HE joyous season of Christmas is almost upon us, and Prestatyn will be playing host to many celebrations and events over the coming weeks. Few, however, will be more anticipated or enjoyed as Prestatyn Parish’s Festival of Christmas Trees. Returning to the town for its third year, the 2008 event promises to be bigger and better than ever. So from Monday, December 1 – just as the Advent calendars start their countdown to Christmas – until Saturday, December 6, visitors to the Parish Church in Prestatyn will be able to cast their eyes over the 30 or so trees on display inside the church. The trees will all have been specially decorated by local groups, schools and other organisations, from a wide range of ages and interests. It may be a fun event, but there’s also a competition element to it with £500 prize money to be won, along with three cups to be awarded to the best adult, school and non-school junior entries. It’s the votes of visitors that decide the prizes, so make sure you come along with the family and choose your favourite. Along with the fantastic spectacle of all the decorated trees; visitors will be able to purchase refreshments, browse the Christmas card and craft stalls, or win a prize on the tombola. What’s more, there will be daily musical interludes by local schoolchildren for your entertainment while you enjoy the Festival. This year’s event is being sponsored by Pontins Holidays and Prestatyn Town Council. The church will be open so that visitors can enjoy the displays 1pm-8pm from Monday to Friday, and 10am-5pm on the Saturday. You’ll find there is ample car and coach parking nearby, while admission to the festival is just £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Christmas Showtime

It’s panto time W

ITH festive fun, yuletime mayhem and Christmas buffoonery upon us once more, it can only mean one thing – the arrival of panto season. No Christmas is complete without a family trip to the theatre, whether for some good natured ritual booing of baddies or an afternoon of mulled wine and carols. And this year the region looks to have outshone itself once again, boasting a phenomenal line-up of pantomimes, shows and comedy throughout the whole of December and January. A fantastic combination of sing-a-long-songs, dance, laughout-loud comedy and true love, the British pantomime is in now an undeniably essential part of Christmas, with many families and adults eagerly anticipating their annual excursion to the panto each year. Typically aimed at children, panto tells the magical story of our favourite fairy tales or folk lore including classics such as Cinderella, Aladdin, Dick Whittington and Snow White to name but a few, and is often a child's first experience of live theatre - and one they'll never forget. Originally believed to date back to the Middle Ages, pantos

boast a fascinating history and over the years have adapted to include many different aspects of theatre from around the world. Today however, they have become an incredibly popular Christmas accompaniment - and with many productions featuring stars from TV past and present, it can also be a great opportunity to see your favourite actors in action. You don’t have to visit one of the larger theatres for high quality productions and entertainment either. Many smaller theatres, amateur dramatic societies and community groups put on first class productions over Christmas,

and offer brilliant value for money. What’s more, this tradition of a trip to the theatre, has now extended with many other shows too, and if you fancy seeing something different Christmas is a great time to catch some brilliant performances. From allsinging, all-dancing stage productions boasting lavish sets and glamour, to top stand-up comedians and music acts or even dramatic plays, there are theatre tickets out there with your name on! So for an unforgettable night out guaranteed to get you in that holiday mood, book your seats for panto today!

HE countdown to Christmas has begun in Prestatyn with the town’s Christmas lights being switched on this Thursday, November 27 and to mark the occasion there is a whole day of events planned in the town. This year’s lights promise to be bigger and better than ever with new illuminations having been added to create a dazzling spectacle all the family can enjoy. Santa will be making a special visit to the town during the day on the Rotary Club’s float and at 4pm at the lower end of Prestatyn High Street, the mayor Anne Horobin will officially switch on the lights both on the town’s very own stunning Christmas tree and throughout the town. Local children, teachers and families will be singing Christmas carols and to get everyone in the festive spirit, mince pies and refreshments will be served. And this is just the beginning. The first week in December sees the official launch of Prestatyn’s Santa

Week when a whole host of activities will take place during the week including the Santa Run, the Santa Sing Song, the Last Choir Standing competition, football for the kids, bingo, a disco, swimming, quizzes and even Santa It’s a Knockout. If you can fit in any Christmas shopping around all the events going on in the town then you won’t be disappointed. As well as offering all the high street shops you’d expect there is also a fantastic range of specialist independent shops selling unique gifts that you wouldn’t expect to find anywhere else. Prestatyn is well known for its market days on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays which during December will take on a decidedly festive theme. ● Christmas message from the mayor of Prestatyn, councillor Anne Horobin “Another year seems to have flown past and we face the winter again. I do hope that all of you will have a happy and a healthy time ahead.

Red alert: Join in this year’s Prestatyn Santa Week, including the annual Santa Run. “Perhaps we could make an effort to remember those who are not as fortunate as us. Many people spend the festive season alone. If you know of someone near you then perhaps a

visit would help bring a little happiness to them. “I hope that you enjoy yourselves, have a good break and look forward to another New Year.”

Christmas Decorations

Festive foliage gives decor the kiss of life Berry good: Bring some natural colours into your home.

