THE HISTORY OF LOFOTEN Lofoten’s history revolves around fish. The population has always fished all year round, usually alongside running small farms. Yet it is the seasonal fishing for Norwegian cod that has been of the greatest importance. Every year from January to April, large numbers of skrei (Norwegian Arctic cod) migrate from the north to the marine areas around Lofoten in order to spawn. The fisheries that take place during these months have provided a living for the local people for centuries. In Lofoten, we have found evidence of Stone Age people who subsisted on fishing 6000 years ago. Finds have revealed that they used fishing weights and fishing hooks made from bone and horn. The area’s natural resources also formed the basis for one of Northern Norway’s largest and most powerful chieftain’s residences during the Viking Age. Borg is the site of the world’s largest longhouse, which is no less than 83 metres long. Explore the reconstructed chieftain’s house and travel more than 1000 years back in time. Lofoten’s main fish product is stockfish. The conditions in the archipelago are perfect for naturally drying fish of the very highest quality. As long ago as the year 1100, the fishing and production of stockfish was so important that it led to the development of Vágar - the first Middle Age town in Northern Norway. The spawning fish arrived in such enormous quantities that there was more than enough to go round for the population of Lofoten. As a result, fishermen from across the whole of Northern Norway flocked to Lofoten to take part in the Lofoten Fishery. They had to sail and row great distances in open boats, often traditional Nordland boats. As many as 30,000 men would arrive during the fishery season. In the fishing villages, they would hire fisherman’s cabins for accommodation, and they would also sell their catches from there too. The traditional fisherman’s cabin dates back at least 1000 years. Find out more about this in Kabelvåg, where you can visit the local squire’s residence with its fisherman’s cabins, and experience life underwater at Lofoten Aquarium. The fisherman’s cabins were hired out by the local squire. These squires had exclusive rights to trade and buy and dry fish.
Stockfish were transported to traders in Bergen, before being sold on across Europe. Stockfish has been a vital export product which has generated substantial revenues for the Norwegian economy. Thanks to the stockfish trade, the fishing villages had economic and cultural contact with the outside world. The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum at Å in Lofoten will give you a fascinating insight into the importance of the fishing villages, through visits to many houses in the fishing village, both with and without a guide. Don’t forget the baker’s either! Stockfish has its own museum in Å. The Norwegian Telecom Museum in Sørvågen presents the fascinating history of communication. The history of the fisherman-farmer is also worth taking in, and a visit to Skaftnes farm in particular is recommended. The unique nature and strong cultural traditions of Lofoten have attracted many artists. Over the past 150 years, Lofoten has been portrayed by artists in a huge variety of genres and there are many art galleries and craft outlets in the area. Kaare Espolin Johnsen, one of Northern Norway’s celebrated artists, chose to set up his gallery in Kabelvåg. Fish are still important in Lofoten to this day. The fishing methods, production processes and fish sales may all have changed, but the principal product remains the same: skrei/ cod and stockfish. In Lofoten, you can get close to history. You will find fisherman’s cabins and fish drying racks side by side with modern technology in modern settlements. Track down the history and prepare to be amazed by the scope of the fisheries and the importance of skrei. Welcome!

IT NEVER ENDS! - ART IN LOFOTEN Artists continue to flock to Lofoten, as does everyone who enjoys seeking out the fascinating works of these creators. It gives us all an opportunity to study up-close the works of the major international talents of the art world, as well as many other extremely professional practitioners, in an area with the country’s largest cluster of artists. The light, the magnificent natural landscape and “the people who inhabit this impoverished coast” remain as important to contemporary artists today as they have always been since the 19th century, when pictorial artists from Norway and further afield came to the archipelago to search for the perfect motif, the light and the diagonals.
and many others with their own sales outlets and galleries. You’ll also find street art, as well as other art, in the landscape. We have extremely diverse art in our urban spaces, as well as some of the best galleries in the country for contemporary art.
Today, artistic experiences in Lofoten are a mecca for many art genres. Numerous galleries present both historical and modern art. Throughout the archipelago, you will find glass-blowers, ceramic artists, jewellery artists, photographers, painters, textile artists, sculptors, film-makers
Lofoten perhaps has most to offer to those seeking to combine natural and cultural experiences.
Kristin Risan Art Educator
Spread across the year are the festivals that reflect our cultural richness: festivals of art, theatre, literature, film and music, celebrating both classical and more recent musical styles. The hunt for the light, the hunt for art never ends.
Welcome to Northern Norway’s main arena for art. Welcome to an encounter with the wild and the beautiful, that which both challenges and pleases.

