Helgeland is the southernmost part of Nordland County. The long coast of this region consists of a myriad of magnificent islands, some of which are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The best known peaks are The Seven Sisters on the coast. Inland, mountains rise almost 2000 metres above sea level. The Arctic Circle cuts through our region; when you pass 66 degrees latitude you enter the land of the midnight sun. Welcome!

HELGELAND – GETTING HERE BY CAR

If you’re coming northward on highway E6, you’ll enter the traditional realm of Helgeland approximately 300 km north of Trondheim. There are several alternative routes. One of them is the Wilderness Road (Rv73/Fv806), an inland route that takes you from Majavatn lake in the south to Korgen in the north. Another is the Coastal Highway (Fv17) from Steinkjer to Bodø. If you are travelling from Sweden, you can drive the Sagavegen (Saga Road Rv804/Fv296), Krutfjellvegen (Krutfjell Road Rv73) or Blåvegen (the Blue Road E12). You can reach the magnificent Helgeland coast by way of the Coastal Highway (Fv17), Tosenveien (Fv76), via the town of Mosjøen (Fv78), or via the town of Mo i Rana (E12).

BY TRAIN

The Nordland Railway extends from Trondheim to Bodø. The train journey from Trondheim to Mosjøen takes about five hours, while the trip to Mo i Rana takes six hours. Trains from Bodø take three hours to Mo i Rana, and four hours to Mosjøen. For schedules and reservations, please visit www.nsb.no

National Tourist Route Helgelandskysten, which is connected by six ferries, offers a wealth of contrasts as it passes through a verdant cultural landscape interspersed with craggy peaks, glaciers, sweeping coastlines and swirling ocean currents. Many remarkable natural phenomena are found along this route. In the south you will pass the peaks of the Seven Sisters and the Torghatten mountain with it`s characteristic hole; in the north you can see the Svartisen glacier and the world’s strongest tidal current, the Saltstraumen. The coast of Helgeland is characterised by a unique archipelago of more than 14 000 islands and islets. Long fjords break up the coastline; innermost in the fjords are industrial communities based on hydropower generation.

HELLÅGA:

Make a stop and try your hand as an angler at Hellåga. This scenic rest area on the banks of the Sjona fjord offers plenty of opportunities for recreational activities. A flight of steps takes you safely down to the water’s edge. From the comfort of robust benches you can enjoy the view across the fjord. Hellåga also has a dump station for motorhomes.

Enjoy the panoramic view from Braset towards the Engabreen glacier and the Holandsfjord.

OTHER STOPS along this route include Grønsvik

coastal fort, Kilboghavn, Forøy, Holand, Reppen rest area and Kleivhalsen viewpoint. The National Tourist Route Helgelandskysten (Fv17) between Holm and Godøystraumen is 433 km long, with a scenic detour to Torghatten, a famous mountain beyond Brønnøysund. Several roads connect the tourist route to Euroroute 6, making it easy to alternate between them.

EXPLORING THE ISLANDS BY BICYCLE

In the summer, when the sun barely sinks below the horizon, you can enjoy the sights of Helgeland around the clock, setting your own pace as you explore on two wheels. The light is magical, and you may stop exactly where you wish to savour the beautiful scenery. The warm glow of the midnight sky and the deep silence cannot be described, only experienced!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

ROUTE 1: BRØNNØYSUND-YLVINGEN-VEGA 3 days. Total distance: 70–80 km

Day 3: Vega–Brønnøysund Visit the Eider Duck Museum (E-huset) at Nes and the Exhibitions on the UNESCO World Heritage Area. Consider heading for Vega Havhotell for a great meal (reservations recommended), or rent a kayak and explore the archipelago. With 100 kilometres of very lightly trafficked roads, Vega is a cycling paradise! Explore the landscape and find a relaxing beach. Late in the afternoon, you can take the express boat from Rørøy to Brønnøysund. Accommodation: Please see listing for Brønnøysund at page 31.

