FLY SAS and Norwegian both have direct flights from Oslo to Alta and Kirkenes in Finnmark, often at very reasonable rates. They run every day and most days more than once, often with a short stop in Tromsø. From Tromsø there are multiple flights to Alta and Kirkenes every day.

Within Northern Norway Widerøe is a good alternative, especially for shorter flights, since they can land in all the smaller airports in the region. DRIVE A good way to see Finnmark is by driving around and most of our packages work very well for fly and drive. BOAT Hurtigruten is regarded as one of the most beautiful coastal voyages in the world and operate from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north. SIGHTSEEING TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER AND THE MINING TOWN BJØRNEVATN A guided trip by bus to the Russian border and the iron ore mines in Bjørnevatn. Our first stop is “Skafferhullet”, the historical crossing point on the border between Norway and Russia. We visit the border and have views of the Russian community of Boris Gleb on the other side. Your guide will provide information on the various historical events which took place in this area. We continue to the mining town Bjørnevatn which has gone through

QUAD SAFARI (ATV) TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER After we have picked you up and introduced you to our safety instructions, we will start to the viewpoint Kjerringstupet, where you will learn more about the history and culture of this region. We also stop our quads at the iron ore mines at Sydvaranger before we finally reach the Russian border at Skafferhullet, a former border crossing point. Here we can observe a Russian dwelling and a Russian chapel. At todays border crossing point we will stop for coffee and return to Kirkenes via Prestfjellet, another viewing point over Kirkenes and the harbor. Driving license is required, transport and clothing provided.

QUAD (ATV) MIDNIGHT SUN SAFARI TO THE BARENTS SEA After we have picked you up and introduced you to our safety instructions, we will first start to Storskog, the official border crossing point between Norway and Russia. During the trip you will learn more about the history and culture of this region Then we will pass a wild and fascinating mountain scenery, drive along the small border river and finally reach the Barents sea. Here is a former settlement called Grense Jakobselv with the King Oscar II’s stone chapel. We will enjoy a coffee break here before heading back to Kirkenes. Driving license is required, transport and clothing provided.

HOLMEN HUSKY

Holmen Husky invites you to join them on an exciting husky safari! You can drive your own dog team or just relax and enjoy the passing scenery! Eirik has been involved with dog sledding for 25 years, and has taken part in Europe’s longest sled dog race 13 times. We explain how we train our dogs and prepare both ourselves and our dogs for such a trial of strength. We offer trips into the pine forest along the Alta River or up the Alta valley to the Finnmarksvidda mountain plain. Coffee and lunch served in our traditional lavvu. Welcome to a husky adventure! VISIT HOLMEN HUSKY KENNEL Visit our husky dog kennel just outside Alta centre for a guided tour around the kennel. The kennel consists of app. 70 Alaskan huskies that are used for both tourist tours and competitions. Eirik, the owner, has been dog sledding for 25 years and has participated in Finnmarksløpet 14 times, last time in 2012. Finnmarksløpet is the longest dog sled race in Europe, covering 1000 km and takes 5-6 days. After the tour you get coffee and biscuits in the lavvu (sami tent) around the bonfire and stories about racing and keeping huskies. If the conditions are good you can add a taste of dog sledding with wagon while there.

DOG SLEDDING IN THE LAND OF THE ELK In the summer it is possible to try dog sledding with a wagon. Drive yourself one way and relax in the wagon the other. We take you through the pine forest and along the Alta river. Afterwards there is coffee, cake and stories served in our lavvu (sami tent) by the campfire. Here you will learn we train our huskies, stories from the Finnmark race and other interesting facts about these amazing animals. Upon request this tour can be done in the evening under the Midnight sun! Please note: if the temperature is over app +15 degrees the tour has to be cancelled because it is too warm for the dogs to run.

