Destination Harstad

Welcome to Destination Harstad - Where adventures abound! Harstad is situated at the heart of Northern Norway, at the gateway to the Vesterålen and Lofoten islands. This is a region that offers unforgettable adventures in nature – accessible and mighty mountain landscapes, spectacular views and a unique archipelago. This is an area in which you can find a quiet place for yourself, drink clean water straight from trickling rivers, or go fishing at sea or in one of the many mountain lakes. This brochure gives an insight into the many attractions and activities available in the area. Harstad, with its 23,640 inhabitants, has always been, and still is, an important centre of commerce and culture in the north. Harstad lies at the centre of an exciting region; Kvæfjord with its worldfamous strawberries, and “Nupen”, voted the most romantic place in Norway from which to observe the midnight sun. Bjarkøy, the seat of the Viking chief Tore Hund, boasts an impressive archipelago, a bird cliff and white-tailed eagles. The areas adjacent to the airport further south, Tjeldsund and Skånland, are known for their many mountain walks, white sandy beaches and beautiful fjords. Skånland even has its own beach for winter bathing. You will also find old Sami settlements here and a cultural landscape that bears witness to settlements thousands of years old. Visit us at the tourist office for further information.

Welcome!

Our 5 municipalities offer experiences you will never forget. We call them unforgettable adventures.

Harstad municipality Harstad – The City of Culture in the North Population: 24,205 Area: 364 km2 • www.harstad.kommune.no • postmottak@harstad.kommune.no

Harstad is situated on Hinnøya, the largest island in Norway. It is the third largest town in northern Norway, and an important centre of commerce for the whole region. The paved market square in the town centre is only a short walk from shops and cafés. Harstad is known for its high quality restaurants and cultural events throughout the year. Several festivals are arranged, such as Bakgården, Ilios, and a Northern Norwegian Beer Festival. The annual North Norwegian Festival of Culture takes place in the last week in June, when the streets are teeming with

people and music is played in pubs, churches and concert halls. The coastal steamers arrive at the town centre pier every morning and the express boat heads north to Senja and Tromsø. Harstad is generally sheltered from rain and wind. Forests, mountains, fjords, islands and miles of hiking trails entice you to embark upon unforgettable experiences in nature all year round.

Skånland municipality Population: 2,954. Area: 465 km2 • www.skanland.kommune.no • post@skanland.kommune.no Skånland offers spectacular nature and a choice of activities and adventures on land, at sea and in the mountains. Facing towards the midnight sun, the road to Breistrand winds its way south via Evenskjer and a host of beautiful small villages, where it follows sheltered bays and green meadows through an active cultural coastal environment. You can taste traditional food based on local produce, or you can take a trip by sail or motor boat. There are many marked trails within a beautiful and captivating landscape, from inland mountain landscapes to coastal landscapes. Here, there

are also rich natural resources with opportunities for sea fishing from land or boat, and inland fishing in rivers and lakes. The municipality has a Sami population, and is rich in Sami and Norwegian history, culture and tradition. Situated as it is by the mainland at Tjeldsund, the Tjeldsund bridge is truly the gateway to Hinnøya and Lofoten. But before you go there, you have much to look forward to here in Skånland. Administrative centre: Evenskjer, Tovik/Sandstrand in the centre and Grov to the north.

You can taste traditional food based on local produce Tjeldsund municipality

Tjeldsund municipality Population: 1,328. Area: 312 km2 • www.tjeldsund.kommune.no• post@tjeldsund.kommune.no Tjeldsund has been a vital traffic artery between the north and south throughout the ages. The name of the strait, and later the municipality, is derived from the word ‘tjelle’, which means to camp for the night. Archaeological finds in the area bear witness to settlements going back several thousand years. The most well-known is the Steinsvik sword from the Viking Age. One part of the municipality is situated on Hinnøya, another on the mainland and yet another on Tjeldøya. Villages in the area are Kongsvik, Ramsund and Fjelldal. The municipality is host to the Ramsund Naval Base and Norway’s Fire-fighting school in Fjelldal. The culture here is vibrant, and there is a wide range of voluntary organisations.

