State of The Chapter

As summer draws to a close and fall slips in to behind it, we are reminded how precious this time is in the Midwest. There is so much to do, between going to the cabin, taking vacations, attending the State Fair and of course going to car shows Here’s a recap of the club events and activities during the past three months.

• Board Meetings: The board was scheduled and meet on July 7, August 4 and September 1, the meetings were conducted at Davanni’s on White Bear Ave in East St. Paul.

• Technical Sessions: On July 16, seventeen (17) members attended the Distributor rebuild and installation on Perry Canton’s 67 Coupe at his house. On July 23, sixteen (16) members attended to work on Andy Piazza’s 64 Convertible at his house. On August 13, fifteen (15) members attended a tour of Lares Corporation in Cambridge, MN. On September 10, seventeen (17) members attended a fiberglass repair on Chris Enstrom’s 94 ZR-1 Coupe at Joe Galindo’s house.

• Social Activities: On August 14, fifteen (15) members attended the Vettes for Vets Car Show in Savage, MN.

• Judging School/Events: On July 24-28 several of our car owners, tabulators and visitors attended the National Convention in Mobile AL. On August 19, twenty-eight (28) members attended the Judging School at Jerome Lardy’s house. On August 20, forty-four (44) owners, judges, tabulators and visitors attended the Fall Judging Event at Steve Henrickson in Long Lake, MN. Now that we can once again get together, we continue to look for suggestions from our club members on how to improve our club events and increase membership participation. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas.

Paragon Rewards Program

Continuing our Sixth Year

The North Central Chapter is in its sixth consecutive year in the Paragon Rewards Program. In past years the rewards dollars were used as door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. at chapter events such as tech sessions, judging meets, and social functions. In the next few weeks we’ll find out our rewards dollars earned in 2021, and we’ll be sharing that news with you in a future monthly Chapter update or Newsletter.

The chapter currently has in excess of 35 members participating in the Rewards Program. We owe a great big thank you to these 35+ members for purchasing Corvette parts from Paragon Corvette. THANK YOU!!

If you’re not sure whether you are participating or would like to join those members participating just email Don O’Grady. E mail ogradydon1800@gmail.com. There is no need to have purchased from Paragon Corvette in the past. Every little bit helps the chapter.

In MemoriamDougBrekke

It is with sadness that I inform you that Doug Brekke, one of our chapter members, has passed away. He was 77 years old. Doug joined the NCRS back in the year 2000 and he was the proud owner of a 1961 Corvette. Doug would frequently attend tech sessions at my home when I was working on my ’63. He always asked questions and had a thirst for knowledge. The last time I saw Doug was on August 5, 2020 for his birthday. This was during the pandemic and his daughter, Sarah, set up a drive-by car parade for his 75th birthday. We had at least four members drive their Corvettes and we joined many other family members and friends for the parade. The smile on his face made it all worthwhile.

The North Central Chapter made a $100.00 donation to the NCRS Foundation in Doug’s memory.

Chapter Tech Session

Welcome to the second installment of “What the heck is wrong with the ‘67 cooling problem”. At the last Tech Session, Bob Lund set cylinder 1 to TDC (top dead center) and removed the distributor for a rebuild and the installation of a breaker less electronic ignition conversion. This tech session was to go over what was done in the distributor rebuild and then reinstall the distributor and check on the thermostat and thereby fix the overheating issue.

Bob took a few minutes to go over what was done in the rebuild of the distributor. There were parts that definitely needed replacement.

• The short wire on the breaker plate was very stiff. Bob could have soldered on a new wire, but replacing the plate was a better solution.

• The long wire to the coil should also be replaced as it can be a source of intermittent shorts. The replacement wire is not an exact match for judging purposes.

• The vacuum advance was rusted and needed a replacement which also may be hard to find with exact matching numbers.

• The cross-drive gear for the tachometer can be problematic and cause damage if loose and wobbles. Bob drilled a brass washer for the cross-drive gear.

Chapter Tech Session

Bob likes to use the “Breakerless Stealth Edition” conversion kit for elimination of points. Everything is contained within the distributor cap and adds additional features that enhance your ignition to solid state electronics. One would think you could just slap the parts back on and off you go. Unfortunately, the distributor main shaft has to be smooth and as clean as it can be. So find your favorite TV show to binge watch and start cleaning and polishing.