ROUTE 2: DØNNA–HERØY–SANDNESSJØEN 3 days. Total distance: ca 120 km

Day 1: Brønnøysund–Torghatten (about 30 km, round trip). Head across the Brønnøysund Bridge and set a course for Torghatten. A 30-minute walk takes you up to the famous hole through the mountain. Sturdy footwear recommended. Have a culinary meal at Torghatten Camping & StrandRestaurant (reservation in advance) and The Norwegian Aquaculture Centre at Toft is also worth a visit. Accommodation: Torghatten Camping & StrandRestaurant, alternatively a hotel or motel in Brønnøysund (see p. 31). Day 2: Brønnøysund–Ylvingen–Vega (30–45 km, depending on where you start) Ride from Brønnøysund to Horn along coastal road Fv17 (14 km), then take the ferry to Ylvingen, the island of “Skyblue”. Consider a stop at Hildurs Urterarium, the only food, wine and herb farm in northern Norway. Explore the idyllic island of Ylvingen before continuing to Vega on the afternoon express boat. From the quay in Rørøy, ride 8 km to Nes, the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Accommodation: Nes Bryggeferie or Vega Opplevelsesferie

This excursion offers scenic country roads, white sand beaches, great bird-watching, beautiful churches, changing views of the Seven Sisters peaks – and so much more. Day 1: Sandnessjøen–Dønna–Herøy (ca 30–35 km) Take the morning ferry from Sandnessjøen to Dønna. After a 26 km bicycle ride, you can visit Dønnes Farm and Dønnes church, and hike to the top of Dønnesfjellet for a magnificent panorama. When you’re ready to continue, cross the Åkviksund Bridge to Seløy, a distance of 22 km. Accommodation: Augustbryggo or Seløy kystferie Day 2: Herøy–Sandnessjøen (14–15 km) Go sea-rafting on the open seas, join a photo safari or enjoy deep-sea fishing. (Contact Seløy Kystferie for reservations.) Then head for Flostad ferry quay on Seløy, about 14 km away. Today’s excursion takes you along sheltered coves and sandy beaches, with ocean panoramas and views of the Seven Sisters. Be sure to visit Herøy church, often referred to as the Helgeland Cathedral, as well as Herøy rural museum – before taking the ferry to Tourist office, +47 75 01 80 00

ROUTE 3: FROM HAIRPIN BENDS TO THE OUTERMOST ISLANDS 6 days. Total distance: 160 km (distances are approximate)

This bicycle journey through Northern Helgeland features mountain passes with hairpin bends, caves, sandy white beaches and the midnight sun. Day 1: Mo i Rana – Melfjordbotn (40 km) Cycle along Highway E6 from Mo i Rana and take the turnoff toward Melfjordbotn. The ride across the Melfjellet mountains and down to the fjord hamlet, is Helgeland’s equivalent of Trollstigen (the Troll Ladder) in Romsdal. Along the way, consider a two-hour detour to one of the fascinating caves Grønligrotta, Setergrotta or Marmorslottet. Accommodation: Tent. Day 2: Melfjordbotn – Rødøy: (25 km + boat) The express boat down the fjord to Kilboghamn is a fantastic one-hour journey. From the quay in Kilboghamn you cycle 21 km to Tonnes, and take another express boat to Rødøy, passing the Arctic Circle monument on Vikingen island. Accommodation: Klokkergården at Rødøy. Day 3: Rødøy – Aldersund: (21 km) Rise to the challenge! Climb to the peak of Rødøyløva or rent a kayak and explore the beautiful islands and islets before returning to Tonnes in the afternoon. The express boat takes you to Aldersund. Accommodation: Aldersund Brygger, or Aldersund Motel & Camping.

