“You have to have been there to understand,” sings local folk singer, Terje Nilsen, describing Mjelle in a song. The beaches at Mjelle attract people throughout the summer and are extremely popular for outings at weekends and on fine summer evenings. The children will have enough to do gathering seashells and building sand castles, and ball games in the sand are popular among older visitors. For barbecues you are recommended to bring firewood or cooking gear.

Mount Rønvikfjellet (164 m asl) is an excellent vantage point for viewing the city of Bodø and the midnight sun (2 June – 10 July) as well as the Lofoten Islands and Landegode to the north and the Børvastindene peaks to the south. You can drive all the way up, too. Approx. 3 km from the city centre. You can also go half way by bus, on the No. 3 to Vollen.

BODØMARKA In Bodømarka you can walk along and exercise on 35 km of floodlit trails, summer and winter, or on the many footpaths near the housing areas. Bodømarka is also well-suited for a number of other activities such as horseback riding, horse and carriage riding, trotting, shooting, orienteering, air sports and water sports.

Bodø Østre Marksman’s Society (Skytterlag) runs a modern shooting range which was completed for the National Marksman’s Meeting in 1991. Electronic targets at both 100 m and 200 m range.

FISHING Bring your fishing rod along and feel the cod and saithe bite, either at Saltstraumen or on the rocks just outside of Bodø. Several companies offer deep-sea fishing trips on boats allowing you to go for the really big ones. Or you may like to make your way up to a quiet trout lake or an exciting salmon river like the Beiarelva. You are practically guaranteed a catch, summer or winter.

Mount Keiservarden – This is Bodø’s most versatile mountaintop. Named after Kaiser Wilhelm II, who visited the mountain in 1889, Mount Keiservarden has become a cherished destination for walkers due to its close vicinity to the city and its magnificent view. Keiservarden is visited by cyclists, hikers and paragliders and is also popular as a concert venue. Top 13 – The bar of Radisson Blu Hotel Bodø offers a impressive view of the Bodø peninsula, the midnight sun, the island of Landegode and the Børvasstindene peaks. From the top of the control tower at the Norwegian Aviation Museum you have a panoramic view of much of the Bodø peninsula.

BATHING SPOTS Popular seaside destinations on warm, sunny days include Geitvågen, Ausvika and Mjelle, all of which are north of Bodø. Soløyvannet lake outside Bodø, and Ursetvika in Misværfjorden are also popular bathing spots. There are also a number of excellent beaches along the Coastal Route. Sandvika beach on the island of Sandhornøya is simply gorgeous.

DID YOU KNOW THAT... The view from Mount Rønvikfjellet overlooking Landegode, with the midnight sun in the background, is one of Norway’s most widely used motifs of all time.

WALKS In and around Bodø you will find a wealth of e asily accessible hiking terrain. Below are just a few suggestions for walks, there are many, many more. The project known as STImuli offers hike cards for walks of varying duration in and around Bodø, which are available at Bodø Tourist Information Centre. BODØSJØEN This is a very popular area for excursions. Bodøsjøen outdoor museum, the mediaeval Bodin Church and the Nordland Culture Centre are just some of the many cultural treasures found in the area. From Bodøsjøen, you can follow the nature trail along the Bodøelva River up to the Maskinisten area and the countryside known as Bodømarka. Sturdy footwear and some preparation are advisable.

THE CITY CENTRE AREA The inner harbour is lively in summer, full of fishing and pleasure boats, and visitors and locals alike can enjoy fresh prawns on the quayside. Wander along the harbour promenade and feel the hustle and bustle of city life in Bodø. Our most distinctive

shopping precinct is the Glasshuset arcade, a glass-roofed area of Storgata which houses a wide variety of shops with long opening hours.