Now to install the distributor. Remember that the first cylinder was TDC and Bob knew exactly where to drop the distributor. Easy peasy as they say. Ok, definitely not true, as the oil pump drive shaft also has to line up. Also, it is so easy to be off by a tooth in either direction. So, in reality it took Chris Enstrom watching the timing marks, Bob Lund and Dale Anderson discussing whether to move the distributor one tooth to the left or one tooth to the right. I was left with the arduous task of bumping the engine to get back to the timing mark - I missed the mark quite a few times. Eventually the distributor was in the right spot to set the timing correctly. You only have a small window to set the timing because the vacuum advance hits the intake one way and the coil bracket the other way. The car was running again.

Now on to tackling the overheating issue. As a reminder the car has been running hot since total restoration. Bob removed the thermostat to eliminate a possible problem source and made sure that there was no air showing up in the expansion tank. Bob noted that the heater hoses were routed incorrectly for a factory air-conditioned car. Bob talked about the steel gasket on the carburetor and plugging the holes that allow exhaust gas to pass by for warmth during cold weather. He recommends plugging holes as they are not needed for cars only driven in the summer - eliminates overheating the gas in the carburetor. The same with the heat riser on the exhaust. Recommend that the butterfly be removed or a heat riser spacer installed. That was the end of the tech session. Now I just needed to drive the car. Well, not so fast on the accelerator. Bob took the ‘67 for a test drive and the same issue manifested itself. So here is the addendum to the tech session. I wired the heat riser in the open position. Bob came over and installed a new 180-degree thermostat and added an ⅛ inch hole drilled in the flange and replumbed the expansion tank. Slam dunk you say. Ask Bob about factory air-conditioned cars. Nothing is simple. Bob found a plastic “T” instead of the required metal. The aftermarket hoses do not have the same material thickness making the clamps not as tight. A manual adjustment to the clamp (use of pliers to bend clamp tighter) fixed the issue. Routing the hoses with the Air Conditioning plumbing in place and making the connections was a PITA (loosening the bracket bolt and moving the compressor inwards helped somewhat). Everything in place, re-added coolant and she is running again. Bob recommended driving the ‘67 around the block a few times and checking the coolant level. Bob did not recommend going above 30 mph for a few trips until he gets back from Carlisle. If this fixes the overheating, the car will go to Bob’s shop to cut out the heat riser butterfly, and work on the heat and air conditioning issues.

Chapter Tech Session

The North Central NCRS had a tech session on Saturday, July 23rd at Andy Piazza’s house in Richfield, Minnesota. We had 16 members in attendance.

Andy is currently working on the body of his 64 roadster. At a previous tech session, we removed all of the fiberglass from the front of the car from the firewall forward. Andy was continuing his project by repairing some body damage to the bottom of the body in the inner tunnel area where the transmission and drive shaft meet. We had six members help lift the body off the body dolly and set it in the driveway on its side. Andy then did his fiberglass repair work to the body repairing a couple bad spots. We then flipped the body upside down setting it gently on the birdcage so Andy could complete the body work. Next, we put the car back on the dolly and looked at the rear quarter panels and discussed how to replace them by cutting along the bonding strip lines.

Unfortunately, we had some bad weather heading into the area so we moved the car into the garage and then started to review Andy’s nearly complete driveline. We discussed the front brakes, brake lines, fuel line and transmission.

Andy had purchased a new frame and had some additional welding done to the seams, had it dipped and powdered coated. Andy also installed a new 5-speed Tremec transmission with the help of Joe Galindo. They had to make sure to properly align the transmission to the bell housing. They checked the run out and then installed some offset dowel pins into the back of the engine block. If you install a 5-speed without indicating it in within .005”, you can burn up the roller bearings. When you align the transmission with an indicator, you need to call Tremec and let them know the readings to keep your factory warranty in effect.