Søvik on Alstahaug. From the ferry quay, a 5 km ride along Fv17 takes you to Tjøtta. Accommodation: Offersøy Camping Day 3: Alstahaug–Sandnessjøen (30–35 km) Double back along coast road Fv17, park your bicycle at the foot of the Seven Sisters, and take the trail toward Vettfjellet on foot. The round-trip walk should take you about 2.5 hours. Afterwards, continue towards Sandnessjøen, stopping at the Petter Dass Museum; the striking building was designed by the Snøhetta architect firm. The 13th-century Alstahaug church is also worth a visit. Just one kilometre before you reach Sandnessjøen lies Sandnes, where the local Viking chieftain lived. The town of Sandnessjøen offers art and cultural experiences, good dining and shopping. 12

Day 4: Aldersund – Træna (5 km + boat) Enjoy the bicycle ride from Aldersund to Stokkvågen, before taking the express boat to Træna, the oldest fishing village in Norway. Visit the island of Sanna and the cave Kirkhelleren. From Mount Gompen, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Helgeland coast. Accommodation: Træna Gjestegård or Træna Rorbuferie. Day 5: Træna – Flostrand (20 km + boat) Explore Træna on two wheels. Be sure to include a visit to Petter Dass Chapel on Husøy, where Northern Norway’s most famous poet used to preach in the 18th century. After returning to Stokkvågen in the afternoon, continue riding to Flostrand, in the direction of Mo i Rana. Accommodation: Tent. Day 6: Flostrand – Mo i Rana ( ca 60 km) The final leg of our journey takes us to the town of Mo i Rana. Attractions include the old quarter and marina of Moholmen, and the rest of the town offers concerts, pubs and shopping opportunities. Accommodation: Many options, see page 65-66.

ROUTE 3: MOUNT TORGHATTEN NEAR BRØNNØYSUND

While those who are looking for an extreme challenge may aspire to ascend each of the Seven Sisters on the same day, most people are content to climb one or two of the summits at a time. There is waymarking up to each top, as well as between them.

The renowned Mount Torghatten, pierced all the way through by a distinctive hole, has to be seen to be believed! You might feel very small, indeed, as you walk through the 160-metre long, 15–20 metre wide and 35 metre tall hole – and you may marvel at the powerful forces of nature that dug this tunnel. Follow the signs from Brønnøysund for 12 km to the trail’s starting point. There is also a worthwhile trail that circles Torghatten.

To reach Botnkrona (1072 m) and Grytfoten (1019 m), drive 4 km southbound along highway Fv17 from Sandnessjøen, take the turnoff at Nymoen and continue another 4 km to the parking lot. An additional one-kilometre walk along the same road takes you to the head of the trail to Skjæringen (1037 m) and Tvillingene (The Twins: 945 and 980 m). If you wish to climb Kvasstinden (1010 m) or Breitinden (910 m), drive highway Fv17 southbound for 18 km to Søvikskaret, where there is parking. A map showing all the trails to the Seven Sisters is available at the Sandnessjøen Tourist Information Office. Accommodation: Offersøy Camping, about 33 km south of Sandnessjøen. ROUTE 2: GULLSVÅGFJELLET ON VEGA The summit of Gullsvågfjellet (725 m) offers a stunning 360-degree panorama. There are two popular trails up the mountain. The easier and longer hike starts from the road at Gullsvåg. The shorter hike, the first half of which climbs very steeply, starts near the cable car – which of course is the effortless way to reach the top. ROUTE 4: RØDØYLØVA The island of Rødøy, in the northern part of the Helgeland coast, has a famous rock formation that resembles a lion. The top of Rødøyløva (443 m) offers an incredible view that spans from the jagged Lofoten Islands to the north, to the Vega archipelago to the south. Start your hike to the summit from the ferry quay at Smiholmen or from Klokkergården and follow the good path. ROUTE 5: FROM TESPDALEN TO SALTFJELLSTUA CABIN Tespdalen is a beautiful valley in Saltfjellet-Svartisen, which is one of Norway’s most varied National Parks. Your starting point is Storvoll School, about 27 km north of Storforshei. Cross the bridge over the Ranelva river, then turn left, following the trail up the valley along the eastern side of the Tespa river, until you reach Tespvatnet lake. The trail continues

over the Lappflytterskardet pass and then down the hillside to Krukkistua cabin. If you wish, you can follow the marked trail northwards, past Steinstua cabin to Saltfjellstua, a cabin situated at 610 m. The cabins are operated by Rana Turistforening.

