complicated aspects of wedding planning, one who is creative to help make and write invites and place cards, and one who is sensible and rational to help with any family dilemmas and stressful moments. You can have as many bridesmaids as you need and can afford, and you don’t have to have a ‘chief bridesmaid’ or ‘maid of honour’, however do make sure you give anyone you ask to be in the bridal party the option of not being involved and be clear about what costs will be theirs and which ones yours.
WHO: Creating a final guest list can be stressful, especially if your budget is tight, but numbers impact costs substantially so it’s important to be clear about what you can afford. If it’s too hard to whittle down your head count you may want to think about alternatives to the traditional reception such as having guests buy their own meals in lieu of gifts. Using a restaurant for this style of reception is becoming more common, as is a more relaxed catered BBQ style arrangement. Both of these options can cater for larger numbers without blowing out the costs.
CEREMONY: Church or civil ceremony is the first decision to make followed by who is going to marry you. Be clear on the style of ceremony you both want and do your homework when it comes to choosing a civil celebrant. Make a list of who you would like to be involved and what you’d like them to do.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Homework is important here as is booking Pics left to right; Beautiful Weddings, Photo: Dreamstime

your photographer as soon as you can. Make sure you check and double check what you’re going to get for your booking and how much it will cost. If you have a friend who is a stand out photographer ask them to take some snaps or think about minimising the formal photographs in favour of asking guests to send you their snaps of the big day.
THE CAKE: There are a number ways to go when it comes to cake. You can combine it with the desser t course of the reception, provide individual cakes or go the traditional path. If you want to have your cake made, you’ll need to book in well in advance so you can meet with the cake designer, have a tasting and make a firm decision about the final design. Again, if you know a great baker, ask them to make it, but have a clear idea of your design and if possible provide a photograph.
FINALLY: Once you’ve got your big bookings made and your major elements organised it’s time to star t layering the on the more decorative elements of the day. This includes the reception as well as yourself and the groom.
MUSIC OR MUSICIANS: There are many options available to you here. Make sure you understand what your venue will and won’t be able to handle and provide for you then star t looking for solo or group performers or a DJ. Word of mouth is a great way to find new and interesting acts that will suit the mood of your wedding without costing a bomb. Again, think outside the square and consider
including some alternative enter tainment for your guests enjoyment: acrobats, a burlesque dancer, or Spanish dancers can add great fun and difference to your day.
FLOWERS AND DESIGN: Keeping your flowers to those in season is a budget friendly choice, as is going for something less traditional, for example a bouquet of delicate Japanese paper flowers If you know someone creative buy your flowers at the market and get them to make up bouquets or centrepieces for you, alternatively raid the gardens of your friends and family. When it comes to design, less is often more so use the space to your advantage to minimise the purchase of decorations. It’s easy to overdo things at this stage as there are so many fabulous ideas out there. Keep to your mood board, experiment at home with borrowed bits and pieces and cheaper versions before you make your final decisions.
THE GOWN: A wedding gown can be a fabulously expensive outfit for one day of your life and while it is impor tant to have the dress of your dreams, it’s also impor tant to know what suits you and what doesn’t and if you can get what you want for less. Shop around, try on different styles and keep in mind your mood board – the wedding dress should style in with everything else to keep the look of your day flowing. Look at second-hand and warehouse gowns and local designers who do fabulous items for less than you think. If you know a seamstress, or are one yourself, you might be able to design and make your own unique gown.