NYHOLMS SKANDSE If you have the time, a walk to the fortifications is Nyholms Skandse well worth your while. The walk takes 45-60 min. In addition to viewing the fort, the old, listed lighthouse, Nyholmen Fyr, is worth a closer look. The area is ideal for a picnic. Enjoy your food while watching the ship traffic to and from Bodø.

SALTSTRAUMEN In the vicinity of the Saltstraumen Bridge, picnic spots, barbecue areas and footpaths merge harmoniously with the surrounding countryside. The paths are suitable for the physically disabled. There are also marked culture trails where you can see remnants of Stone Age dwellings and graves.

Mountainous Bodø municipality offers wonderful wilderness opportunities. There are 120 peaks above 700 m in height, and 30 peaks that tower more than 1000 m. You can choose between easy walks and demanding rock climbing. The list below describes some of the most popular mountaintops. ATTRACTIONS LANDEGO LIGHTHOUSE The island of Landego is just off the coast of Bodø and is a beautiful natural gem whether bathed in the light of the midnight sun in the summer, or when the Northern Lights add lustre to the island in winter. In this island realm we find the world’s densest stock of white-tailed eagles, and this magnificent bird is a wonderful sight as it takes off from its nest and soars down towards the fjord in search of fish. Landego lighthouse was built in 1910 to secure the seaward approach to Bodø from Lofoten. Today it has been automated and is still fully operational. It is possible to spend the night at the lighthouse keeper’s or assistant’s residences. The lighthouse is a mere one hour’s boat ride away from Bodø harbour. Further details: www.skagen-hotel.no.

BODØ – CITY OF THE SEA EAGLE Bodø is home to the world’s densest stock of white-tailed eagles and the only Sea Eagle Club in the world. You will not find a better guarantee for a meeting with these magnificent birds of prey. You can capture the eagle’s gaze here all year round. THE COASTAL ROUTE Along the coast from Bodø to Steinkjer, you can see attractions like Saltstraumen, the Svartisen glacier, the Seven Sisters, Mount Torghatten and Leka. The Coastal Route offers a diversity of countryside, charming communities and beautiful sheltered beaches. There are also rivers and fishing lakes, excellent hiking terrain and pleasant picnic spots. Lots of scope for sea fishing and trips out to the islands along the beautiful coastline (like Sørarnøy, Lovund, Træna, Dønna and Vega). NYHOLMS SKANDSE The fortifications on the isle of Nyholmen were erected during the war of 1807-14 to protect the factory and settlement on Hundholmen, which was later to become the town of Bodø, against attacks by the English warships blockading the Norwegian coast. The construction of Nyholms Skandse was planned and directed by Captain Friis of the Engineers and completed in 1810. The Fort was armed with 4 twelvepound and 8 eight-pound cannons. It had a garrison of as many as 150 men, mainly local conscripts. The officers, orderlies, and some of the soldiers came from regiments in Trondheim. Nyholms Skandse has now been restored in accordance with the original plans drawn up by Captain Friis of the Engineers, a task that required over 5 years of energetic voluntary work. The Nyholmen area, including the fortifications, was the City of Bodø’s millennium site..

