Is bigger better for dairy farms?

N recent weeks animal welfare groups have turned the heat up on year-round housing systems for dairy cows. Among those singled out for criticism was the Duke of Westminster’s Lea Manor Farm on the Eaton Estate, Chester, which began operating a “zero-grazing” regime in December. Up to 800 of the Duke’s 1,400-scow herd spend 365 days-a-year in two large cubicle sheds and are milked in a rotary parlour. Welfare campaigners say the system is “cruel” and disrupts cow behaviour. Advocates argue year-round housing enables exemplary health monitoring and happy, contented cows. But do dairy farmers have any choice? Such are the economics of milk production, with slim or negative margins, that larger, more efficient set-ups, yielding ever more milk, is often the only way to survive. Around 10% of the UK dairy herd is now kept indoors all year, and the figure is growing. The system offers many benefits, not least from an environmental perspective: slurry could be harnessed for energy production, or spread on fields more effectively. A few years ago the Welsh Government’s Land Use Climate Change Group advocated exactly such an approach. Year-round housing could be a key way of reducing farming’s contribution to global warming, it said. Several big dairy units are under development in North and Mid Wales. Some have been hampered by activists who, incorrectly, have mixed up

zero-grazing with 365-day housing. Zero grazing is all about bringing grazed grass to cows, rather than taking cows to the grazing, and can be run alongside traditional grazing. It allows farms to carefully nurture their most precious commodities – soil and grass – so that forage yields can be maximised. Bought-in feeds are reduced – another environmental benefit – and the milk retains all the benefits that grass-fed cows confer. In the next 40 years, humans will need to produce more food than they did in the previous 10,000 put together. Ramping up production is inevitable, and the efficiencies of scale will always demand ever bigger units. Science has a part to play, but at this year’s Oxford Farming Conference, UK agriculture was criticised for falling behind in the technology arms race. Far too often, however, progressive producers come up against the intransigence of tradition: everyone likes seeing cows out in the fields but someone will have to pay for it.