THE MEETING We first met when we were 17. We were in year 12 and went to different schools and our mutual friend Heather (who was a bridesmaid) introduced us at a party. THE PROPOSAL Matthew picked me up from work on a Thursday afternoon (our 10 year anniversary was coming up). We were driving home & he told me there was a surprise in the glove box. In it was a card he had designed saying that I had won a trip to Melbourne (and Happy 3640 day anniversary) & that I needed to pack my bags because we were leaving first thing in the morning. He had sneakily organised time off from my work with my boss so everything was organised. (I even got spending money to go shopping lol). When we arrived at the hotel in Melbourne Matthew dropped to his knee and popped the question! PHOTOGRAPHY BY APRIL WERZ APRIL WERZ

Have your cake and eat it! When it comes to wedding cake design, Bree is a creative force making major inroads into the local wedding industry with her fabulous designs, passion for her work and desire to help couples top off the most amazing day of their lives with a sumptuous cake. By Nikki Williamson
F
inding your passion can be difficult, following it through to make a successful career out of it, even more elusive for many of us. Yet when you speak to those who have taken that leap of faith, their energy, enthusiasm and pride is inspiring. And so it is with Gold Coast based Bree Meldrum who has been tantalising tastebuds from the bright lights of the south coast of Queensland to Byron Bay and beyond for the last few years. When it comes to wedding cake design, Bree is a creative force making major inroads into the local wedding industry with her fabulous designs, passion for her work and desire to help couples top off the most amazing day of their lives with a sumptuous cake. With an attitude and personality that makes choosing the perfect wedding cake an easier task for brides and grooms, Bree, through her business, The Cake That Ate Paris, has been cooking up a storm becoming one of the most popular cake designers on the Queensland coast. Trained as a chef from an early age, Bree knew from the very start that the sweeter side of the taste spectrum was where her talents, and future, lay. “I have a really sweet tooth and I love being creative,” she says, “so becoming a cake decorator was the perfect way to combine these things”.
24
North Coast WEDDINGS
Yet, like most stories of success, Bree hasn’t had her life changed overnight, instead she’s worked long and hard to get where she is. Combining work as a pastry chef on the Gold Coast, with a weekend sideline, Bree built a loyal following of clients by selling cake pops, cupcakes and sweet biscuits at the local markets before launching The Cake That Ate Paris as a full time business in 2010. It’s a name that catches the eye almost as much as her delicious cakes. “My dad actually came up with the name,” explains Bree. “I’m such an indecisive person and couldn’t for the life of me come up with something myself ”. It’s an unusual name but somehow familiar. “There’s an old Australian film called ‘The cars that ate Paris’,” says Bree, “so Dad changed it to The Cake That Ate Paris and it stuck”. It’s a name of course that’s a little bit retro, a little bit elegant and very much captures the variety and sophistication, fun and uniqueness of Bree’s work. “I was a bit wary of the name at first,” she tells me, “especially after watching the film! But I’m so glad I went with it, it’s had really positive feedback”. And great feedback doesn’t just come from the potential that the name implies, Bree’s cakes speak for themselves as gorgeous, tempting individual pieces of ar t. “I’ve always been ar tistic,” she says. “I come from a very ar tistic family so I’m
lucky it’s in my blood! In saying that everything takes practice, I look at some of my early work and cringe”. It is this persistence and willingness to evolve as an ar tist that has allowed Bree to become such a successful business woman. Yet the hard work doesn’t stop once you begin to experience success, there is always more to do and learn to keep at the top of your game. Indeed, while natural talent helps, the process of designing cakes takes time, effor t and patience, talents that enable Bree to keep refining her skills to offer such perfect cakes to her clients. It’s a process that is impor tant to all those involved – Bree, the ar tist and baker who wants her work to be beautiful and to taste amazing, and the couple who want to wow their guests with something that reflects who they are as a couple and to celebrate their future. It’s a process that Bree enjoys as par t of her job: “I invite couples for a consult and we go through everything including the best par t, the tasting,” she says. “They can then go home and have a good think about everything we’ve discussed and the rest can usually be done through email”. To help the process along, Bree suggests couples do some research first. “It really helps if they already have an idea of the kind of design they are after and how many people they would