ROUTE 7: FROM VARNTRESK TO FAMNVASSDALEN

ROUTE 6: OKSTINDAN AND RABOTHYTTA CABIN DNT cabin no. 500, Rabothytta, is dramatically situated at 1200 metres on the very edge of the Okstindbreen glacier, in the Okstindan mountain range. Short hike (1.5–2 hours): From highway E6, take the exit toward Korgen and drive 15 km into the valley of Leirskardalen, continuing 5 km on the steep and narrow gravel road. From the parking lot (650 m) follow the 5 km marked trail past Steinbua to Rabothytta. The terrain is somewhat demanding. Longer hike (3–4 hours): Follow highway E12, exit at Umbukta and drive to Umskaret, following the gravel road for 40 km until you reach Kjensvasshytta cabin. Continue on foot, following the marked trail for 10 km. NB Use caution when crossing the glacial river (there is no bridge)! Kjensvasshytta is 18

This hike starts at Sæterstad Farm in Varntresk, about 40 km from Hattfjelldal village. After 3 km the trail reaches Langtjønn lake, continues to the larger Storoksvatnet, and through gentle terrain along several small lakes that offer good fishing. Then the hike follows Famnneset ridge – consider a detour to the viewpoint (elevation 600 m). The main trail descends to Kråkdalstjønna lake, continuing along Famnvatnet lake. Alternatively, you can follow the road for 2 km to Sivertgården Farm in Famnvassdalen.

This route heads in a southwesterly direction, passing between Akersvatnet lake and Øver-Uman, to Austre Kjensvatn lake and Kjensvasshytta cabin. Your hike continues eastward, to the north of Okstindan, to Gressvasshytta cabin. Then follow the hillside to the east of Spjeltfjelldalen Nature Reservation. Stekvasselv Farm, situated 2 km west of Granheim, offers accommodation and meals (with prior reservations). From Nord-Røssvatn lake, the trail passes across Tjetterskardet, descending to the municipal road 2 km east of Sivertgården Farm, which offers accommodation in a cabin and a logbuilt house.

THE LEGEND OF HOW THE HELGELAND MOUNTAINS CAME TO BE According to an often-told legend, the hole through Torhatten was made by an arrow from the Horseman. “One evening the Horseman witnessed The Seven Sisters and the Maiden of Leka bathing in the sea near the island of Landego. Filled with passion for the Maiden of Leka, he decided to steal her away at midnight. In full armour and with a cape over his shoulders he galloped south. When the maidens saw him coming they fled, until exhausted they threw themselves to the ground near Alstahaug. The Maiden of Leka continued southward, as the King of Sømnafjellene stood and watched her lonely, frenzied flight. As golden clouds signalled approaching dawn, the King saw the thwarted suitor lay an arrow on his bow. The moment the arrow left the bow-string, the King cast his hat into the air, saving the Maiden’s life. The King’s hat fell at Torgar, and with the sun’s first rays all were turned to stone.”

THE NATIONAL PARKS OF HELGELAND The Helgeland region has three national parks: Saltfjellet–Svartisen, Lomsdal–Visten and Børgefjell.

SALTFJELLET-SVARTISEN NATIONAL PARK

The pristine wilderness and varied landscapes of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park offer a paradise for the eager adventurer. Svartisen, the second largest glacier on mainland Norway, covers a fifth of the national park. On your hikes, you may discover some of the many Sámi cultural monuments. The national park has an extensive network of marked trails, including one that follows the old telegraph line between Rana and Saltdal. Along the trails are a number unmanned cabins and self-service mountain huts. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities for trout and char in the mountain lakes of Saltfjellet. In addition, there are four major salmon rivers originating in the national park, including Ranaelva river. The eastern areas offer small game hunting, including plentiful ptarmigan; moose hunters will head for the heart of the national park. The westernmost areas of Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park are dominated by high mountains, deep fjords and glaciers. LOMSDAL–VISTEN NATIONAL PARK

