Senja is Norway’s second largest island, situated on the 69th parallel north. Here the landscapes are filled with contrast with the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights - depending on the time of year. Trips to the island’s mountain peaks are equally recommended both in summer and in winter. All the tracks are well marked. Go straight up or straight down to where mountain and sea meet – the distances are never that big. See small fishing villages and settlements that clutch at narrow strips of land trapped between the sea and mountains.

In summer you can take the ferry from Harstad/Skrolsvik, Brensholmen/Botnhamn and Gryllefjord/Andenes. Year round you can take the Hurtigruten Finnsnes/Tromsø or the Express Ferry Finnsnes/Tromsø-Harstad, Lysnes/Tromsø, Skrolsvik/Harstad. A trip to adventure on Senja – where new experiences await and abound When you come across on the ferry from Brensholmen it’s just a short way to Husøy – a tiny pearl of an island situated out in the mouth of the fjord. Close proximity to the best fishing grounds is the reason why people have settled on this idyllic little island and why people come from all over the world to work and still settle here. In the summer season you must visit Den lille Perle (The Little Pearl) run by Susanne and have a good cup of coffee with something “on the side”. You can also buy souvenirs and reproduction clothing, etc.

stay at Mefjord Brygge that offers accommodation in “rorbuer” (typical fishermen’s shacks), modern apartments and water front properties. They have some marvellous well marked paths covering the entire area and offer good food and various activities. They are open all season. Out of season they open on request.

If you have got time we recommend taking a trip to Laukvik, where you’ll find a small fishing camp called Altiettferie (All-in-One Holidays). Here you can rent a boat if they’ve got any spare. Or you can find a nice beach or somewhere to pitch a tent and camp out.

Joker Skaland is where you can buy petrol and diesel and they have a wonderful grocery store where you can stock up with everything you need for your trip.

If you drive along the National Tourist Route you’ll get to see epic scenery with the sea and mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. The mountains go straight up and dive straight down to meet the sea – and the distances are never all that big. The National Tourist Route has constructed two fantastic vantage points at Tungeneset and in Bergsfjorden where we recommend taking a stop to take pictures in spectacular surroundings. Mefjordvær is a small fishing village and part of a thriving coastal community. Here you can

At Skaland you can stay at the Skaland Motell, where they have cabins for rent and serve traditional wholesome Norwegian food. Open all year round.

Basecamp Senja has one of its two bases in Skaland, the Posthuset Expedition Lodge. It is a modern and cosy place that accommodates up to ten people. Here there are various activities including storytelling. Or you can take a trip on a «Zodiac» on the Bergsfjorden which is one of their specialities. Open on request. Kråkeslottet (the “ramshackle castle”) on Bøvær is well worth a visit. It is a very old fish factory from 1900 that stands aloft on piles as far out as you can go in the sea. Its open all through July and here you’ll find a café and art exhibition known as ArtiJuli (July Art).

Kråkeslottet If you carry on driving you’ll come to the world’s biggest troll, the Senjatrollet. Grown-ups and children alike all find something of interest at the “Senjatroll” and “Hulderheimen” in Finnsæter on Senja! Here you’ll find two huge trolls that have many surprises packed inside them. The Sesame Train, a gallery, café, large souvenir shop, a working pewter smith with his own shop, animals and much, much more. Open from June to August, Easter and at other times on request. Four kilometres from the Senjatroll is Hamn i Senja, the largest tourist centre on Senja, idyllically situated on the rocky shore line with all its islets and hidden reefs. They have plenty of capacity for courses, conferences and other gatherings. You can have a good meal in their restaurant, stay in their modern apartments or water front properties, rent a kayak, go fishing

or participate in other activities. Open from June to August, and at other times on request. Driving on brings you to Gryllefjord where the ferry goes to Andenes in the summer season. In Gryllefjord you can eat at Ginas Kafe and stay at the water front property Kaikanten. Here you’ll experience a rugged and salty fishing village and can rent a boat or share a day in the life of a working fisherman if you want. If you drive over to Torsken then you’ll see Torsken kirke, a cruciform church from 1784 in Torsken municipality, Troms County. The church is built of timber and seats 100. It is painted red and houses many old relics such as a crucifix which was probably made in Lübeck in the 1550’s.

