– ART ‘N TARTAN – O

n a sunny Sunday afternoon in June in the wee Scottish township of Waipu the area behind the row of shops in the Centre was a hive of activity. It was preliminary judging day for the, now iconic, Waipu Museum Art’nTartan Wearable Art Contest and Show. This was the time when the judges had their first glimpse of the amazing entries in this year’s contest. Competition is fierce with over forty entries vying for a share of the huge prize pool of $16000. Each contestant is paraded before the judges behind closed doors and there is an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement underlying the friendly atmosphere of the dressing room

especially set up in the Coronation Hall for this important day. Art’nTartan is now in its ninth year with a big tenth anniversary extravaganza planned for 2020. The Executive Director for the Show is Stuart Devenie. Stuart is well known to many theatre, television and movie fans. He brings a wealth of experience to the event. His career spans nearly five decades of involvement with the performing arts, not only in the form of acting and directing in theatre, film and television but also as a senior actor and theatre tutor at many New Zealand training Institutions including Northland Polytechnic.

This year the audience will be treated to a new stage layout and the complete freedom to design wearable artworks of their choice has motivated designers to create costumes that will thrill the audience with their creativity and audacity. The inclusion of a visible amount of tartan has been the only criteria for this year’s presentation. Tickets are now on sale and selling fast. Performances are Friday, 19th and Saturday, 20th July at 8pm. There is a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. Prices are $50 for Friday, opening night. Saturday matinee $40 with $20 for under sixteens and the ever popular Awards Night Saturday at 8pm, $60. All on sale from www.eventfinda.co.nz.

Stuart welcomes the opportunity to work with the dedicated group of volunteers who form the Art’nTartan organising team. Part of this team is another newcomer Waipu resident, Claire Drake. Claire is managing director of the well- known Icon Textiles and has many years of experience in fabrics and design. Her role as Production Manager involves organising a great many aspects of the event from budgeting to marketing and production of the show programme to name but a few. Stuart fully intends to build upon the solid and successful foundation of the past eight shows. ‘Waipu Museum Art and Tartan has become a Waipu taonga and we hope this year’s show will be as

entertaining as past presentations, with some new, exciting and unexpected enhancements appropriate for this local treasure’, he says. His exact plans remain under wraps but with a twinkle in his eye he has revealed the presence of a mysterious and glamorous hostess who will oversee the proceedings. ‘We have managed to secure the services of Dame Coira McWillie, a beloved local celebrity’, he says. Dame Coira was, in fact, part of the behind the scenes stage crew for many years but has been persuaded to come out of retirement and share her prodigious talents with the Waipu community onstage. A rare treat for those who know her and quite a coup for the organising Committee.

GETTING INTO THE SCOTTISH SPIRIT WINTER IN WAIPU KICKS OFF WITH AN ACTION-PACKED FESTIVAL CALENDAR

W

inter in Waipu is about to launch again this year with lots of old favourites happening as well as some new events. The 5-week festival starts in late June and runs right through July and promises fun for all the family with a host of exciting activities planned. While the original idea behind the festival was to encourage visitors to Waipu over the quieter winter season, the calendar of events also brings the community together to catch up after a busy summer and of course reflect and celebrate the towns proud Scottish heritage. This celebration of Waipu and its colourful history all comes together thanks to the hardworking efforts of the local Waipu Business and Community Group, a group of about 50 locals and local businesses who give up their time to promote their town and foster community spirit. This week it’s all hands on deck as volunteers distribute flyers and begin promoting the individual events. Some of the events are organised by the Group themselves while others are run by some of the community groups in the district, regardless all of the activities are promoted at Winter in Waipu and the schedule is definitely busy for the entire Waipu district. Naturally many of the events are designed with a nod to the Scottish roots of Waipu. The local museums’

annual Art N Tartan event is an amazing show with a fantastical display of creativity and costumes and tickets always sell quickly. International Tartan Day is celebrated in Waipu on July 1 with a parade through the town complete with the local kapa haka group and pipe band performances and is a real local’s favourite. The Waipu Fire Station Shortbread competition is another popular event, with four shortbread categories and plenty of tasty baking to sample. Many of the sports clubs and teams also embrace the Scottish vibe with the local rugby, netball and croquet clubs hosting games in their finest tartan during the

festival. This year is also the launch of a new key event during the festival – a Matariki celebration – described as a “celebration of whanau, friends and new beginnings”. The honouring of Matariki during the festival has always been a longstanding aim for the organisers and they are accordingly very proud they have been able to make it happen in consultation with the local marae. The Matariki celebration will take place on July 11 at the Razza Kitchen and Bar and features guest speakers, a kapa haka performance plus a full buffet banquet dinner. Thanks to the hard-working efforts

of the locals who are passionate on promoting Waipu and boosting both community spirit and enterprise, Winter in Waipu is one of several local events that keeps Waipu thriving for both locals and visitors. The annual Highland Games is a huge event on the Northland calendar, there’s also the annual Christmas Eve Parade and Easter Carnival along with several weekend market days. Waipu is a town for all seasons thanks to the efforts of the local community but for now the spotlight is definitely on Winter so check out the calendar of events to see what’s on offer and put some sparkle back into your winter plans!