BREMNES FORT After the bombing of Bodø during World War II, the Germans built this fortress to guard the seaward approach to Bodø. Excellent area for fishing and the outdoor life. A walk up the path to the top of Bremnes is rewarded by a magnificent view of the scenic island of Landegode and the midnight sun (2 June to 10 July). Located approx. 7 km north of Bodø. NORDLAND MUSEUM, NO. 116, PRINSENSGATE The Nordland Museum is housed in one of the oldest buil dings in Bodø city centre (built in 1903). Come inside and see the exhibition “Our city”, which provides insight into the history of the city from 1816 and up to the present day. The museum can also boast of a 1000 year old silver treasure and exhibitions about Sámi culture in Salten. LØP GÅRD FARM Time-honoured farm – proud traditions. The farm is situated on the road to Kjerringøy (the Fv 834), approximately 6 miles north of the city of Bodø. The farm buildings are several hundred years old and were formerly the residences of a senior state official and a skipper. During the summer there is a cafe in the old, idyllic main building. It is also possible to join a guided tour. Interesting Iron Age monuments are found in the vicinity. Season: 2 June - 26 August. Fri.-Sun.: 11:00-17:00. BODØSJØEN, THE OPEN AIR DEPARTMENT OF THE NORDLAND MUSEUM The museum is a popular spot for outings among the people of Bodø. The grounds were purchased by the Nordland Museum in 1938 and all the buildings there have been relocated from various other places in Nordland. In the boathouses we find the Nordland Museum’s boat collection. The big grey boathouse houses the country’s only genuine Nordland Jekt, the ”Anna Karoline”. She was built in 1876 and brought ashore here in Bodøsjøen in 1959. The ”jekt” were cargo vessels used to carry stockfish and other goods to Bergen for over 400 years. KJERRINGØY CHURCH

Bodø cathedral was completed in 1956. A 12 metre stained glass window, 10 tapestries from Nordland, and a rose window decorate the beautiful interior. The cathedral is built as a b asilica in the Gothic style. It was designed by the architects Blakstad & Munthe Kaas and was one of the first churches in Norway to have a d etached steeple. The cathedral is open Tue-Fri 12.00pm3.00am from mid June to end of August. Free admission..

The new Kjerringøy church was consecrated in 1883. The f urnishings are a mix of old and new. The oldest furnishings are from the 1600s. In the portal there is a large collection box and two sacrificial wall plaques. The smaller plaque bears the date 1730. Inside the church there is a collection bowl from 1760 which was used for the collection. Especially treasured is the blackboard next to the pulpit, which bears the date 1601 and was restored by Oscar Bodøgaard in 1974. Christian Bø painted the altar piece in 1885.. BODIN CHURCH The church is 3 km from the town centre and was built around 1240. The aisle was added in 1784, and the Renaissance p ulpit dates back to 1650. One of the real treasures of the church is the original baroque altar piece from 1670, which portrays Biblical persons and events. The church received a new organ in 2003. Free admission. Service every Sunday at 11 am. Open: late June – mid August, Tues–Fri 10am–3pm.

ST. EYSTEIN’S CATHOLIC CHURCH The church is about 400 metres from Bodø Airport. This is a modern church from 1983 that accommodates 150 persons. The church has a beautiful altar made of marble from the local quarry at Fauske, beautiful stained glass windows, furnishings decorated with wood carvings, and an excellent organ. About 250 Catholics of many different nationalities live in Bodø. The priest lives in the vicarage just behind the church. A Catholic school is located adjacent to the church. The church is open daily, during the daytime. Mass is held every Sunday at 11am, as well as Wednesdays and Fridays at 7pm. Tel.: +47 75 52 17 83. On Thursdays at 7 pm and Saturdays at 9 am, Mass is held at the chapel of the convent of the Dominican Sisters, situated some 50 m behind the church. RØNVIK CHURCH This church, built in 1997, was designed by Reidar Berg. The interior is round, while the roof and ceiling are cruciform, opening the circle in the four directions of the compass. The alter piece is made of glass, and over the stone baptism font p laced in the very centre of the church hangs a glass sculpture by Gunnar Torvund. The candlesticks and processional cross are made of glass as well. A new organ produced by Ryde & Berge was installed in 2002. The font is made of natural stone from Gildeskål. SALTSTRAUMEN CHURCH The church was originally built in 1886 by Eliseus Hansen. However, because of poor foundations it was dismantled in 1903 and moved to its present location. The church contains 4 s tained glass windows by Borger Hauglid, and a font made of local Fauske marble which dates from 1953. The two church bells are from 1885. The pulpit and altar area are said to have been created by Kristian Nilsen from Fjell and Kristian Jakobsen from Kodvåg. The altar piece was painted and gilded by Theodor Madsen. The organ was built in Norway in 1967 and has 16 voices. Its front is from the church’s original organ built in 1904.

