Winter has become the new summer. It is not without reason that research into the Northern Lights is based in Andenes. Along with activities connected with the Northern Lights, there is a varied winter program offered in Vesterålen. At the same time, Vesterålen is also experiencing a growth in tourism during the summer season. Nature-based activities are much sought after with whale safaris being most popular. The Arctic Race of Norway came to Vesterålen in 2013 and was a great success. Cycle tourism in the region is growing exponentially, and Vesterålen has become an attractive cycle destination. Early May to late August in Vesterålen is paradise for birdwatchers. Eagles can be seen all over the region throughout the year. Vesterålen consists of many islands that are ideal for boating, kayaking and diving. Vesterålen is also famous for spectacular hikes, including Dronningruta (The Queen’s Route) between Stø and Nyksund and the trip to Møysalen, the highest mountain in the region. SAS/Widerøe offer several flights daily from Bodø and Tromsø to the local airports at Andenes and Stokmarknes with connecting routes from cities including Oslo. The airport at Evenes is situated a couple of hours away and the Airport Express Bus makes it easy to travel in to the region. Norwegian and SAS offer cheap fares year-round. All the airports have several companies offering car hire. Climate

CLIMATE:

Typical for areas with a coastal climate, Vesterålen has relatively mild winters and moderately warm summers. In December and parts of January, the sun does not appear above the horizon in Vesterålen. The dark season is fascinating in many ways, and the northern lights and special bluish hues play magically on the snow-covered landscape. Conversely, the sun never dips below the horizon during the period of 23 May – 23 July. Recommended Outdoor Clothing, Summer: The weather in Vesterålen can be extremely changeable. Even though good, warm weather is forecast, wet and brisk intervals may occur. You should therefore bring along a windproof and water-resistant jacket and trousers. A thin hat or headband is a good idea for boat trips or mountain walks in case the weather gets a bit brisk. Bring thin gloves, too. They are good to have in case of chilly weather. Sturdy hiking boots also help to ensure a comfortable trip. Recommended Outdoor Clothing, Winter: Your inner layer of clothing should consist of textiles that absorb sweat and keep the skin dry. Avoid cotton against your skin. The next layer should insulate, like wool, fleece, or down, for instance. Your outer layer of clothing protects you against wind and rain. Wear a windproof and water-resistant jacket and trousers. Avoid cotton trousers or jeans underneath. On your head: Fleece or woollen hats retain your body heat. On your hands: Mittens are best because your fingers “share a room”. Fleece or wool underneath, windproof mittens on top. On your feet: Wool or fleece worn directly against the skin retain warmth and absorb moisture. Waterproof mountain boots are a good investment.

totally upgraded in 2016 We hope that we for season 2016/17 may wish you welcome to Sortland – center of beautiful Vesterålen. We have two hotels in town centre with a total of 87 rooms. Strand Hotell has 37 twin/double rooms and Sortland has 50 twin/double rooms. Dinner is served at Sortland Hotell. Distance between the hotels is only 300 meter! Sortland Hotell has refreshed and refurnished all the rooms! Cultural hotel in north – Sortland Hotell – is situated in the centre of Vesterålen and Sortland. The hotel was renovated January 2016. Our 50 rooms includes 4 suites,

all have flatscreen TV and original paintings. Famous Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen has his own library which has all of his novels and translations. In 1911/1912 Knut Hamsun (Nobel Price in Literature, 1920) stayed for months writing his famous book «Look back on happiness». Among other items our foaje has the door to his room No. 10!

Nyksund Ekspedisjonen Hotel Visit our new inn in the centre of Nyksund, or «Nyksund Downtown» as we like to call it. Nyksund is called the «town in the ocean» because of the concentration of buildings and the unique urban feeling you get on this tiny island, despite its exposure to the open sea. Nyksund Ekspedisjonen is a luxurious inn that lies on the quay, central in Nyksund´s historic harbour. The newly renovated rooms have ensuites, while the originally-restored bedrooms share a large bathroom and sauna. This building, forming the east side of Nyksund´s market square, built in the 1930´s, has been renovated in the past 10 to 12 years to retain its original features and provide the modern facilities of a high-quality inn. The accommodation is bright, warm and pleasant. The oldest rooms in the building feature the original wooden panelling from the time when Nyksund was a thriving fishing village.

Akvakultur in Vesterålen Visit a real fish farm and experience why Norwegian Salmon is the best in the world The salmon roe is only a few millimetres, and yet it is still big enough to create one of Norway’s most important industries. Spaceship Aurora

– a journey into the Northern Lights

Spaceship Aurora is a visitor, educational and activity center located at Andøya Space Center. At Andøya Space Center sounding rockets are launched into space several times a year doing research in space and on the auroa. Since 1962 we have launched over thousand rockets into space. This make Andøya Space Center the only operating Space Center in Europe. At Spaceship Aurora you can experience a virtual trip into space, learn to know the Northern Lights, how it effects on our planet, and how the Northern lights are reflected in Norwegian history and culture. You will take part in a virtual and exciting mission in the near space. Pilots, navigators, and scientists have to work together to solve the same scientific and engineering problems that meet real astronauts.

The Spaceship offers activities for all age groups. A Mission Commander will guide you and your group thru the Aurora mission. We can also offer fun souvenirs from our Space Shop. Ekspedisjonen seafood restaurant Welcome to our famous seafood restaurant. Our menu is based on the seasons´ best local ingredients. Our most popular meals are made of fantastic fresh fish that we source daily from the local catch. These include halibut, monkfish, catfish and cod. We also serve dishes made with traditional dried cod, klippfish and semi dried cod. Fresh clamshell, king crab and sea crayfish are some of the delicacies on our seafood platter that many of our guests especially enjoy. Vestrålen is not only known for fish though. The lamb on our menu grazes the island´s hills in the summer. The restaurant´s position on the quay gives our guests a view out to the open ocean. The dining space is simple, bright and inviting. Vertsbrygga This traditional house is one of the eldest buildings in Nyksund. A restaurant and a nice little bar are located here in what used to be the old general store for Nyksund.