6 / www.destinationharstad.no

Tjeldsund municipality focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship, and works hard to ensure that Tjeldsund is a good place to live. Nature entices you to undertake outdoor activities and experiences, such as fishing on a summer night, playing along the seashore, cycling on Tjeldøya, eight wonderful walks or hikes in Kongsvikdalen or on Hinnøya, to mention just a few. Several events and attractions in the region can be visited. Trolldagan in Kongsvik takes place at the end of August.

Bjarkøy municipality Population: 476 Area: 75 km2 • www.bjarkoy.kommune.no • fellespost@bjarkoy.kommune.no Bjarkøy is an island community consisting of 365 islands of varying sizes dotted around the edge of Vågsfjord and out towards the ocean in the north. We have everything here from high mountains and flat green meadows to islands with white beaches and sheltered bays – an “Eldorado” for those of you who like to spend time outdoors. We have good fishing areas around the islands and out at sea, which makes it possible to earn a living from fishing or just enjoy a day out in a boat.

There are many cultural monuments here from the Viking Age and the Iron Age. There are also marked hiking trails where you can enjoy the silence and view from the highest peaks. Municipal centre: Nergårdshamn.

An “Eldorado” for those of you who like to spend time outdoors Bjarkøy municipality

Kvæfjord municipality Population: 3,060. Area: 512,7 km2 Local tourist information: Service office, Kvæfjord town hall, Bygdeveien 26, 9475 Borkenes, tel. +47 77 02 30 00 (weekdays 08.00 – 15.30) • www.kvafjord.kommune.no postmottak@kvafjord.kommune.no The municipality of Kvæfjord, with its magnificent landscape, has always been perfect for agriculture and fishing. Findings on the island of Kveøy show that settlements existed here as long ago as 300 BC. Many items dating back to the Iron Age and Viking times have also been found. Kvæfjord is known for its sweet and juicy strawberries, which are ripened slowly under the light of the midnight sun, as well as the production of high quality potatoes and other vegetables. Kvæfjord and Gullesfjord are excellent fjords for fishing, and there are also many fine lakes where one can fish for both trout and char. The area also offers many berry and mushroom picking opportunities. The entire municipality offers a rich and varied bird and wildlife population, including harbour porpoises,

seals and otters that can often be seen playing at the water’s edge. One can often see eagles flying high above or sitting on a rock on the shore cleaning their feathers. Kvæfjord is therefore a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers. The road to Lofoten and Vesterålen goes through Kvæfjord, and from Harstad the route is shortened considerably by taking the ferry from Refsnes to Flesnes. This trip offers a variety of experiences in nature and a detour to the beautiful island of Kveøya is recommended. Busses with passengers from the coastal steamer leave daily from Harstad to Sortland, and this is the most popular outing along the coast. Close to where Gullesfjord ends, a roundabout gives you the choice of several directions: The E10 east towards Tjeldsund and Harstad and on to the E6, the E10 west towards Lofoten, the Rv 85 to Vesterålen and the ferry connection to Kvæfjord and Harstad, and the Fv 103 to Moelv and Gullholm. Kvæfjord is an excellent walking area in both summer and winter. The Melå plateau is recommended and can be reached from several places. Gullesfjorbotn and Kvæfjordeidet feature fantastic ski runs during the winter. The level of difficulty varies from easy runs to climbing challenges.

The sky must be clear and there must be unobstructed visibility in order to see the midnight sun. The ‘‘blue light’’ towards the south is particularly beautiful just before it becomes dark.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ‘Aurora Borealis’ is the Latin name for the northern lights – solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic north pole. It is only possible to see the northern lights when it is dark and the sky is clear, from August to April, and they are at their most intense between 10pm and midnight. The Harstad region is the perfect place to experience the beautiful and intense play of colours that is the northern lights.

Krøttøy, Tel. +47 770 90000 , fax +47 770 90001 www.valhall.no post@valhall.no From the top of the island there is a panoramic view of the archipelago, where you can experience the midnight sun and the northern lights without interfering lights – that’s why the island is known as Nordlysøya – the island of the northern lights! Valhall offers excellent nature safaris by boat, which visit the island where magnificent white-tailed eagles nest and hunt their prey. We offer whale safaris during the winter, where large pods of humpback and killer whales hunt shoals of herring right into the shallows. This is an amazing sight, where we get close to these incredible animals. Another exciting trip is our photo safari, where we visit a local family of seals. They are very curious and will often swim right up to the boat. These island tours are true adventures, because you never know what will happen. Sometimes there are birds catching fish, other times we may catch a glimpse of an otter that has caught a fish and is hurrying to eat the catch before it is stolen away by a white-tailed eagle. At Valhall you can also hire a bike and cycle between the islands, or find your own special beach and dream yourself away from a busy day. We offer deep sea rafting with RIBs with capacity for 12 persons, and can tailor packages for groups and businesses.