SKJERSTAD CHURCH The church is situated on a hill with a view of the surrounding area. There has probably been a church at the site for the last 1000 years. Today’s church is built in a mediaeval style, designed by architect Arnstein Arneberg, and consecrated in 1959. The nave of the church seats 450 persons. Nearby the church there are tombstones that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, some of the oldest in Northern Norway. There is also a copy of a mediaeval cross with equidistant arms, the only one of its kind found north of Ålesund. Turnoff at RV812, 6 km.

MISVÆR CHURCH The church, located near trunk road Rv812 in Misvær, was consecrated in 1912. It is a simple yet beautiful wooden church, built as a joint effort by the local people. The altarpiece is painted by Ola Abrahamsen. Just 1 km away you find Korshuset at Mohus, a 400 year old storehouse in which the interior is decorated with acanthus leaves. Until the 18th century it was used for religious meetings during the winter.

ANCIENT MONUMENTS NEAR SALTSTRAUMEN Many legends and myths, some of them thousands of years old, have originated from the area near the Saltstraumen current. Best-known is the brutal saga of Raud the Strong and the Viking King Olav Tryggvason’s campaign to convert Norway to Christianity. The earliest known traces of human settlement

date back 10 000 years, and the reason why people lived by the Saltenfjord was the unusually abundant stocks of fish and seabirds found there. The burial mounds found at Saltstraumen highlight the importance of travel through the strait during the Iron Age. For the same reason many military installations were built along the Saltstraumen strait during World War II. Man has always been able to harvest sustenance in Saltstraumen. Even though the surroundings have changed in character, practically everything below the surface has remained unchanged. In spite of 10,000 years of struggle against ever more ingenious f ishing gear, the fish are still just as eager to bite today. The municipal centre consists in Fauske town. Here lives a majority of the population. Valnesfjord to the west and Sulitjelma to the east make up the two other population centres of the municipality. Fauske has a long history and tradition as a mining community. For more than 100 years, copper was mined in Sulitjelma – the cradle of Norwegian trade unions can be found here. In Valnesfjord too, there were for a period iron mining activities. There are various marble quarries in the municipality. The best renowned marble is called Norwegian Rose and can among other places be found in the UN headquarters in New York. There are two national parks within the municipal boundries: Sjunkhatten national park (Valnesfjord) and Junkerdal national park (Sulitjelma). Some of Norway´s largest limestone caves can be found a few kilometres outside of Fauske town. The town centre has a lovely seaside promenade and near its starting point you find the municipality´s contribution to Art-Scape Nordland. At Nes in Valnesfjord several Viking graves can be visited. There are remnants of previous human activity of historical value all over the municipality, which has been populated since the stoneage. A nice way to discover Fauske is by foot. In the leaflet ”Stier med historie” (Norw/Eng) you find several suggestions for different foot-hikes that easily can be made in and around Fauske. You may not visit the inner parts of Salten without tasting “møsbrømlefse”. This “lefse” you only find in Fauske and its neighbouring municipalities. Originally it was eaten as a dinner meal – and many still do so – but today many also think the warm “lefse” filled with a mixture of syrup, sour cream, smelted butter and “møsbrøm” is more like a dessert. A variation is “kjøttlefse” (with a meat filling). In Fauske you may buy “møsbrømlefse” in places like the café at Sulitjelma Turistsenter and every Sunday in summer at “Folkets hus” Sjønstå.

Rago National Park (established in 1971) is a small park with a varied, undulating landscape bordering on Sweden and the Padjelanta National Park. Sjunkhatten National Park / The Children’s National Park (established 2009/2010) is a magnificent coastal alpine landscape that can be enjoyed either on foot or by boat from the sea. Làhku National Park (established 2012) is located southern part of the Sundfjordfjellet mountains and a surface area of 188 km2. Approximately 70% of the in the borough of Gildeskål, the rest is in Meløy and

Junkerdal National Park (established in 2004) is particularly well known for its abundant flora. One of the entrances to the park is found near the Nordland National Park Centre in Saltdal and is easily accessible to visitors.

