Winter is the new summer, and Vesterålen is an ideal place to observe the Northern Light. Located right within the Aurora oval, leading research into the phenomenon happens here. There are also varied winter activities on offer in Vesterålen. At the same time, Vesterålen is also experiencing a growth in tourism during the summer season. Nature-based activities are much sought after with whale safaris being most popular. The Arctic Race of Norway came to Vesterålen in 2013 and was a great success. Cycle tourism in the region is growing exponentially, and Vesterålen has become an attractive cycle destination. Early May to late August in Vesterålen is paradise for birdwatchers. Eagles can be seen all over the region throughout the year. Vesterålen consists of many islands that are ideal for boating, kayaking and diving. Vesterålen is also famous for spectacular hikes, including Dronningruta (The Queen’s Route) between Stø and Nyksund and the trip to Møysalen, the highest mountain in the region. SAS/Widerøe offer several flights daily from Bodø and Tromsø to the local airports at Andenes and Stokmarknes with connecting routes from cities including Oslo. The airport at Evenes is situated a couple of hours away and the Airport Express Bus makes it easy to travel in to the region. Norwegian and SAS offer cheap fares year-round. All the airports have several companies offering car hire. Climate

CLIMATE:

Typical for areas with a coastal climate, Vesterålen has relatively mild winters and moderately warm summers. In December and parts of January, the sun does not appear above the horizon in Vesterålen. The winter season is fascinating in many ways, and the Northern Lights and unique bluish hues play magically on the snow-covered landscape. Conversely, the sun never dips below the horizon during the period of 23 May – 23 July. Recommended Outdoor Clothing, Summer: The weather in Vesterålen can change quickly. Even though good, warm weather is forecast, rainy and cold intervals may occur. Therefore you should bring along windproof and water-resistant jacket and trousers. A hat or headband is a good idea for boat trips or hiking in case the weather gets a bit brisk. Bring gloves, too. They are good to have in case of chilly weather. Sturdy hiking boots also help to ensure a comfortable trip. Recommended Outdoor Clothing, Winter: Your inner layer of clothing should consist of textiles that absorb sweat and keep the skin dry. Avoid cotton against your skin. The next layer should insulate, like wool, fleece, or down, for instance. Your outer layer of clothing protects you against wind and rain. Wear windproof and water-resistant jackets and trousers. Avoid cotton trousers or jeans underneath. On your head: Fleece or woollen hats retain your body heat. On your hands: Mittens are best because your fingers “share a room”. Fleece or wool underneath, windproof mittens on top. On your feet: Wool or fleece worn directly against the skin retain warmth and absorb moisture. Waterproof mountain boots are a good investment.

Totally upgraded in 2016 / 17! We hope that we for season 2017/18 may wish you welcome to Sortland – center of beautiful Vesterålen. We have two hotels in town centre with a total of 103 rooms. Strand Hotell has 37 twin/double rooms and Sortland has 66 twin/double rooms. Dinner is served at Sortland Hotell. Distance between the hotels is only 300 meters! Sortland Hotell has refreshed and refurnished all the rooms!

Vesterålen Apartment – Top quality apartments at Jørnfjorden - close to nature Welcome to Vesterålen Apartment, scenically located right by the Jørnfjorden. We are open in the winter season only from October 1st to April 15th. Due to the fact that we are fully booked in the summer seasons for 3 years starting this summer 2017. We offer highly quality apartments furnished in modern Nordic style. Our main building contains three separate apartments (approx. 60 square meters each). Each apartment also has an overhead sleeping alcove. Each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen, lounge, and sleeping facilities for 6 persons. A separate boathouse (40

square meters) offers facilities for 4 persons. An additional community house provides opportunities for meetings and functions. Building work was concluded in 2012. Holmvik Brygge – step into history Holmvik Brygge in the harbor of Nyksund is a living museum, where our guests can experience how fishermen were living about 100 years ago. In addition to their room, our guests can also use some common rooms and our cozy kitchen. Here they can meet other guests in a familiar atmosphere and have a good time.