Chapter Tech Session

The North Central NCRS had a plant tour of the Lares Corporation from 10:00am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 13th. Lares is located in Cambridge, Minnesota; which is about 30 minutes north of the Twin Cities metro area. We had 30 members and guests in attendance including couple of members from Illinois!!!! Lares Corporation was founded in 1986 with only a few employees. Today, they are one of the largest manufactures of new and rebuilt power steering gears, manual steering gears, power steering pumps and steering components in the U.S. They can re-manufacture any steering gear, pump, control valve or cylinder of any year vehicle while offering a limited lifetime warranty. They also stock new power steering gears, manual steering gears, power steering pumps, power steering control valves, power steering cylinders, rag joint steering couplers and kits. Many products Lares offers are available through your local auto parts stores. Not only can they work on any steering system for a vintage and late model cars and trucks, but they can also repair steering units for forklifts and airport ground support equipment. Our tour guide, Kal Uthe, explained that Lares had over 60 people employed when Covid hit and they had to reduce the workforce down to only 30 people. During the pandemic, their business actually grew over 30 percent because people were home and had time to work on their cars. Many of the employees at Lares have worked in all areas on the company from part rebuilding, shipping, office time and even answering the phones. Not only are they able to answer your questions, but they are all very familiar with the parts and processes to rebuild them.

Kal showed us where they repaired customer’s parts and the test benches they use to verify the parts were repaired correctly. We looked at the assembly benches, part clean up area as well as the shipping and receiving space. They have a few lines set up for specific manufactures to rebuild their components due to the high volume of parts. Lares gets many useable cores from scrap yards around the country, but primarily the Midwest. Lares Corp continues to expand their operation to this day. We were able to see a few areas where they opened up the wall to gain additional space for the company. On a personal note, I had my manual steering box for my 1962 C1 Corvette rebuilt by Lares Corp about 12 years ago. I was not comfortable just mailing my entire steering column to them since the VIN tag in attached to steering column on my car. So, I personally dropped off my column to Lares. They were very familiar with the older Corvettes and they knew they were not to remove the VIN tag for any reason. They rebuilt my entire steering column, repainted it, added new bearings, seals and wiring to make the system better than new. The steering was re-centered so I only needed to get my wheels straight on the car and reinstall my column and put the steering wheel back on. I considered rebuilding the column myself, but the repair kit offered by another supplier was more money than Lares charged me for the parts and labor to do the work -- plus they know what they are doing when it comes to steering. We concluded our tour with a nice pizza party provides by Lares. They also gave each member a couple of very nice fender covers. If you need to have any of your steering components rebuilt or replaced, I would highly recommend getting in touch with Lares.

Thanks,

Travels with Alden

Travels with Lyn and Alden Miles to the NCRS Convention in Mobile, AL

Getting your car ready for judging is not a small task. Now ramp that up to a National Convention and two days driving from your home base. 18 hours, 1157 miles one way. Oh yes, you have to come home. I arrived at the Miles home at 7 am on July 22, 2022. Lyn had packed the truck with food and Alden packed it with tools, besides getting a new hitch installed and loading the trailer with our precious cargo. And then we were off on our journey heading for a Comfort Inn in Festus Missouri. Lyn made us lunch each day as we drove so we could save our stops for gas and bathrooms. Alden’s new truck rode so smoothly that you never realized there was a trailer behind. Each time we stopped for gas we checked the trailer inside and out. The cargo was riding fine. There is something about the 58 that no matter where you see it, it looks like a jewel that should be in a fine Jewelry store. I never get tired of looking at it.

We got to Festus and decided that as long as we were near St. Louis we should have some St. Louis style BBQ ribs and they did not disappoint. After a good nights rest we were off to Mobile. The Journey took us through Iowa to Missouri through Arkansas to Tennessee into Mississippi to Alabama. We saw cities that you read about in Mark Twain or Tennessee Williams. It was exciting. We finally arrived at our Hotel north of Mobile and decided to try some Oysters, Gumbo and Gulf Shrimp at a nearby restaurant, Wintzells Oyster House. It did not disappoint.

We got to the National the Next Morning to get the car in place. There were a lot of cars that arrived on Sunday morning July 24. We had some adjustments to make so that the OPS could be done Monday morning but everything worked out.

