Northern lights over Spåkenes


MUST DO-LIST 1.

Gorsabrua, Kåfjorddalen and Halti A valley with canyons, waterfalls and marked trails. Hiking, cycling, skiing and snowmobile tours are great activities in Kåfjorddalen. Gorsabrua is a famous suspension bridge over the canyon Sabetjohk (155 m deep). Every Saturday during summer, you can bungee jump from the bridge. 8 km from the parking lot at the end of the road, you will find Finlands highest mountain­top called Halti.

Steindalsbreen Between Oteren and Lyngseidet lies Steindalen. The hike to the Steindalsbreen is 5 km long and you can easily enter the glacier

Lyngstuva A perfect place to experience the midnight sun and the Northern lights! The trail runs along the shoreline from the parking lot at the end of the road on Russelv and leads to a lighthouse on the northernmost point of Lyngen Peninsula. The walk takes approximated 1 hour.

Spåkenes A viewpoint with many 2nd world war memories and a a 360-degree view over the Lyngenalps and the Lyngenfjord. From this place, you can ENJOY the northern lights and the midnight sun.

Manndalen, Senter for nordlige folk A center with purpose to develop, maintain and promote Sami culture and indigenous people. A museum, café and a garden with different cultural buildings are available. The music festival Riddu Riddu is taking place here every year in July.

Jægervatnet Jægervatnet is a lake located 10 minutes north of Svensby in Lyngenfjord. Activities such as fishing (with fishing card), ice fishing, boat trips, ice skating and viewing the Lyngenalps are possible here.

Mountainbiking The area around Skibotn and Hatteng offers great tracks for those who are interested in mountain­biking. In the early autumn, the race “Lavkarittet” and the “Stifestival” takes place here. Stifestival is a festival for cyclists who are interested in mountain biking.

Rasteby kaia. A traditional pier that was used for storage and drying of fishing equipment. There are few such facilities in Norway again today and they have just restored the pier.

10. Skibotn markedplace. The market in Skibotn had its peak

in the 1800s and was the largest and most important trade market in North Troms. Only two of the original trade stalls are preserved. The storage holds an exhibition using images, text, objects and sound effects to provide an insight into the old market life. There are also temporary exhibitions, and there is a small museum shop.

11. Gamslett gård ½ kilometre from Svensby Ferry Harbour,

you will find Gamslett Fish farmer Museum. The old court was built as early as 1610 and the families who have lived in the old house during the years have survived on a combination of fishing, farming and harvesting of various resources.

12. Holmenes gård. You will find Holmenes Sea Sami Farm

in the inner Kåfjord, 4 kilometres from Birtavarre. At this Farm, built in 1850, you can experience how a coastal Sami family lived before the war and learn something about the contrast between then and now.

Bollmannveien A marked trail up to a viewpoint. This is a war memory, the Russian, Yugoslavian and Polish prisoners built Bollmann road during the 2nd World War. Toilet and rest area is available.