Lomsdal-Visten National Park is an incredibly varied wilderness, ranging from fjords to vast forests and towering mountains. While there are some trails at the outskirts of the national park, you will have to find your own way in the high-mountain terrain. There are some mountain huts, but in most areas you will need your own tent. The national park covers parts of four municipalities: Vefsn, Grane, Brønnøy and Vevelstad. Map and compass are an absolute must in LomsdalVisten National Park. Also bear in mind that much of the bedrock is gneiss, which absorbs very little water, and that the water flow in the streams and rivers may vary greatly. During heavy rains and the snow-melt, the rivers may become dangerously high. BØRGEFJELL NATIONAL PARK

Børgefjell National Park is a magnificent mountain wilderness, covering 1447 km2. The west is dominated by tall mountains, deep valleys and numerous lakes. In the shadowy lower reaches, you may encounter patches of snow and ice that never melt. The dramatic southern areas have raging rivers and waterfalls, whereas the gently eastern tracts are dominated by rounded mountains and heathlands. The highest mountain is Kvigtind, 1699 m. You need several days if you really wish to experience the grandeur and tranquillity of Børgefjell National Park. Bear in mind that you may need a full day to reach the park’s interior, and another to get back. Be sure to bring warm clothes and raingear, and proper equipment to face changeable weather conditions. Børgefjell National Park is best suited for experienced outdoorsmen. Although much of the terrain is easily accessible, especially the valleys, you will not find the huts or lodges, marked trails or bridges you may be accustomed to in less remote national parks. Experience and a good map and compass are absolutely crucial! Three traditional gateways to Børgefjell National Park are: from Tomasvatnet lake near Majavatn (about 2 km from highway E6), from Simskardet in the valley of Fiplingdal, and From Harvassdalen in Susendal near Øyum, Oksvollen or Storvollen. Maps of the national park may be purchased at the Tourist Information Office in Mosjøen.

IMPORTANT RULES IN ALL NORWEGIAN NATIONAL PARKS • Stop wherever you want, and camp for the night if you wish. But tidy up afterwards and take your rubbish home. • Feel free to go wherever you want, on foot or on skis. Anything with an engine is basically banned. • You may light a fire, but remember the general ban on fires in woodland between 15 April and 15 September. Show consideration when you gather firewood. Never leave a burning campfire. • You may pick berries, mushrooms and common plants for your own use. • Show consideration for cultural heritage sites, vegetation and animal life. • Fishing and hunting are allowed, provided it’s in season and you have a fishing or hunting licence. 1. LOVUND The waters around Lovund are ideal for experienced kayakers. While much of the area is sheltered, there are plenty of opportunities for tougher adventures. During your stay, we also recommend a hike up Lovundfjellet, which offers an incredible panorama of the Helgeland coast from its summit. Suggested stay on Lovund: 2–3 days.

Description: Express boat from Sandnessjøen, Nesna or Stokkvågen. Launch your kayak and explore the waters north of Lovund, which are mostly sheltered. Should you yearn for adventure, you can challenge the larges swells of the open sea, and perhaps paddle around the entire island.

2. OFFERSØY AND TJØTTA

The area is sheltered and easy to access. Situated along the Coastal Highway (FV17), these places are ideal starting points for longer kayak expeditions along the Helgeland coast. Description: Park by the bridge that connects Offersøy and Tjøtta, where you can easily launch your kayak. The eastern shore is usually sheltered, and you may enjoy excursions over to Rødøya or Bærøya, or explore the Vefsnfjord. If you stay to the left

of the bridge, you pass the fjord and can head toward Hestøy og Blomsøy; there you will find many large and small islands, and waters that are great for beginners.

3. VEGA

The Nesna Islands, Sleneset, Tomma, Lurøy and Rødøy are also excellent for kayaking. And in the interior of Helgeland, you can enjoy great rafting on the Susna, Eiteråga, Fiplingsdalselva and other rivers.