90 YEARS OF SURF

LIFE SAVING IN WAIPU O

ver the summer season Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club celebrated 90 years of Surf Life Saving Service to the community. Being the oldest still active club in the Northern Region, we have a rich proud history of saving lives between the red and yellow flags. Lifeguards and Patrol Supporters had a very busy season of patrolling, taking preventative actions along the beach, performing rescues to people getting pulled into rips, administering first aid to beach goers at Waipu Cove and Langs Beach, training new lifeguards and new IRB drivers and crew, running first aid courses, beach education, filming beach safety videos, competing in regional and national championships, innovating by sending a team of 14 around Northlands un-patrolled beaches on a beach safety education tour, supporting community events, and coaching our young nippers

in water safety. With all this ahead of us, we decided to hold our celebrations preseason. Past and present members attended various events over a weekend in October. One of the highlights were the demonstrations showing the old R and R (Rescue and Resuscitation) Life saving methods, contrasted with the new current methods. What was particularly special about this - is we had some of our members who patrolled back in the 1950s / 1960s to run the reel. Emily Stolwerk (qualified this season), Max Leonard, Tim Frazerhurst, Bryce Beeston, Dave Woodman Wendy Hunter nee Beeston. Max Leonard was club captain between 1959 1963, and Wendy and Bryce Beeston are still patrolling today as refreshed Lifeguards. The demonstration of how the Reel was used to rescue patients, was contrasted

with current lifesaving techniques using Rescue Boards, the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) that is widely used, and the Rescue Water Craft (jetski) also did patient pick up demonstrations, along with our competitive Masters Canoe Team, showcasing the sport aspect of surf lifesaving. There were fun activities for the children too, with beach games and competitive beach flags as a sampler of our popular Junior Surf program. The days events were topped off with a club gathering of 150 past and present members for a celebratory dinner in a marquee at the club rooms. We had representatives there from each era, and ran a panel interview of club captains from the last 60 years. Club captain Max Leonard (1959-1963), told stories of how they started the idea of rostering for their patrols - with only 6 members having their bronze award, they roped in their friends to help. Using the reel they did 27 rescues in one day when there was a strong rip running. They also tried to support neighbouring beaches as they did not have surf life saving clubs formed yet. We also heard inspiring stories from other previous club captains Laura Andrews (club captain 2012-2014) has gone on to become a Fire Fighter at Auckland Airport, and is now a hovercraft operator, with a passion for emergency care which started when she joined surf life saving as a youngster. The weekends 90th celebratory events were organised by Angela Stolwerk who was honoured on the night with a Life Membership to the club, for her 31 years of

outstanding commitment and service to the club and community. It was a fantastic weekend, and was great to hear so many stories of the clubs strong history. A book on the history of the club, written by Ian Godfrey, was published in time for the celebrations, is a very interesting and entertaining read, “Waipu Cove became a very popular seaside resort in the 1920s, and Edwin McMillan’s beach store and guest house did a roaring trade. With the increasing popularity of the beach, it became evident that something had to be done to provide a regular beach guard for swimmers in the surf. Edward McMillan suggested to family and their friends in 1928, that a surf club be formed and lifesaving equipment provided. He called a meeting of interested men in his hall and it was agreed that the club should be started and a lifesaving reel bought. This established Waipu as being the first formal Surf Life Saving Club in what is now known as the Northern Region and the northern most club in New Zealand at that time. On the day the reel arrived it was installed on the beach and lifesaving drill began. On the next Sunday it was brought before a large crowd on the beach and demonstration given. Then, “the hat” went round and they had the first contribution towards payment of the reel; they did this twice on that first Sunday and from then on every time there was a crowd on the beach until, at last, the equipment was paid for. (excerpts taken from Ian Godfrey History of Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club).

– The Great Waipu Milk Off –

Y

ourVet owners, Mike Macartney, Sue Palmer, and Mark Borich have lived in the area for a number of years and love being part of the Waipu and wider Bream Bay community. “We live in a great community filled with friendly, supportive people. There is no other place that I would choose to live and raise my family,” says Mike. “But you only get back what you put in so hosting an event for the people in the community to enjoy is one way that we can do that.” As in previous years YourVet will be contributing to Waipu in Tartan with the inaugural “Great Waipu Milk Off”. “We’re really looking forward to staging this event and having a laugh with the locals” says Sue. The idea is to discover who has the fastest milking hands in Waipu. Whether you’re country folk or a suburbanite, this promises to be a competitive night of hilarity. Anyone is welcome to enter the competition. You don’t need to be an experienced milker but you do need to be 18 years or older to compete. Be warned, this is not for the dairy intolerant or for those who don’t enjoy a wee dram. It will get a little messy but

don’t worry, aprons will be provided. There will be a series of heats, semi-finals and a grand final culminating in a prize for “The Fastest Milker in the Shire”. And, whether you’re milking or not, popular local Jenny Carr will be entertaining us with a Scottish related competition. Everyone is welcome to enter so don your best tartan and come on down – you never know, you may win one of many other prizes up for grabs on the night. The Milk Off has become such a popular event that this year it will be held in The Caledonian Hall. Refreshments will be

available, and, for a bit of extra fun, you can try your luck on the mechanical bull that is being brought in for the evening. Make sure you join us to cheer on the competitors even if you don’t want to compete yourself. This competition is like nothing you’ve ever seen before and promises to be one you’ll never forget so don’t miss out – if you would like to get your hands on Agnes or Morag’s udders, please reserve your place by calling in to YourVet on phoning them 09 432 0500. Kick off is at 6pm on Saturday 27th July at the Caledonian Hall.