CYCLING IN LOFOTEN Lofoten is famous for its dramatic natural landscape, and it’s perfect for cycling – much of the terrain is surprisingly flat and easy.
SUGGESTED ROUTES FISKEBØL–LAUKVIK–SVOLVÆR: 68 KM
Evening bike rides, especially in the west and north of the region between late May and mid July, will also give you the chance to cycle under the midnight sun. And if you can avoid the month of July, you can enjoy your cycling holiday without most of the summer traffic. Sea birds, including sea eagles, can be seen in Lofoten all year round. The distances are relatively short: the furthest, from Fiskebøl to Å along the E10 is about 160.7 kilometres.

There are four tunnels, totalling 2.7 kilometres in length. Cyclists are advised to bring waterproof and windproof clothing, good shoes, gloves, reflective vests, helmets, good lights and reflectors for the bikes and a first-aid kit.
Catch a bus or ferry to Fiskebøl. From Fiskebøl, follow the outer edge of Austvågøya to a stunningly beautiful area. Incredible sandy beaches and ideal hiking terrain mean that you will definitely want to take your time. In summer, you can enjoy the midnight sun at Laukvika. The route winds between moorland, lakes and fjord arms. The last part of the route is on the E10.
HENNINGSVÆR–STAMSUND: 63 KM Back to the E10 and past Lyngvær, cycle over Gimsøy Bridge with its lovely views, and stop off to walk around Gimsøy. Very few cars, lovely walking country and stunning sandy beaches make this a superb trip. In summer, enjoy the midnight sun from the north side of this island. You can also stay overnight in Hov. To get to Vestvågøy, you have to cross Sundklakkstraumen. Follow RV 815 along the southern edge, turn off onto Valbergveien, a relatively quiet, tarmacked road, and cycle on to Stamsund. For timetables and more information about our cycling routes, take a look at our website www.lofoten.info, where you can also buy ‘Hjulgleder’, the cycling handbook about Lofoten. It’s a very useful tool for anyone who wants to discover Lofoten by bicycle.

The roads can be quite busy if you travel on the E10 in high season, but there are plenty of quieter side roads to choose from. These lovely roads also allow cyclists to get close to small communities off the beaten track. You can often find yourself cycling almost completely alone in a peaceful, open landscape with stunning views wherever you look.

EXPERIENCE THE ADVENTURE Winter in Lofoten is the season of Arctic colours, with some great opportunities for relaxing or enjoying a more active holiday. Here are some of our best tips for the winter tourist: SEA SAFARI
Experiencing Lofoten from the sea is a must! Glide past islands and majestic mountains, and even sail through the fabled Trollfjorden fjord, which is surrounded by craggy peaks. An encounter with the mighty sea eagle will definitely leave the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. If you’re lucky, you might even see one diving for a fish.
THE LEGENDARY LOFOTEN FISHERY
For generations, fishermen from all along this coast have participated in the world-famous Lofoten Fishery, which takes place just off the islands between February and late April. You can also join in the hunt for big Arctic Cod – your chances of catching one are excellent. Or perhaps you just want to wander round, look at the boats and soak up the atmosphere.

NB: Use local certified guides for the best and safest experiences in the mountains. Remember to consider the weather and the avalanche risk before setting off and when out on the mountain. www.varsom.no
PHOTOGRAPHY TRIPS
The light in the winter is very special and this, combined with the spectacular and stunningly beautiful landscape of Lofoten, makes it very attractive to photography enthusiasts. We often see fiery skies with photographers all standing in a line to capture the moment for eternity. The hunt for the Northern Lights is very popular amongst photographers too.
NORTHERN LIGHTS
The dance of the Northern Lights is a magical sight. There are many Northern Lights activities in Lofoten, and even the backdrop is spectacular. Remember to bring a tripod if you want to take photos of this phenomenon. You can see the Northern Lights from the end of August until the beginning of April. Lofoten is a focal point for summit trips on skis or snowshoes and offers everything from easy walks to challenging mountaineering. Skiing from summit to fjord is a unique experience that we recommend to everyone! Maybe the concept of Ski & Sail appeals to you? Or you can stay at a ski