The Vega archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Area situated in the southern reaches of Helgeland, offers many kayaking adventures. You can even head for the same destination one day after the other, by a new route. Should you yearn for a more challenging adventure, the open sea is never far away. Description Igerøy – Søla – Nes: Take the ferry from Horn near Brønnøysund to Igerøy on Vega. You can park your car on the quay and launch your kayak there. Follow the shore through the narrow sounds, enjoying the dramatic surroundings. After a few hours you’ll reach Søla, an uninhabited island 12 nautical miles west of Vega, which is part of the Hysvær/Søla Nature Reserve. Be extra careful if you light a fire. Continue your kayaking toward Nes on Vega; although most of this six-hour journey is in sheltered waters, you must be prepared for stretches of open sea, which can be challenging. Accommodation in a charming rorbu (book in advance), or pitch a tent. Allow plenty of time for the return journey to Igerøy,

Helgeland is probably best known for its sea fishing, but inland are rivers and lakes that will impress even the most spoiled angler. Try your luck in secluded rivers, or in lakes where the only sound to be heard is the wind gently rustling the trees. And don’t be astonished when your dream of the big one comes true – for we have large fish aplenty!

SEA FISHING

With its deep fjords, magnificent island-dotted coastline, and offshore fishing banks, Helgeland is a paradise for any eager fisherman. Amongst the excellent fishing spots are currents, shallows, and the deeper parts of the sea. There are excellent fishing spots on the Finneidfjord, Vistenfjord and other fjords of Helgeland, where you can fish for cod, pollock and sea trout year round, while mackerel, wolfish, redfish and haddock are more seasonal.

FRESHWATER FISHING

The lakes and rivers of Helgeland offer many excellent angling opportunities – from Børgefjell National Park in the south to Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park in the northernmost part of our region. There are large lakes, hidden lakes and mountain lakes far above the treeline, and you’re sure to enjoy the trout and mountain char prepared over the campfire. Vefsn, Grane and Hattfjelldal alone have at least 2000 lakes within an hour’s walk from the road. Plathe’s Properties in Bindal is known for its large trout. Further north there is excellent fishing in lakes along Highway E12 near the Swedish border. On Tverrvatnet and Raudvatnet lakes, you may borrow a boat free-of-charge from Statskog – and beyond Raudvatnet there are additional lakes with excellent fishing. Umskartjønna is accessible for anglers in wheelchairs. Following Highway E6 northbound, you will discover a wealth of fishing opportunities, including Blereken, as well as the areas from Reinforsen and up toward Saltfjellet.

SALMON AND TROUT

Since time immemorial, the people of Helgeland have eaten a great variety of fish, shellfish and marine mammals. THE ARCTIC CIRCLE

To pass the Arctic Circle – 66 degrees latitude – is to enter Arctic Norway and the land of the midnight sun. Driving northward on Highway E6, you cross the Arctic Circle on Saltfjellet. If you travel by sea, a globe on the island of Vikingen marks your passage into this magical realm.

VEGA WORLD HERITAGE AREA

Vegaøyan was awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004 for the islanders’ unique and ancient tradition as guardians of the migrating eider ducks that nest here. After a new generation of young birds leave, the islanders collect the eider down, which is used to make the world’s best down duvets.

SVARTISEN GLACIER

Svartisen is the second-largest glacier on mainland Norway, and 60 glacier tongues extend into the surrounding valleys. One of the most visited is

Austerdalsisen. Join an excursion that takes you by boat across Svartisvatnet lake, or take the shuttle boat across the Holandsfjord. Both boat rides are followed by a 3 km hike up to the glacier’s edge.

LAKSFORSEN FALLS

Laksforsen falls is one of the most popular natural attractions in Nordland County. Every second, 700 m3 of water plummets down the 17-metre-high waterfall.

REMARKABLE CAVES

Just north of the town Mo i Rana, you will find the amazing caves Grønligrotta and Setergrotta. The former is Scandinavia’s most renowned limestone cave and is beautifully illuminated. In Setergrotta, narrow passages lead to enormous mountain halls, white marble and strange limestone formations.

LOVUND – REALM OF THE PUFFIN

Far out at sea lies the island of Lovund, nesting site for Norway’s largest puffin colony. The sight of the puffins returning in the evening is unforgettable.

DØNNAMANNEN

Mount Dønnamannen (858 m) seems almost human, with its unmistakeable profile of an upward turned face. Well-marked trails lead you up to the summit.

