Cultural celebration

A
TTRACTING around 160,000 visitors annually, this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales is being held by Meirion and District on the Rhiwlas Estate, off the A494, near Llanfor, Bala. It runs from August 1 until August 8. One of the world’s greatest festivals, The Eisteddfod provides an opportunity for visitors to be part of a convivial gathering to celebrate Wales’ cultural prowess, The National Eisteddfod was originally held in Cardigan Castle, courtesy of Lord Rhys, back in 1176.
The first Eisteddfod was a grand gathering of invited poets and musicians from all over the country. After 1176, many eisteddfodau were held throughout Wales, under the patronage of Welsh gentry and noblemen. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, an Eisteddfod of historical significance was held at the Ivy Bush Inn in Carmarthen, when the Gorsedd of Bards first became officially associated with this national event. By this time, the Eisteddfod had developed into a fully-fledged large-scale folk festival.
However, the Eisteddfod was subsequently revived and held in its present form in 1861, at Aberdare. In 1880, the National Eisteddfod association was formed and charged with the responsibility of staging an annual festival to be held in North and South Wales alternately and, with the exception of 1914 and 1940, this target has been achieved. The Eisteddfod plays an important role in the life of the nation by promoting the Welsh language and the Arts. It has a firm reputation as a launch pad for Wales’ most talented performers. Indeed,

Eisteddfod, and funding and voluntary support is always gratefully received. Hosted in a different area each time, the Eisteddfod is supported passionately by the people in its particular locality, who are responsible for raising a large proportion of the money through fund-raising activities. What’s more, a veritable army of volunteers give their time and energy selflessly to ensure the continued success of the Eisteddfod. Naturally, Welsh is the official language of the festival, and everything is held
world-renowned Welsh baritone, Bryn Terfel, is a former Eisteddfod winner. The Pavilion – where the competitions, ceremonies and concerts take place – forms the focus of the Eisteddfod. The field (‘Maes’) also accommodates a theatre, an art and crafts exhibition, a literary tent, a Welsh learners’ pavilion (on Maes D), a science and technology exhibition and a pulsating youth tent (on Maes B). In addition to all this, well over 300 trade and other stands are to be found. It costs approximately £3.1m every year to stage the
through the medium of Welsh, right down to Welsh-speaking people manning the stands. That said, there is always a warm welcome for everyone at the Eisteddfod and, in the true spirit of joining together to celebrate and share Welsh culture, equipment is available for those who would like a simultaneous translation service during the main pavilion ceremonies. With something for the whole family to enjoy, the Eisteddfod is a must for anyone and everyone with an interest in the unique Welsh culture.

Cynhaliwyd yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol am y tro cyntaf yng Nghastell Aberteifi, o dan nawdd yr Arglwydd Rhys, yn 1176. Cynulliad godidog o feirdd a cherddorion wedi eu gwahodd ar draws y wlad oedd yr Eisteddfod gyntaf. Ar ôl 1176, cynhaliwyd llawer o eisteddfodau ledled Cymru, dan nawdd bonedd ac uchelwyr Cymreig. Ar ddechrau’r 19eg ganrif, cynhaliwyd Eisteddfod o bwysigrwydd hanesyddol yn yr Ivy Bush Inn yng Nghaerfyrddin, pan gysylltwyd Gorsedd y Beirdd yn swyddogol gyda’r w ˆyl genedlaethol am y tro cyntaf. A range of launches, receptions, seminars and workshops will be hosted on the University stand during the week. One of the main events planned on the University stand is the reunion for former students on Wednesday, August 5 from 2pm3.30pm. This event is set to become a regular feature of the Eisteddfod week, and the aim is to get even
more ex-Bangor students to come along to meet up with old friends and mingle in an informal setting. On Tuesday, August 4 at 11am, archivist Einion Thomas will give a talk about the University’s archive collections, while a new Welshmedium MSc Sustainable Environmental Management course will be launched at 3pm the same day. This event will include a discussion forum focusing on environmental issues in Wales with a specialist panel including speakers from the Countryside Council for Wales, Snowdonia National Park and the National Trust. Other activities include a day of performances and workshops arranged by the School of Music on Friday, August 7. The music then continues at 3pm, with the popular group Gwibdaith Hen Fran providing the entertainment in an event giving prospective students an opportunity to find out more about what Bangor has to offer.

Honours mark university’s special year Pupils get a taste of uni TO celebrate its 125th anniversary, Bangor University recently awarded its first Honorary Degrees in an inspiring ceremony acknowledged as one of the highlights of this special year. One of the world’s most revered public figures, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was one of the four individuals to receive an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his services to world peace and reconciliation. Reflecting on the day, Archbishop Tutu said: “I am
proud to be a graduate of Bangor. It was a lovely celebration.” Also receiving an Honorary Doctorate was broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough. His father studied at Coleg Normal in Bangor, and the family spent many holidays in the area. He said: “I’m delighted and truly honoured to receive the Honorary Degree.” He added: “I’m thrilled, too, because this University has a superb reputation in the study of environmental
and marine science.” First Minister for Wales, Rhodri Morgan, and internationally-renowned chemist Sir John Meurig Thomas were the others to receive the first honorary degrees bestowed by Bangor University. “Our four honorary graduates, the first people ever to receive Bangor degrees, are all outstanding individuals who have each made a huge contribution to our modern world,” said the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Merfyn Jones.