THE LEGENDARY LOFOTEN FISHERY “The fisheries are, and will hopefully always remain, Norway’s most important gold mine”. So wrote the Norwegian Parliament in 1816.
Every winter, huge numbers of cod, or skrei, migrate to Lofoten from the Barents Sea in order to spawn. This has provided a living for people in the region for almost five thousand years. In other words, the Lofoten Fishery is an ancient livelihood. The fisheries eventually grew so big that they also became important for people far outside Northern Norway. In fact, over the past thousand years, the seasonal fishery has been of vital importance for the whole nation. Following the history of cod makes for a fascinating journey through Norway’s history. Sagas, legislation and court records, old accounts and regulations dating back to the 11th century all paint a clear picture. It was the cod that gave us the power and money necessary to establish the church, an administration, monarchy and government and, eventually, our own parliament. The cod made it possible to build the nation stone-by-stone.

THE LEGENDARY LOFOTEN FISHERY
Without it, people would not have settled in Northern Norway. Bergen, Ålesund and Kristiansund would never have come into existence. And what about Oslo and the rest of Southern Norway? Without the cod, the Vikings would never have existed either. Their most important weapon was not the sword, spear or bow, but the skrei which the people who lived along the coast had learned to dry, in the absence of salt. It was absolutely vital not only as a commodity, but also as ships’ provisions, because in stockfish, they had a nutritious food with an unlimited expiry date which made it possible to survive long voyages to Greenland, Russia and the far south of Europe even to America, 500 years before Columbus. The first exporter of stockfish we know of was Torolf Kveldulfson. According to Egil’s saga, he travelled to Lofoten in 870 with his large ship, filled it with stockfish

terpart in times gone by. Modern equipment and larger boats have enabled the inshore fleet to fish not just along the entire coast, but also out in the ocean, where large catches are taken before the cod arrive in Lofoten. The Lofoten Fishery remains an important seasonal fishery that attracts fishermen from Finnmark in the north to Mandal in the south, and is still a fascinating sight, particularly in March and early April. At this time, fish factories all along the Lofoten Wall are working at full stretch, and huge quantities of fish are hung up on drying racks. In June, the fish are taken down from the racks, sorted into eighteen different qualities and exported to many countries around the world. The biggest customer is Italy. The refrain “Viva lo stocafisso! Viva la Norvegia!” is still sung in some areas today, as it was in the past. © CH
and sailed to England, where he swapped the cargo for essential goods. The Hanseaten, who had their own fleet of warships, dominated trade across much of Northern Europe. Stockfish became one of the most important products after they became established themselves in Bergen in the late 13th century, as is apparent from the coat of arms. Stockfish takes up half of the coat of arms and even has a crown. Today, the same coat of arms adorns the Hansa Pilsener. In the 1560s, every year, around 200 boats used to sail from Northern Norway to Bergen carrying stockfish, cod liver oil and roe, which were then sold to countries across Europe. On average, this trade represented an annual value of 105,000 Norwegian spesidaler (the currency of Norway between 1816 and 1875), a sum three times greater than Norway’s state finances combined during this period. For at least a thousand years, right up until the early 20th century in fact, fishing was carried out from open boats, particularly the larger Nordland boats as well as large rowing boats. These boats were propelled either via sails or oars. By the 1920s, a high proportion of the fishing fleet used engine power, which enabled the boats to have a smaller crew on board. However, the Lofoten Fishery remained a major attraction for fishermen for many years after the Second World War. In 1860, around 24,000 men took part. The popularity of the fishery reached a peak in 1895 when 32,000 fishermen took part. Since 1990, between 2000 and 4000 fishermen have participated every year. However, the total catch has not declined. A “shark” type fishing boat today is ten times more efficient than its coun-

