State of The Chapter “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last” These words were spoken by Martin Luther King in his “I have a Dream Speech” delivered in 1963. No words better reflect on how we all feel after 18 months of Covid-19. Now we can look forward to a summer of fun and Corvette’s. Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months. • Board Meetings: The board was scheduled and meet on April 8, May 6 and June 3, the April & May meetings were conducted at my home and the June meeting was conducted at Don O’Grady’s house. • Technical Sessions: On April 17, eighteen (18) members attended the front spoiler replacement on Chris Enstrom’s 94 ZR1. No Technical Session was held in May due to our Judging Event. On June 5, twenty one (21) members attended the body lift at Andy Piazza’s house on his 64 Convertible. • Social Activities: On June 26, nineteen (19) members and spouses attended the Spring Social at Lucky 13 in Mendota Heights MN. • Judging School/Events: On May 8, twenty (22) members attended the Performance Verification (PV) Judging School at my shop on Lyn’s 58 Convertible. On May 21 & 22, forty nine (49) owners, judges, tabulators and visitors attended the Spring Judging Event at the Eagan Civic Arena in Eagan MN. Now that we can once again get together, we continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas. Regards, Alden Miles / 612-387-2869 / armiles1226@yahoo.com

Paragon Rewards Program – Wrapping up our Fifth Year

The North Central Chapter is in its sixth consecutive year in the Paragon Rewards Program. In past years the rewards dollars were used as door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. at chapter events such as tech sessions, judging meets, and social functions. In the next few weeks we’ll find out our rewards dollars earned in 2020, and we’ll be sharing that news with you in a future monthly Chapter update or Newsletter. The chapter currently has in excess of 35 members participating in the Rewards Program. We owe a great big thank you to these 35+ members for purchasing Corvette parts from Paragon Corvette. THANK YOU!! If you’re not sure whether you are participating or would like to join those members participating just email Don O’Grady. E mail ogradydon1800@g mail.com. There is no need to have purchased from Paragon Corvette in the past. Every little bit helps the chapter.

Membership Update Summer is here and we are well on our way to another busy Corvette Season. Our spring chapter judging meet went well with everyone earnCurrent Members ing a Top Flight Award for their hard efforts. It was so nice to see several members at the Back to the 50’s Weekend at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The Iowa Heartland Regional was a couple weeks back and we had great representation from our chapter. The Iowa Chapter put on a super event and were wonderful hosts. We have added nine new members to our chapter which brings our roster up to 150. Andre Montgomery lives in Eagan, MN and is the proud owner of a ‘67 coupe and a ‘16 Z51 LT3. He is also the VP for Classic Corvettes of MN, which we have several of our members that belong to both clubs. Andre has attended several of our events already and met many of our members. Mark Flannery resides in Lakeville, MN. Mark has a ’63 fuelie convertible and a ’67 427/435 convertible. He mentioned that he would like to have the ’63 judged at some time in the future. Jason Albeck lives in Maple Grove, MN and he joined after I reached out to the NCRS members in our area that were not our chapter members. Welcome Jason to the chapter. Tom Roberts calls St Paul, MN home and he has a ’65 coupe with the 350hp engine. He recently had the motor and transmission rebuilt and is now working on the interior. Tom attended the body off tech session and was able to meet with Elko Perchyshyn, a fellow St Paul member. Pat Regan resides in Burnsville, MN and has owned Corvettes for most of his adult life. Currently he has a white ’66 coupe, 327/300hp and a Glen Green 396/425hp ’65 coupe. Pat says he drives them often so we look forward to seeing them in the near future at one of our upcoming events. Gary Goodyear is the Chairman of the Wisconsin Chapter and he lives in Richland Center, WI. Gary attended our spring judging meet and I saw him again at the Heartland Regional. I know he has a C3 Corvette. He would like to coordinate with our chapter to offer some type of inter-chapter event next year. Hopefully the details can be worked out. That sounds like a great idea to us, especially since we have many members that live on the other side of the St Croix River. Jeff Graff lives in Springfield, MN and he was encouraged to join the NCRS by Chris Enstrom. Jeff is a C4 guy of which he owns five of them. They include a ’96 Grand Sport, ’95 ZR-1, ’95 ZR-1, ’94 ZR-1 and a ’85. Jeff attended our spring judging meet and was very helpful pointing out details about the ZR-1’s that we were judging. Wayne Klassen resides in New Ulm, MN and joined our chapter from the email I sent out to non-chapter NCRS members. Welcome, Wayne! Diane Quackenbush is the Treasurer of the Wisconsin Chapter and lives in Lake Villa, IL. Diane and her husband own a ’03 Electron Blue coupe and a ’04 Commemorative Edition Z06. I met Diane at the Heartland Regional and had the pleasure to help judge her Z06. It is a beautiful Corvette. Diane is going full bore into the NCRS as she is a member of six chapters in our Region V. I love your enthusiasm! Welcome to all of our new members and we look forwarding to seeing you very soon at an upcoming event. Stay healthy and enjoy driving and working on your Corvettes!!! - Jerome Lardy, North Central NCRS Membership Chair