THE MEETING At the then popular Sunday sessions at Fishos in QLD! THE PROPOSAL We were in Bali at a secluded beach restaurant. We were the only ones in the restaurant so I think Matt was pretty nervous haha! I was taking pictures of the scenery when Matt said ‘pity, it would’ve been a nice spot to propose’ I looked at him, rolled my eyes and said ‘yeh?!’ then he said ‘well will you?’ It took me a few minutes to believe him! THE WEDDING The wedding all took place at My parents home and the place I grew up. It was a perfect day. The weather was forcast as rain with a possible thunder storm which wasn’t good seeing as the whole wedding was outside with no real back up plan! THE MEETING We first cross paths at our Schoolies break in Queensland in 2006 but it wasn’t until 2009 that we officially met and began dating. From that day onwards we have been taking many adventures together in Australia and overseas enjoying each others company. THE PROPOSAL Jay suggested that I meet him at work at Por t Macquarie Marina where he suggested that we take a ride in one of the boats. The day was absolutely gorgeous, the sun was shining, there was no wind and the water was calm. Jay decides to pull up on onto Pelican Island which is a special place for Jay and I as we often paddle board around it, swim and have picnics there. There on the beach to my absolute surprised Jay turned to me and asked me to marry him. PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIC D PHOTOGRAPHY North Coast WEDDINGS

MEMORABLE MOMENT The most memorable moment was seeing Joel for the first time in the church, he looked as nervous as I felt, and as soon as I was standing by his side I felt at ease.

THE MEETING The break wall at Town Beach, PMQ. New years eve 2000, We were both walking with friends in opposite directions when we stopped as our mutual friends star ted talking. We introduced ourselves and next thing we knew we were walking in the same direction, to celebrate the new year. We ended up watching the sun come up at town beach. THE PROPOSAL We were visiting Tanah Lot Temple, famous for its magical sunsets, Joel decided he wanted to get away from the crowds so we climbed up to the nearest headland, where we had the most beautiful view of the temple, sunset and beaches, almost all to ourselves. Wondering why he had gone to so much trouble to find a quite place, he then asked me to marry him, and of cause I said yes. PHOTOGRAPHY BY LITTLE GLIMPSES FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY North Coast WEDDINGS

country
T
he winter weather couldn’t have been kinder to us as we welcomed more than 30 exhibitors and artisans to a centuryold Church Hall at Upper Orara, outside Coffs Harbour on Sunday July 21. Some 150 couples and their friends and family made the 15 minute country drive to join us in marvelling at the creativity and passion of the stylists, photographers, decorators, florists, musicians, jewellers, dance instructors, caterers, cake decorators and many more. On arrival guests were welcomed by the Showcase team with a show bag of information and giveaways then transported back in time by a beautiful period style carriage from Heritage Carriages. Our four styling themes pictured here were a great hit, showcasing the talents of many exhibitors on the day. It was standing room only when RSVP Bridal and Jade Kohl’s gorgeous gowns graced the stage complimented by beautiful pieces from Parrys Jewellers, hair and make up by Instyle Hair and Beauty Services and Abbeys Hair Studio with bouquets by Fran from Lotus Floral Studios. Special Occasions ceremony themeing was the perfect backdrop for the parade. For those with two left feet, we were given a marvellous exhibition of a bridal waltz ‘with a

twist’ by Phil & Carol from Pacific Dance Studio. Outside in the garden Jenny Whitty’s beautiful piano playing chilled us out while later in the afternoon Christine Monneron and her six piece South American band had us dancing the salsa on the green. Handi-Hire Woolgoolga kept us shaded from the sun in a variety of marquees. Guests enjoyed delicious tastings from Spare Chef complete with frozen cocktails, and catering information from Savouries with a Twist and Macauleys Restaurant. If you were after the complete package then Opal Cove had you covered. For those with a sweet tooth delicious cakes from Sweet Love Cake Couture and La Pasteleria, washed down with excellent coffee from Rustic Bean served from their bright orange mobile Kombi Van. Weddings are when we want to look our best and to help you get into shape there was the Coffs Coast Health Club and Marion from Wedding Belles. The team from La Fleur D’Alyse and Ella Bache can star t your beauty regime well before the day, with makeup and pampering for the entire wedding par ty. The Dental Centre reminded us how impor tant a great smile is as well. Decorating is made easy with Stylicious Events and Tiers for Tea, complimented with beautiful
smoke free candles from Partylite Candles. Many of our exhibitors were new to the Nor th Coast wedding scene – stylist and decorator Kiri Eather from Rosie Rose Events has just star ted up locally. Nicole from Bowerbird and Browne has seen the light and moved from chilly Melbourne to settle here – offering her beautiful floral talents and bejewelled bouquets to the delight of us all. Lauren from Nor th Coast Luxury Weddings was introducing us to the cream of the crop in luxury wedding ceremonies and venues. Photo booth fun was had by all at In a Snap and The Photo Shack with dress up the order of the day, complete with complimentary photos to take home. And to capture your special memories were photographers, Emma Rhoades, Mike & Amy and Lyss and her Camera, each with their own individual style. As brides and grooms know, any event with huge numbers of different people and one chance to get it right ‘onstage’ takes months of planning and coordination. Events like the Nor th Coast Wedding Showcase are the perfect place to gather information, talk to the exper ts and see how your special day can look. See you next year!

