WELCOME TO HONNINGSVÅG AND NORTH CAPE AT 71° NORTH For more than 300 years, people have travelled to North Cape to experience the northernmost point of Europe. Feel the atmosphere - remembering that all that lies in front of you is sea and ice.

The far-off horizon forms a picture of the world’s circumference. We all know that the earth is round, but it still feels like we’re standing on the edge of the world.

POPULATION: Honningsvåg is the main centre of Nordkapp municipality which has a total population of around 3300. In the town of Honningsvåg alone, the population is around 2500.

HISTORY: Honningsvåg resembles the typical landscape of villages reconstructed after the World War II, around the 1950s.

Honningsvåg Church is the oldest building in the municipality and dates back to 1885.

SHOPPING: Gift shops and clothes shops, book shop, chemist, watchmakers and optician, sports shop, electronics shop and kiosk are all located on Storgata and in the harbour area in Honningsvåg town centre. There is also a bank with ATM in the centre and three grocery stores in the Honningsvåg area.

Postal services are available at the Rimi supermarket in the town centre.

URBAN LIFE: Restaurants; Rica Hotellet, Corner Café, Tre Kokker and Mix (fast food).

Nightlife: Z, Bryggerie and Corner Café.

OTHER: Museum, cinema, swimming pool, fitness centre, downhill slopes and cross-country trails (in Nordvågen – 7 km from Honningsvåg).

CLIMATE: Honningsvåg and the North Cape area have a typical coastal climate with varying weather. The winters are mild, with an average temperature of -3.6˚C in the middle of winter. The Polar Night starts around November 20 and lasts until around January 22. December is the darkest month of the year. You can experience the Midnight Sun from mid-May to the end of July.

3 IMPORTANT INFORMATION The road to the North Cape is open to traffic year-round, but during winter all traffic is by convoy driving and no one may drive the final 13 km to the North Cape outside the convoy. The meeting point for the convoys is the Skarsvåg crossing, 13 km from the North Cape.All vehicles are permitted in both convoys to North Cape, but we recommend cars and private buses to follow the first convoy.

DAILY CONVOYS FROM THE CROSSING 11:30 am and 12.30pm returning from the North Cape at 1.30pm and 2.15pm. If you don’t feel comfortable driving in the convoy or you don’t have you own car, there is a scheduled bus from Honningsvåg on weekdays.

ADVICE FOR DRIVING IN A CONVOY IN WINTER CONDITIONS: • Ensure you have enough fuel. Keep a torch, snow shovel and tow rope easy accessible.

• It is wise to bring hot drinks and some food. Wear warm winter clothing and warm footwear.

• To avoid icing on the windscreen, keep the car cold and use cold air, not warm, on the windscreen.

• Use emergency lights and fog light, if your car is equipped with this.

• Keep your eye on the car in front. Keep steady speed and follow the convoy • Do not stop your car or try to turn around, again, follow the convoy. If you do have to stop or the convoy stops never leave your car. This may be fatal.

At the rear of the convoy there will always be another snow plough or safety car. The driver of the front and rear car maintain contact during the convoy. The driver of the snow plough may stop the convoy at regular intervals to ensure that all cars have caught up.

The driver of the snow plough may refuse vehicles he/she deems unsuitable for the trip.

• No minimum number of participants.

• Duration of activities: The time stated for the activities is pick-up and drop off time at the tourist information office.

• We recommend thermal underwear, woollen/fleece sweater, tracksuit trousers, warm socks and a scarf when taking part in activities.

• The organisers have the right to cancel all excursions in the event of adverse weather or driving conditions.

• We cannot guarantee a sighting of the Northern Lights – this relies on weather conditions.

Departure at 11am from the tourist information office in Honningsvåg. The bus will follow the convoy and drive to North Cape at 11.30am from the Skarsvåg crossing – returning from North Cape at 1.30pm. The departure time for the scheduled bus may be changed from 11am to 12 noon, subject to weather and driving conditions.

It is also possible to arrange an extra bus at 12 noon on request.

NORTH CAPE MUSEUM

In order for your stay in Northern Norway to be as comfortable as possible, it is important to have the right clothes. Bring warm and comfortable clothes and shoes. We recommend wearing 100% wool or similar quality clothing next to your skin. Layer your clothing, so that you can easily regulate your temperature by removing or adding a layer. Outer clothing should be lined and windproof. Most activity organisers supply clothing for excursions, i.e. thermal suits, shoes, hat and mittens.
