Week of fun for everyone

Youngsters enjoy the Eisteddfod’s activities on the maes

HITSUN week will soon be with us and it promises us a truly memorable week for all the family, showcasing the very best in youth cultural prowess. Indeed, an estimated 100,000 visitors will be flocking to this year’s Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the hugely popular annual cultural youth festival. Held this year at the very accessible Gloddaeth Isa Farm, just off the A470 towards Penrhyn Bay, near Llandudno, the Urdd competitions commence on Monday, May 26 until Saturday, May 31. Eisteddfod and Arts Director, Aled Siôn, said: “We have been extremely lucky to secure two fantastic figures from Wales’ cultural pot, talented scriptwriter, actor and director, Mei Jones, and singer songwriter, Caryl Parry Jones, to work on the Opening Night Concert on the evening of Saturday, May 24. “Both have combined to create the script, lyrics and songs for the commissioned musical, ‘Noson Ola’r Prom’ (Last Night of the Prom), making sure Eisteddfod week begins with a bang!” Indeed, North Walian directors Mei and Caryl are currently putting talented young performers from across Wales through their paces, during final rehearsals at Cardiff’s Urdd Centre. Eisteddfod yr Urdd is working jointly with S4C on

Mr Urdd and his friends on the Eisteddfod maes the musical, set during the 60s and 70s – golden era of the seaside resorts – where fun, frolics and the funfair were the name of the game. Mei said: “We envisage plenty of laughter from the audience, and sweet singing from the stage.” In another age group, 100 youngsters from across Conwy county have been busy since November preparing for an experience of a lifetime. They are currently rehearsing for a musical entitled Hedfan, (To Fly), which they are set to perform at the Urdd

Eisteddfod on Sunday, May 25 at 7.30pm. The show, translated into Welsh from the original musical, Featherboy, follows the story of 13 year-old Robert Nobel and his battle to withstand bullying at school, helped by the inspiration of an old lady. Lowri Hughes, Show Director, said: “I was really chuffed to obtain this high standard script from the National Youth Theatre, as it was created specifically for young people.” Hailing from Abergele, Lowri is a member of the script creator’s team for the

S4C’s drama series, Rownd a Rownd. During Eisteddfod week, Lowri will also be adjudicating the main drama competition, and will be President of the Day on the Friday – both considerable roles of honour. Tomos Wyn Williams, 15, a pupil from Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, Llanrwst, will be taking the lead role of Robat in Hedfan. Gifted Annette Bryn Pari will oversee the musical directorship, with professional dancer and choreographer, Cai Tomos (originally from Dolgellau), in charge of dance direction.

F course, the competitions are the key element of the Urdd. Some 15,000 competitors are taking part, all of whom have participated at local and county rounds to make it through to this prestigious national event. Audiences in the main pavilion will be in their element watching Wales’ best youth competitors as they battle it out for the coveted prizes in song, recitation, drama, dance, poetry, prose, musical composition, and much more. With such a variety of competitions, all categorised to accommodate different age groups ranging from 25 years and under, the atmosphere promises to be nothing short of electric. The competitions get under way between 11am and 5pm from Monday, May 26 until Saturday, May 31. Evening competitions will also be staged on the Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Highlights of the week are the main ceremonies, including the chairing of the litterateur and crowning of the bard, the main composer’s trophy and winners of the drama and learner’s medals. What’s more, months of hard work and dedication on the part of Conwy County’s primary school pupils will come to fruition at 7.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27 and 28, when 200 of them will be performing their fabulous primary musical show, Swyn Stori (Enchanting Welsh Stories) – a celebration of the magic and charm of our most-loved

The instrumental competition on the main pavilion stage children’s Welsh literature. The musical follows a young girl’s wish for her parents to read her a bedtime story. Through progressive scenes we follow the development of the Welsh story through the ages, starting with the legendary Maelgwn Gwynedd, and the Welsh bible, translated by William Morgan. The Victorian era is next, with stories surrounding the ‘Welsh Not’, and then focusing on one of the first children’s coloured illustrated story books in Welsh, Llyfr Mawr y Plant. Rala Rwdins, Sali Mali and futuristic robots take us into the present day! Swyn Stori is directed by Arwel Roberts, headteacher at Ysgol Nant-y-Coed, Llandudno Junction. He said: “It’s great to be able to offer the

Welsh Fun In Llanrwst

L

lanrwst is home to one of 10 Language Action Plans across Wales. The Language Action Plan is led by the local community and the Welsh Language Board to bring local people and organisations together to promote the Welsh language.

The fact that the Urdd Eisteddfod is coming to Conwy this year has been a fantastic opportunity for people to socialise in Welsh. First language Welsh speakers and learners have enjoyed all the Welsh activities generated by the Urdd, and the challenge now is to build on this. Activities are organised for all the family, for example the Conwy Valley Mountain Bike Club. You don’t have to be a world champion - qualified coaches are on hand to help everyone, whatever their age, whatever the standard of their riding. And what better way to relax after a day on the bike than to socialise over a barbecue or in a Welsh gig? And are the children forever whining that they have nothing to do? Not in Llanrwst! Puppet workshops and shows, storytelling and writing sessions, and football competitions are just an example of the activities on offer here. Similar activities are held by Language Action Plans in Amlwch, Ammanford, Bangor, Cardigan, Corwen, Fishguard, Gwauncaegurwen, Machynlleth and Ruthin. To find out more about the Language Action Plans or about Welsh activities in your area, contact the Welsh Language Board on 029 2087 8000 post@byig-wlb.org.uk www.byig-wlb.org.uk
