiser organised by

Shire breeder Gwynfor Lloyd Jones. Neither is it just about money. In an emergency, from road accidents to house fires, farmers are often the first on the scene. Others will rush to rescue injured walkers or help stranded motorists. A host of annual events do raise money however, from tractor runs to sheepdog trials. Each year the donations emanating from rural North Wales must be close to £1m, reflecting the sense of shared responsibility that is the hallmark of tightly-knit communities. Such altruism – so often odds with farming’s public perception – is all the more remarkable when you consider the difficult times the industry has experienced in recent years.