THE TASTE OF LOFOTEN Don’t just experience Lofoten – taste it! The district boasts a host of restaurants serving traditional food and dishes with a modern twist, and there is always a hint of fresh seashore air and the tang of dried fish and seaweed. The sun, wind and rain that you feel on your face are what transform cod into dried fish and give them their special taste. And reminders of our vibrant culinary traditions can be seen all around you. Hardy, well-adapted plants and animals form our harvest here. Even on seemingly wild, windswept land, oases of fertile soil exist, sheltered from the cold north wind by high mountains. Bright summers make up for the short growing season and create unexpected success stories, such as carrots that are lent an exceptional flavour by the rays of the midnight sun. The quality of ”Lofoten Dried Fish” has given it the same geographical protection in Norway and Europe as champagne and Parma ham! And rightly so – Norway has been developing this trademark for a thousand years. It was the Vikings who introduced dried fish to the world, when they took it with them on their travels and bartered it for other goods. Using one of the oldest known food preservation methods in the world, our fish are still dried naturally with no additives. The head and body are dried separately, and the innards are removed before hanging the bodies on racks. The livers are used for cod-liver oil and the roe becomes Norwegian caviar. We also eat the cheeks and tongues. When winter has turned to spring, the fish are brought indoors for the dry days of June, and they are sorted by size and appearance. Throughout the winter, you can find dried fish hanging on racks, houses and boathouse walls. Everyone here enjoys it as a tasty snack, and it is always on hand in case of a spontaneous midsummer party!
We hope that you will enjoy the chance to taste your way through Lofoten. It doesn’t come any fresher than here on the coast. Have you never tried dried fish? After steeping, it can be prepared in a variety of different ways and is something that should not be missed. Adventurous gourmets can also try ”boknafisk” or ”hjellosing”. And Lofoten has even more to offer. Sample Lofoten lamb, which has grown up on steep, lush hillsides. Cows and goats give us meat and a variety of dairy products. Herbs grow wild and in herb gardens. And the fact that we’re north of the Arctic Circle doesn’t put off our honey bees. The midnight sun gives a special Arctic flavour to our natural products, and we are just as proud of our eggs, ice cream and chocolate as we are our pâté, herring and fish cakes made according to traditional recipes. Salmon, shellfish, whale and other fish are available on our doorstep. Fantastic fresh ingredients mean that our food tastes amazing, whether you make it yourself in a ”rorbu” or treat yourself at one of our many local restaurants. Our shops stock local food or you can buy it direct from many of our local producers. Local food is labelled with an ”L” in shops. No matter what you choose, you will get to feel, hear, see, smell and taste Lofoten! Have a great trip! #matfralofoten & #matilofoten

THE TASTE OF LOFOTEN
www.lofoten.info
Skrei and stockfish Skrei, that fantastic fish that visits Lofoten every year from January to April, swimming all the way from the Barents Sea to lay eggs and reproduce, or “spawn” as it is known in scientific circles. From January to April, the sea “boils” with skrei and the fishermen catch and deliver the freshest fish imaginable. Fresh liver and roe, and the heads are used too - in other words, a versatile raw ingredient of the very highest quality.
© TERJE RAKKE - NORDIC LIFE
Even before Christmas, we chefs are waiting for the latest news on the skrei. Are they on their way? Have they got far? How many have been seen? Tense... Impatient... But we never wait in vain. Early in the skrei season, we fill the menus with fresh skrei. It can be boiled, baked, fried, poached, cured, pickled and even served completely raw. A little later, around the turn of February/March, the first “boknafisk” (a variant of stockfish) of the year appears. The excitement is now palpable. Is it going to be a good year? We sniff, squeeze, stroke and investigate it closely. We boil and test it in the same way that a sommelier tastes and tests his wines. Nothing is left to chance. In March, the fish are hung up on the racks. They will stay there for the rest of the spring, and when May turns to June, we get ready to harvest the year’s stockfish. Once again, we stand by, ready to test the quality. During our childhood, we bashed the stockfish on a stone with the back of an axe before chewing the little pieces for an age. But it doesn’t always stay dry. The completely round stockfish is often soaked in water for several days, before being filleted and prepared for further processing. If the skrei is a fantastic ingredient,
stockfish is even better. The taste and consistency are quite different from fresh fish. And we chefs love stockfish. We can now start to create our favourite dishes. It can be heat-treated for just 20 minutes, or boiled for five hours. And the stockfish just gets better and better all the time. Seasoning that you wouldn’t consider suitable for skrei now suddenly become perfect for the softened stockfish. The taste varies from fish to fish, perhaps because of the size of the fish, but the weather is just as important - the temperature, the wind and the rain during the drying period. Even the specific location in Lofoten where the fish are dried is important too. And think, of all the places in the world, it’s right here in Lofoten that it’s at its very best!