Norway’s biggest alpine karst landscape, encompassed by mountain peaks and glaciers, makes a magnificent impression. A common denominator for all of these parks is that they are accessible to hikers due to a network of hiking trails and a variety of overnight accommodations.

Bodø is only a short distance away from several national parks. The biggest, Saltfjellet-Svartisen (established in 1989), is full of contrast and stretches from northern Scandinavia’s biggest glacier, Svartisen (370 km2) in the west, to open mountain valleys in the east.

ALONG THE COASTAL HERITAGE ROAD TO THE CITY OF CULTURE BLIKSVÆR - THE REALM OF HAMSUN - STETIND - TRONDENES - HARSTAD Summer or winter, Bodø never stops. A BRIEF HISTORY OF BODØ The massive herring fisheries turned Bodø’s urban community upside down in the 1860s, with people flocking to the city. Bodø was razed to the ground by German bombers in 1940. Most of the city was reduced to rubble in just two and a half hours, and rebuilt in the course of a few post-war years. PRIOR TO THE BOMBING IN 1940 The idea of a market town in Nordland was by no means new, and work on realising the project had been going on for several years, with the first Bishop of the Nordlandene, Mathias Bonsak Krogh, as the most prominent driving force. From a population of 55 (!) male inhabitants in 1816, the town grew very slowly until the mid 1860s. Then the big herring fisheries turned Bodø’s urban community upside down. Up until 1874 enormous amounts of big herring were caught and sold at incredibly good prices. When the big herring disappeared, the subsequent fat herring fisheries ensured continued economic growth. People flocked to the town and in 1875 the population had reached 1,478. Ten years later it was no less than 2,695.

BODØ RAZED TO THE GROUND BY GERMAN BOMBERS - AND REBUILT IN JUST A FEW YEARS On 27 May 1940, Bodø was razed to the ground by German bombers. In just two and a half hours, most of the city had been reduced to rubble, and over 400 of the city’s 600 buildings had been completely destroyed. In just a few post-war years, how ever, Bodø was reconstructed. Not only was the city completely changed, it also underwent a process of rapid development and growth which makes it natural to consider reconstruction as a watershed in a broader sense, too.

COUNTY CENTRE Bodø gradually became the county metropolis. In 1968 the borough of Bodø merged with the borough of Bodin, which had already incorporated Kjerringøy in 1964. At the same time, this centre of settlement on the north-western side of the Bodø peninsula, with a population of 14,000, expanded from covering an area of 2.2 km2 to one of 920 km2. This ”new” Borough of Bodø had a population of no less than 27,575. A ”big city” by North Norwegian standards. On 1 January 2005, the former borough of Skjerstad was incorporated into the borough of Bodø and with that the population grew to over 44,000.

BODØ AS HOSTING AUTHORITY Bodø hosts over 30 state concerns and offices, the biggest being the County Governor’s office, Defence Command North Norway, Bodø Military Airport and the University of Nordland. Bodø also houses the Nordland County Council administration. Bodø has gradually developed into a modern service and communications centre. It is a city characterised by educational institutions (over 4,500 students), the Armed Forces, health services and trade, and not least transport, travel and tourism.

INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION Bodø has twice been the centre of international attention: The first time was in 1818 in connection with the ”Bodø Affair” which was to prove so humiliating for the Norway/Sweden Union. A smuggling incident caused diplomatic complications with England and ended with the Union having to pay a substantial fine. On 1 May 1960, Bodø was once again to steal the news agencies’ headlines when an American U-2 spy plane bound for Bodø was shot down over Soviet territory, putting world peace in jeopardy for a time.