Do I have a tire going down? As an owner of a classic Corvette, you already have a lot of things to keep track of. Am I using the right kind of oil? What about ethanol in the fuel? How often should I change the coolant? What about bias ply tires versus radials? What is the best insurance company to use? This article is going to focus on an easy one. How to better keep track of the tire pressures on your classic Corvette. Starting in the C5 generation, Chevrolet introduced an advanced Driver Information Center that displayed many more pieces of information about the car’s performance. One of those was tire pressures. So what about those of us that are driving a C1, C2, C3, or C4? Up until now, you have to get out the tire gauge or do a visual check before setting off for a drive. There are a number of tire pressure gauge options out there right now that are pretty easy. When I one of the tires on my 1994 went flat, I went looking for a solution. Here is what I found. Amazon has a number of Bluetooth tire pressure sensor kits that use your cigarette lighter for power. The kit that I ordered has a main plug-in piece that goes into the cigarette lighter and has the digital display of each of the four tire pressures. It gives off an audible alarm when the pressures go below a user-selectable pressure. To get the plug-in piece to fit in the lighter for my 1994, I had to buy an additional extension piece. But most of you have an arrangement in your Corvette where you wouldn’t need that. In addition to the plug-in piece, you get a special wrench, five lock nuts, and four tire pressure valve stems. The process to install them is really easy. Just take your existing valve step caps off, put the nut on past where you need it to be, and install the new Bluetooth caps. The new caps will engage the pin in the center of the valve stem so it can read the tire pressure. I find that it takes a block or so before the sensors are reading accurately. Also, the display is sometimes a little tough to see in the sun, so I have to shade it with my hand. But the unit that I bought also provides a USB port. That allows me to charge my phone on longer trips easily. Some of these kits don’t use the cigarette lighter plug-in, but instead pair directly to your phone with an app. I chose not to get one of those, because the last thing I neefd is another app with yet another login and password. If you search Amazon for “Bluetooth tire pressure” you will find a number of systems like mine. Happy motoring! By Chris Enstrom

It is not always what you know but who you know!! As most Corvette owners know, half of the fun of obtaining your car is the hunt for it. Some people buy them at auction, while others purchase their Corvette from a dealer. In my case, my friends were the “driving” force for all three of my purchases. You could say they “steered” me in the right direction. Newspaper Ad Seventeen years ago, I was looking for a mid-year Corvette. I was leaning towards a ’65 model or newer as they had four wheel disc brakes and you could get a big block engine. A co-worker brought in the classified ads from the Minneapolis paper. Who still looks for cars this way in the 2020s? Being a St Paul guy, the Minneapolis paper was foreign to me. In his paper, there was an ad for a split window ’63 Corvette that was located in Burnsville, MN. As luck would have it, I purchased the car and still own it today. Word-of-mouth Six years ago, I decided to find a newer Corvette with an automatic transmission and air conditioning so that my wife and daughter would be able to drive it. Paul Burski, Vice Chairman of our chapter, knew of a work client who was going to retire and move to northern Minnesota. Paul connected me with the owner and a deal was made. This Corvette was 20 years old with only 20,000 miles. It still had the original front tires on it and the original air filter. I put this Corvette through the NCRS system and was able to earn a David Hill, Mark of Excellence Award in San Antonio, TX. I was going for the Crossed Flags Award in French Lick, IN last year but the convention was cancelled due to the pandemic. My goal is to try again in French Lick, IN in 2023. Garage find Now for the final tale of “who you know.” I was not looking for a Corvette. A different co-worker knew friends with Corvettes, so he thought he would possibly buy one too. He was at a party and they were out in the garage. He noticed there was a car covered up in the third stall and asked what it was. A Corvette was the reply. A few years went by and his friend decided he wanted to sell the car, so my co-worker expressed an interest in purchasing it. He went to check it out and decided it was not for him. He suggested that I should see if it was something I might want to buy. It is a white ’79 Corvette with the red interior - think classic 1953 colors. The owner lived only three miles from my house. A little history: my first Corvette was a ’79 that I owned for four months back in the early ‘80s. A friend and I drove it all the way to Jasper, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. That was a great trip. So the nostalgic box is checked off. (Continued on next page)

