ARCHIPELAGO LIFE AND CITY CHARM

Come and be charmed by the contrasts in Bodø and Salten, with everything from festivals and concerts to hiking trails, caves and glaciers, as well as Saltstraumen, the strongest tidal current in the world, only half an hour from the buzz of the city. Only 90 minutes by plane from Oslo, between the archipelago and the peaks of Børvass tinder, the coastal town of Bodø is a natural communications hub and the perfect base from which to explore the region. The town also has gourmet restaurants, a water park, cafés and shopping centres, as well as numerous festivals, including the Nordland Music Festival, with concerts in a beautiful outdoor setting. This is a region where you can get up close to natural phenomena. Don’t miss Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest t idal current. Experience its force close up, as an observer on land or with a local boat guide. It’s also fantastic for recreational fishermen. Salten’s other natural phenomena include caves, glaciers and the Northern Lights. Half an hour’s drive north of Bodø, step into the atmosphere of the 19th century on historic Kjerringøy. The old trading post is the best-preserved in Norway, famous from films based on the novels of Knut Hamsun, and is still bustling with shops, cheese production and restaurants. In the Realm of Hamsun in the Hamsun Centre, you can learn all about Nobel Prize-winner Knut Hamsun’s life and works, and on Tranøy, you can enjoy open-air art installations against the panoramic backdrop of the Lofoten Wall.

Musikalske Utsikter (Musical Views) Musikalske Utsikter is an app-based experience where two of Bodø’s top attractions, nature and music, are presented in a new and exciting way. Musicians from Bodø were invited to write music for different view points in and around Bodø. This music will then be added to an app that will also feature walking routes, information about the places and the artists, sharing on social media, etc. What makes this app special is that the music can only be activated when you are at the actual geographical place. This means that you have to go to Keiservarden to hear the work of Bjørn Andor Drage, to Mjelle to listen to Kråkesølv, to the pier to hear the music of Tore Johansen and right up to the summit of Per Karlsatind to hear the music of Susanne Lundeng.

FOOD AND DRINK Bodø and the Salten region are experiencing a period of growth, a fact which is also reflected in restaurant circles and with local manufacturers. Locally roasted coffee, salt from the Saltstraumen, cheese from Kjerringøy and beer from the city’s microbrewery are just some of the things you will find here. Bodø’s night life offers everything from small, intimate pubs with local beers, to pulsating dance floors open till the early hours of the morning. A beer served outside in the light of the midnight sun is something you just have to experience.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS Have you ever been outdoors on a winter night in Northern Norway? Then you may have witnessed the most amazing light phenomenon nature has to offer. The northern lights (Aurora Borealis) is at its most intense far north in the northern hemisphere. Like a feather-light silky veil, the improvised choreography of green, yellow, red and pink cosmic light flickers across the sky. You have to have been there to understand.

www.visitbodo.com

©

TERJE RAKKE

ROGER JOHANSEN

The northern lights can be seen on clear, dark evenings from September to April. In Bodø, beneath the auroral oval, a band of light circling the geometric poles, you have the best opportunity of seeing these colourful northern lights in action. They will often begin quite faintly in the far north, moving higher up in the sky as the night goes on.

ACTIVITIES MJELLE “You have to have been there to understand,” sings local folk singer, Terje Nilsen, describing Mjelle in a song. The beaches at Mjelle attract people throughout the summer and are extremely popular for outings at weekends and on fine summer evenings. The children will have enough to do gathering seashells and building sand castles, and ball games in the sand are popular among older visitors. For barbecues you are recommended to bring firewood or cooking gear. Bus nr. 400.

BODØMARKA In Bodømarka you can walk along and exercise on 35 km of floodlit trails, summer and winter, or on the many footpaths near the housing areas. Bodømarka is also well-suited for a number of other activities such as horseback riding, horse and carriage riding, trotting, shooting, orienteering, air sports and water sports.