HOLOFOTENGUIDES Tel: +47 41 20 42 10 holofoten@gmail.com Holofotenguides offer grotto visits and guided tours to various peaks throughout the year. Tours are carried out across the entire region. Holofotenguides have been guiding in some of Norway’s best grottos for over 10 years. The grottos are located not far from Evenes airport. Holofotenguides have guided various journalists who have written about the grottos

in a range of media, including the magazine Vi Menn. NRK has also made a documentary about the grottos. Trollkjerka: The grottos we guide most are Trollkjerka and Resshelleran. The former is spectacular with waterfalls, huge open spaces and tight passages. This grotto is one of Norway’s longest and it is quite possible to get lost. With Holofotenguides you can be sure of being guided safely through the grottos. This is an exciting experience you will never forget! Here you can wander through areas known as the Oracle, the Church hall, the Sacristy and the Ogress’s ceiling. You will get to hear about, and perhaps try, the “ball breaking passage”, see stalactites and stalagmites and other natural works of art in the grotto. Resshellaren: Resshellaren is considerably smaller but can offer equally exciting experiences. It is possible to stand upright in this grotto almost all the way through, so it is suitable for everyone, in both small and larger groups. Resshellaren is open all year round, regardless of the weather. In the winter we use snow shoes to reach the entrance. This is an experience in itself – nobody forgets a snowshoeing trip under the starry sky while the northern lights dance overhead. Both grottos are about a 15-25 minute walk from the road. Holofotenguides supply the necessary equipment; helmets, thermal suits, head torches and other technical safety equipment. Season: All year round. Price: On request Duration: Resshellaren approx. 2 hours, Trollkjerka 2-4 hours. Follow us on Facebook!

Even though ship repairs and maintenance were the main focus, the shipyards produced everything from ships to winches, lanterns, snow ploughs, bus bodies, steam engines, steam boilers and tank farms. VALHALL Krøttøy • Tel: +47 77 09 00 00 Fax: +47 77 09 00 01 • post@valhall.no www.valhall.no Visit the world’s most modern coastal fort! Meløyvær fort was a well-kept secret, which was strictly guarded during the Cold War. The fort is modern and was completed in 1988. With its three 120mm Bofors cannons, it is now preserved as a national museum. In the ground beneath the cannons there are 6-7 floors that take you below sea level. Here there is a kitchen, canteen, offices, generator room, ammunition room and residential quarters. There is enough space here to support around 40 soldiers for several weeks without additional supplies. The fort was self-sufficient, with electricity and water, and rubber pads in order to absorb pressure waves and shaking in the event of bombing. The fort had a special mission, and was therefore highly important in a defence context. Valhall arranges guided tours of the fort, where you will learn about why the fort was

so important during the Cold War. You can also see the Norwegian military’s film from 1992, which shows how 400 soldiers took part in the largest military exercise to ever take place in Andfjord. A visit to the fort, after watching the film about how the fort would defend itself against enemy powers, provides a better understanding of the fort’s purpose. Going inside the fort makes for an exciting trip, and it is also possible to visit the command post. Our guide can tell you many stories from the time when the fort was in operation.

Mighty mountains and fjords awaken strong emotions. Allow yourself to be impressed. Be inquisitive and let nature’s never ending charm, seduce you.

Hikes and walks – Some tips Websites with hiking suggestions for the region: www.utpaatur.net and www.hinnoy.no From around 15 June to 1 October, you can be fairly sure that the mountains will be free from snow. The weather in the periods prior to and after this varies from year to year. The season naturally lasts longer in areas below 350m and close to the coast. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, and we recommend that you always carry the appropriate map and a compass. Remember to pack warm, windproof and waterproof clothing in your backpack. The weather can turn quickly, so it is also a good idea to

take a hat and gloves if planning a trip into the high mountains. You can purchase maps and get some good tips from Harstad Tourist Office. We also act as the service office for the Norwegian Trekking Association, where you can obtain information about the association’s routes and purchase keys for their cabins.