It is not always what you know but who you know!! From what I could recall 40 years ago and my limited judging experience on C3’s, the car looked pretty original. I told the owner I would like to come back with a friend to check things over and also take it home and put it up on my lift. He had no problem with that. I talked with Bob Lund and Chris Enstrom and they agreed to look at the car with me and see how solid it was. We arrived and talked with the owner about its history and other details. Bob looked over the mechanicals while Chris looked at it from a judging perspective. First thoughts were it looked to be sound so we fired it up and drove it to my house. The Corvette had been sitting for some time and was rarely used in the last several years. The ride was stiff and it made the thump, thump, thump sound of having flat spots from not being driven. There was also smoke coming from the engine bay which we determined to be from leaking valve covers. Back in ’79, they did not have a valve cover gasket but used a sealant in its place. I guess it was not made to last for 40+ years. The brake light was also on, so I will need to go through the braking system. We put the Corvette on the lift and found miscellaneous leaks and minor issues that will need to be addressed. All in all, it is a very original Corvette with 41,000 miles. Chris had me review the “Operations” checklist from the judging sheets to determine what worked and what did not. This is a great tool to use for anybody that is looking to purchase a Corvette. We found a few things that did not work and a missing outside mirror control. Surprisingly, the windshield wipers and washers worked after sitting all these years. Hopefully they will work when I decide to have the chapter judge it. I did receive some paperwork with the car and it was delivered to Princeton Motor Co in Princeton, MN. It was sold on March 19, 1979. The Corvette Birthday Book shows serial number 20992 was built on Jan. 31, 1979. The previous owner provided two receipts for work he had done over the years. The first receipt was dated June 6, 2002 and the mileage was 40954. The second receipt was dated May 15, 2014 and the mileage was 41,082. I purchased the car in May and it had 41,192 miles. This was a total of 238 miles in the last 19 years. I guess you could call this a true garage find. In summary, for me, friends are the way I came to own all of my Corvettes. It truly is not what you know but who you know. Jerome Lardy (45853)

Preparing for Performance Verification NCRS has a variety of awards for owners to choose from. One of those awards is the Mark of Excellence Awards that are named after the Chief Engineers for Corvette (Duntov, McLellan, and Hill). To achieve a Mark of Excellence Award, the owner must complete two Top Flight attempts at 97% or better (once at a Regional and once at Nationals). Additionally, the owner must complete the Performance Verification test. The PV test is setup to make sure that the car performs as engineered by Chevrolet. For example, the power steering pump can’t squeal if the wheel is turned all the way, and the car has to stop in a straight line when the brake pedal is depressed. In May of this year we did a PV preparation Judging School. Our hosts were Lyn and Alden Miles and the subject was their gorgeous 1958 Regal Turquoise Corvette. We spent two hours going over the car and walking our way through the PV manual to make sure the car was in top operating condition. The car did very well during our examination, and there were a few small details for Alden to work on between now and when he brings the car to the Iowa Regional later this summer. For attending a judging school, those of you that aren’t already at 400 points will be awarded another judging point for today’s event. At 100 points, you’ll be awarded the title of Master Judge. If you are interested in learning more about the judging awards that are available, go to www.ncrs.org and click on Services, and Judging Awards. Or you can reach out to Chris Enstrom, your Chapter Judging Chairman at chris.enstrom@hotmail.com or call at 651-503-4165. Thanks again to Lyn and Alden for hosting, and thank you to everyone who was able to come! We had a great afternoon.

Member of the Month

April - Bill Newberg

My wife Bobbie and I will have been married for 24 years in august of 2021. We have two living adult children, Blaine and Amy, both of whom live in the MSP metro area.