Gammelbutikken If you move on to Botnhamn once again you can drive to Finnsnes and stay at Fjordbotn Camping, Vardnes urtegård (in Gibostad with two small guest houses), Senjagården (in Gibostad, where they have plenty of room and inexpensive prices), Senja vandrerhjem or the Finnsnes Hotell. Along the way we recommend stopping at the Senja Familiepark. Here you and the children can have a wonderful day and see many different types of exotic animals, and you can have your own barbeque and enjoy yourselves. They also offer accommodation in stylish holiday homes. Further south on Senja we recommend a visit to ArtSenja. The ArtSenja gallery exhibits original art and crafts from 25 professional artists from around the region and includes paintings, graphics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and glass. Opening times can vary, but they are open almost all year round. Just before you get to Art Senja is the Jordhuset in Vesterfjell, the second of Basecamp Senja’s bases. Jordhuset was erected by local entrepreneurs and has a fantastic ambiance with its fire pit and seating for 70. At the Jordhuset they arrange “Senja evenings” with local fare, Christmas and other parties, various activities and meetings. It is an excellent starting point for any Senja expedition. Open on request. In Tranøy you’ll find four camp sites. Senja Camping has specialised in providing activities for families with children and has a

pool with water slides that is open in the summer and a “mini-zoo”. Driving on you’ll come to Tranøybotn Camping and Skatvik Camping where you can stay in their cabins, have a barbeque and go sea fishing in one of the boats they have for rent - depending on the season. Tranøybotn Camping is close by the Ånderdalen National Park. On the extremities of Flakstadvåg is Flakstadvåg Camping. Midt-Troms Museum has their main exhibition at the Finnsnes Tourist Information Office, where you can also get information about the other exhibitions they have. This year sees the opening of Kveitmuseet in Skrolsvikt. Gammelbutikken (the Old Village Store) which is also located there is open for the season during June to August when the ferry Skrolsvik/Stornes is running. We recommend calling in on these attractions. At the «Gammelbutikken» you can buy freshly baked home-made cakes, have a cup of coffee and enjoy the exhibition of things from times gone by. They also have a lot of interesting souvenirs you can buy, both from local and other suppliers. The outermost place you can stay at is at the beautiful Gullvang Gård, 4 km from Stonglandseiet towards Lekangsund. Here you can rent a bike, kayak or boat. EATING OUT: Slåttebakken Gård: Open only on request. At the farm you’ll find an old cow shed that has been turned into a dainty restaurant and in the kitchens the cook prepare local specialities that are used in the catering business and also available in the restaurant. They have based their menu on local culinary traditions and provide an intimate setting where they are both host and cook for you. Finnsnes Hotell has its own restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinners with an á là carte menu. They also have their own group menu. The restaurant is open every day until 10 pm and on Sundays to 6 pm and serves excellent local food. Senjastua: Is more or less «always» open and serves traditional dishes using local ingredients. Fish dishes are particularly well represented on the menu. They follow the seasons and always serve a taste of Senja. The kitchen is open from 11 am to 10 pm on week days and from 12 noon to 10 pm on Sundays.

Mefjord Brygge: Open all year round. Here they serve local dishes where fish quite naturally is one the main ingredients. They recommend their “Yttersia-menu”. Skaland Kro og Motell: Open all year and serve local home fare using local ingredients. Hamn i Senja: Have a renowned kitchen that prepares delicious dishes using whatever ingredients are in season. They have become very popular for wedding receptions. From early spring to late autumn they cater for weddings every week end. The restaurant is open from June to August and on request at other times. Ginas Kafe & Kiosk: Offer a simple yet varied and tasty menu ranging from traditional Norwegian dishes to exotic Asian dishes. Open all through the summer season. At other times opening hours can vary.

Jordhuset: Open only on request. At the Jordhuset they arrange “Senja evenings” with local fare, Christmas and other parties, various activities and meetings. It is an excellent starting point for any Senja expedition.