After OPS were passed and the 58 went off to the Judging Floor. That evening we had the reception and awards. Alden and Lyn got their 200 point Masters! And Congrats. I got my Masters Hat.

The next day Alden had his assignment with the lift team while Lyn prepared the car.

We enjoyed Judging School assignments then went off to eat Turtle Soup, Gumbo, Crab Soup, and wonderful gulf fish and shrimp. The next day Alden and Lyn went aboard the USS Alabama for a tour.

Then there was the final banquet and the awards. Four Engineers, two from Chevrolet and two from 3M, and Shannon.

A lot of friends got awards too:

And then we were off. Following our bread crumbs back to Festus with Lyn making lunch for the next two days. Then I was introduced to the Texas Road House and had another meal that couldn’t be beat and then our destination. Home.

Chapter Judging School

On September 10th, the North Central Chapter was hosted by Joe Galindo at his shop. We worked on repairing some fiberglass on Chris Enstrom’s 1994 ZR-1. The car ran over something in the dark on the interstate heading down to Iowa. The storage area behind the passenger seat was cracked a bit and just needed some reinforcing. The next step is to sand it down a bit and paint the outboard side black so it blends in a bit better.

After we were done with the fiberglass work, we were fortunate to have a restomod 1961 Corvette to look at. The judging school covered the topic of Concours Judging with NCRS. This particular car was amazing! All the work was done by the owner, from the stitching of the leather interior to the mixing and application of the body paint, to the custom fabrication of trailing arms and frame sections to make everything work. We were all very impressed! This car would have done very well in Concours Judging and is exactly the kind of car we are looking for to come to our Chapter and Regional judging events. If you’d like more information, please contact Chris Enstrom @ chris.enstrom@hotmail.com

After the judging school we all had lunch together and spent some time chatting. Thanks to everyone who came and made it a great event! See you next time!

Road to Master Judge

How Many of You Started Out In This Hobby Wanting To Be a Master Judge?

I know I didn’t. Sure, I liked corvettes but my friend Mark Swanson will tell you that I still like driving my TR6. Like my classmate Joe Soucheray, I just can’t get the British out of my system.

So for 20 plus years I restored a mid- year. It was a work of art, a museum piece. And as you drive your museum piece, there are days you don’t want to leave it just anywhere and there are the days you work on it to have it run or look better.

Then I started to get the yen to drive a Lady in Red and my perspective changed on just getting deeper into the hobby. I started accumulating points. I don’t know that it was yet well thought out, but I was having fun judging cars and going to judging meets. Then someone asked me how many points I had. I don’t know. Where do you look? I tried, but it was not intuitive with the NCRS Website. Oh, it was there alright, just under a few layers. And then it dawned on me how close I was to getting 100 points. You know, Masters Level! So what does it mean to be a Master Judge? Does it mean you know everything - hardly. I think it means you have a good knowledge and are willing to learn more. Remember I started with C2 and am now judging C4 and C5’s. The Technology is different, but the owners and fellow judges are just as interesting, friendly and have some interesting cars. I think the greatest plus I learned is that on the journey I got to meet people who really know the Corvette. It was better than surfing the NET. Here is a snap from the National Convention in Mobile. Here I am with Shannon Urton- President of NCRS being presented with my Master’s Judging Hat at the Membership Meeting.

Have I drank the Kool-Aid yet? Not a chance. Am I a Fan as Chris Enstrom would say, yes that is a good description. Have you looked at your points lately? Login to NCRS, go to Services at the top and select Technical Discussion Board. Then select My Profile and then select About Me. Scroll down. Hopefully you are enjoying the hobby and it doesn’t matter the reason. Dave Murphy

Travels with Chris Jerome, Bob and Sarah. Last Blast Nebraska Sept 22-24, 2022

Our Trip started like all trips, planning, registration, and of course, we picked up Bob. Now don’t get me wrong, Bob is an essential part of any trip. You wouldn’t go out in the rain without a raincoat. You wouldn’t go camping without a tent. Well, you don’t go on a Corvette weekend without Bob. Bob, better known as the Ice Cream Kid, has forgotten more about Corvettes than I will ever know.