NORTHERN LIGHTS HUSKY

Welcome to a personal, safe and unique summer husky adventure. Catch a glimpse of a day in the life of a dog racer, and visit our open kennels. We train our dogs for the longest sled dog race in Europe, Finnmarksløpet sled dog race 1000 km, and we also completed the Iditarod in Alaska, the world’s longest sled dog race. WE WELCOME YOU TO A KENNEL TOUR Here you will meet the true athletes of long distant sled dog racers, and the drivers. You will be able to walk in the dogyard, pet the dogs and cuddle with our puppies. We will demonstrate and show you the gear we use in training and for racing. The sled, harnesses, arctic clothing and other equipment. It is a lot of stories to be told from the trail, you will hear some of them. Either from Roger Dahl, he has completed the Finnmark race 24 time, and he is a 3 time champion or Trine K. Lyrek the owner of Northern Lights Husky that was no 4. In the Finnmark race 2012, and have been running dogs for 20 years. At the end of the tour we will start to feed our dogs, and you are welcome to watch. HUSKY SUMMER RIDE We have dogcarts on wheels. You go two people together on one cart. One is standing and steering and one is riding. You will be harnessing your own dogs, and we drive on a nice trail by the Alta river. After the trip we will make a campfire and tell you stories about races and our lifestyle with the dogs, together with something to drink and a piece of cake. THE ALTA RIVER BY CANOE Alta river is famous both for its history and salmon and now you have the chance to experience it by canoe. There are two options, half-day or full-day. Both tours starts at Bollo and ends in Alta Fjord (full day) or at the camping grounds in Øvre Alta (half day). It is also possible to start the full day trip from the dam in Sautso upon request. On the trip you will pass through the Alta Canyon, northern Europe’s largest canyon. You will have the chance to spot wildlife as you gently flow through forests and open areas. The trip down the river is also a culinary experience. We serve good local food grilled on an open fire on the riverbank. All necessary training will be provided and the guides have years of experience and local knowledge.

Sorrisniva offers exciting adventures all year round. In spring, summer and autumn they can give you a taste of the river life with riverboat rides up the famous Alta River. Experience the Finnmark nature and canyon from one of the traditional long and narrow riverboats. Also fishing trips on the Finnmark Plateau and staying in traditional sami tents (lavvus) can be arranged for smaller and larger groups. At the idyllic base next to the Alta River they have their renowned restaurant Laksestua where they serve local, short travelled food. RIVERBOAT RIDE ON THE ALTA RIVER We are situated right on the banks of Norway’s best, and indeed world-famous, salmon-river. In the period late May to late August (depending on the depth of water in the river), we can offer excursions on the river in traditional river-boats, whose experienced skippers guarantee you a safe and comfortable ride though rapids and cataracts. Almost 20 km upriver, in the wildest and most beautiful part, we stop below the Gabofossen falls. From here, we gaze into the biggest canyon of Northern Europe.

HIKING TO SAUTSO AND ALTA CANYON Join one of our experienced guides for a walk to the larges canyon in Northern Europe, Sautso. From Gargia Mountain Lodge you start on the hike towards the edge of the canyon and back, a total of 4 hours. It starts steep, but on the tundra it will get flat and you will be able to see the vast landscape of the Finnmark Plateu. At the top and edge of the canyon you have a fantastic view and you can see the Alta River at the bottom. During the tour the guide will tell stories about the people, nature and animals of our region, and on the edge you will be served coffee and snacks. ALTA MUSEUM

The rock art in Alta is Norway’s only prehistoric cultural memorial on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the snow-free season you can see the 7000 – 2000 year old rock carvings around the Alta museum from designated walkways. Either with a guide or on your own. In addition to the carvings you can also visit the museum where you can learn more about the exiting prehistory of the north and the history of Alta. Advanced booking is needed for guided tours. NATURE AND CULTURE WALK TO THE HOLY MT HALDE In the old Sámi religion, everything and everyone had a soul or a guardian spirit. A Halde. On this nature and culture walk our goal is one of many holy places in old Sámi religion and culture. You will see the place where people would come to sacrifice objects and hear stories and learn about Sámi culture and tradition now and before. On the way to Mt. Halde you will also learn about fauna and flora of the arctic Europe and how climate change are already influencing the lives of the people living in the north. The trip is about 3,5 kilometers and has an altitude difference of ≈190 meters.

SUMMER HUSKY CAMP In summer you have the opportunity to experience the sled dogs from Engholm Husky when they have their summer holiday. We bring the dogs to an island in the middle of a lake, app 20 minutes’ drive from Karasjok. Paddle with canoes to the “dog island” where you will meet these happy and very social dogs at their holiday camp. Paddle along with them when they are exercised by swimming or maybe you would even like to swim with them. Included is also a memorable wilderness meal around the camp fire or in the traditional Sámi tent (lavvu). Can be extended to an overnight stay.