THE MOOSE – KING OF THE FOREST

Alstahaug and Leirfjord have some of the largest moose populations in Norway. At dusk and dawn, there’s an excellent chance for visitors to sight one of these huge, majestic animals.

- The gateway to Helgeland

Bindal, the southernmost municipality in Helgeland, is beautifully situated on the coast — but you are never far away from the mountains and forest wilderness. Terråk and Bindalseidet are the main population centres. Bindal offers cultural heritage trails to grave mounds and monuments dating back to the Viking Age and earlier. The cruciform Vassås church, built in 1733, is well worth a visit. So is a walk up Heilhornet (1058) – and there are lots of other exciting hiking destinations. For relaxed exploration, join an excursion on the express boat MS Ørtind, stopping at villages along the fjords and on the islands.

– Norway´s geographical centre Sømna is known as the granary of northern Norway. Archaeological finds reveal the history of this fertile region from the early Iron Age and later periods. This fascinating art project comprises 34 sculptures by 34 artists, each of which is displayed in a different municipality, including eleven municipalities in Helgeland. Artists from all over the world were invited to create these sculptures, which have been permanently installed at selected locations throughout the beautiful and varied landscape of Nordland County. “HAIKU BATHTUB”, SØMNA

This sculpture by Irish artist Dorothy Cross consists of three parts, each of which is imbued with many associations. It is placed in Vennesund.

“STEINAR THE MONKFISH”, BRØNNØYSUND The Franco-Swedish sculptor Erik Dietman created this landscape installation of a 70-metre long stone fish. It is situated in the sound near Brønnøysund town centre.

“A NEW CONVERSATION”, VEGA

This three-part sculpture by Finnish artist Kain Tapper stands in Grimsøysundet, a sound northwest of the island Grimsøy, near the Igerøy ferry quay.

This sculpture by Norwegian artist Oddvar I.N. consists of a polished circle almost ten metres in diameter, ground into the mountainside just above the highway on Høyholm.

This sculpture by Brazilian artist Waltercio Caldas contemplates the distances between our houses – balancing our need for privacy with our desire for social contact. It stands 10 km from the Highway Fv17 intersection, towards Fagervika.

This five-metre-high sculpture by Norwegian artist Sissel Tolaas incorporates twelve propellers and is executed in reinforced concrete. It is situated near Helgeland Bridge, just outside Sandnessjøen town centre.

“WHILE YOU WEIGHT 1976–2009”, DØNNA This horizontal sculpture by Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles consists of a large circle, situated at Snekkevik, a cove about 26 km north of the Bjørn ferry quay.

“THE INNER FOLLOWS THE OUTER”, RØDØY This steel sculpture by Norwegian artist Per Inge Bjørlo is situated by Storsanden on Rødøy, at the foot of the mountain called Rødøyløva (the Red Island Lion).

This sculpture by Icelandic artist Hreinn Fridfinnsson, in the heart of the village, is made of aluminium, granite and crystal.

“THREE FLAMES”, MOSJØEN

This artwork by Icelandic artist Hulda Hàkon conjures three fires, with flames made of painted stainless steel. The sculpture is situated in the River Park, just outside the town centre.

“THE OCEAN MAN”, MO I RANA

English sculptor Anthony Gromley’s ten-metrehigh granite figure watches over the town from its post in the Ransfjord. It is also visible to approaching boats and ship traffic. – A World Heritage treasure

The wild, beautiful and friendly World Heritage Area of Vegaøyan is an archipelago that counts roughly 6500 islands, islets and skerries. VEVELSTAD – Small but lively

On the coast, Vevelstad has many cultural monuments; the first residents arrived in the Stone Age. The magnificent wilderness is a source of pride – half the municipality lies in Lomsdal-Visten National Park. Vevelstad is a 45-minute journey from the regional centre Brønnøysund. SANDNESSJØEN – Gateway to the Helgeland coast

Sandnessjøen is situated in the Municipality of Alstahaug, a municipality that has a long and colourful history. Chieftain Hårek of Tjøtta, Øyvind the Bard, Sigrid of Sandnes and the poet Petter Dass all hail from Alstahaug. Sandnessjøen became a transportation hub for the entire region in 1899, when a steamer company set up offices here. Today there are direct flights to Oslo, daily calls by the Hurtigruten coastal steamer, scheduled buses, and ferries and express boats to many destinations.