Our destination on Thursday was Stuart, Iowa where we would rendezvous with other corvette enthusiasts to journey to Lincoln, Nebraska and Duncan Aviation. We joined with Alden and Lynn Miles, Mike and Bette Murray, Dennis Michalowski and Diane Quackenbush, Ryan and Kristi Clayson, Gary Neimanis, Don Heckenberg and some new friends. It was a fast 2-hour drive, but we made it in time for a great BBQ at our host, Mike McFarland/Norland Pure Water. Did I tell you that the Nebraska Chapter feeds you like you haven’t eaten in a week? For every meal.

The next morning being Friday, some went to the Museum of American Speed and others stayed in the recovery room. We were so tired. It was not like Night of the Living Dead, it was just Dead. I think you could hear snoring to Omaha.

At noon we ate a taco feast that couldn’t be beat and Owners and Sportsman’s got their picture taken with some real airplanes. Then we began judging Operations. Once completed we began another section and then we had hors d’oeuvre (hot and cold snacks) followed by a 4-course meal (Did I mention they feed you well in Nebraska?) and a raffle that Brad Hillhouse is known for, nay, notorious for. Money was raised for a great charity that promotes water safety for kids called Josh the Otter. And the antics that go on in these raffles like raffling off who is going to wear a kid’s bicycle helmet or eat cookies sealed in a box since the 80’s.

It was getting late, so we dragged ourselves back to the hotel rooms

We were awakened by showers (paper thin walls in hotels). And up we got and headed back to Duncan Aviation for coffee and rolls. It was time for a Judging School led by Dave Houlihan which was very good and then we got right to it and dove into the judging. Along about noon, yes you guessed it, more food. It was a lot of fun and then we had the awards. Top Flights all around. And a thank you to all the Sportsman’s that attended. It was picture time and North Central assembled. Smiles all around.

We loaded up and began our journey back to the Twin Cities. Stopping off at Culvers for food and ice cream. Can you believe that anyone would be hungry after a Nebraska Chapter event? I picked up a Nebraska Chapter shirt which I gave to my wife on my return and before I went to bed, I sent the Nebraska Chapter a check and joined their merry band. FINI.

PS. I am not going to get on a scale for a week.

Fall Chapter Meet

The weekend of the Fall Chapter Meet for the North Central Chapter went very well. Thank you to the great group of people that made it happen. Friday night the Lardy’s hosted a BBQ at their home in Eagan once again. The Chapter is so grateful for their efforts to enhance the great times that we all have together. Chris Enstrom gave a judging school on the 1963 Z06 convertible (one of three believed to exist), and then finished with an overview of the NCRS awards that are available.

Saturday, the Chapter membership was hosted once again at Steve Hendrickson’s where we judged six cars for Flight Judging. We also had three cars for Sportsman, plus a number of other Corvettes that showed up. Here are the results of the Meet.

great experience, making new friends and learning from knowledgeable people. I have worked on all my own cars since I bought a ‘57 Chevy when I was 15 years old. As a retired Machinist, it is rewarding to the wrenching on my cars; and I also do the body and paint work. I am looking forward to the judging event in Rochester next June.

British Racing Green with black interior. It’s a 427-435HP car with 26,000 miles on it. 4-Star Bowtie, will be going to Mobile, AL for it’s 5th Star. Also has multiple NCRS Top Flight Awards, Bloomington Gold Benchmark and MCACN Triple Diamond. Need to do a PV and try for a Duntov. I also own a 1970 Coupe, we bought in 1980. It’s an LT-1 with 39,000 miles, Marlboro Maroon with Black interior. Just missed a Duntov award in 1988 at the Lancaster, PA Convention. Hasn’t attended an NCRS meet since. It is also an original unrestored car. We also bought a 2013 Corvette Grand Sport new, Crystal Red Metallic with Cashmere Interior. We did the Buyer experience, watched the car being built and did Museum Delivery. It currently has about 21,000 miles on it. On it’s third set of tires. I think Rosey has driven it more than I.

I have been a member of NCRS since August of 1979. My membership number is 2575. Yes, I am one of the old-timers in the hobby. My wife of 53 years is Rosey, we live in Roscoe, IL. I am the Co-Judging Chairman for the Illinois Chapter NCRS. I share this duty with Jim Anderson. I also belong to the other four Chapters in Region V.