We also have two grandchildren, Lavinia, age 7, and Abram age 3, who both love “Papa’s” red Corvette! I’ve always had an interest in cars, but my personal involvement in Corvettes began in high school when my friend, John Ikeda, a long time NCRS member, purchased a beautiful 1965, Nassau Blue coupe. One look and one ride and I was hooked! Just nothing like the view through the windshield of a C2 or C3! My first Corvette was a 1981 coupe bought in 1993 from a mechanic who had fixed it up for his wife. The engine had been blown, so he dropped in an an engine from a newer C4. This made for an interesting classification challenge at a Corvette weekend at what was then Brainard International Raceway! My next car acquisition was a 1991 ZR1 from long time (grade school) friend, Fred Manthey, in 1997. I loved that car and put about 60,000 miles on it, at one point driving it solo from San Francisco to Maine before finally selling. In 2014 I purchased my current dream car, a 1968 numbers matching (with documentation) 427cu in, 390 HP, red convertible through our NCRS tech director, Bob Lund.

Bob was just finishing a frame off body restoration and the owner made a decision to sell. I also have the hard top for the car. I think it’s a rolling work of art and so fun to drive! Bobbie and I enjoy day trips with our close Corvette friends as well as outings with the club. Hopefully we can all get back to having in person fun this Summer after being cooped up for a year!

May - Tim Saarela

Hi, my name is Tim Saarela and I’ve been a member of the North Central Chapter for almost two years. My wife Laura and I reside in Credit River Township and we both grew up in small towns on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. Laura is a preschool teacher at Blessed Trinity School and I’m a software engineering leader at CNC Software (Mastercam). We have two grown children, Neal who sells mortgage products for Wells Fargo and our daughter Erin, an architect at ISG. My very first real car was a 1985 Chevy Camaro purchased off the show

room floor at Ed Rinke Chevrolet, a dealership right down the road from the GM Tech Center where I worked as a systems engineer. Ever since my days at GM, I’ve had a fascination with Corvettes, especially C2s. Over the past few years I’ve been casually searching for a Corvette project car but was put off by the high cost of entry. After turning my focus to a more affordable generation, I noticed a Craigslist ad for Dave Cloutier’s 50th Anniversary C5 convertible in June of 2019. My wife Laura and I were in Chicago for a Rolling Stones concert at the time. I called Dave and decided to make a stop in Hudson on the way home to take a peek. All Dave had to do was remove the cover and I was smitten. What a gorgeous car! Our negotiations weren’t progressing so Dave slyly 15

decided to put the cover back on. Never under-estimate Dave’s negotiating skills! I returned a few days later to pick up the car. Dave was amazed that I drove away with the top down. I’ll let you ask him why. My casual search for a C2 continued and over time only intensified. Just recently I noticed a sweet looking maroon 1965 ‘vette on Craigslist and decided to take a look. I leaned pretty heavily on Chris Enstrom’s extensive knowledge in advance of the visit to help me understand what I was going to be looking at. I remembered Chris telling me that a maroon on maroon combo would be a rare find. The photos showed this one as having a black interior. Using what Chris had taught me to evaluate the trim tag, I quickly realized this car was originally maroon on maroon and had been converted to a black interior by a previous owner. The C2 is now in my garage alongside the C5. I now have a car I can drive anywhere and another that will keep me busy as a project car for years to come. I really do have the best of both worlds! I’m currently developing a game plan for renovating the C2. Ultimately, I want to restore the interior back to its original maroon color. Other key decisions include converting to a date-correct engine, frame-off or not, and whether or not to repaint. I tend to be adventurous and am looking forward to the journey! I joined NCRS at Dave’s urging shortly after buying his car. I’ve attended two fall judging events, last year’s rain-soaked June cruise, and the paintcare tech session from last fall. Larry the trainer offered to demonstrate polishing techniques on my C5 hood and the results were amazing. So far I’ve enjoyed my time as member of the club and am learning a ton. Everyone has been super supportive and extremely willing to share their expertise. I look forward to getting to know more members at future events.

