Welcome to Alta, the City of the Northern Lights at 70°N In the City of the Northern Lights, you'll find a never-ending range of activities and adventure, all framed by the warm, golden tones of the Midnight Sun: Visit the Alta Museum to view the rock carvings on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Enjoy a moment of silence in the Northern Lights Cathedral. Venture out onto the wide open plateau via mountain bike or on your own to feet. Take a guided tour of Northern Europe’s largest canyon. Go fishing on the fjord, or glide along a river in a canoe or kayak. Sample the local cuisine. Come discover the arctic frontier in all its summer glory! POPULATION: Alta is the largest city in Norway’s Finnmark County with 20,000 inhabitants, and is a growing town center. SHOPPING: Alta town center has a great range of shopping at a number of locations including AMFI, Parksenteret and Sentrum Syd, as well as smaller shops in and around city center. ENTERTAINMENT: Pubs and Restaurants: Nordlysbaren, Restaurant Alta (Scandic Hotel Alta), Du Verden, Barila Pub, Catch 22, Wing Wah House, Bar & Restaurant Haldde (Thon Hotel Vica), Café Uno, Studenthuset City, Hoftepluss and Tavernan Alta and Restaurant Havblikk. CLIMATE: The climate in Alta is dry and stable, with summer temperatures commonly around +15C, occasionally rising to +20C or so. The warmest months are usually July and August. However, since Alta lies well over the Arctic Cirle the weather CAN be unpredictable. Snow and colder temperatures are possible into June and beginning in early October, especially in higher elevations. The Midnight Sun - when the sun is above the horizon 24 hours a day - lasts from mid-May to the end of July, and there is no full darkness from mid-April to mid-September. BIKE AND HIKING TRAILS: Alta has an excellent network of bike trails covering both short and long distances, through valleys, forests and over mountain plains. For hikers, there are nearly endless possibilities, up to mountaintops, out to hidden canyons and waterfalls, through forests and over plains, and along rivers and fjords.

SarvesAlta Outdoor Center Jun 01 – Oct 01 At SarvesAlta Outdoor Center, we offer a day of fun, excitement and challenges along activity trails in the arctic woods. We have six different trails with games, activities and zip lines built safely in the Nordic pine trees in the Sarves forest. You need no forehand experiences to participate – but if you are experienced, we can offer challenging trails for you too. In the tops of the pine trees we have 55 different games, zip lines and activities where you use balance, climbing and creativity to get from one platform to another. The grand finale is the 207-meter long speedy zipline. The six different trails are marked with difficulty levels to insure that everyone will have fun at their own pace.

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 – Oct 01 If you are comfortable heading out into the nearby arctic wilderness on your own, then come into Alta and rent a mountain bike. The Cube Stereo bikes are easy to ride and great performers along whatever rugged terrain you decide to tackle. GLØD Explorer rents an array of different sizes as well, and there are even smaller cycles available if you have a whole family that wants to head out for adventure.

Our local guide will tell you about the history of Alta from the earliest settlements to the town of today, plus stories about early northern lights research in the area, nature and culture, Recherche expedition in the fjord, the local church, and the Northern Lights Cathedral. Partway through the tour, we will stop by our fireplace near the sea to enjoy the silence and prepare food and warm drinks over the open fire.

Gargia Fjellstue Jun 20 - Oct 20 The tour begins at Gargia Lodge The trail leads us through the oldest forest in this area, and on your way up to the waterfall we will pass nesting places for owls and falcons. This area is also home to Mr. Moose, foxes and rabbits - keep an eye out and you might be able to find their calling cards. After a 2 km hike you will enjoy the view of the Orvvos waterfall. We continue above the waterfall where we will find a nice view over Gargia Lodge and the valley of Gargia. AI60 Hiking Tour to Sautso, Northern Europe's Largest Canyon

Gargia Fjellstue Jun 20 - Oct 20 This is a full day guided tracking tour with pack dogs, vaste plains and great views. The tour starts just above the tree line on Bæskades mountain plateau. The trail is easy going and follows the gentle waves of the landscape. Two small rivers have to be crossed before we approach the edge of the spectacular Sautso Canyon. From the viewing point you have a spectacular view over the canyon and Alta River. Over a hundred meters below you, you can hear the roaring of Gabofossen/ Gabo-rapids. We take a rest around the bonfire and enjoy some hot beverage and lunch. After lunch and a short break we head back across the plateau in our old tracks. On our way back we take our time to study the wildlife and sometimes we can see small herds of reindeers grazing in this area during the summer. Maybe we can see the white reindeer which is special for the Sami people and they name it Gabba (the white reindeer).