I am currently the 68-69 and 70-72 Manual Coordinator for NCRS. I have revised, with the help or many great people, the last two revisions for each manual. The 5th Edition of the 70-72 Manual was the first COLOR judging manual for NCRS. That was a fight, but well worth the effort.

We have owned several (a polite term for a-lot) Corvettes over the years. I think the oldest I have owned was a 1957. So many cars, so little time. We currently own several cars, not just corvettes. We own an original unrestored 1968 Coupe,

We also belong the Metropolitan Owners Club of North America and own a 1954 Metropolitan Convertible, Croton Green (yellow) with 36,000 miles. Very early car built in January 1954. Original, unrestored car from California. I have held several offices in the local Chapters and one of the Past Presidents of the club. Sold my other two cars last year, one with 9100 miles and another with 9200 miles.

We also own a 1969 Nova SS with 70k miles. 350-4barrel, 3-speed on the floor, dog dish hubcaps, redlines. Marina blue black interior. Another original understored car. See a pattern?

Should I mention the 1950 Crosley Station Wagon? Ahh, better not, might hurt my image. Thanks for having me as a member, I will try and make it up to your Chapter meets.

Dale Anderson shared an interesting activity he had with corvette keys. He wanted to get the correct stamping on a set of keys and inquired what that might cost - $168 each. So he decided to stamp his own and proceeded to discover how many keys he would go through to get it right. He also discovered that the keys had to have the knockouts in tact for judging. The target car for his interest was his 1957 C1. He also shared that he is taking his top to Premier to have it completed. Finally he asked about latches. Are the hard top and soft top latches the same? Dave Cloutier thought not. The latches are different lengths.

Last Thursday night we had a Chapters Chair Zoom meeting with Rick Coker where we discussed the Pros and Cons of the National in Mobile. There were concerns about the service and food at the reception as well as the COVID issues including the awareness announcements. National has been losing money and they continue to review where they can remove costs. The French Lick site is already locked in, but they are considering not having a food reception which could save them $30k. Alden suggested they look at the National Income vs Expenses.

There was also a discussion of the Chapter Guideline and Operations Manual – Page 12 where-in “At no time shall there be Chapter Activities scheduled concurrently with NCRS Regional or national events. Each Chapter will cooperate with its Regional Representative in scheduling meets/events so as to avoid conflicting dates with other Chapters in the Region or with Regional or National events.” The Redmond Regional did not have enough judges. Rick Coker mentioned it cost $1200 for airfare plus additional commuting expenses to the Redmond site. Rick would like to promote Regionals as we go forward. Rick proposed there will be Promotion Write-ups in the Region V Chapter Newsletters.

The Mobile Board Meeting highlighted the fact that our attendees are getting older (Avg Age 2021 61.9, 2022 69.7), the Covid Issues, bad service. The 2024 National will be in Hampton Roads. There is now a separate committee on Concours. Alden recommended that they call it “RestoMod.” The Boards decision on renaming must be approved by the Judging Chair. And the current IT Chair is retiring and the new Chair select should come with solutions to the current Web Site.

2023 NCRS Dates

• Indiana Judging Meet March 31- April 1

• Iowa Judging Meet April 14-15

• Heart of Ohio Judging Meet April 29

• Wisconsin Judging Meet May 5-6

• Illinois Judging Meet May 18-19

• Altoona Regional June 1-3

• Bloomington Gold June 2-3

• NCC Regional June 8-9

• French Lick National July 23-27

Alden again asked the Board Members present if they wanted to run another year. It is election time and Dave Murphy will ask the membership if they want to be on the ballot. Then a ballot will be sent so that the results can be announced at the October meeting.

Vice Chairman’s Report

November 1, 2022 is the re-opening of the Bowling Green Tours of the Production Facility and the Museum. It’s an enormous plant. 1.7 million sq. ft under roof on 212 acres. In 2019 they built 34,822 corvettes and 20,368 in 2020, 26,216 in 2021. They have the capability of producing 184 cars per day. It is recommended that you plan on 4 hours to do the entire tour and museum.

Treasurer’s Report.