EXPLORE LOFOTEN ON HORSEBACK
Svolvær is the administrative centre of Vågan, with many shops, galleries and the Lofoten Kulturhus. The goat-like Svolværgeita looks down on the town, a challenge to climbers. Most of Lofoten’s accommodation is here, and it is one of the most important harbours in North Norway for maritime services.
A historic area with roots going back to the year 8000, this was the most densely populated area in North Norway in the Middle Ages because of the Lofoten fishery. All the fish were shipped from here for onward export to the continent. Lofoten’s first church was built in Kabelvåg by King Øystein, probably in 1103, and rorbu fishermen’s cabins were built around 1120. The present Vågan Church, also known as ‘Lofoten Cathedral’, was built in 1898. Kabelvåg is part of the area’s cultural history, and also has museums, galleries and an aquarium.
LAUKVIK Its beautiful location on the outer edge means that Laukvik is perfect for hiking. You can enjoy the midnight sun here in summer and the Northern Lights in winter. Visit the Polarlightcenter to learn more about these natural phenomena.
www.lofoten.info
AUSTVÅGØY & GIMSØY HENNINGSVÆR Bridges join the many islands of Henningsvær to the mainland. The Venice of Lofoten, Henningsvær has played a significant role in Lofoten’s fishing history and is still a fascinating destination with its many small craft shops, art gallery and pleasant atmosphere. The nearby mountains are excellent for climbing.
GIMSØY Gimsøy on the outer edge of Lofoten has fantastic views of the ocean and midnight sun. Hov is one of Lofoten’s oldest inhabited spots; treasures from the past such as Stone Age and Iron Age burial mounds and landing places may be found between the fairways and tees of the golf course.
TROLLFJORD, DIGERMULEN AND SKROVA The Trollfjord lies in the beautiful Raftsund Strait between Austvågøy and Hinnøy. At its most spectacular, the fjord narrows to a mere 70 metres wide, with high cliffs plunging straight into the sea. On the other side is Digermulen, first visited by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 21 July 1889. Further on are the islands of Skrova, with 200 or so inhabitants in a fishing village famous for its connection to the Lofoten fishery and whaling.
HIKING TRAILS HEIA, HENNINGSVÆR (200 m) Start at the head of the valley near Festvåg. Follow the path on the far right. Enjoy the wonderful views across the entire Vestfjord basin. On a warm summer’s day, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in lake Heiavannet. Return trip: 1.5 hours.
HOVEN (368 m) The walk up Hoven on Gimsøya is very enjoyable. Start at Hov. Return trip: about 2.5 hours.
AROUND STOR-KONGSVANNET (Easy) An easy round walk through a varied landscape around the largest lake in Kabelvåg-marka. Start either at Solbakken west of Kabelvåg or by Kongsmarka/Lille Kongsvann in Svolvær. 12 km, 2-3 hours. You can buy hiking maps in tourist information centres or on the website www.lofoten.info

VESTVÅGØY LEKNES, ALSTAD AND BALLSTAD Nestled between green meadows and mountains lies Leknes, Vestvågøy’s administrative centre. Leknes has a hotel, restaurants, shops, a pharmacy, bakery, workshops and more. The area around Leknes has plenty to attract walkers, surfers and paragliders. Ballstad is one of the biggest active fishing villages in Lofoten. Cod liver oil is still produced here and you can find the world’s biggest mural and lots of ‘rorbu’ for your fisherman’s cabin holiday.
MORTSUND, STAMSUND AND ROLVSFJORD There are many places to visit along the southern side of the island. Mortsund and Stamsund are still busy fishing villages today. The Hurtigruten stops at Stamsund on its way north and south; there are ‘rorbu’ rentals and restaurants, a gallery, theatre and downhill ski slope. The fishing industry and contemporary theatre are important sources of jobs in Stamsund. Valbergveien is a recommended cycle route, with many beautiful beaches, walks and places to stay.
BORG, EGGUM, UNSTAD AND SAUPSTAD The Lofotr Viking Museum is set among the fertile farmland of Borg, displaying findings from the archaeological excavations there. These findings show us how the V ikings lived 1000 years ago. Agriculture is an important industry for Vestvågøy, and this is reflected in the local food producers. Not far from Borg are not one but two farms that produce their own cheeses, herbs and s ausages. See ‘the Head’ statue at Eggum, and climb an amazing fortress left over from the war. Join surfers from all over the world at Unstad on one of the best surfing beaches in Europe.