HIKING AND BIKING

GLØD Explorer May 01 – Oct 15 Your guide will meet you in Alta city center and take you the short distance out of town to the Lille Raipas trailhead. From there, you'll make your way along the trail, passing through forest and over bare hillsides. You'll see a little mountain lake complete with its own waterfall during the wet part of the season, and hike over mounds of chunky rock taken from a copper mine in the 1800s. At the top, you'll perch on a rocky hill. Look around in all directions, and see the Alta River Valley, the town spread out before you, Komsa Mountain off in the distance (and below you!), and other sights. Search around the hillside and you will find the marker commemorating Friedrich von Struve's Geodetic Arc, a surprisingly accurate measurement of the Earth's curve from the 1800s. Your guide will provide you with a "matpakke", traditional Norwegian tour food and drink. After enjoying the view and a rest, you'll return to the bottom of the mountain and head back to Alta.

GLØD Explorer May 01 - Oct 15 Your guide will meet you in Alta city center and take you the short distance over to the Komsa trailhead. From there, you'll head along a ski track and then up the side of the hill. Your guide is more than happy to match your pace, so if you're in "beginner's" shape, it's not a problem. At the top, you'll enjoy a marvelous view in all directions, including the city, the nearby valleys, the fjord and the surrounding mountains. Your guide will provide you with a "matpakke", traditional Norwegian tour food and drink. After enjoying the view and a rest, you'll return to the bottom of the mountain and head back to your starting point.

Whether you're an expert or a beginner, this is a fun way to literally get off the beaten path and into the middle of arctic wilderness for a while.

AI145 Hiking Tour to Alta Canyon with a Husky

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 GLØD Explorer takes you along on a hiking tour to a magnificent panorama of northern Europe's largest canyon, Alta Canyon. You will walk right up to the edge and take in the majestic view, well aware that it's a hundred meter drop to the river floor below you. The walking distance for this tour is 13 kilometers round trip, so plan for about 4 hours of walking. The trail is good and clear, but we still recommend that you wear good, half-height mountain boots. You will be making your way across a couple of streams along the way - they can definitely be crossed, but the amount of water in them will depend on the season and recent rainfall. Some days, you can hop from rock to rock; other times, you might enjoy the experience of wading through mountain-fresh water!

Once we reach 300 meters over sea level we pass the tree line, and we will see Haldde Mountain ahead, rising 907 meters above sea level. The last part up to the summit is the steepest one as we zig zag our way up the mountain.

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 Hike with GLØD Explorer up to the top of Mt. Haldde, home of the historic Northern Lights Observatory built in 1899. The length of this tour is around 18 kilometers round-trip, with a rise in elevation of almost 1000 meters. We will follow the well-marked and well-established trail to the top, and expect that the total walking time will be around 5 hours. Even though this is a relatively long tour, there are local school-age children who regularly make the climb. It is strenuous but not impossible! Bring good mountain-hiking boots, and a pack with extra clothes - you may very well find temperatures at the top to be a lot colder than you expect, and a warm sweater, hat, gloves and long pants will be a welcome change.

GLØD Explorer Jun 01 - Oct 01 Your nature adventure begins in city center, where your hosts will pick you up and drive you to Bollo, one of the best fishing spots along the Alta River and where your trip will begin. If you're not experienced with paddling a canoe, don't worry! All the instruction you'll need to handle the canoe will be provided to you, and you'll have good company along the way. Along the way, you'll head to the riverbank and stop for a delicious lunch, prepared over an open fire. Then it's back to the river for the rest of the journey.

The tour includes transport from and back to Alta, and lunch along the way.

GLØD Explorer Jun 15 - Oct 15 Take two days in the breathtaking Alta Canyon and wind your way back down towards Alta. Sautso, as the canyon is called locally, is Northern Europe's largest and is full of wildlife and stunning views, yet its remote location has left it relatively undiscovered by travelers. This tour will take you not just TO Sautso, but INTO Sautso, giving you a rare opportunity to see this area right from the middle of it. The best view of the canyon will be right from your canoe as it glides along through the mostly-calm waters of the upper river. You'll stop for the night in the high part of the canyon, with a traditional lavvu tent along the river's edge providing us with shelter and a little shade from the endless daylight. The next day, we will resume our journey down and into the Alta Valley, and back home again.