Senja Camping is situated by the Lakselvvassdraget on Senja, 15 km from Finnsnes. Senja Camping’s focus is on providing activities for families with children. Our location makes it ideal for car trips around Senja. We have a swimming pool with a slide, are near to fishing spots, and have marked trails that start from here. We also have a “mini zoo” with goats, rabbits, pigs, geese, ducks etc. The site has spaces for 130 caravans and campers, of which 100 are available yearround. There are boats that can be rented if you want to fish the Trollbuvatnet, as well as canoes and kayaks if you want to go on a river safari. There’s a ski slope with a 170m pulley next door, as well as well-maintained ski trails. The ski slope is open from January to April. Cabins can also be rented in the ski season. 11 cabins of various sizes are available. There is a waste disposal area for mobile home users. In the summer season the camping site is open June-September. The reception and kiosk is open from 09.00 to 22.00.

Laukvik in North Senja is shown on the map as having a particularly beautiful view. Our location gives you the perfect place from which to quickly get to good fishing spots on the open sea and in sheltered areas. We rent out two cabins and a house, all fully equipped with room for 6-8-9 people in each. Internet and TV with 50 channels are included. We have 9 boats ranging from 17â&#x20AC;&#x2122; with a 30 hp engine to 22â&#x20AC;&#x2122; with a 115 hp engine. Embrace Life & Vardnes urtegård

Vardnes urtegård’s speciality is medicinal herbs and berries. The farm’s 25 acres are mapped out and marked with wild and useful plant garden areas. As part of its product development program the farm is continuously trying out new berries, herbs and vegetables. Courses are held in several different languages. The farm offers rented accommodation in the form of a guest house and a cabin, and has its own shoreline and woods with spaces for caravans and campers, as well as being able to offer rooms suitable for courses and seminars for rent. Senja vandrerhjem / Skoghus Leirsted

Senja vandrerhjem was originally a camp owned and run by the Norwegian Lutheran Missionary Society (NLM). The camp has been in operation since 1947, and in 2005 it became of the Norwegian Youth Hostels scheme. We are located in a quiet and peaceful area, well screened from neighbours. Our latest accommodation section called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Villmarksstuaâ&#x20AC;? was opened in 1997. The standard of the rooms is good and they all have their own shower and WC. At Senjagården we rent out rooms and apartments for short term occupancy. We are located on the shores of the Gisundet at Gibostad. We can accommodate a total of 100 guests in single rooms, double rooms, triple rooms and family rooms with four beds. We are perfectly situated for you to take advantage of the various open air activities Senja has to offer. A short drive north and you’ll come to the fishing villages from where you can go deep sea fishing. If you go west you’ll come to the outer coast with its many small coastal communities where fishing has been the main-stay for generations. Slåttebakken Gård

Where good experiences are made Slåttebakken Gård is located 10 km from Finnsnes, on Senja. The farm overlooks the Gisundet and here you’ll find an old goat house called “FJØSN” which has been turned into a small eatery. In our kitchens we make local delicacies that go to our catering service and for sale in our shop. Amongst other products we make salami, which is one of our best items. We have also set up a mini centre of expertise in small scale food production. In addition we offer other activities such as fishing trips and paintball. We are particularly keen on maintaining old food traditions and using local produce. With our hand-made products we want to promote the concept of good food in good company. FROM COAST TO THE WILDEST WILDLIFE A network of paths takes you from weather-beaten coastal communities to friendly valleys and unspoiled wilderness. You really can experience quiet archipelagos and the wildest of wildlife in the same day. Norway’s second biggest island Senja is at the very edge of the sea. The National Tourist Route hugs its outer edge, giving you jagged peaks, welcoming bays and fishing villages. Meet the world’s biggest troll and his wife in the Senjatrollet theme park, then follow the National Tourist Route for 90 km from fjord to fjord through astonishingly different natural landscapes. See the Okshornan rock formation from Tungeneset and find out why the locals call it the Devil’s Jaw. Further south and inland, you reach Salangsdalen and the Polar Zoo. This unique park gives you a rare chance to get really close to bears, wolves, lynxes and arctic foxes. The culture island of Senja The island of Senja is an exciting destination for people interested in culture and history. Plot the culture destinations on your GPS and let it guide you round Senja. The artists in Central Troms have gathered together in one building in Øverbotn under the banner ArtSenja. You will find a gallery here featuring paintings, photographs and handicrafts by resident and guest artists. It’s well worth visiting and spending some time here. Senja can boast the world’s largest troll, the Senjatrollet, which is 17.96 m high. Experiences for young and old alike based on legends from the outer coast of Senja are offered inside the troll’s stomach. The Senjatrollet and Hulderheimen at Finnsæter in Senja offer something to interest the whole family. Senja has two beautiful old churches, in the village of Torsken and on the