THE MEETING We first met each other at the age of 12 at primary school. We were friends throughout school. After a year of travelling after school we then star ted dating. THE PROPOSAL It was a random Wednesday night and James suggested dinner at my favourite restaurant in Brisbane. The restaurant was Japanese we were sitting on the ground. James had planned to ask in the restaurant however had forgotten about the sitting down aspect and didn’t want to be towering over me when he asked! There was a slight detour via the Kangaroo Point cliffs to see if the café was open to “get some coffee”. There in front of the beautiful night view overlooking the city James got down on bended knee! PHOTOGRAPHY BY VAN MIDDLETON North Coast WEDDINGS

Jess & Nathan
THE MEETING Nathan and I had attended the same school since kindergar ten, it wasn’t until the tender age of 13 that we star ted dating and our relationship just blossomed from there. THE PROPOSAL After watching the sunrise from a Hot Air Balloon we landed at O’Reilly’s Winery in the Canungra Valley, Queensland for a champagne breakfast. Little did I know that Nathan had purchased my engagement ring the day before and after convincing me to take a walk along the banks of the picturesque Canungra Creek, Nathan got down on one knee and proposed. Kylie & Tom
THE MEETING Tom and I first met in preschool. Went our separate ways for primary school but then met up again and became close friends in high school. Eventually, in year 10, we kissed one evening and soon after became a couple. We have been together ever since! THE PROPOSAL The day started with a limo (fully equipped with champagne and strawberries etc) to take us on a tour of the local wineries and lunch at a beautiful local restaurant.Tom had the limo drop me off at a local beauty salon for what Tom said was an afternoon of pampering. A note and a hotel key arrived at the salon; I was to meet Tom at a specific room at the Sails resort in half an hour. Upon arrival at the room I followed a trail of rose petals leading out to the waterfront balcony where Tom was waiting on bended knee! PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIC D PHOTOGRAPHY North Coast WEDDINGS

JUST
Hair Stylist Michelle Boskovski from Milans Hairdressing gives you practical tips and advice on how to get your hair wedding day ready. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BOOKING A HAIRDRESSER • Which style usually suits you and will have you feeling most comfortable on the day? If you wear your hair out ordinarily, consider doing the same for your wedding day. The goal is to look like “you” (though a more glamorous version!) on the day. • Are you wearing a veil or other hair accessory? • Which style will look best with your dress?
Hair by Lovely Locks Port Macquarie; Photos: Khym Mountain
• If you are going with a theme, is there a hair style that will best fit this theme? Eg. 1950’s period style needs structured curls with height or a beehive. WHEN CHOOSING A HAIRDRESSER • Look at recommendations from friends and family and look at the hairdresser’s website • Ask what experience have they had in this field of work? – You want a hairdresser that specializes in wedding hair, not in colouring etc. You can usually tell by the experience of weddings by their portfolio. • Ask to see their portfolio and look at their style of work • Ask how many weddings will they do on the day of your wedding? You don’t want a hairdresser rushing from your wedding to the next! • Look for a quick response, this means you won’t have to worry about chasing them!