Along with fishing and ecology, the scenery along the entire river is nothing short of spectacular, and one of the best ways to experience that is by boat. Your tour will start at one of the camping sites just outside of Alta. You'll board a long, narrow, wooden boat - the style has been used along the river for centuries - and motor upstream. Your expert guide will navigate your boat safely along the river, pointing out sites as you go. You'll travel up to an area in the river known as Nedre Sierra, a prime location for watching the river's fat salmon jumping. Afterwards, you'll return downriver to your starting place at CampAlta.

AI119 Sunset Over Alta Fjord

Pæskatun Jun 01 - Aug 15 We are inviting you to come with us to see how we enjoy life and nature in Alta. From time to time during the summer we go down to the fjord for fishing, make a campfire, relax and enjoy the company of our family and friends. We try to catch a fish or two and then we prepare them on the fire… and if we don’t get any fish? No problem, we will grill some hot dogs instead! Fish or no fish, the tour itself is always the most important thing. We will be exploring the surroundings and there will be lots of storytelling. Pictures of our fishing adventure will be taken and sent to a given e-mail address.

Ice Cube of Aurora Apr 15 - Sep 15 Come join us for an evening cruise out on the dramatic and breathtaking Alta Fjord. You'll cruise out along the sparkling water under a huge sky, surrounded by low mountains dotted with tiny towns and occasional houses, and Alta off in the distance. As evening descends, the setting sun will light the sky on fire - arctic sunsets are things of majesty. Is it June or July? Then you get the midnight sun casting vibrant colors on the surrounding mountains. A cloudy night? Look for the setting sun to shine dramatic beams down through the clouds onto the gray and challenging water. Along the way, there will be food and drink, and as you cruise and wait for the setting sun, you can take refuge from the wind and play fun games with the other guests, or hear stories from the captain about the local area. You will return to shore around midnight, either in the full daylight of midsummer or the gloom of the outer months.

The tipi tents you will stay in are insulated, and come with a double bed (with comforters and heated blankets just in case), and a wood-burning stove at one edge of the tent so you can watch the crackling fire as you curl up in bed. One section of the lavvo has been replaced with a floor-to-top window. This gives you a perfect view of the natural surroundings of our lodge. If you are lucky you might see a moose passing by in the late evening or early morning! And don't worry about the midnight sun - when you are ready to sleep, the windows can be covered to give you a darkened room. Holmen Husky Lodge will pick you up in Alta, take you to their farm, and outfit you with clothing as needed to match the day’s weather. You will be trained on handling your cart, a sturdy vehicle built for two with big offroad tires, spring suspension, steering bar and even a handbrake. Don’t want to drive? You can be a passenger instead! Six strong dogs will pull you along the Alta River and through the nearby forest - enjoy the ride, the power of the dogs, and the beautiful arctic countryside. Back at the kennel, we will have a fire and something warm to drink waiting for you in our traditional lavvo tent, and your guide will join you to chat about life as a dog musher. And of course, there will be plenty of time to meet our farm full of happy husky dogs and take pictures. AI156 Haldde Mountain and the Majestic Alta Canyon by Helicopter

Trasti & Trine Jan 01 - Dec 31 Hytta, our cosy cabin, is in the middle of the farmyard right beside the dog yard. This is a nice place to stay for young and old alike. It’s usually full of activity here during the daytime, but in the calm of the evening the silence is only broken by the rustle from the wind in the pine forest or the occasional howl from the dog yard. The cabin contains one single room, one twin room and two double rooms. We offer a homemade organic breakfast in the neighbouring house from 8.30am to 10am.

HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 If you are in Alta you won`t want to miss out on a trip to Sautso, northern Europe's largest canyon. This majestic canyon is situated along the Alta River, and is a truly beautiful sight from above. Bring your camera and capture your adventure forever. The tour starts from Alta airport. We lift off and head towards the Alta River, a world-famous river known for its huge salmon. Sport fishers come here from all over the world to fish - even royalty! We follow the river's course for 40 km to the point where the beauty of the Alta Canyon reveals itself. The canyon is about 400 meters deep and 7,5 km long, and holds the title as the Northern Europe`s largest canyon. At the end of the canyon we reach the power station and dam, the site of big environmental and political protests in the 1980s and the place where the Alta and Kautokeino rivers connect. We then turn back and fly over Tverrelvdalen, a beautiful river valley at the foot of a slate mountain, and finally back to Alta airport.

HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 Combine historic monuments and spectacular nature, mix with a helicopter's unique perspective, and you've got the recipe for a tour that could be the highlight of your holiday. On this trip we put two popular destinations together: the Northern Lights Observatory on Mt. Haldde, and Sautso, northern Europe's largest canyon. The tour starts from Alta airport. We lift off and fly towards the Haldde peak. At 900 meters over sea level, we will discover the Northern Lights Observatory. The first building was constructed in 1899 as a base to study weather and the northern lights, and Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland stayed there during the first winter season. In 1912, construction began on more buildings, and the base became the world's first permanent northern lights observatory. From there, we turn towards towards the Alta River, a world-famous river known for its huge salmon. AI157 Alta to North Cape by Helicopter

33 PRICE

Per person: 15000,-

HeliTours Jan 01 - Dec 31 Come discover the vast, wild arctic land of Finnmark, Norway's northernmost county from the bird's-eye view of a helicopter. Have your camera ready as you travel from Alta to North Cape and back - this tour will give you nonstop photo opportunities! The tour begins at Alta airport, where we take off and set a course to the famous "northernmost point in Europe" - North Cape! Watch the natural world change below you from Alta's lush river valleys and tree-studded hills to the harsh and untamed plateau. If you are lucky you might even see a reindeer or two along the way. We will cruise over tiny villages and the rugged coastline, and the farther north we go, the more barren the landscape will become. The trees and scrubby bushes will give way to rocks and windswept outcroppings, until finally at the north coast there will only be the Barents Sea stretching as far as the eye can see. We will land at North Cape, and you will have an hour to explore the cape and visit the Center there before returning to Alta. Wild, beautiful arctic nature at its best, from overhead and up close it's a rare experience of a lifetime!

North Adventure Jun 01 - Oct 15 One of our best guides from North Adventure will meet you in Alta with a private car, and take you to the edge of town where the Alta Museum sits along the edge of Alta Fjord. You will walk along an outdoor boardwalk to see some of the thousands of rock carvings in the area. The carvings, dating from between 6,000 and 2,000 years ago, show fascinating, fleeting glimpses into the lives of people who lived here after the end of the last ice age. At the end of the outdoor tour, you can choose to continue and see more recently-discovered carvings, or head back up to the Museum to look over the inside exhibits. Your guide can answer questions and tell you about the exhibits, or just let you wander and explore on your own. With time remaining, take a look through the museum's wide selection of souvenirs from the local area, or sit with coffee (and maybe a fresh waffle!) and chat with the guide about life in Alta and Norway. The museum's coffee shop has one of the best views of Alta Fjord, so it's the perfect place to have a relaxing conversation. AIS10 Summer Private Tour to Alta Canyon and Power Station

Per person: 1800,-

North Adventure Jun 01 - Oct 15 One of our best guides from North Adventure will meet you in Alta with a private car and bring you out to K책fjord. Along the way, they will explain about the history of the area, both in general and specifically regarding the events of the World War. You'll stop at the old Alta Church, which survived the destruction of Alta, and at the deep bomb crater at the fjord's edge where one of the Tall Boy bombs missed its target. Then it's over the beautiful and architecturally interesting K책fjord bridge to the Tirpitz Museum. The museum features artifacts from the area and from Tirpitz itself, and brings a startling clarity to the participants on both sides of the conflict. Once done at the museum, you'll stop outside K책fjord Church (the only other building in the area to survive the war's destruction), and then head up the coast for a walk along the edge of the fjord to find the ruins of a bunker amid the delightful arctic scenery. Then it's back to Alta and modern times again.

North Adventure May 01 - Oct 30 You will be picked up by a guide/driver in a private car, and driven out to Sautso, the biggest canyon in Northern Europe. The one-hour ride to the canyon will give the guide to talk with you about life in Alta and Norway, the history of the area, and details about the history and controversy of the dam and the Sami people in the area. You'll have time to stop and take some pictures of the stunning canyon view, and then it's off to the power station itself. Though the facility is currently generating power, all operations are controlled remotely, so you and your guide will very likely be the only people in the huge facility! You'll descend through a tunnel to the visitor center inside the rock cliff, see a short film produced by the power company, and then head out to walk across the dam itself.
