The Marka Sami The Marka Sami area stretches from Ballangen in the south to Malangen in the north. They once led a semi-nomadic life with their reindeer, until they ultimately settled down to farm and fish. They did not entirely abandon their reindeer husbandry, and combined it with some arable farming, kept a few livestock, and also fished and hunted.
The Lule Sami The Lule Sami area stretches from Ballangen/Tysfjord in Norway to Jokkmokk and the southern part of Gällivare in Sweden. Lule Sami is one of the three main Sami languages in Norway next to Northern Sami and Southern Sami. The Lule Sami came from the area of Lule river in Sweden. Today there are approximately 2,000 Lule Sami, most of them living in the Tysfjorden area.

Reindeer husbandry Reindeer husbandry today in Norway is a small industry on a national scale, but both in a Sámi and local context, it has great importance. Reindeer husbandry is not only important eco-nomically and in employment terms, it is also one of the most important parts of the Sámi culture. Sami reindeer husbandry in Norway is
divided into districts. In Norway, as of 2006/2007, there are a total of 556 Siida units which have a member total of 2 936 people. Of these, 403 Siida units and 2 200 persons are in Finnmark, making it the most numerically significant region for reindeer husbandry in Norway.