The municipality is renowned for its large moose population – out in the countryside you may well sight one of these huge mammals at dusk. Dønna has a proud history, dramatic scenery and a rich fauna. The lush island of Løkta, northeast of the main island Dønna, is perfect for exploring on two wheels, and it has fine beaches. Dønna has ferry services to Sandnessjøen, and a bridge connects it to Herøy. Be sure to visit Valhaugen, one of the largest burial mounds in northern Norway. It is topped by a marble phallus, a fertility symbol from the Migration Period (400–600 CE). LURØY The municipality of Lurøy, situated just south of the Arctic Circle, counts 1372 islands and islets. The National Tourist Route Helgelandskysten winds along the coast of the mainland. A large globe on the tiny island of Vikingen, just north of Tonnes, indicates to vessels that they are passing the Arctic Circle. There are ferry and express boat services from Stokkvågen to the islands of Lurøy, as well as daily express boat services between Lurøy and the towns of Sandnessjøen and Bodø. HATTFJELLDAL – The highlander realm

This municipality, one of Norway’s largest, owes its name to the distinctive mountaintop Hatten (the Hat). Hattfjelldal has a significant Sámi population, and the handicrafts of the indigenous people are treasured. The southern Sámi also have interesting traditional dances. In the beautiful Municipality of Hemnes, you’re never far from the fjord. Be sure to visit the DNT cabin Rabothytta, which is dramatically situated at 1200 metres, on the very edge of the Okstindbreen glacier. The cabin enjoys a stunning view of the glacier, as well as the Okstindan mountain range and its ruling summit Oksskolten (1916 m), the highest mountain in Northern Norway.

Avid anglers may try to catch a salmon in the Røssåga river. The village of Hemnesberget, a favourite amongst artists and boaters, hosts the annual HemnesJazz, and the Boat and Fjord Festival. There’s even a festival devoted to the local pastry, kamkaka, and in 2015 the Norwegian historical play Klemetspelet will be performed at Leirskardalen. – the Arctic Circle Centre The Arctic Circle, at 66°33’ N, is the invisible border to the Arctic, the Land of the Midnight Sun, which you enter as you drive highway E6 over the Saltfjellet mountain plateau, about halfway between the towns of Fauske and Mo i Rana. The Arctic Circle Centre is a natural place to stop and rest for all travellers.

AMFI Mo i Rana is the largest shopping centre in Helgeland, offering more than 50 shops, cafés and restaurants. Kids will enjoy the 250 m2 indoor play centre. Situated in the heart of Mo i Rana. Open weekdays until 7pm, Saturdays until 4pm.

Visitors who come in their own boats are requested to take particular care during the breeding season, from 15 April to 31 July, and to maintain a low speed near land and between the islands. It is strictly forbidden to damage nesting grounds or to interfere in any way with animals and birds. During the breeding season, dog owners are prohibited from bringing dogs anywhere near the nesting areas. Between 1 April and 1 October, all dogs must be kept on a leash.

Visitors can enjoy guided boat tours to the old nesting areas and fishing villages in the World Heritage area, giving them a unique cultural experience and a keen appreciation of Vegaøyan’s natural beauty. Vega offers great bicycling and kayaking adventures, as well as hiking trails into the mountains and along the shoreline. We recommend a visit to Nes old fishing port, with its E-huset Museum, café, World Heritage Exhibition and Little Lånan. Also worthwhile is a trip to Ylvingen, an idyllic island with sheltered inlets, bikefriendly roads, and panoramic views from the World War II fortification, Tyskerhåjen. Vegaøyan was awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004 for the archipelago’s outstanding natural and cultural environment. Through more than a thousand years, the people of these islands have built nests for eider ducks and protected the birds. When the ducklings leave the nests, the soft eider down is collected and used to make the best duvets in the world. The people of Vegaøyan still continue this ancient tradition.