island of Tranøya. We also have a museum in Finnsnes (in the same building as the tourist information office), the halibut museum in Skrolsvik and a museum in Mefjordvær. An old settlement featuring gamme (Sami turf huts) in the valley of Kaperdalen has an exciting history and is also well worth a visit. In addition to the traditional village days, which are certainly worth experiencing, three exciting festivals have emerged, offering top class experiences: The Senja Festival in Gryllefjord, the Kråkeslott Festival and ArtiJuli at the Kråkeslottet in Bøvær. This is a theme park for young and old alike, built on an old legend from the island of adventure Senja. It is the home of Senjatrollet, the world’s largest troll according to the Guiness Record Book in 1997. The theme park is one of the most visited places in Troms County. MISSION SENJA! One normally says that the landscape and fauna on Senja is a cross section of Norway. On the “inner coast” and in the south you’ll find sedate landscapes and marshes, pine trees and wooded slopes. When we traverse Senja to the north, the landscape rises up through the mountain birches, crosses rocky summits and bare peaks before it dives down to the open sea on the “outer coast”. The tree line is at about 300 meters above sea level. The mountains in north Senja are steep and majestic with fantastic views and provide the

basis for many hikes and rambles for both the well trained and the less well trained. Breitind is the highest mountain on Senja at 1010 meters. But we don’t just have Breitind we have lots of mountains that you can ascend, both in summer and in winter. Some are more demanding than others. Spend a day at sea onboard with fishermen from Gryllefjord, Torsken or Grunnfarnes out on the fishing grounds and experience first-hand what their life is really like. Here you can muster as crew and follow the fishermen first hand without, just like them, the possibility to return to shore until the day’s quota has been caught. An ordinary day can vary tremendously depending on the weather, but we can guarantee a rugged and salty experience. Included in the concept is doing some deep fishing using different tackle depending on the time of year.

As our guest you will play an active role onboard and put your fish gutting and cleaning skills to the test. You can take your best fillets with you and you’ll be given good instruction in the use of fishing gear. Different seasons offer different species: Cod, saithe, halibut, cusk, red fish, wolffish… you never know what the day will bring.

Welcome to the Senja Festival, August 1st to 4th in Gryllefjord. Here the focus is on music, art and cultural events, as well the fish dishes and the culinary traditions of Northern Norway. The Senja Festival is the hub for the arts in Senja and is run by clubs, societies, businesses, and voluntary organizations. The objective is to bring together resourceful people from all over Senja and from the rest of Norway and abroad. The Senja Festival has its roots in the local surroundings and is a continuance of the very popular, traditional Deep Sea Fishing Festival that has been held in Gryllefjord for more than 30 years. In the middle of the woods, in the middle of the island, you’ll find the arts centre ArtSenja, an oasis for art and culture. This is where 28 professional artists from the region get together and it is an arena where they can show their products and talents. In the gallery you can admire paintings, prints, photographs, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glass, etc. At the centre the Rimfrost Theatre Group also put on plays, as well as there being concerts and performance art. An idyllic little fishing village in the south side of Senja. «Gammelbutikken» (The Old Village Store), which is part of the Midt-Troms Museum, is open every day from 11 am to 6 pm from June 23rd to August 18th. Apart from what you can see in the museum, the Old Store which dates from 1870 serves coffee and tea, and sells gift items, handicrafts and locally made goods, old fashioned sweets and ice cream. The moderate ones are suitable for well-trained hikers, but many of them are also suitable for beginners and children. The demanding trips are for experienced hikers with good stamina

that can manage steep climbs and long trips high up. At the end point of each trip you’ll find a box with a trip code and guest book. You can register that you reached the end point by sending a text message, preferably while you are still at the end point. Alternatively you can register at www.TipåTopp.no/Lenvik or send in the registration card at the end of the season. Top of the Tops (Ti på Topp) participant packs cost NOK 150 and contain everything you need to know to get started. Here you’ll find maps with the paths marked on them as well as route descriptions and registration cards and details of how you register trips. Additional registration cards can be purchased for NOK 75.