Tim reported that all was uneventful.

Judging Report

It was a great BBQ and Judging School at the Lardys and a successful Judging Meet. Chris and Alden have been asked to view Keyes Chevrolet in Menominee for a possible Spring Judging Meet April 29, 2023. This will be a 3 pt event, Chris shared some logo suggestions for 2023 Regional (Thanks Sarah for awesome renditions) and the board responded with comments.

Chris spoke with Joe Galindo and he is going to host the Chapter at his shop on September 10th. We will be doing three things. First, he will be repairing some fiberglass on my ‘94. The NCRS

Membership in the North Central NCRS is open to person interested in the restoration, preservation, and history of the Corvette produced by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Corporation from 1953 thought 1999. NCRS is not affiliated with Chevrolet or General Motors. Membership in the North Central Chapter of the NCRS is open to all members of the NCRS National organization. Dues payable to the North Central Chapter are $25.00 per years. All editorial materials should be sent to Nick Kornder, Editor, (Kornder@NorthernSun.org). Advertising in the North Central Newsletter is free to all active members for personal items. Commercial advertising rates for the newsletter are: $12.50 per year for a business card; $25.00 per year for a half page ad and $50 per year for a full page ad.

Deadlines for articles and advertising are: March 1, June 1, September 1 and December 1 of each year.

The NCRS Judging Process

The NCRS has compiled and is constantly updating highly detailed judging standards and rules for each basic model division from 1953 through 1999. The guidelines in these NCRS Technical Information Manuals are recognized throughout the hobby as THE STANDARD in determining originality. The judging system is designed to educate each owner about their car as well as providing recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation. It is not a “cleanliness contest” like other events, nor do you compete against your friends’ Corvettes. Judging is not done by some secret group of “experts”.

You can learn to judge, or you can have your Corvette evaluated by other NCRS members. 10,516 members are currently recognized for their judging expertise. They have created 27,871 NCRS judging records through NCRS events internationally to date.

New Item Added NCRS has recently announced the addition of an Award Confirmation Document Service. This service will provide a confirmation document with a complete listing from the NCRS database of the available award statistics for a specific Corvette. The presence of this confirmation document will assure the owner of the NCRS judging history on a Corvette.

M AKIIN G JU DGIN G SH EET REFE RENCE S B ASED ON THE C-D- C-I- F

As the NCRS judging system is based on 5 different descriptions for ORIGINALITY, with each having a value of 20%, it is most helpful to the owner, that we use the same descriptions for the comments on the sheets, when we judge their cars.

The use of words like “Service Replacement”, “Reproduction” or “Restoration” are very little to no help to the owner, since they do not describe WHAT the difference to original is.

Since we judge the APPEARANCE of ORIGINALITY, we do not care where the particular judged part comes from (Original GM, Restoration Parts House or Neighbors Shed).

BAD WORDS: INSTEAD USE:

“Wrong” “Not Typical”

“Incorrect” “Not Typical”

Certain parts, which do not reflect any Originality based on the CDCIF (Full Deduction) are not listed on our Standard Deduction Sheet. Such parts may be described as:

SIGNIFICANTLY DISSIMILAR A good example is the typical parts-house (AutoZone, O’Riley etc.) Cooling Fan Clutch.

Judging Example:

One of the most often “non-original” parts encountered on the chassis are the shock absorbers. They are a single line item and have a value of 5 points. Based on the CDCIF we can make the following determination:

Configuration: Check nuances on the shock absorber body (may be different print, “Made in Mexico” etc )

Date: Check for presence of date. (Not necessary, if a non-typical configuration has been detected)

Completeness: Are any factions missing??

Installation: Are the bolts, washers at their intended places and orientation (or reversed)??

Finish: Is the shock painted in a typical finish (lower bushings free of paint etc)??

Conclusion: A shock absorber with “Made In Mexico,” finished and installed in a typical manner would differ in the Configuration (1 Point) as well as the Date (1 point) since we know that a shock with such configuration was manufactured later than the car. Total deduction would be 2 points.

OUR COMMENTS ON THE SHEET WOULD BE:

Configuration (No Pliacell Script / Delco Part Number), Date
