We have selected our favourite mountain lakes in our area.

We have divided them into three categories: fishing lakes, fishing lakes with boat rental and fishing lakes with boat rental and cabins.

Fishing with rods and hand-held lines is permitted at all these lakes. Good fishing!

Ness and the Seven Tidal Currents

Lule Sami Centre. Museum, sale of Sami handicrafts, guiding/narration about Sami culture and society. Coastal Sami culture, dress traditions, silver and Sami magic drum.

Mt. Stetind (1392 m a.s.l.) rises vertically from the sea. A distinctive navigational beacon for seafarers and a Sami holy mountain, Stetind is today a popular hiking destination.

The Knut Hamsun Centre is a national centre for author and Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun (1859-1952). Designed by award-winning architect Steven Holl.

One of Europe’s largest coastal fortifications from World War II. One of the bunkers has been converted into a museum. The entire fortification area may be experienced on foot.

The house where the author Knut Hamsun grew up. A museum featuring artefacts related to Hamsun and his family.

The historic trading post dates from 1845. Exhibition: “Sigfred and Ragnar and the Seven Tidal Currents” (Husøyvær). Barn nisse exhibition in the farm’s barn. Museum shop and café.

Galleries, spa and places to stay and eat. Knut Hamsun was a young clerk at trader Walsøe’s company. Short distance to Tranøy Lighthouse offering accommodation and dining.

Rock carvings of the outline of two full size reindeer.

One of the richest archaeological areas in Northern Norway. Ancient monuments on the island of Engeløya dating from the Iron Age and Viking Era.

The Hamarøy War Memorial Museum portrays war memorials linked to the war period 1940-45, with focus on the local and distinctive war history.

Steigen Folk Museum

Steigen Coastal Museum Nordskot

Trips on the open sea and in the fjords of Salten on the veteran boats Bolga and Blomøy. Fishing, beach forays, day trips or longer trips with accommodation.

Rørstad Church dates from 1761 and is a listed building. Settlement of Rørstad dates back to the Iron Age. In 1732 Swedish botanist Carl von Linne paid a visit.

A doctor’s residence dating from 1877, and the lady of the house’s café. Walk past the vicarage and garden to Steigen Folk Museum, and explore several centuries of Engeløya’s history.

The coastal society’s wharf building with exhibitions of boats, motors, fishing, catching, handicrafts and home articles. Open from July 1.

Stella Maris at Skutvik is one of the artworks placed in the Nordland landscape.

International artists have each built a sculpture in 32 host municipalities.

At the foot of this distinctive mountain, the author Knut Hamsun sat and wrote the Nobel prize-winning novel Growth of the Soil. The mountain may be climbed from the eastern side.

Museum Nord – Kjøpsvik

Rock art from the Stone Age of life-size representations of moose, reindeer, bear and killer whales, using a technique that only exists in North Nordland.

The museum in an historic 17th century trading post with exhibitions portraying the history of trade, communication and the fishing industry.

The development from faming society to industrial society. Kjøpsvik is characterized by the 90-year history of the Nordland Portland Cementfabrik (now Norcem).

Galleries

Steigen Sagaspill is a festival arranged in late July every second year. The highlight is the play about the loving couple Hagbard and Signe, which stages the imaginary Viking community of Steig.

Kjelvik Day is a family event featuring demonstrations of old handicraft techniques and the preparation and sale of traditional food products.

The Hamsun Days is arranged in Hamarøy every second year around the time of the author’s birthday on August 4.

It is Norway’s largest and most high profile Hamsun event and 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the literature festival.