HIKING TRAILS FROM UTAKLEIV - AROUND THE WALL, HAUKLAND AND OVER THE PASS BACK TO UTAKLEIV. From Utakleiv, the walk follows a good road around “the wall” towards Haukland, with the sea on one side and steep mountainsides on the other. From Haukland, you can walk over the pass on the old road to Utakleiv or choose the easier walk through the tunnel. If you decide to go through the tunnel, remember to wear a reflective vest which you’ll find in the mailboxes at both ends of the tunnel. The trail is marked and there are QR codes along the trail. These codes can be used to access videos and stories about the road and the local cultural history.
EGGUM Start from the fortress at Eggum and follow the road, which eventually turns into a path, to the beacon. Particularly good views of the midnight sun here. Return trip: 3 hours.
JUSTADTINDEN (738 m) Long, fairly tough hike (607 m ascent) to one of Vestvågøy’s highest peaks. Take the road at the north end of the car park at Hagskaret (131 m above sea level) and follow this to the radio mast, after which the path is clearly marked. Some boggy areas. Return trip: 6 hours. You can buy hiking maps in tourist information centres or on the website www.lofoten.info

VÆRØY Værøy, penultimate island in the Lofoten archipelago, has every possible Lofoten feature: midnight sun, white beaches, bird cliffs, and a historic but still active fishing village.
HIKING TRAILS NUPSNESET AND HÅHEIA
The distinctive Værøy mountains are just as steep as those in the rest of Lofoten, but much easier to climb – you can get great all-round views after a quick hike. Almost all of the jobs here are related to the seasonal fisheries – cod in winter, halibut and coalfish in summer, and herring in autumn. The huge sea-bird colonies on the outer side of Værøy’s Måstad peninsula used to be an essential source of food for the islanders. The rare Norwegian Lundehund dog comes from the village of Måstad, now abandoned but an idyllic hiking spot. There are many attractions on Værøy, like Lofoten’s oldest church, painters, ceramics, clothes designers, antiques, deep-sea fishing and RIB boat trips.
An enjoyable, fairly tough walk takes you past the school to Marka where the road ends. From here, e ither continue right up the path or road to Håheia, 400 m high, with an incredible panoramic view – or continue through a gravel pit and into beautiful Sørlandshagen. There are many paths to choose between here, but they all eventually lead to Nupsneset. Tip: follow the shore back, and enjoy the lovely pebble beach.
MÅSTAD The walk from Nordlandshagen to Måstad is decidedly more strenuous. The track is marked, and with sturdy shoes and a bit of stamina you should have a wonderful time. At an easy pace the walk should take 2 to 3 hours each way. Please remember that the track might be slippery in wet weather.

RØST Outermost in the Lofoten archipelago, about 100 km to the west of Bodø and 115 km north of the A rctic Circle, we find the 365 islands, isles and skerries of Røst. The largest of them, its highest point barely 11 m above sea level, is Røstlandet.
HIKING TRAILS STEINKIRKA The Yellow Trail is the shortest, about 0.5 km long, leading to the ruins of the 1835 stone church, consecrated in 1839 by Bishop Kierschow. It should have held 110 people, but only had 78 seats. The later chancel and sacristy were consecrated in 1883. More information can be found on the board nearby.
Further south, the islands of Storfjellet, Vedøya, Trenyken and Hærnyken loom out of the water like giant monuments. Trenyken is the best known, with its 5000 year old cave paintings and three defiantly towering peaks. The cliffs south of Røstlandet are home to one of Europe’s biggest sea bird colonies.
ÅNNHAMMEREN About 1.5 km long, the Blue Trail leads to Ånnhammeren. Though only 10 metres high, Ånnhammeren is a natural landmark and viewpoint on the island. There is no evidence to suggest that this was a place for spirits (“ånder”), the name probably coming from the Norwegian “ørn” (eagle). There used to be eagles’ nests here, and it is still an overwhelming sight to see flocks of eagles circling the crag. The trail leads through a sheltered but flat and open area of bogs and shallow ponds. The vegetation is extremely diverse because of the huge variations in salinity.
And at the very edge of it all is Skomvær Lighthouse, N orway’s most fabled, weather-lashed lighthouse. The entire population of the municipality lives on Røstlandet and a few lesser islands linked by roads and bridges. The local council offices, church, schools, kindergarten, shop and post office, restaurants, hotels, airport, and fish processing facilities are also here. Røst has inspired many famous artists, including Theodor Kittelsen K. Espolin Johnsen and Luciano Fabro, contributor to Artscape Nordland. Planes and ferries depart several times a day during the summer to Røst.

NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE THROUGH LOFOTEN National Tourist Routes are specially selected driving tours through the very best scenery that Norway has to offer. The E10 through Lofoten is one such designated National Tourist Route. Fortunately, there are still roads which are not simply designed to get you from A to B as quickly as possible. National Tourist Routes are beautiful driving tours that are a little out of the ordinary. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has created these routes for you to explore. They offer spectacular viewpoints, facilities, car parking, outdoor furniture, paths and artwork. Bold innovative architecture set in magnificent landscapes is a hallmark of all the National Tourist Routes. Along the Tourist Route through Lofoten, these are some of the “attractions” you will encounter:
1. AKKARVIKODDEN (Moskenes) The rest area has granite furniture, magnificent views over the sea to the south east and a toilet building which mimics the steep mountains of the raw Lofoten landscape.
2. RAMBERGSTRANDA (Flakstad) Next to the beautiful beach surrounded by majestic mountains is a photographic viewpoint. A narrow path made from railway sleepers leads down to the beautiful beach.
3. EGGUM (Vestvågøy) Facing the ocean is a rest area in the shape of an amphitheatre, with car parking and toilet facilities.
4. TORVDALSHALSEN (Vestvågøy) This is a rest area that offers fantastic views over Vestvåg øya. It is surrounded by long screens and benches that provide protection against the wind and weather.
5. AUSTNESFJORDEN (Vågan) The rest area is situated south of Sildpollen, and a wooden walkway has been built that floats on the landscape. It offers fantastic views across to the stunning mountains and Sildpollneset chapel. For more information on other spectacular viewing points, service buildings and rest areas in Lofoten, visit www.nasjonaleturistveger.no

LOFOTEN CODE OF CONDUCT Welcome to Lofoten, the world’s most beautiful islands! Please be considerate of your surroundings by following these simple guidelines. This way, you can be sure that your visit does not diminish other people’s experienc
1
CAMP IN DESINATED AREAS
2 LEAVE NO TRACE. Avoid leaving traces in nature, such as cairns, tent pegs etc. Allow others to have the same great experience that you’ve had. 3
FOLLOW THE PATH AND AVOID CREATION OF NEW PATHS
4 THROW WASTE IN THE WASTE BINS. If you are in an area without bins, bring your waste with you until you can dispose of it. 5 USE PUBLIC TOILETS. If none are present, go in the ocean or dig a pit in the ground. Avoid using wet wipes, as they take a long time to decompose. 6 RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY. Camping closer than 150 metres from an occupied house or cabin is forbidden. You can only camp on cultivated land if you have an agreement with the land owner. 7 BE CONSIDERATE IN TRAFFIC. The roads in Lofoten are narrow, yet many use them. Keep well clear of cyclists when passing them. Be especially mindful of bicycles in tunnels. 8 BAN ON FIRES. During the summer months, there is a general ban on open fires. Use designated sites for fire, and make sure there is no risk for a forest fire. 9 RESPECT WILDLIFE. Avoid disturbing animals unnecessarily. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. 10 IN THE INTEREST OF THE ENVIRONMENT, as well as your own experience and safety, we recommend activities oranised by tour operator. You can find a list of such organisers here.
Welcome back!

WHERE TO STAY Lofoten offers a full range of accommodation, but the most characteristic is the ‘rorbu’ fisherman’s cottage. There are now plenty of hotels, each with its own character, ranging from 190-room conference hotels to cosy 20-room family-run hotels. Lofoten also has cabins, seahouses, hostels and campsites, and you can find them all on www.lofoten.info. See page 2 for the symbols key. PRICES