THOUSANDS of school pupils had a taste of higher education this summer as Bangor threw open its doors for a host of events aimed at prospective students. From one-day conferences to residential summer schools, school pupils flocked to the campus to find out more about university life. Well over 1,000 sixth formers from Conwy, Gwynedd and Mon received Higher Education advice and guidance at three conferences organised in conjunction with the local education authorities. And Year 9 and 10 pupils – from schools ranging
from Holywell to Holyhead – came to Bangor for fact-finding visits, arranged as part of the University’s TOP programme for younger pupils. Carys Roberts, Bangor’s head of student recruitment, said the activities were part of the University’s efforts to widen participation and raise young people’s awareness of the opportunities available to them. “It’s been a pretty hectic time on campus, but hopefully the activities showed the school pupils what university life is all about, as well as highlighting what Bangor has to offer.”

The Gorsedd of the Bards of the Isle of Britain first came together in 1792 – not in Wales, but on Primrose Hill in London. It made its first appearance at the Eisteddfod in 1819, and, from the time that the National was born in 1861, its close association has remained. Head of the Gorsedd of Bards is the Archdruid, who is responsible for conducting the Gorsedd ceremonies during Eisteddfod week, which are held to honour literary achievements amongst Welsh poets and prose writers. The Deputy Archdruid, Selwyn Griffith, will lead the Gorsedd Ceremonies at this year’s Meirion
with soloists, Mary Lloyd Davies, Sian Meinir, David Kempster, and Gwyn Hughes Jones. Manchester Camerata Orchestra is conducted by John Pryce-Jones. An Evening of Youth Competitions takes place on Wednesday, from 6.30pm. A full evening of competitions begins at 6.30pm on Friday, August 7. And on Saturday, August 8, at 8.00pm, ‘Ar Noson Fel Hon’, a theatrical evening presenting the best of Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn and Cwnmi Theatr Meirion. OLLOWING hot on the heels of their success at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, the Maes B festival is the place to see Yr Ods, when they join a whole host of other talented bands at the Eisteddfod. In fact, Maes B has played host to many successful bands over the past few years – most of whom return to perform year after year in front of the eclectic Eisteddfod crowd. This year’s festival opens with one of Wales’ most popular performers, Bryn Fôn a’r Band, on Saturday, August 1, with Daniel Lloyd, Elin Fflur, Brigyn and Yr Annoiddefol. Bangor band, Plant Duw, appear on the Monday, with the Maes B Battle of the Bands also kicking off on the evening of August 3. Visitors can look forward to some of Wales’ freshest acts competing for the accolade of being this year’s festival’s best new band. The competition continues on the Tuesday evening, with hip-hop duo, Y Diwygiad completing proceedings. Legendary record label, Sain, which shaped the development of the pop scene in Wales, is
celebrating its 40th birthday this year. On Wednesday, August 5, some of the label’s biggest stars, including Dafydd Iwan, Gwibdaith Hen Frân, Fflur Dafydd a’r Band and Al Lewis Band, will be taking to the Maes B stage. Thursday, August 6, has an equally strong line-up, including Sibrydion, Yr Ods, Eitha Tal Ffranco, Yucatan and Y Promatics, with DJ Bethan Elfyn also appearing. Sibrydon appear following its recent success, with Radio 2’s broadcasters Radcliffe and Maconie praising ‘Campfire Classics’, and their unique style will blend perfectly with the rest of Thursday’s offerings. Come the weekend, Maes B will see a great mix of the best bands and acts working in Welsh today. Friday kicks off with Race Horses, Cate Le Bon – who received rave reviews for her work on Gruff Rhys’s recent album, Neon Neon – Mr Huw, Stilletoes, Y Bandana, and Radio 1 DJ, Huw Stephens. The sex gods of the Welsh music scene, Derwyddon Dr Gonzo, headline on Saturday, promising a night to remember after winning Radio Cymru’s
Rock and Pop Awards’ Band of the Year and Best Live Act. Joining them on stage are Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Jen Jeniro, Creision Hud, Nos Sadwrn Bach and C2 favourite, DJ Magi Dodd. Also performing will be the winner of the Maes B and Mentrau Iaith Cymru Battle of the Bands – sharing the stage with some of Wales top bands; the perfect note on which to end the week-long festival. Maes B organiser, Guto Brychan, is looking forward to Bala. He said: “We’ve got an amazing line-up, and an unrivalled sound and lighting set-up, so we’re confident Maes B will be the pinnacle of the Welsh music scene again this year.” The first Saturday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday events all start at 8.00pm. The Monday and Tuesday start at 9.00pm. And the final Saturday, at 6.00pm. ■ For more information, go to www.maesb.com.