I am engaged to my better half (and other owner) Kitty Caton. We both retired June 2018. I was in sales at Poly-Tex and Kitty worked at 3M. We both grew up and now live in Northfield, MN. Do you have children? Kitty has 2 adult children. Bradley and Lisa. Between them we now have 4 grand kids. Harper 8, Jack 14, Khloe 20 and Cole 22. Corvette(s) that you have: We currently own a 1971 LT1 corvette convertible. 350, 4 speed, manual steering and brakes. Sunflower yellow, saddle interior, with a black top. History of your Corvette(s): When did you buy it (them)? We purchased the car in June of 2014. Our focus was a C3 1969 through 1972. The main criteria was it had to be a Top Flight car. It received a Chapter Top Flight award in 2012. The car has had a total nut and bolt restoration. Do you or your car(s) have a unique story to tell about how you got into the Corvette hobby? What car guy has never wanted a chrome bumper Corvette? I had all kinds of nice cars growing up. Mach 1, XR7, Firebird. It seemed I always had a reason to not buy a Corvette. Then I looked at it from a different perspective. Don’t buy just a car. Buy something collectable. Thus the LT1. Best decision we ever made. Love the car. What else can you say about a convertible Vette during the summer? Kitty doesn’t care to drive much because of the “Armstrong Steering”. Fortunately, that leaves me with the driving responsibilities. What is your next Corvette project? Our goal was to have the car judged at the Regional in Rochester last June, but that was canceled due to Covid. So the car was ready and I was just going to wait until the next one. Then it occurred to us that we could take it to the local Chapter event. Currently we’re putting some final touches on getting the car ready for Chapter Flight Judging this May. I think it would be a great learning curve for the Regional. We’ve gone through the past judging sheets and made improvements where needed. We’re really looking forward to this event. North Central Chapter: When did you join? What activity do you like best? Judging? Car cruises? Tech Sessions? We joined the NCRS 2012 once we really got serious about buying a car. Just receiving the Driveline was a huge help. Also, the technical advice on the website was worth the annual cost.

Judging Report Chris reported that we have Seven (7) cars to Judge – a 61,65,67,71, 90 ZR1, 94 ZR1 and an 03 - with four (4) display cars signed up. Chris says many members have signed up to judge so far and he now has two unassigned judges. All members are invited to attend but we would need to know who is thinking about coming so we can plan for food. Any member who decides to judge will be paired up with an experience judge which will make their experience more enjoyable. Chris suggested we do a C5 Judging School to be prepared for our May Event as we have not done a C5 before. The 03,04 Judging manuals are out and the regionals are looking for 05,06,07 low mileage cars so these manuals can be prepared. Membership Report Jerome reported we have a new member, Mike Wahl with an 86. Jerome is working on the last four (4) members to renew to take us to 143 members. He will reach out to the national members in our region to encourage them to join our chapter. Tech Report Next Tech Session is April 17 at Chris’s house to work on his 90 ZR1. A May 15 Tech Session might be on a shift linkage at Jeromes. Activities Report Don shared that we had 26 people at Mancinis. We gave away three (3) bottles of wine and two (2) $100 Paragon Gift Certificates. The June 26 gathering will be at Lucky 13 in Mendota Heights rather than at Cowboy Jacks. Website Report The Website is current. Newsletter Report The newsletter will go out Friday April 10. Member-at-Large Report Kevin Sullivan reported that Bill Newberg is the Member of the Month for April. We will have Tim Saarela as our Member of the Month for May. Old Business The Twin City Auto Show is being held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds May 15-23. They have reached out to car clubs to see if there is an interest for members to bring their cars to the show. The cars would be displayed outside from 9am-9pm. It was recommended that we pass on this opportunity. MEETING ADJOURNED

The NCRS Judging Process The NCRS has compiled and is constantly updating highly detailed judging standards and rules for each basic model division from 1953 through 1999. The guidelines in these NCRS Technical Information Manuals are recognized throughout the hobby as THE STANDARD in determining originality. The judging system is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. It is not a “cleanliness contest” like other events, nor do you compete against your friends’ Corvettes. Judging is not done by some secret group of “experts”. You can learn to judge, or you can have your Corvette evaluated by other NCRS members. 10,516 members are currently recognized for their judging expertise. They have created 27,871 NCRS judging records through NCRS events internationally to date. New Item Added NCRS has recently announced the addition of an Award Confirmation Document Service. This service will provide a confirmation document with a complete listing from the NCRS database of the available award statistics for a specific Corvette. The presence of this confirmation document will assure the owner of the NCRS judging history on a Corvette.

MAKING JUDGING SHEET REFERENCES BASED ON THE C-D-C-I-F As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars. C = CONFIGURATION D = DATE C = COMPLETENESS i = INSTALLATION F = FINISH The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is. Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed). BAD WORDS:

iNStEAD uSE:

“Wrong”

“Not Typical”

“Incorrect”

“Not Typical”

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as: SigNiFiCANtLY DiSSiMiLAR. A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch. Judging Example: One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination: Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc.) Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected) Completeness: Are any factions missing?? Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)?? Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)?? Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. Total deduction would be 2 points. OuR COMMENtS ON tHE SHEEt WOuLD BE: Configuration (No Pliacell Script / Delco Part Number), Date Provided by Marco Hartner 21