BESTEMORENGA LEISURE PARK Skiing stadium and slopes, model aircraft facility, trotting course and shooting range. 30 km of groomed floodlit trails. National championships arena. Bodø Østre Marksman’s Society (Skytterlag) runs a modern shooting range which was completed for the National Marksman’s Meeting in 1991. Electronic targets at both 100 m and 200 m range.

FISHING Bring your fishing rod along and feel the cod and saithe bite, either at Saltstraumen or on the rocks just outside of Bodø. S everal companies offer deep-sea fishing trips on boats a llowing you to go for the really big ones. Or you may like to make your way up to a quiet trout lake or an exciting salmon river like the Beiarelva. You are practically guaranteed a catch, summer or winter.

VIEWPOINTS Mount Rønvikfjellet (164 m asl) is an excellent vantage point for viewing the city of Bodø and the midnight sun (2 June – 10 July) as well as the Lofoten Islands and Landegode to the north and the Børvastindene peaks to the south. You can drive all the way up, too. Approx. 3 km from the city centre. You can also go half way by bus, on the No. 3 to Vollen. Bus nr. 3. Mount Keiservarden – This is Bodø’s most versatile mountaintop. Named after Kaiser Wilhelm II, who visited the mountain in 1889, Mount Keiservarden has become a cherished destination for walkers due to its close vicinity to the city and its magnificent view. Keiser varden is visited by cyclists, hikers and paragliders and is also popular as a concert venue.

BATHING SPOTS Popular seaside destinations on warm, sunny days include Geitvågen, Ausvika and Mjelle, all of which are north of Bodø. Soløyvannet lake outside Bodø, and Ursetvika in Misværfjorden are also popular bathing spots. There are also a number of excellent beaches along the Coastal Route. Sandvika beach on the island of Sandhornøya is simply gorgeous.

LANDEGO LIGHTHOUSE The island of Landego is just off the coast of Bodø and is a beautiful natural gem whether bathed in the light of the midnight sun in the summer, or when the Northern Lights add lustre to the island in winter. In this island realm we find the world’s densest stock of white-tailed eagles, and this magnificent bird is a wonderful sight as it takes off from its nest and soars down towards the fjord in search of fish. Landego lighthouse was built in 1910 to secure the seaward approach to Bodø from Lofoten. Today it has been automated and is still fully operational. It is possible to spend the night at the lighthouse keeper’s or assistant’s residences. The lighthouse is a mere one hour’s boat ride away from Bodø harbour. Further details: www.skagen-hotel.no

BODØ – CITY OF THE SEA EAGLE Bodø is home to the world’s densest stock of white-tailed eagles and the only Sea Eagle Club in the world. You will not find a better guarantee for a meeting with these magnificent birds of prey. You can capture the eagle’s gaze here all year round. Vigilant, perched on high, king of the hill, ruler of all birds, soaring on wings outstretched high in the air, the white-tailed eagle is a sight for sore eyes! Read more at www.havornklubben.no

THE COASTAL ROUTE Along the coast from Bodø to Steinkjer, you can see attractions like Saltstraumen, the Svartisen glacier, the Seven S isters, Mount Torghatten and Leka. The Coastal Route offers a diversity of countryside, charming communities and beautiful sheltered beaches. There are also rivers and fishing lakes, excellent hiking terrain and pleasant picnic spots. Lots of scope for sea fishing and trips out to the islands along the beautiful coastline (like Sørarnøy, Lovund, Træna, Dønna and Vega). NYHOLMS SKANDSE The fortifications on the isle of Nyholmen were erected during the war of 180714 to protect the factory and settlement on Hundholmen, which was later to become the town of Bodø, against attacks by the English warships blockading the Norwegian coast. The construction of Nyholms Skandse was planned and directed by Captain Friis of the Engineers and completed in 1810. The Fort was armed with 4 twelve-pound and 8 eight-pound cannons. It had a garrison of as many as 150 men, mainly local conscripts. The officers, orderlies, and some of the soldiers came from regiments in Trondheim. Nyholms Skandse has now been restored in accordance with the original plans drawn up by Captain Friis of the Engineers, a task that required over 5 years of energetic voluntary work. The Nyholmen area, including the fortifications, was the City of Bodø’s millennium site.