C

REATING a Christmas wonderland in your home can sometimes end in disaster with the overkill of decorations, but keeping it simple yet festive with seasonal foliage can be the perfect way to go. It’s not just the usual culprits that you have the choice of either, such as holly and mistletoe. Although these are essential Christmas plants (especially the mistletoe), there are plenty of others to choose

from too that will have your room glowing with festive cheer in no time. The fresh smell of a real Christmas tree is something many homes enjoy throughout the season and adding an array of beautiful plants will only add to the ‘Christmas’ aroma. Local florists will have a whole range of real wreaths and can usually make them up especially how you like them, whether it’s something large

for your front door or maybe a table style arrangement with a centre candle. The striking beautiful red of a poinsettia is the ideal way to brighten up a room at Christmas, once the festive cheer starts hitting the shops then most stores will have them available from supermarkets, local florists to garden centres. You don’t have to spend a lot either, you can create your own ‘focal points’ using holly

leaves, pine cones maybe spray painted gold along with twigs and berries to give a lovely winter wonderland feel. Not only will festive foliage enhance your home, but why not give them as a gift too? Beautiful baskets or bouquets can be made up with a variety of plants to choose from, or maybe include them as part of a food hamper? So bring a little bit of nature indoors with Christmas foliage.

Sprucing up FROM amazing artificial spruces to sweet-scented fir trees, Christmas just wouldn’t be complete without a sparkling, tinsel-adorned tree. Often the main focal point within the home, Christmas trees are an essential requirement to create that magical Christmas atmosphere, and whether you’re a contemporary fashionista or staunch traditionalist, there are hundreds of varieties to choose between. For those who prefer to fake it, artificial trees can be an easy low maintenance option, and there is now an excellent choice of convincing and stylish trees on the market. Ranging from contemporary slim-line varieties, fibre-optics, and inverted trees to more traditional 7ft spruces and classic pre-lit branches, you’re sure to find the perfect match. And, as you’ll be able to use them year after year, they can also work out as a more costeffective option. Alternatively, Christmas just

wouldn’t be Christmas for some people without a real tree, and they make a stunning addition to any home. Able to add that special festive something, there are many varieties to choose from, and, whether you buy a fresh pre-cut spruce or a potted Christmas tree ready to transfer straight to the garden post Yuletide festivities, there's something to suit every family. Nordman firs and Scots pines are famed for their high needle retention, and both the Norway and Blue spruce are incredibly popular for giving off that magical scent of Christmas. And, as an added bonus, real trees can also be environmentally-friendly, so are a great option for eco-conscious Christmas shoppers. Whatever you want, you're sure to find your dream tree.

Fir crazy: This slim-line tree from B&Q will fit in any size home.

ELEBRATE Christmas in the historic towns of Denbigh and Ruthin. The Christmas festivities in Ruthin kick-off properly on Friday, December 5, when there will be a late night shopping event in the town, with free parking at all pay and display car parks from 4pm. There will be many great shops and boutiques open for business until 8pm, with mince pies and seasonal drinks available. St Peter’s Square will host Ruthin Town Band from 4pm onwards; while the Mayor, Councillor Hafina Clwyd Coppack, will turn the Christmas lights on at 4.30pm, followed by carol singing.

Then on Saturday, December 6, the shopping extravaganza continues all day. What’s more Santa will be in his grotto deep within Ruthin Gaol, and Ruthin Christmas Produce Market will be on from 10am-4pm in the Gaol Courtyard and St Peter’s Square. Look out also for a snowball race, and Christmas carolling. Then on Sunday, December 14, there’s a Christmas Carol Concert, from 7pm at St Peter’s Church, with Ysgol Brynhyfryd Choir and Ruthin Youth Brass Band. In Denbigh, the Christmas spirit and sparkle is on its way this Friday as the festive celebrations get underway and the lights get

The festivities start on November 28 from 9am, with the upstairs Town Hall Christmas market as well as the European and People’s Market from 9am until 7pm, including stalls from Denbigh’s twin town Biebertal. From 3pm the celebrations expand with a fun fair, entertainment, music and festive foods. Plus there will also be the chance to pay Santa a visit in his grotto. The salon also offers a ‘tooth fairy’ treatment, which involves the application of a Swarovski crystal onto the tooth. Or you could try a selection of holistic treatments such as reflexology, hot stone therapy, Hopi ear candles and Indian head massage Proprietor Charlotte Allport has years of industry experience, management qualifications and is also a part-time lecturer in beauty therapy. Charlotte is joined by full-time salon manager, Emily Mercieca and part-time therapist, Elaine Kerfoot-Davies. All members of the team are extremely dedicated and friendly and are always happy to help. Why not turn back the clock and book an appointment at the salon’s Botox clinic on December 9 from 6.30pm and December 15 from 6pm? Treatments are administered by fully qualified medical practitioners who offer other services such as vein removal and chemical peels. For peace of mind clients receive a full and detailed consultation before any treatment is undertaken. Get yourself in the party mood by popping along to La Belle Femme’s open evening on December 4th until 8pm. There is a £5 booking fee which is redeemable at the event and there will also be special offers and refreshments available throughout the evening. Clients will receive a free taster treatment and there will also be a representative from Dermalogica on hand giving out free skin advice as well as skin scanning and face mapping. ■ Gift vouchers are available and the salon will happily tailor-make a pampering package just for you – call in to the salon on Marine Road in Prestatyn for more information or call 01745 851 044 to make an appointment.