Holmvik Brygge is an attractive place to visit, also outside the main season. In autumn it invites you to hiking tours, picking berries and mushrooms; in winter you can see the northern lights and a sky with an endless number of stars. Andøy Friluftssenter AS Andøy Friluftssenter is beautiful situated in the wilderness, between a fjord and mountains with marshes, forests and slopes full of animals and bird life. Our gallery restaurant seats 50 persons and is located in our main building, beside our Northern Light salon. We were awarded «Nordlands most innovative restaurant» in 2006 and accepted as a «Norwegian Foodprint» restaurant in June 2011. Panoramic apartment «Midnattsol» is 45m2 in size, is fully equipped for three people - accommodation in one bedroom, and in the living room. Puffin Safari You are very welcome to join our puffin Safari. Departure daily from the harbour of Bleik. Duration: around 90 minutes Cost: adult, NOK 500,- Child, NOK 200,Normally the boat leaves the harbour of Bleik at one and three p.m. (13.00 and 15.00) In the high season – in July- we leave as soon as we have 12 pax on board, latest at one p.m (13.00). THE CHARTER The Charter Fund Northern Norway is a newly launched guarantee scheme, managed by the Northern Norway Tourist Board, designed to help tour operators and their charter airline partners establish new charter flights to northern Norway and the Norwegian Arctic Lapland region, by bringing in tourists directly by air transport. Financed by the counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark, the goal of the fund is to encourage tour operators to partner with our tourism stakeholders in northern Norway to build new tourism markets.

The Fund (and applications for aid) will be administered in accordance with the decision as outlined in the EFTA Surveillance Authority approval notification. Who can apply? Tour operators planning to implement charter tours to Northern Norway (i.e. the counties Nordland, Troms, Finnmark, as well as Svalbard) can apply for aid from the Charter Fund. Approval of applications The applications will be processed confidentially. The Charter Fond management will seek necessary information in order to ensure the substance of the application. In addition to the criteria listed, competence, implementation and financial standing will be important factors in the evaluation process. Criteria for assessing applications 1. The Charter Fund will cover direct charter programs to all airports in Northern Norway, including Svalbard, equipped to receive category Boeing 737 or larger aircraft. The Charter Fund applies to the following airports: • Nordland County: Bodø (BOO), Harstad-Narvik Evenes (EVE), Andøya (ANX)

• Troms County: Tromsø (TOS), Bardufoss (BDU) • Finnmark County: Alta (ALF), Lakselv (LKL), Kirkenes (KKN) • Svalbard (Spitsbergen): Longyearbyen (LYR) 2. All applications to the Charter Fund must be supported by the following three parties: • The tour operator – the funding recipient • A local provider at the destination. The application must include a confirmation from a destination management company, a hotel, a tourist office or any other commercial provider of tourist services, that the tour package will include land arrangements in Northern Norway with a value of at least NOK 800,- per visitor/per stay, and in addition a minimum of two nights’ accommodation. • An airline. The operator must supply a copy of a contract or a valid offer from an airline, with all penalties, obligations and responsibilities applicable to the operation included. 3. The minimum number of flights in the package program schedule is two. Priority will be given to longer package program schedules. Application deadline The management of the Charter Fund must receive complete applications with all relevant information, at the latest 90 days prior to arrival of the first flight. F U N D NORTHERN How the fund works • The tour operator must base their calculations on a 80% cabin factor • The charter fund will reimburse the tour operator if the average Cabin Factor of a charter programme reaches anything less than 80 %, with maximum coverage reached with a cabin factor of only 60 % or less. • The loss is calculated based on a calculated seat-price with 80 % break-even, multiplied by the number of “missing passengers”. The cost of empty-sectors may be included in the calculation. Passenger data will be based on the official numbers recorded by the Norwegian airport authorities (load factor is based on capacity quoted in the airline contract). • Empty sectors will not be taken into account when calculating the average cabin factor, but may be included when the total eligible costs for the charter program is calculated. • If the tour operator claims that non-revenue passengers should be deducted from these numbers, it is the tour operator’s responsibility to document beyond reasonable doubt the identity of such passengers. • The tour operator is obliged to report sales progress to the administration of the fund from time of approval up to the final departure. Reimbursement • Financial support (aid) will be paid to the tour operators from the Charter Fund after the charter program to Northern Norway has been completed and after the management of the Charter Fund has evaluated and confirmed that all award criteria are fulfilled. • If a tour operator fails to comply with the criteria fixed

Rejection of applications Northern Norway Tourist Board may reject an application if the fund limitations for each region have been reached. This also applies if any of the supporting partners of the beneficiary are believed to be unable to meet the expected commercial performance described in the application. Finally, an application may be rejected if it is incomplete or does not comply with the published guidelines of the Charter Fund. Complaints and disputes A Board of Appeal will adjudicate on complaints and or disputes. Other aid Aid under the Charter Fund may be cumulated with other forms of aid. Funding of the same eligible costs under other schemes will be coordinated by the Charter Fund and the aid ceilings in the applicable guidelines will not be exceeded. Operating aid under the Charter Fund cannot be cumulated with other support in respect of the same eligible expenses in order to circumvent the maximum aid parameters as laid down in the Regional Aid Guidelines. Publicity The processing of applications will be treated with full confidentiality. The Charter Fund will each year publish a list of finalized projects containing the recipient company, the amount of aid and the number of passengers concerned.