BREMNES FORT After the bombing of Bodø during World War II, the Germans built this fortress to guard the seaward approach to Bodø. Excellent area for fishing and the outdoor life. A walk up the path to the top of Bremnes is rewarded by a magnificent view of the scenic island of Landegode and the midnight sun (2 June to 10 July). Located approx. 7 km north of Bodø. THE CULTURE ROUTE RV 812 – MISVÆR / SKJERSTAD The Culture Route, Rv 812, cuts through narrow valleys, across mountains and through scenic coastal countryside. Past and present are found side by side. Cultural monuments abound, including burial mounds, ruins and other traces of settlement dating thousands of years back in time. People have made a living here on what nature has to offer. This is how traditions are made. The road passes unobtrusive and often unpainted Pite-Sámi farmsteads set against the mountains in the south, fisherman-farmer smallholdings along the fjord and stately skipper’s residences at Ljønes and in B reivik. ARCTIC CABINS

Just over an hour’s drive from Bodø Airport you will find Arctic Cabins – overnight accommodation in cosy, well-equipped cabins. The perfect location for those seeking nature adventures and activities. 01.01 > 31.12 -

WELCOME TO SALTSTRAUMEN Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom. Sea fishing, sea eagle safaris and historical adventures in the world’s strongest tidal current. See one of the wonders of the world at close quarters, as an onlooker on the shore, or in a boat with a local guide. The phenomenon occurs every 6 hours when almost 400 million cubic metres of water pass through the 3 km long and 150 metre wide strait between the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord at speeds of up to 20 knots. If you stay in Saltstraumen, we guarantee you a visit that will be hard to forget. Tide tables are available at www.visitbodo.com

ANCIENT MONUMENTS NEAR SALTSTRAUMEN Many legends and myths, some of them thousands of years old, have originated from the area near the Saltstraumen current. Best-known is the brutal saga of Raud the Strong and the Viking King Olav Tryggvason’s campaign to convert Norway to Christianity. The earliest known traces of human settlement date back 10 000 years, and the reason why people lived by the Saltenfjord was the unusually abundant stocks of fish and seabirds found there. The burial mounds found at Saltstraumen highlight 36

the importance of travel through the strait during the Iron Age. For the same reason many military installations were built along the Saltstraumen strait during World War II. Man has always been able to harvest sustenance in Saltstraumen. Even though the surroundings have changed in character, practically everything below the surface has remained unchanged. In spite of 10,000 years of struggle against ever more ingenious fi shing gear, the fish are still just as eager to bite today. At Tuv, Straum and Ripnes you can wander along well-marked trails among unique ancient monuments.

VÆRAN - BODØ’S ISLES AND SKERRIES Just off Bodø we find “Væran”, a unique group of isles and skerries that are accessible all year round. Like a miniature version of the Nordland coast, Væran is perfect for island hopping, sailing and kayaking. This remarkable landscape consists of several hundred isles, rocks and skerries. Helligvær alone consists of 365 islands, one for every day of the year. From the quay in Bodø city centre, daily fast passenger boats will take you quickly out to a part of the world’s most beautiful coastline where you can practically feel that time stands still.

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Bodø and Salten can boast the greatest number of annual hours of daylight in the world. Even though the area is north of the arctic circle, and there is midnight sun in the summer, there is no polar night here because of the tilt of the Earth, and the area therefore enjoys magical light conditions, in addition to the northern lights, throughout the winter. This is why Salten has acted like a magnet on artists. They come here in search of the enchanting daylight conditions. Bodø by Light.
